I hope he will receive an Oscars nomination! We have had actors who won an Oscars for a comedic performance and it is not anywhere as good as Gosling’s.
Ken was never the villain, he just wanted to feel loved and thought the patriarchy was the way to get it; Sweet to know that he too was trying to figure himself out as much as Barbie was to herself.
THIS. This role played by anyone else could have easily come off as ‘incel’ and reallllyyy off-putting for that and then defeat the purpose of the movies’ whole message, but somehow Ryan pulls off both the earnestness and comedy with absolute aplomb. I’m glad people are saying he’s the scene stealer of this film, and he absolutely is but I don’t think enough people realize how hard it actually is to do what he did…that balance he struck is extremely difficult to do and it pays off big time.

You're right. I just took out the movie from my library and thought it was "interesting" and that Ken, at some point, was a jerk.. and then a day or two goes by and I start to think about the movie more and all the "layers" and subtleties I missed. I definitely need to watch it again, not only because the first time around I feel like I didn't really "get it" completely, but because I adore Ryan Gosling. He's the reason why I watched to begin with.🥰❤️

yeah, I'm also confused by giving animals gender politics. Maybe, like some other animals, they remain to lead the larger group, while males have to seek their own herd when they become adults and females drive them out? I'm thinking of lions here, but that the best I can think. Certainly horses are associated with hypermasculine cowboys, which is what Ken is dressed as when he encounters the, also hypermasculine police officers. But, from a literary standpoint, after the advent of cars hypermasculinity kind of attached itself to cars, so nostalgic monied women rode horses and a large volume of art and literiture connecting women and horses emerged. This leads us into the present day when there is Pegasus Barbie and My Little Pony and The Last Unicorn and, on the less fluffy side, things like Black Beauty. But Centaurs are usually male and horses in functional work uses like farming and law enforcement remain fairly male-identified. Where police and military are concerned, the patriarchy and facism in general do tend to use horses as violent "man extenders", as anyone who's ever seen how they can be used and abused to control protesters will be aware. The freshness and childlike take ( that is what I am sure was the direction given for the beach Ken role) was executed brilliantly. It’s simple. But Gosling mastered it. He really was the perfect Ken.

Especially with what Ryan did with this role. Arguably harder than drama, but it’s serious dramas that win awards. I still Haven’t forgotten Johnny Depp being nominated for playing Captain Jack and losing…

@@aynsleyyost5168 It really does stink, because this role played by any other Hollywood A lister dude would have come off VERRYY differently…and not in a good way. It would have fallen comedically flat or come off as “incel”. Ryan did his homework and that on top of his natural charming comic chops that doesn’t come off as weird or edgy paid off in a major way.

I haven't been this taken with a breakout character in a movie since Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates movie - and it was in both cases about the trailers - I knew both times I was in for something different. I'm Just Ken I have listened to multiple times throughout the summer. I find it so funny, epic and moving.
I loved Ken! He really added such a comedic element to the movie and also he was not just eye candy. He was talented. I love the song I am just Ken. OMG! His guitar 🎸 scene 🎬 cracked me up. Glad I got the Ken dolls for this awesome 😎 moment.

Another part that made me laugh was when Barbie was stepping into a non-water cold shower and Lizzo broke out of her song to say "Oh that's cold!"

Every time Ken brought up horses, I just thought back to my Barbie 'High Stepper' Horse. Like Horse Girl Barbie was very much a thing. (Also, I would frequently use my horse to hold down a button on the playstation controller so my PS wouldn't go to sleep/shut down...)
I've had the guitar played AT me so many times, when all I've wanted is to participate in performing along with the song. WHY DON'T THE KENS GET THIS?!?! I really felt seen at the end when Barbie says, "I want to do the imagining … I want to be part of the people that make meaning.”

The parts that made me laugh the hardest were definitely “SUBLIME!” and Ken putting sunglasses over his sunglasses. Of course I was high on edibles while watching it so that may have influenced why I laughed so hard…
you know when you watch a movie and you're rooting for the vilans so hard that you don't want to see the end of the movie because you know they will loose in the end ? I felt this watching this movie. I could rewatch the movie and stop it when Barbie says: "You can't change the power structure in one day" And then Ken says: Look at me, figuratively and literally.
