Danny Macaskill testing the limits of mountain biking, riding down the infamous Dubh Slabs on the Isle of Skye...

A Danny MacAskill film by Peny - www.wearepeny.com/
With many of our overseas filming plans cancelled as a result of recent times myself and the crew decided to look a little closer to home for our latest film.
I am a big fan of rock climbing and have been inspired by the various men and woman who set new routes and test themselves on some amazing faces around the world so I set out to find some challenging Slab Rock routes on my home Island of Skye with an aim to ride them in a continuous line and test what was possible on my bike. The remote Dubh Slabs rising out of Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Black Cuilin ridge provided some of the steepest terrain I have ever ridden as well as an amazing back drop for the film.
The remote location and steep face forced us to think outside the box and meant we had to move away from traditional filming techniques, with us opting to shoot the entire film using GoPros mounted on myself and an FPV (First Person View) racing drone.

I don't know about that, the slightly fisheye lens on gopro's tends to distort images, often making drops look steeper than they are in reality. In my experience, anyway.

Same here! They did a masterful job of showing three camera angles of that upcoming gap between slabs to build the suspense, and I had ZERO clue he was going to go straight up that part to the left. My brain wasn't expecting that, and I actually said, "WHOOAAA" out loud when he did that. It looked like if he fell right, it was a 100+ foot fall. SKETCH.

It’s got to be one hell of a feeling knowing that you’re the only person that probably has or ever will ride down that same rock for the rest of mankind’s time on this planet

@@stanfrymann8454 how so? I didn't see anywhere in the video where a fall would be fatal, or even particularly painful with protective gear on

Can we just take a moment and appreciate that he carried his bike all the way up there😂
Exactly what occurred to me at the start of the video! This guy is rock climbing with a bike on his back!?!?
@@stephanholland6181 yeah ik it’s insane
@@stephanholland6181 If I were to guess, they took him most of the way up by a helicopter. There must've been a heli with medics on board around in case something went wrong the whole magic is to not show any of that on the video, which is admirable, but I'm sure there was a helicopter flying above ready to help in a matter of seconds. given all that, great video and massive balls to actually ride that hill lots of risky points and the bike's grip and break shields' performance during the steep parts were actually incredible
It looks like an Ebike too,
I mean, sure, carrying a full-sus bike is tedious (it's not an e-bike BTW, that's just Santa Cruz' rear suspension design), and over these rocks it's pretty difficult. But it's not something most accomplished&fit climbers couldn't also handle. The carrying part is _nowhere near_ as remarkable as his riding down, which is just total madness. And: I doubt they actually used a helicopter much for getting up. Most of the work for this video was probably “research” to find the best way to ride down, and practicing the dangerous parts (i.e. _all_ parts) a bunch of times, with safety mats lying around and maybe security rope and whatnot. That would have taken a lot of time during which the helicopter wouldn't be needed, and helicopters are _expensive_ - even for a star like him.
Danny, I enjoy watching this phenomenal ride monthly!! Thanks for sharing! Blue skies...
That gave me leg cramps just sitting here watching! Brilliant film, Danny. MUCH RESPECT!!!

“What are you doing this weekend, Danny?” Danny - “Gonna go climb a mountain and do some bouldering with a bike on my back and just mosey back down afterwards.”

The first moment that something on a GoPro looks really deep. So we can be sure that this was really scrary😳 And one thing the camera ankles were amazing, really good job Danny!
Having climbed up this myself, I know how steep it is in places and can imagine some of the lines he took, but to be stood on the top, on a bike, about to go down would be a whole other world of scary! Well done Danny. Another example (if you needed one) of why the black cullins are such an inspiring place! It never leaves you.
What an increadible job of the drone and camera operators! Great teamwork!
J'adore ce type, pas de blabla, que du vélo en montagne, direct à l'essentiel, j'adore!!! I love this guy, no blah, only mountain biking, straight to the point, I love it !!!
that was scary. as someone else noted here: love those drone shots; at times they make it look deceptively easy and at others downright terrifying.
idk its just normal fpv footage, you could do that with 1 yrs experience easy
Imagine how hot those brakes are😂
What do you think he cooked his breakfast on?! ; )
.... new brake pads after ONE ride. :D
My thoughts the entire time.
I think because he rode so slow, they should not be too hot. Brakes get especially hot in medium pace when they have less time to cool down.
@@frodo5882 However, those brakes were in relatively CONSTANT use, so there's a good chance that heat was being added faster than it could be shed. The result? Hot brakes.
WOW ! I couldn’t breathe during this video! You are the braw Danny and a very well made film as usual. Bravo, je suis époustouflée !
EXCELLENT drone footage as well! Hats off to the pilot as well as rider.
Can we take a second to appreciate how good the drone pilot is?
Absolutely the first minute is one continuous shot- props!
I was thinking exactly the same, you guys thinking 5inch or cinewoop? The last shot is sick too, he goes backwards flawlessly. And as pointed out first minute is insanely precise. Back to the simulator and I’m plugging my balance board full of batteries!
I was actually thinking the drone pilot did too much...the constant circles were really off-putting. Distracted from the insanity and awesomeness of what he was doing imo.
It's an fpv drone no a dji drone. that type of flying is actually pretty easy to do. then your run it through Reelsteady stabilization in post and it looks awesome.
@@importon wouldn’t it’s easy to keep your subject in the frame when flying sideways in such a fluent way, hyper smooth is one thing but his line had to be super clean to get that result we see now

Disclaimer: in terms of steepness/scariness, the camera footage does this no justice.
Yea, I felt like it was a little bit too exhibitionist camera work with the swirling around Danny, instead of just giving us the real perspective of how insane this is.
@@Atlas531 i was a bit sick from the camera swirl, the last shot where the camera shows him descending a freaking wall was perfect, but the start was trash
Hate to say it but I agree. The POV drone works great for most MTB shots but it isn’t the right choice here. We need horizon leveling in these shots to communicate the steepness of the gradient.
because its done with a bloody drone skewing and spewing all over the place.....should have shot it simply....

@@imcontemptwithlife4155 well I get that but try to make such stable footage of a mountainbike descent with an FPV drone... I can tell you this is high level flying
@@imcontemptwithlife4155 Yea, couldn't get through it. First thing you learn about changing camera angles is you only do it when you need to or when there's a better shot with a different camera. This pilot was just way too excited about flying and not excited enough about the mountain biker.
