Honestly, this movie may not have aged as well as others, and a lot of people hate on it, but back when I was younger, I enjoyed this movie. I still do, in fact. It's not perfect, but it was still pretty good for the time (At least I think it was good for its time, though most people disagree).

I get that killing Johnny Cage both angered and saddened many people, but can we all take a moment to remember the fact that he charged at Shao Kahn to save Sonya Blade, knowing he would surely die. That takes a lot of courage to do that, and given his reputation before the Tournament, that was the most selfless act to do: Losing your life to save the lives of those you love.
I mean, yes, if done right, it could have been a really powerful and sentimental scene. But clearly, for some reason, the writers of this movie didn't want to make a great ending for Johnny Cage, they just wanted to get rid of him for some reason. Had he died in the final Mortal Kombar scene and then have Sonya take revenge would have been better but they would have to rewrite the entire movie to fit Johnny in it.
I'm going to dislike this because Shao Kahn didn't decapitate him in horrific fashion and leave left a bloody headless corpse.
Honestly didn’t even understand why Sonya had to climb onto that stage when an active fight between two literal super-humans was on.

We enjoyed this movie the way 2000's kids enjoyed the Star Wars prequels. The adults and teens of the time hated them but the kids loved them and didn't care about the cheesy aspects.
Loved this as a kid in the 90s and still do now. Was happy to finally see my favorite character Raiden actually fight. Both films hold a special place in my heart. Got to meet James Remar that played this Raiden at a convention back in 2019.

If you saw this movie in 1997 there's no way you did not know Cage was going to be killed early on. All the promotional material made it clear that Cage would not be in this film. Also if you were a fan of the Mortal Kombat games you could tell the movie would be based on Ultimate MK3 (where Cage is also dead) by watching all the promo material at the time. Any kid who watched this film at that time enjoyed.

That's actually a genius way to set up a new villain, by killing one of the main characters of the first movie. That way the audience will know how dangerous and powerful the new bad guy is
See Worf effect, this is common trope used often. Although negated by Raiden clearly having the ability to take out Kahn and his guards at any time but choosing to run instead.
Much fan service. Moves from the games. Character looks too. After having played UMK3 on Sega MegaDrive 2 a lot of times in my childhood, this movie was a blast.
If you grew up with this movie as a kid, you can't lie, you liked it at least a little bit lol. Back then we didn't know how cheesy it was but this movie still has a place in my heart despite all the criticism

I'm not a true fan of anything. Keeps me pure that way. This scene is decent but the entire movie has a shit ton of bad acting and shitty special effects. It's basically an R rated version of power rangers but still just as bad. Keep in mind though, I'm talking specifically about this movie and not the mortal kombat franchise as a whole.
Shao Khan at the end of the first film looked more dangerous, scary. This one looks like a guy having fun in a kids costume.
I still think it's cool..I honestly don't understand why people give it such shit...Yeah, Johnny died, yeah Jade wasn't dark skinned, but the fight scenes were watchable and I loved the soundtrack..

In the original cut of the first MK movie, Scorpion died from the Shadow Kick. They later revised the movie because there weren't enough fight scenes, and they edited the scene so that instead of the Shadow Kick landing, Scorpion teleports them.

James Remar as Raiden at least sounds like he's trying to give it his all, and compared to some of the others, he's not that bad. He's an underrated actor, but he just happens to show up in films that aren't the best-received.

Warriors was fantastic. He was also in a lot of old martial arts action films.
We can see some of the actors gave their best, even knowing the movie sucks. Specially Robin Shou and James Remar.
James is underrated because he got blacklisted for his drug problems (he later got clean) he was originally cast as hicks in aliens (he is actually in a few scenes that made the final cut) but got booted out of the uk because of drugs.
Naw. He was Great in Tales From the Darkside. But he SUCKED as Raiden. Christopher Lambert said NO to MK Annihilation for a REASON.
