Buy yourself about 50 to 100 lbs of Rebel Fescue and when you get a large patch spread just 12-12-12 fertilizer and the Rebel Fescue then lightly mulch it in. It will grow like hair on a dogs back but will not get tall and it has such a thin blade of grass it looks like bluegrass. I have slowly over seeded my lawn with Rebel Fescue and I have 1.3 acres of the most beautiful lawn and under my clumps of trees where it’s super shady.

Back in the good old days the head forester would send men into the woods in spring to drop the lower branches off the trees this ensured extra light got to the forest floor for fodder to grow live stock would follow the men and eat the young fresh leaves from the dropped branches then the local folk would collect up the dropped timber for fire wood known as Tillage., If an area was clear felled or thinned it would be fenced off and young trees allowed to grow anything unwanted would be cleared out for the first few years and by the time the fence had rotted and was no longer stock proof the new trees would be past harm from the livestock, and would be out competing other vegetation, the new timber patch would join the rest of the forest in its annual pruning. Of course the annual pruning grew straighter clearer timber for construction and ship building. A very lucrative crop for the local lord. And provided clear hunting for the King.
