I’ll take the 95 cause the insurance is cheaper
Is it though? It has virtually no anti theft, no safety equipment, and parts will be very expensive to replace. I'm not sure it would be as cheap as you think it would be unless you have shit insurance that wouldn't actually cover it at all.
@@mr.pritchard67insurance is absolutely cheaper

They wasted 50k on the car. They put the money in useless brand name parts. Someone that actually knows what they are doing can build a much nicer and faster EG for half the money.

@@TenthMan-ip2jpvery much agree.

Would love to see you guys finish up the car with exterior mods, fresh paint, bodywork, etc. Been great watching this build, inspiring!
This video is another great example of why older Hondas have so much charm and soul to them. It's the same reason I have an S2000 or bought an 8th gen Civic Si as a daily instead of a 10th/11th. No modern Honda engine will sound as good as an old K20. Modern Hondas are still very good cars, especially in terms of chassis dynamics, shifter feel, and interior design, but they lack that certain something that made the older ones special.
100 percent agree with you!! 8th Gen civic was the last true si!! Had mine for 12 years! Never selling!
@@roba6812 8th gens look like a 2005 Prius
I'm of the opinion that honda lost their spirit when Soichrio Honda died in the late 90's. They're still trying their best but they don't take risks or experiment like they used to. I hope they get it back soon, I'd love a new rwd honda like an s3000 or something
I think it's just a nostalgic feeling you got
It doesn’t have to be 50,000 but restoring an old car like this is why we watch. This is doing what we all wish we could do. Thank you!

Dope idea
Very cool idea although it would be a lot more difficult for them. The BBC/Amazon had a lot more money and definitely provided entire teams to build each car.
Donut is the new top gear anyway so may as well. Would love to see some of the things learned from hi low applied when you have an overall budget. Where is the bang for buck? Great idea.
Instead of one single timed lap do a tour, racing or testing through streets, canyons, track, maybe even somewhere else as well
I really like these episodes because it's always more than numbers and brochure highlights. Driver experience and connection to the car has always been more important in my book. That Civic Type R is wonderful but I would take the build of an EG with the guys over a dealership hand shake.

Built a CRX like that with some of my friends about 20 years ago when they and B16s were still dirt cheap, one of my favorite car memories ever, that thing was just so raw sounding/feeling with it's lift oversteer, about one step up from being on a bike! These fat new cars with their spaceship handling and fake engine noise will never replicate that! Selling it is one of my biggest regrets, but I needed money for an SR swap at the time 😅

The older Civic definitely holds its charm, and those modifications really make it unique. The sheer fun and adrenaline experienced in the DIY project seemed unbeatable.
1993 Civic and 1995 Civic 3Door Hatchback also are still amazing.
Especially the adrenaline when some of your upgrades blow up...
@@PavelKostromitinov That rush of wondering how you'll get home! I've been there...
It's definitely hard to decide ... 1. The 2023 Civic has warranty for 50k that also includes parts and motor ... already makes 315hp out of the factory. 2. The enjoyment of building your own Civic is good but the expense include like when the engine fails, electrical works, tuning the car and stuff CAN BE FUN but it's a personal taste. 3. The old Civic can be made for less if you buy used parts mostly for the interior and would make a decent change to get a turbo for it. Maybe some parts can be bought used or bought from a different brand to change the price a little bit just to squeeze a turbo to even the field from 230hp to at least 280 or even 300 ? all and all it's a good little toy to play with
Not even used parts ditch the intake they put on and go turbo (pretty much the same price) Ditch those seats and go with momo ikon nrg jegs sparco. Then don’t wrap the headliner spray it or get suede and do it yourself. Clean and spray the carpet. Then you can still add a touchscreen and backup camera and get a pillar for the gauges and spend about half what they did on the seats alone.
I've never been a Honda guy, and I'm still not, but I 100% respect the work that went into that build. Looks like it was a ton of fun (along with the usual pain of working on cars) and the results made everyone happy. Can't beat that. We need to see the Money Pit Miata against the EG!
Really wanna see a turbo and a wrap on the 95 to finish it off. See if you can get the lap time down with some boost.
naaah the shitbox look is part of the charm. Wouldn't be the same with a wrap.
Better to give it a body kit first if you going to wrap it, including a legit custom hood to replace that horrible cut out.
and e85. make 600 ponies reliable. also f wrap, get it painted
honestly for the $50k they spent I thought they should've slapped a turbo on it first considering the type r is turbo
The ITB's make a turbo kit significantly harder to engineer here. They would have to ditch the ITB's for an off the shelf setup, which they probably won't do given how committed they are at this point to having them on the car. There may be a video on a turbo setup still, but it's not simple and would have to be entirely custom.
I definitely want to see more with this car, don’t let it die
My guy, the car is badly build and those guys are casuals, if you get professionals from Europe to do that job and invest 50 000$ into any car from 1990s it will absolutely destroy that brand new little Civic and many more. Drag or Race, heck in Europe it will cost 10 000 euros to beat that civic.
@@onechakarovreal
@@onechakarov But that isn't the point. Sink any significant amount of money into any car and you could more than likely take on most production vehicles out there. The point here is that with enough dedication and bravery to modify a car, you can take a car from 30 years ago and make it perform almost as well as a car made today. Let's not forget that while they built this in a matter of months, they have funding, a workshop & salaries (I assume). It would take most of us years to get FL5 level performance out of a pos EG. The difference is every modification they've made to that EG can be done by your average Joe with a friend and a dream. No high tech experimental bs, just a wrench and a plan.
This series has been a blast. Since I got my first civic I have had a special spot in my heart for them

I think when it comes to new cars and especially hot hatchbacks, it's advances in the diffs and electronics that really give them an edge against older cars. But that 95 hatch is still an awesome build that looks insanely fun to drive. It deserves a decent wrap or paint job next.
exactly, and who knows, maybe with an updated diff the EG would be able to easily put down the power and thus make it better maneuverable - but that would probably improve the time and the handling too much and uhhhh... that probably does not look good as in old model vs new model, some sale just miiiiight get influenced by such thing
I love what u guys have done with the civic. And would love to see more. But also do the same with a different car. Lots of fun thank you
Adding a hood scoop of some kind would be nice and it could improve the performance having essentially a ram air intake. And I feel like with a bit more tinkering there is still some potential left in it aside from the obvious cop out of putting a turbo on it...
The rawness of the EG build to me just has so much more personality and fun appeal. The new Type-R is amazing, but it does not mimic that OG feel in the Temple of VTEC.
I love it, but the thing with mods it's that you are always chasing bugs, and if you are going to have only one car, it becomes tedious

Definitely going with the BUILD! Don't get me wrong, the new Type R would be cool to have and modify, but to build up and modify a car with your own hands is an experience and pride you can't buy, plus I use to own a 94 EG and it was a fun car.
You can..and it costs 45k plus labor.
There's still plenty of weight to be cut out of the '95. Money was spent where it didn't need to be spent, even though it's cool. This could have been a $40k project, and with some more reduction, I think the times would match up. Altogether a fun series of videos for sure!
But they wanted a balanced car not just a full stripped track monater
No thanks, everything was necessary.
A small turbo would have gone a long way. I'd rather have the back seats and a small turbo.
yeah the itbs should have been a turbo instead
My favorite episode so far. Please keep going with the build and maybe a rematch with the Type R once it is done? 🙏

I think it's pretty impressive that for a similar amount, you can build an older car out and come that close to lap times, even though the new car is turbocharged and has all the tech (traction control, etc.) that *should* give it more of an edge than it does
Agreed, as someone who had driven his fair share of cars, between a fast insulated spaceship vs a visceral H shift fun car that is only a second or so slower (I know that's an eternity in a real road race) I'll take the slower analog fun car every time for my trackday toy. You are a part of the car and just know everything it's doing, that analog symbiotic experience of actually shifting gears and hearing the ICE scream with a cable throttle is something that can never be replicated properly with electrons and actuators.
Very true! Plus, I don't think you'd need to spend a similar amount and come close to lap times... I think it could have been done for a little bit cheaper.
except, they could've also gone with a completely different, cheaper build that would've smoked the type r. this is for the views though, and it's entertaining so I'm not mad. ik if the choices of parts were up to the guys still it'd probably be a different outcome, but ik the higher ups wanted this🥲

True. This episode alone is 10/10.
This Episode like 1/10 honestly. Just showing what Honda marketing dollars do with a big channel like Donut media.
I say do more "old" vs "new" vids man. This stuff is awesome!
Love Donut, You can't beat that experience.
With the older one, you can also have reasonable fun while not going that far into the build. And even if you do, theres more room to get it where you want, not only in esthetics but also performance, maybe with some more wheel time and suspension/tire setuping the gap might get closer and youll end up with a car that fits you like a glove. But if you ask me, this whole process IS the fun, and doing it with such an expansive car that have (and activally does) a lot of choices (Like the active suspension thing) to me its very counter productive in my eyes.
The eg6 hatch got me into cars. I remember Speed Factory Racing running a 10sec quarter mile with a turbo single cam hatch back in the day. Blew my mind. I loved this series. Mad nostalgia.
Especially when they had the OG Honda swap nerd Brian Gillespie help with their K swap, that man is a god to us old JDM heads just like Dori Dori and Dave Coleman.
Speedfactory sure got a lot more out of their hatch than 10 seconds until they wrecked it Haven’t heard much about them since.
Honestly if the eg was turboed it would be a fair comparison but the fact it is still that close being NA just a small turbo would smoke the type r but a fbo type r would kill the eg since its pretty much maxed before getting into fully built territory in the engine
The 1995 is a funique experience even stock. For it's time, weight and size it's very nippy and quite quick, it's size make it feel go-kart-ish, it's decently easy to work on and it can go quite low in weight. There's few cars that come close in creating the same experience for a budgeted price.
Loved this series and I hope to see more like it!
Lets just take a moment to aknowledge how the brand new Type R is an absolutely astounding hot hatch, true to form straight out of the box when so many other manufacturers are focusing more on gadgets than actual driving experience. Well done Honda, bless you!
Reckon that the paint needs some love, keep the colour as it feels perfect for the car but some paint repair, decals, headlight love, and perhaps a body kit (rocket bunny style). I can't stress enough how much I want to see the colour maintened though. The turquoise and yellow work so well together

My favorite build by Donut! They need to pick their track days better. Why even try in the rain. Donut has the money to reschedule. The old civic has a hundred less horsepower and was only two seconds off the pace. Very impressive. More please!

Tuned NA K swap runs 0-60 in under 4s. With ac and power steering no weight reduction. I think Donut got played in this build for that price. Cost just over 10 large to get under 4s.
The eg could have been faster if you'd have put a big spoiler on the rear for extra traction .
Need to do a drag race and a 40 roll race between them!! Would be fun to see what ones got a better 1/4 time

pretty amazing what the type r can do off the lot - cup 2 tires though make a huge difference and would love to know what the EG had wrapped on it's wheels. But hot damn, just came from watching the Subaru wrx video where high car was also slower than the type r and the type r blew the 2023 wrx out of the water! wrap all your wheels in cup 2's for the next video!
As James May said during Top Gear. "Everything today is better than it was one day ago.." For the same money you are getting a much more reliable car with a manufacturer's warranty that doesn't sound like it's going to explode every time you step on the accelerator. It's an easy choice, Type R.
that's like a warm family moment right there. even James' father would be proud.
Jerimah telling the new civic to relax is incredibly relatable. I hate having my car scream at me for stuff I’m doing 😭
I love the jdm K20A and it revs to 9000 in a light weight body. Now that’s fun
its more fun to drive a slow car than a fast car slow. Hearing the car grunt as the RPM goes high, the shakiness and the feeling everything is about the collapse. The adrenaline that anything can blow up anytime soon. that's the feeling we crave for
I feel like you guys need to make a hi/low season with muscle cars, maybe drag racers, or a muscle car money pit. Hopefully with superchargers since I believe the only video about a supercharger was the one from wish.
I Feel like a pair of blazers or s10s would be perfect
Absolutely do more! It's calling for a beautiful body kit and and sweet paint job/wrap.
Guys, weld the seams. You still have some work that can be done. Stiffening the chassis will complement the suspension upgrades you've already done. I'm not sure there is enough to make up the missing time, but would be worth checking out.
You guys just built my dream EG, imagine it all black with yellow straps and/or external details... (and a proper hood cover lol)
Love the civic guys keep up the good work😊
Next the body pls
