I was so nervous buying the fold 5. It's a lot of money. But I've had it for 4 weeks now and I don't think I can go back to a non-foldable phone. The only negative so far is my screen time has gone up to an embarrassing amount.😂

I've had the Z Fold 5 for about a week now. I'm blown away. It's hard to imagine going back to a normal slab style phone. Software optimization is just amazing. Such a smooth UI experience. Running Ofice 365 and editing spreadsheets on the go with the large display is just a game changer. Very pleasantly surprised with battery life as well. Well done, Samsung!

@TRC_941 This was a concern when buying the Fold, but Samsung Care Plus is like $7.00 a month. Literally covers anything that could possibly happen to the phone. Not worried about it.
Have to say, this is the best video you have done in a long time, I miss you giving more opinions on your videos. I know the theme of the channel is unboxing, but I feel you used to give a lot more opinions where you would commit to a thought, rather than gloss over. Please more of this!
This channel used to be one of my favorites but then came covid and they pivoted to the podcast format which is basically 9:30 of filler and 0:30 seconds of value

I would go with the Z Fold 5. I actually like the narrow phone when folded as it feels so good one handed. And I also like the Z Fold screen when unfolded compared to the Pixel due to its large bezel which is an eye sore for me. If the Z Fold 5 was released the same time with the S23 Ultra, I would have picked the Fold 5 (close fight though).

Samsung trade in was extremely good, I traded in my 3 month old Samsung 23 ultra for almost the same price that I bought it for when I pre-ordered the zfold 5
I totally agree with you. Many people criticized the narrow front screen but they don't realize that it's a real advantage when it comes to not having to reach far while typing or using the front screen which is a huge Plus for my tired hands. The trade-in deals are amazing I got the z fold five for $577 after trading in my z Fold 4 for $1000 and a promotional Black Friday deal of over $300 off however they made me pay over $160 in tax

How exactly does the Pixel offer more "thoughtful" software?? Just because of the orientation? I swear reviewers are so biased to Google when it comes to software it's ridiculous. Samsung easily has the best software for foldables, more flexibility, more multi-tasking options, intuitive task bar, forces apps to multi window and also forces apps to fit the bigger screen aspect ratio, and the normal OneUI features that are actually useful. Just an all around better software experience and it's not even close. The only thing holding Samsung back is their persistence on not using a wider cover screen. As soon as they do that the Galaxy Fold will be the clear winner no doubt.
They like little letterboxed apps on a big tablet screen. It's bizarre.
Each to their own, but I 100% agree that the Pixel software is far superior in the context of Pixel features. These include dictation and recorder that are far better than the Play Store versions on the Galaxy. These, which I use for many hours daily, make the Pixel 10X better. But if you do not use these and are an S-pen person, then the Galaxy may be your choice. So the truth is that both offer their own takes, and depending on your needs, we will choose our poison. For the record, many new fold features will come to the Pixel in the next feature update, including changes to the dock in line with the Galaxy. The Pixel can only improve and will likely catch the Galaxy in fold-specific software. But you cannot improve the hardware, and for me, the de facto USP of the Pixel is that productive, usable front display! As for apps that don't fill the display, switch the Pixel to portrait mode; that is what tablets do, and don't complain about having to do that, as I know with my Fold 4, I turned that to landscape mode for all my videos, including YT! Pixel for the win!
Dnt you think you are a lil biased to Samsung? 5 years and Sammie haven't given a wider screen. If you dnt have the pixel fold, how do you know? You: soon as Samsung do that, they will be the clear winner.

That aspect ratio is the reason apps look HORRIBLE on the Pixel's inner screen, and the device is harder to hold and operate one-handed. Speaking of biases: willfully ignoring the Z Fold's increase in cover display from Gen 1 to Gen 2, and then again with Gen 4, screams bias. 😉 You do know Samsung did that, right?
It's hard to explain. Switch to pixel for a year then try switching back to Samsung. Without all the extra software that pixel has, the Samsung just ended up being a smart phone with high specs, bit missing something

This is easy... samsung thin front screen is better. When you put on a case. Fits great in one hand since my s pen is hidden in the hinge protection. Genius design.
The problem with apps not adjusted to the inner screen of the pixel is that Google is somehow forcing creators to adjust their apps for this format. Not all the work is going to be done by Google. It's just that google doesn't do an extension of the apps because it is a horrible way to see the apps. Like Instagram on Ipad.

So, I have the Z fold 4, I upgraded from the flip 3. And I almost never use the fold feature. That being said, when I do use it, it makes me smile. Every single time I fold this thing open, and have a tablet in my hand, it factually changes the experience. I will never, ever, go back to slab phones. It's not just the screen real-estate, it's the option to choose how I tackle my media. As for battery life, it lasts a day. Like a legit full day of use while at work.
I'd choose Samsung this year and probably Google's next year as I'm not a fan of first/beta editions.

I have had my Z Fold 5 since August 11th. And I have been pleasantly surprised at how often I use it in its open state. I have been reading so many books, fan fictions, and manga. It's one of the best form factors for getting stuff done as I've even opened a lot more documents for work as well. With that said, I would love to use the pixel fold as well, because the pixel communication software features such as the amazing voice to text, hold for me, comma and call screening make using the foldable like a phone of more enjoyable experience. Whereas I have felt annoyances of using my z fold five like a phone.
For me. I have the z fold 5 and I have small hands. I haven't found it irritating to type on the main screen when my nails are short. But I have been using swipe to text more then I ever have. I often forget about that feature. But I think my brain automatically decided this is the way lol. Hope this helps someone else. Love the video
I suspect having more applications optimized for the inside screen of the Z Fold, has something to do with why you find it more appealing to open.

Not really. Samsung is getting their shit rocked in other markets not the U.S. the folding market has better phones in the China markets. Samsung only seems good in the states cause it is all we know. Same goes for Apple users. No competition

The big thing that made me choose the Z Fold 5 over the Pixel Fold was the processor. I had tried out the Pixel 7 for a while and the G2 just can't keep up. It would get really hot, and the battery would drain too fast with what I would consider moderate usage. I couldn't even imagine trying to run multiple apps side by side with the same processor. The processor in the Fold 5 exceeds my expectations. The phone stays cool and handles everything I throw at it... even in the Light performance profile.
Yes battery life and staying cool amazes me. My s22 ultra would get hot. This is my first foldong phone and I'm so impressed. I'll never go back.
Pixel seemed to have clearly better photos most of the time, but the lack of apps properly utilizing the bigger screen (more so on the Pixel) means that neither of these are actually ready. So I got the Flip 5! Heheh 😁. I also want the outer screen to be on the same side as the outer cameras, this makes it easier for selfies

Have a z fold 5 after coming from a s21 ultra and have an iphone SE i use for work. The outter screen is similar in size to the SE and have been using it more.. but nothing beats using the main screen for all other functions
The Z Fold opens apps better on the inner display because the inner display is a portrait aspect ratio like most phone apps. If you rotate the Pixel Fold inner display to portrait since it opens in landscape then the apps look just as good as they do on the Z Fold. That is why Samsung went with the very narrow outer display That being said I love the Pixel Fold so much more. The outer screen is so important
this is I believe Samsung design is logically correct. because most of the apps runs on portrait mode w/o customization needed..
The biggest struggle between the two phones is that my ideal foldable phone is somewhere between the two. Like I either want a galaxy z fold "ultra" that makes it wider like a standard phone aspect ratio, or I want a Google fold "note" that has all the stylus support of a Samsung device. I'm hoping next year we can see one or both ideas happen.

I prefer the Pixel experience and unique Pixel features but knowing that I too will use the outside display a lot more than the inside one means justifying the $1800 asking price makes no sense for me. I do like that the front display is wider and shorter than my Pixel 7 Pro and if Google sold a Pixel with just that front display for $500 then I'd gladly pick it up over a Pixel 7 or 7A, till that happens, Pixel 8 Pro it is for me.
I can't wait for international release of Honor Magic V2. What I've seen so far its gonna be the best foldable on the market.
Also very much interested, like that it's thiner, lighter and with a bigger battery. Hopefully the software works

Rolling phones would fix the inside screen vs outside screen issue, imo, and maybe even aspect ratio issues as well, since you could just roll or unroll as much of the screen as you need at any given time.
For me there's only one deciding factor, the front screen. Due to that I would never even consider the Samsung. The front narrow tall screen is the worst, Pixel Fold all the way. It'll only get better with software updates over time.
I had the Pixel Fold for a couple of weeks, and I returned it. The Z Fold 5 has better optimization of the inner display, better speakers, and the crease is less pronounced.
The point of the folding smartphone was to open it up and use it open. This is how Samsung envisioned you would use it and also the point of the device. The outer display is meant for short bursts of use but still has all the same functionality of any Samsung phone. It was also designed to be the 1-handed screen while opening it was meant for 2 handed extended use. I don't want to bash the Pixel but watching Lew at the end open it and it already being in landscape mode and looking extra wide and cumbersome is quite off putting. I rarely use my fold in landscape (only for media consumption) the Z Fold opens like a book and feels kind of like it too because of opening into portait mode.

Spen, Dex, Software optimization and sturdy hinge of Samsung takes the cake for me.
I don't have either phones but I could imagine being forced to use the wide screen more on fold 5 so that could lead to encouraging myself to do multitasking alot. Otherhand on pixel fold I would not be encouraged to do multitasking that much, which will give good battery/day

The camera (primary) tested here looks like the Auto HDR was turned ON for the Samsung hence it looked little washed out albeit exposing shadows and highlights more and less contrast. Just turn the HDR off and it would look natural.

I'm most likely going to upgrade my zfold 2 to the 5 this year or next year. I absolutely love the Zfold and everything that comes with it. I'm not the biggest camera junky so the quality is plenty for me. The amount of multitasking I can do for my business is definitely needed. The Pixel fold doesn't have the software and final finish I'm looking for. I can definitely see myself going that direction once they flesh out the smaller details for the phone.
I upgraded my Z Fold 2 to Z Fold 5. Honestly, it's not much of an upgrade. I can definitely feel that the Fold 5 is faster the moment I used it, it feels more premium. But still not much of a difference. Another thing to consider is if you can use the cost as a tax write-off. Or perhaps you feel like your Fold 2 is dying and you want to trade it in before it gives in. It all boils down to how much is the $1800 worth for the buyer? If it's like a spare change then that person wouldn't hesitate in the first place but if it's a good amount for you, then you might want to hold on till the next Fold.

@@xav923 I've had the fold 2 for almost 3 years. I'm a casual user. Brought it to beaches and had it's fair share of sand but so far it gave me no problems.
I'm not convinced with foldable smartphones still. But if it's between these 2, overall I'd go with the Z Fold 5. I think it was definitely intentionally designed for the Z Fold 5 to be used opened most of the time and to do quick notification checks on its outer screen.
I'm waiting for the 8th generation. Is still too early.
@@h3cz_it's not to early. Z fold 5 is amazing and folds flat which is what I was waiting for. My first foldable I'll never go back. The front screen is amazing for one handed use as well and is not too small. Battery life is amazing, phone stays cold.
I was just thinking of switching to a foldable device in Japan.(btw that Kitano Sushi restaurant looked interesting!😋) since we don't use EN keyboards (instead a JP exclusive one ) which is good for even slim phones, I prefer Samsung for now.

I have the both and will decide which one stays but looks like so far the pure android experience with pixel fold & normal phone kind thing's on the outer screen is amazing. I only wish z fold 5 had slightly larger display on folded side. So far both devices are amazing and it is the personal choice. Z fold is more matured but pixel is just more fun to use in my cases. But looks like u can't go wrong with both. Just keep in mind in a daily basis somehow u use it folded more than unfolded.

@@krysgg7600 The vanity of it is cool but there are a lot of drawbacks you need to be aware of prior to buying one. I just got rid of my fold 3 after owning it for 2 years and I couldnt be happier. Folding phones are super bulky, you will have a brick in your pocket if you have one. Case options are super limited and not necesarily very protective, you lose a lot of customization, and if the phone gets damaged, even if its the glass screen not the inside screen, it costs about $600 to get fixed. The size and shaping is so unproportionate to normal phone software, no matter what you will be dealing with empty or black bars on the top or sides of your phone when using apps, so dont go into it thinking youll see more than a normal phone with the screen unfolded. I cant speak for the fold 5, but the fold 3 was pretty glitchy and samsung as essentially confirmed they dont actually prioritze their fold lineup, ie. why the folds dont get the good cameras and processor chips. Lastly, fold phones destroy their battery. They dont start very good or last very long to begin with, but with how tiny the batteries in the phone are and how much power the phone drains between the 2 screens, it is a bad daily driver. If you were someone who had a good reason for 2 phones, not that Id know what that would be, a fold could be a fun secondary phone, but for your daily driver it will bring you more problems than benefits
Good stuff guys! Been missing the crew, Ryan, Hilly, Lew, Moe.... Also, the problem with the Pixel not displaying the right size can be addressed in the developer options. There is a section that will force all apps to open and be full screen on the inner display. It's not a complete solution, I'm assuming Google will fix it and keep improving on it in a software update.

I'm not sure they'll fix it, because they don't feel it's broken. They're trying to shame developers into scaling their apps properly, but that's likely not going to work.

Samsung completely crushes the Pixel Fold with the Z Fold5. They may not be innovating a lot compared to their predecessors but they are still top of the line.

I'm really impressed with the Quality of your mike pick up throughout the entire video. Excellent audio reproduction excellent noise cancellation while you were driving of all things. You need to promote that mike set up to other creators as I think they're using low quality cheap on phone mike set up from apple. This mike that you are using Blows Apple and squashes it in to the dirt. Much appreciated this video I was able to enjoy the clarity of all you said...

I've owned both and I love them both but I prefer the pixel fold yeah all apps needs fixing by the developers unless google implements a stretch feature like samsung did but the Ui is smoother , the pics are better , I love the AI features for calls , the fastest text to speech , a usable cover display ,the split quick toggles/ notifications when it's unfolded . but for the z fold I love the hdmi out , samsung dex , the app continuity from closed to open , the app strecthing , ability to have the cover and inner with seperate lay outs . But I know google is putting the presssure on app developers because 60% of my apps are already full screen now and all of my TV's have google built in so I don't have to worry about hdmi out just wish I had a dex mode.
Evrything you mentioned that is lacking on both... Oppo Find N2 doesn't have it. They took Evrything that makes each a powerhouse and combined into one device. Its like the best of both worlds!
What's the AI call feature do?
I have used full time Z fold every year since release and just moved to the Pixel Fold, I am actually shocked at anyone choosing the Z-fold and usually chalk it up as you are not a full time fold user. To me its a better software experience on the pixel fold and its night and day . In your review here you picked 2 non optimized apps that Samsung is stretching to make it seem like they fixed it but its not, and across the 2 devices and a much larger selections of apps you will find that Pixel Fold has a way to render it much more naturally and better. With the Pixel fold the device is essentially 3 normarmal'ish phone screens side by side by side (think desktop with 2 monitors or microsoft duo) 2 on the inside and one on the outside, the inside ones also come together and let you go portrait. Between these options I can always find one that works perfectly for the app although it might not be opened and landscape. On the Pixel the worst case is it works perfect on the outer screen, with most times then will also work open and rotated vertical. Samsung on the other hand straight up has made so many apps unusable for me through several generation completely breaking some as well, additionally the outside screen breaks many apps and is just not very usable . Now factor in Pixel features vs Samsung bloat, day one updates yada yada honestly its a no brainer to me. Perhaps you should have done a week, and really used the phones before deciding :-) As far as the not opening it as much, I see that as proof the fold is working, its a phone when i need a phone, and when I need something more it becomes a tablet. If I wanted a tablet all the time I would just go back to the Nexus 7 and shove that in my pocket, saying you don't use the big screen as much or open it as much on a foldable as a negative is just downright silly!

I have the Samsung fold 3 trying to upgrade to the fold 5 because I just love the UI of Samsung than any other phone 😅 and plus more apps are better optimized on the Samsung fold devices than any other fold right now... just wish they added the same cameras of the s23 ultra on the folds cuz thats all that is missing for me.

I think Samsung’s narrow design when it’s shut is better for using apps. Yes, keyboard is smushed, but wider screens tend to show content as if it’s zoomed in which imo is a big inconvenience and it just does not look right or good. I think with the narrow design you can see more at the same time, for example when scrolling through social media.

this was the video that helped me purchase my zfold5, for the second time. i bought one and returned it initially because i wasn't sure if i like the form factor and having to keep unfolding the phone. but after watching this video i realized there's way more to it, and i decided to give it another go. I'm now 2+ month in and i believe my next phone will also be a foldable. thanks unboxtherapy.

It is the Pixel Fold for me. I just love everything about it. The only thing missing is pen support. This is my first foldable phone. I did use the Duo for about a month. I did return it because it had no carrier support. Now I am glad that I did. I cannot use any foldable phone without a usable outside screen.

2 other reviewers that I have seen used spen on the Google pixel fold. Front and inner screen. One of them used a $12 🖋️ and the other used some other 🖊️

I'm using the Samsung Fold 5 and I've using it for two weeks. While it is nice to have a larger screen for watching shows, I'm still struggling to adapt bc I sometimes don't want to open the phone and the front screen is so small and thin, I can't type.
The pixel fold was already running this race with one leg, last years mid range tensor 2 chip vs the snap 8 gen 2 lol. Just that alone already loses the battle for google (and im a fan, have a 7 pro). The pixel fold has the better outer screen format and a better zoom...thats it thats it thats all its got going for it over the fold 5.

@wakanda4eva hell no, fold 5 only. Passed on the pixel fold due to the outdated and less than stellar chip in it among other things.
As someone that has used both Z Fold and Pixel Fold, I've found that I like the Pixel Fold more than the Z Fold experience. I get that Galaxy has had more time to perfect their software but I like the Pixel software more. I noticed that Lew uses the back of the Pixel Fold case. I use both halves and love the case and design!
Only practice of use will show how well the new samsung Z Fold 5 is done. But for now, repair service centers are overflowing with the previous version of Samsung Z Fold 4.

Hardly open my fold discovered the one handed texting on the fold has been relaxing. I can use 2 hands with no problems.
