World Population by Country | 1600-2023

2023 ж. 3 Мау.
2 093 718 Рет қаралды

This video follows the top 15 countries or political units by population at any given year. It begins in the year 1600 and continues to the present, where more than 14 times the people now inhabit the planet.
Humanity has embarked on an unprecedented period of population growth over the past 400 years. Over the course of this demographic transition great changes have swept the planet with no government from 1600 remaining uninterrupted until the present.
A wide variety of sources made this work possible. Angus Maddison's population tables, tacitus.nu, Geacron, the CIA Factbook, the World Bank, and several historical atlases all provided information over the last several months. Given the massive colonial empires prominent throughout much of the timeframe, all colonial populations are included as a part of the mother country.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of sources, many smaller realms and kingdoms have been excluded in earlier periods, especially Native American tribes, several Sub-Saharan African kingdoms, and the Aboriginal people of Oceania. This may mean early totals are a bit low. Following about 1800, the vast majority of the world is included in totals. The erratic changes on the bars are caused by border changes and the rise/fall of the various powers. Rather than tracking population in a static area, this visualization seeks to emphasize the changing nature of demographic power throughout history.

    • Yes, it was awesome but there is also something very wonky about this chart. After all, how could Japan go from a population of about a 100 million in 1935 to more than 450 million by 1943? This is particularly odd when you consider that most of the able-bodied men were off fighting a war for much of this time. And furthermore, how could the population then just suddenly drop back down to 70 million in just the two years following WW2? First of all, Japan only lost about 3-million people during the war and not 300-million. And secondly you would expect the population to drop during the war rather than right after it. It just makes no sense. Did Godzilla just get hungry and swallow up 300 million people or something? Or perhaps they are counting the populations of the countries Japan was occupying during this time period but that really does not make any sense. It would only make sense if these remained part of Japan after the war and were not merely occupied by them during the war.

It's not often Mentioned, but that is the ONLY reason England won any battles against France. All of England's battles won when they occupied Frannce for several decades, during the 100 years War, were entirely due to the archers and footsoldiers with the English longbow, and the Norman knights and cavalry, wouldn't even have tried to invade France without this, as the army was like 25% of the size, just like the population.95% of the archers were Celt or Anglo-Saxon, irony at its Finest 🙂 Then there is the ships that protected Protestant England from the vastly more numerous Spanish Armada in the 1500''s - faster, more manoeuvrable, with quicker Loading Cannon and again the only reason But the Spanish didn't successfully invade was due to their ships not being manoeuvrable enough in the difficult weather conditions and being picked off *AIt's no coincidence that the Industrial Revolution started there

    • @@blackpaint9093 "because"? Because what? Your comment isn't referring to anything we are talking about. The OP was enquiring about how the English managed to Survive in wars without running out of manpower. This was entirely a combination of being protected by the English Channel along with having different technological advantages- What's anything got to do with the genetical cultural Make up of Kings and nobles, who were a fraction of the total population? As for your assertion that the Kings of England were "French" that's just tired propaganda, which is proven to be untrue under critical reasoning. Pre 1066, the kings of England were Anglo-Saxon, and after 1066,, Kings of England were at 1st a mixture of Scandinavian and old French/Frankish, but were culturally predominantly Scandinavian, e.g. they used longboats and Viking battle tactics. Then at the time of the 100 years War they were very different from those at Williams time, through centuries of integration with the Anglo-Saxons and Celts.Henry IV was the 1st king to speak English and ensure all written correspondence inside the king's chamber and outside was in English, as so with the House of Commons, in legal discussion

  • This is fantastic! While I doubt the program you use can actually do this, here’s a few hypothetical ideas I had to make this easier to follow: - Name/flag changes on the fly. Instead of “Spanish Empire (Habsburg)” decreasing to zero while “Spanish Empire (Bourbon)” races up to replace it, it could just stay where it is and only change its label. - Visually combining countries. Instead of “Kingdom of England” decreasing to zero while “Great Britain” increases from zero, imagine this: “Kingdom of Scotland” comes up from the bottom to the right, neatly slots on to the side of England, the label/flag changes to GB, and then it moves up to its new place on the list. - Visually splitting countries. Imagine this: for the dissolution of the Soviet Union, all the republics split off from the right and descend in single file down the side, the remaining part changes label to Russia, and then moves down to its new place on the list. - Visually representing changes in military occupation. For example, chunks of population would fly between “Republic of China” and “Empire of Japan” yearly as the tides of the war change. You could show migration in a similar way (if you had the data), but I would recommend against it, because it would add ambiguity when the point is to reduce it.
