clueless is one of those films that has been able to stand the test of time and is just as popular as ever. based on the jane austen novel emma, the story follows popular californian high schooler cher horowitz and her incredibly privileged life. in today's video we'll be examining all of the costumes in clueless (designed by the amazing mona may) and seeing how they relate to the story and its characters.

Tai is not shamed for having had sex and neither is Cher (besides by Tai in their fight but it's more to point to her inexperience in matters that Tai knows more about than the actual virginity itself). • I would argue that Cher is a somewhat likable character from the start, because while she's self absorbed and yes, clueless, she's also genuine. She's popular because she's always been popular, but she's no Regina George. Cher simply wouldn't see the point in telling someone she loved their skirt and trash talk it behind their back. Her primary motivation for setting up her teachers wasn't selfless, but in the end she cares the most that she's made them happy. She believes her popularity to be a universal good and she's not entirely wrong. She's a thoughtful leader, maybe because she's so used to mothering her own father. You can see her organizing hang outs throughout the film and when she loses interest in that, their friend group quickly splinters. As for Amber, I don't think her and Cher were ever that close. I think they hang out because they're from the same neighborhood and economic background, maybe they're family friends. To Amber, it must look like Cher gets everything you could want- attention from the most popular boy, the queen of the school status, the grades- without even trying. Cher on the other hand doesn't seem to take Amber seriously at all, she just smiles and rolls her eyes at Amber's jabs. It suggests that she's used to that behavior which is why I don't think their frienemy dynamic is a new thing.

    • I agree. She's likable, always trying to make sure that her father gets his vitamins. She's very positive in the sense that she is privileged. And instead of saying nice things about people, like an "I love your skirt" when she doesn't, she tries to find the best way to say truths she considers hard ("Tai, you look terrible") in a sweet way. Her problem is not that she has bad intentions, it's that she's fifteen, nearly sixteen, and thinks she knows more than she actually does. That's a forgivable flaw in a teenager, as long as she gets rid of it.

It shows that they didn’t need to make everyone else’s outfits “boring” to make the main characters outfits shine. Yes Cher, Dionne and other main characters outfits are better but I just love the overall vibe of the school. In other films and tv shows nowadays, like euphoria all the extras are all wearing a grey hoodie. I also love that we see in the extras of the movie that Cher and Dionne influence the others fashion sense. And that we see how they are the center of attention with everyone wearing plaids like Cher and baby tees like Dionne sometimes wear.

    • See I have a more complicated relationship with Amber because I was the girl who was really popular at one school and then we moved and I was made fun of for my outfits never being quite right. For 10 years I was the Amber even though I stopped trying to be like the more popular girls going into high school. They didn't let up until I left the graduation "lockdown" party and never saw them again. I admire her confidence but I see that there is a bunch of insecurity hiding behind false bravado, too. But she went big every day. She put herself out there and that's more than I can say.

    • @@rebeccagilpin3245 I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Being criticised constantly for a creative outlet such as fashion can be very disheartening. At least you’re free to dress as you please now, I hope? I can definitely see where you’re coming from with Amber. I was teased a lot for wearing clothes that were “different” too. Even now I feel “outrageous” isn’t the right word for Amber’s clothes. I used to be the girl who wore flower crowns over her purple pixie haircut, glitter eyeshadow like Ke$ha, black lipstick, and Dr Martens. My style inspiration was Helena Bonham Carter 😆 I think that sounds a little more outrageous than anything Amber wore haha, after all at least she was coordinated. I used to feel so jealous of girls who received compliments on their latest Adidas purchase. But then, they were spending an awful lot of money to look quite boring when I think back. I was only spending a little here and there to creatively express myself. I’ll bet I was having more fun than they were, in the long run. Even if they did take the piss out of every outfit I turned up in. That said, Cher and Dionne never looked boring, which gives Amber even more fuel to be jealous. The compliments they received were justified. I think the trouble is, society tells you to “be yourself”, but the second you’re TOO MUCH of “yourself”, you’re considered “extra” or “an attention whore”. And I hate that. Just let people live dammit!!

  • They do NOT need to make a remake of Clueless. Clueless is already a "remake" of Emma, and it does not need to be even more devoid of the source material. What they COULD do is make a sequel with the original actors (as much as they can, at least) and maybe explore Cher now all grown up? It just needs to be something much more original than a Clueless knockoff. Besides, when they re-did Heathers, they fucked it up. They completely lost the original context of the movie. Only Heathers the Musical was a good "remake," even though the storyline is a bit more different/motives are different. But it still managed to get the original context unlike the movie/show/whatever it was they made a couple of years ago. I don't want to see the same thing happen to Clueless.

  • One thing I noticed for the first time while watching this: Cher dresses down at home, in a more relaxed manner that's similar to how Josh is dressed. Which is fitting - they'd look odd next to each other if Cher wore her school outfits next to him, but by having her clothes become more casual and relaxed - even some of the colours in her clothes match his - and it makes Cher and Josh look like a matched pair. Which is good, if you want to hint at and sell a romance that could develop. Brooklyn Nine Nine does something similar with Jake and Amy - the colours and patterns of their clothes meshed well next to each other, making them look cohesive and visually appealing, which helps to sell a relationship, beyond the chemistry or writing.

They usually make huge mistakes in the movie industrie when designing period-costumes when it comes to historical accuracy. It is much more difficult to correctly portray a historical period than contemporary fashion. Everyone has an idea of how people dress today. It‘s takes far more effort to do the research for a distinctive time period of the past. In addition to that modern clothes are much simpler constructed then clothes was for most of the times in the past.

Knowing that so many people are caught up with today’s fashion, portraying it in film and shows is hard because you want approval from viewers. Like in the video many people don’t have much knowledge about historically accurate clothing which in ways makes it easier for them because viewers don’t really know wrong from right. Yes it’s hard for historical costume designers due to research but contemporary clothing is also quite difficult, because it’s overlooked most of the time saying that they have everything they need by looking at modern fashion. Contemporary costume deserves more praise instead of criticism because it’s truly very hard to nail contemporary costume on the head while getting peoples approval.

A wrong modern look is much more glaring and obvious than a wrong historical dress. General public don't have much knowledge about historical accuracy so the wrong one's are not that obvious. Meanwhile contemporary and modern looks are more accessible and the public knows more about them so the wrong choices are easier to spot.

That’s why Amber sometimes copies Cher cause Cher use to help Amber with her style and maybe that’s why she wears a lot of outrageous outfits so she can have more attention than her former friend. • As somebody who was young and fashionable when the movie came out it is a bit weird hearing it being analysed by later generations because it was really fashion-forward at the time and while it was not what 'everybody' was wearing, it sure represented what we were wearing to the clubs. The A-line mini skirts were all the rage as well as the short-sleeved empire waisted short dresses, knee-high flat/low heel boots and then in-came the over the knee high socks. At the time I really wanted to wear glitter eye-shadow but there were none in the stores so my girlfriend and I would put kid's glitter glue on our eyelids. The popularity of cardigans was also a sign of the cyclical nature of fashion with 50's style cardigan sets being extremely fashionable and practical. Overall the early 90's fashion was very masculine/unisex but the rise of the supermodel and movies like Clueless changed that and swung fashion to being more different for the sexes. Now we're having another parallel trend of unisex clothing through sportswear instead of grunge thanks to the pandemic.

  • I think what has made Emma and Cher likable- is they are innocent in their behavior. They are just Clueless. Emma is never purposefully cruel, with a funny sarcastic inner self, and of course a spoilt mindset- but is the darling of her family and neighborhood- with only Knightley calling her out. Similarly with Cher, she is rarely challenged and doesn’t see repercussions for her actions until the movie and so has room to grow

  • I actually love Amber's cartoonishly vintage style. It really reminds me of the costumes from The Fifth Element, which came out a few years later in 1997. The movie's costumes were designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, who rose to prominence in the late Eighties and early Nineties, and who also designed Madonna's famous "conical bra" corset. Amber's sailor outfit in particular really reminded me of the flight attendant costumes in The Fifth Element, but also was reminiscent of the French sailor references that Gaultier often incorporated into his ready-to-wear collections and perfume lines. Gaultier's style was part pantomime camp, part edgy, which I think described Amber's style too. She makes me think of the people who dress every day in vintage looks with their hair done in a rockabilly style, really committing themselves to the aesthetic. She's a lover of fashion history, especially the Fifties and the Eighties, but likes updating it with hints of what's happening today.

There's a fashion illustration of Cher and Dionne's iconic suit outfits I used to love looking at in one of my textbooks. Also not sure if you haven't done this already, but an analysis on Uma Thurman's outfits as Poison Ivy in Batman Forever would be interesting! Or Lucy and Mina's designs in the 1992 Dracula.

They actually incorporated a bit of Cluless inspo into the storylines of the members of the group besides just the outfits. They also performed the song in question in different versions of that suit, namely the same suit in different colors (pastel turquoise and lilac), other Cher outfits like the ones on her computer, and even a nod at and mix with the Heathers movie by dressing each of the 4 members in the "representative" colors of each Heathers character - red for the "leader" of the pack, green for the one who's jealous of her, yellow for the sweetheart and blue for the protagonist who's a little bit different 🤭

  • Clueless has amazing fashion but I'm slightly rubbed the wrong way with how the film itself hates masculine/androgynous outfits. Even when Tai ditches the popular girl get up to be "herself", she still doesn't go back to her original style. I do get that being more confident can mean being comfortable showing more of your body and wearing more colours but in the end, it does feel like the film rejecting masculinity in women (which is made evident through the stylist criticizing grunge girls and Cher dissing the male modern fashion of that time). I get it's a relatively old movie so maybe it wasn't tropey then but it does fall into the "girls are androgynous because they're insecure" and never that's how they genuinely want to present themselves.
