    • I disagree. Andy earned her place to go to Paris. She even managed to get the impossible copy of the unpublished book through the connections she made and impressed Miranda. While Emily kept being the snotty stuck up Miranda-fan girl. Sorry, if you watch the movie again, Emily's only efforts are in starving herself to look good while Andy got to use networking and learning fast to anticipate Miranda's next move (that's how she earned to be called "Andrea" and deliver the book). I hope you will never need to work with someone slightly senior who thinks they automatically deserve promotion just because they keep on doing same thing for years as opposed to someone with brand new ideas and looking for solutions for seemingly impossible situations.

I really sympathized with her doing everything correctly and giving the job 1000% but being treated worse than garbage by Miranda and finally demoted and cut from the Paris trip. I really felt sad for her still stuck in that job at the end where she will never be good enough.

    • Well, it's kind of the point of Andy's turnaround at the end, too, isn't it? That she realised Emily's tragedy and realised she did not want to keep contributing to it.

      @beth12svist@beth12svist Жыл бұрын
    • It is sad, but hey she got to stay, there were other Paris trips! 😊 The injury from the car accident though, I hope she didn't suffer any permanent deformity or chronic pain. I hope she didn't need any major surgeries. I feel bad for her in that hospital. Sucks to lose a trip to Paris, but definitely sucks harder to be lying in a hospital with your body being broken and bruised. It's funny, I think our different backgrounds make us both feel really bad for her, but what we feel bad for the most is not the same. 😅

The friends weren't as bad as you think, they just saw how Andy changed to become part of the world she mocked herself before and it wasn't even ever a thing she wanted to be. Emily was harsh and prickly, but she was working in a harsh environment with a new girl who didn't respect the job. Andrea's chef boyfriend would be the first to understand the pressures of long hours and people that are hard to work with. It's the only bit of the film that winds me up because it's so illogical that he wouldn't be supportive.

I think Andy tried to get bangs a couple of years back, changed her mind about them and let them grow out but did not cut the other lengths to match. After rewatching the film, I thought it was so incredibly silly and naiive of Andy when she 1.) Took a WAY TOO personal interest in Miranda's personal life after one simple exchange that won Andy's sympathy, and yet 2.) Took an unnecessarily self righteous position when Miranda looked out for herself at, unfortunately, Nigel's expense. What was she expecting? I can't believe THAT ultimately ended up being the reason that she broke up with new jerk bf and immediately quit her job/left Miranda's side so abruptly, after going through such great lengths to try to warn her about her impending position. She goes from extreme sympathy, to extreme high horse. Honestly, what is Miranda and Nigel to Andy anyway? She's way too vested in them and treats them as something beyond what they actually are: boss and coworker. She cares too much.

  • One thing about this movie that was so important to me as a budding woman: At the beginning of the movie, Andy dresses the way she does in part because of internalized misogyny; she thinks dressing more fashionably makes her vain, shallow and less smart (i.e., too caught up in frivolous "stuff"), maybe even immodest or "slutty." And her friends and boyfriend confirmed her bias by laughing at her beginning to take an interest in fashion. But Andy was smart and showed courage; she was able to open her mind up to her colleagues' perspectives and she realized that femininity is not bad. Dressing feminine or sexy does not make you less of a person. It can be empowering and self-actualizing. One of my favorite movies. Thank you ModernGurlz for the review.

    • Yes! I definitely agree with you on that, I’ve been told before that I’m very “feminine” and that my fashion sense is “flashy” which can have both negative and positive connotations to it like you stated. From the way people (*boys and especially “I’m not like the other girls” girls), look at you funny when you talk about fashion and makeup to anything remotely seen as “feminine” being laughed at shows that society really is misogynistic. I’m glad like you, I’ve developed into my own being and now that femininity is empowering. Being female is not a weakness, I can be all these great things AND look good when doing it.

    • Maybe if Andy wanted to emulate masculinity, I could accept this point of view, but she _did_ dress feminine even before the fashion-transformation. She wore skirts, she wore colours and patterns, she didn't intend to _not_ look feminine. She didn't intend to look sexy though, but that's another issue. Blaming it on internal misogyny is a far stretch. Yes, Andy thinks fashion is superficial, but fashion is not uniquely female. Men can be vain, even without being fashionable. (so how about your internal misogyny to associate vanity with femininity?) Her choice to not put time and effort into looking stylish is a consequence of her choice to put her time and effort into other things that mattered to her more at that time. We all have a limited amount of time and energy. And you are basically saying that any woman not putting some of that into dressing has internal misogyny! which it outrageous! Andy got into a situation when she needed to develop an interest in fashion, and she got something out of it, which is great for her. She could have gone to culinary magazine and learned to appreciate wine - or a yoga magazine and learned how to be present in her body. It'd be the same story. Is style more important than enjoying your food? or mindfulness? is it? Does everyone have to do everything? (no. the answer is: no.)

Her pink and white top is nearly identical in style and silhouette to the outfit Emily wears on Andy's first day of work at the beginning of the film (note the black cardigan and boxy cut with the v-neck), symbolizing how she truly has become the New Emily and the top assistant. There's a deleted scene where she has a more general meeting with someone in HR at Elias Clark, the publishers and was told there were two jobs available, one of which was as a road test assistant at Auto Universe Magazine. When she said it was this or Auto Universe, she meant it! She then got sent straight up to Runway to meet Emily, so didn't exactly have time to prep. • @@stefanmakara373 I personally don't think they needed to explicitly address that, the audience isn't stupid and her character growth and increasingly nuanced understanding of the industry is pretty clear to us throughout the film. Main characters are usually flawed so that we can see them grow and change. Lots of people are arrogant and dismissive towards the fashion industry- Andy is real!! she represents a very real type of intellectual who views the industry in this way (edit: as someone mentioned below, this rejection was likely from internalised misogyny as Andy subconsciously rejected this world in the hopes of looking smarter, being taken more seriously etc.). I don't think the movie praises her for having this attitude at the beginning, she is deliberately shown to be judgey, entitled and naive- that's why we get the whole monologue where miranda humbles her for thinking she's above fashion. I also don't think the movie praises her rejection of that lifestyle at the end either- the whole message of the film is balance and nuance- they don't need to tell us this directly because we can use film comprehension to realise that miranda and the fashion industry are complicated- both are impressive, smart, creative but also toxic at the same time. Andy comes away with a more understanding view towards this world, but inevitably her renewed value for work/life balance trumps that- we can't hate her for being human lol

      @marcdaisy12@marcdaisy123 жыл бұрын
    • @@marcdaisy12 I think, she should have been humbled more. You can make characters, that are human, but still likeable, like Emily. She is not some saint, but you can see her reasons for treating Andrea coldly, whereas Andrea is just very, very entitled. I get, that she pushes fashion away to appear "smarter", because "fashionable equals dumb" was a huge stereotype at the time, but that doesn't justify her being disrespectful to other people. If she was as smart, as she thought she was, she would know, that running any successful large scale business is not easy. I don't think many people can relate to coming to a job interview right after getting a degree and acting like you are too good for this. This could all be saved, if everything didn't work out perfectly for her in the end. I would like to see her get some "punishment" for her behavior, so she can be redeemed, but instead she got everything, she wanted without putting in any extra effort and left the magazine. Especially when compared to Emily, it didn't feel right. Emily, who worked so hard for her goal, just to see it being handed to Andrea, is much more relatable.

  • As an artist myself, whenever I'm drawing or designing a new character, I always make sure that their outfit matches their personality. I also tend to play with shapes a lot. Round shapes - typically used for characters that are sweet, kind, innocent, cowardly and naive. Square shapes - used for character that are strong, sturdy and reliable. Triangles / sharp shapes - used for characters that are cunning, dangerous, manipulative and villainous. Although I do believe that the social status & financial situation of that character also plays an important role, I believe that expectations can also be subverted : like having a very wealthy character going around wearing simple clothes (I feel like this trope is more common among rich characters that are on the good side, because evil rich characters tend to go out of their way dressing as lavishly as possible).

When I first saw it I thought "she's gone too far with that hat. It turns the outfit into a costume", but maybe that's what we are supposed to think, that at this point and having to make all the sacrifices she has to make for that job, maybe she's going too far and turning into a caricature of what she hated so much in the beginning. The outfit is too much because in that moment she realized that she is in too deep and we have to see it. I don't know. Maybe I'm just over analyzing.

  • As an adult with a job, who works as an assistant to a director, I find it hard to believe that Andy got hired!! She didn’t show an interest in the field nor did she do her research on the people she was would potentially be working with. Loved pretty much everything else about this movie, except for that bit and the friends!

  • I rewatched the movie this year and I just realised how actually good and admirable Emily's character is. I mean, you don't see alot of people who is as passionate as she is toward her work! I even got frustrated when Miranda doesn't even realised how lucky she is to have a secretary like Emily!

  • I would argue contemporary costume design is just as hard as period costumes, because when you are doing a period piece , you are recreating the looks and feelings of the past so people expect it to be dated, but with contemporary, you have the task to make the clothes look appropriate for the time and be timeless at the same time: it has to work for the time your movie is set and still has to be fashionable even years later so it won't make your movie age badly... Nothing but respect for costume designers!!! ❤👌🏻🤩

  • I'm glad other people see what I saw about the bf and friends being jerks. Didn't the bf even gaslight her? It's been awhile, but I remember he was pissy and acting all depressed because she couldn't make it to his bday party. Wouldn't blow out the candle, opting for a guilt trip instead. Later in the movie, she reminded him of how he was mad at her for missing the party, and he replied, "What, am I 5?", like he wasn't upset... He was so full of it, dishonest, and hypocritical. He didn't think twice about moving to another state, but smiles and says they can work something out. I mean, he has his job all lined up so it's all good now and she is expected to pick up her life and move? But... he couldn't take her working long hours at a job for a year or two? What a toxic bf.

  • Something I've always loved about the styling and approach to fashion in this movie is that it's (maybe?) the only fashion-oriented movie I can think of where the male gaze is not at all considered or even mentioned. The clothing and styling is about about fashion, rather than looking attractive. Emily's makeup looks like something out of those "top ten trends men HATE" articles, Andy's never taught how to dress to look thinner or hide her body, there's no mention of women wanting to look hot or sexy in ANY scene. Miranda's age is only mentioned once and she's never dressed to look younger either.

  • Am I the only one who saw how bad her friends really were from the start, when I watched the movie when it came out? Not real friends. They were toxic, but gladly accepted gifts Andrea brought from work. Bad boyfriend as well, not supportive at all when she had a hard time at work nor when she was becoming successful. That's a type who will always only think about himself and will feel threatened by his woman success.
