In recent years, a small amount of hackers and gamers have been anonymously reporting fake hostage situations, shootings, and other violent crimes designed to send elite police units, like SWAT teams, to unsuspecting people at their residences.
Swatting is a dangerous and expensive prank, which is easy to pull off. Swatters are utilizing easily accessible technology to mask or even alter the ID during calls to 911 dispatchers. With SWAT teams and paramilitary gear becoming the norm across small town America, these calls have predictably chaotic results.
Despite the hyper-vigilance of America's law enforcement, authorities still struggle to defend themselves from the unlikeliest of threats - tech-savvy teenagers. Police militarization meets hacker culture as VICE News investigates the dangerous crime of swatting.

    • Gangs, riots, cops, mass shootings, cops getting shot at, and the scary guy on the street sexually harassing your girlfriend after trying to panhandle money out of you last week. Taking a stand against police having swat gear doesn't fit into a decent respectable liberal agenda. People have a problem with weed being illegal, and it causes too many people to be on the wrong side of the law,....but the law is there and what it is for a lot of good reasons.

First they need to identify the company who is providing the anonymity, then get court papers to legally extract information about this criminal from the company (because you cant just ask them), and only then you can actually start making moves towards this person, but often that is just the first layer because of fake identities and proxies.

    • GoodwillWright I guess so.

      @hotsexspy2267@hotsexspy22679 жыл бұрын
    • GoodwillWright Now let's think about the crime a bit,,, It does demonstrate and provide a platform for presenting a "Fear the big bad policeman" message. Not unlike Terrorism. Could an additional telephone line be used to verify the source of the call? Of course! A computerized dialer could handle it in .6 seconds. A busy signal would indicate a call from the same source as the caller I.D. A ring tone would indicate a potentially bogus call. A simple PLL circuit could tell the difference and provide this information in about a second. The telephone company used to publish a document known as a Cross Bar manual. A few pages in and you would realize that the police can actually listen in on any phone at any time since the early 70's. The telephone companies ANI billing computer is not connected to the caller I.D. system and retains the real source and destination of all calls even after they are over. This swatting crime happens only because people someone somewhere wants the general public to remain ignorant of these capabilities. Also the police might need a valid excuse for a warrant-less search and then say oops not my fault. Is real swatting a myth? Maybe.... And maybe a crime is allowed to be committed because they want to set a trap. The swatter would need to know the victims address, phone number and none of those previously mention checks would be utilized. Celebrities do get stalked. The question is by whom.

Also consider that these are SWAT officers and wouldn't be there unless it was a really dangerous scenario, hence, deeming the "shoot to kill" option necessary. Anyone whose been in the special forces will tell you that. And a lot of the SWAT officers are former military.

In this video I see great aquipment and top tactics. What I would suggest is compulsory physical fitness. Most of this guys are owerweight. At the end of the day all equipment and tacticsare only worth as much as a capable security guard.. Best Regards

  • imagin an actual terrorist did something like this. they swat some random house saying i'm holding a family hostage, most of the police, fire, paramedics etc rush over and it was a hox and not to far away the terrorist uses this to cause an attack somewhere and no one is really able to stop him/her or even they from causing harm and by the time law and emergency sevices arrive its pretty much to late and this ends up becoming an actual pattern with this group in their attacks. they swat someone to cause panic and then do an actual attack, this needs to be dealt with quickly. (p.s something like that would actually be an interesting idea for a show like S.W.A.T to being awareness to this problem)

  • Government power consolidation for dummies: 1) Introduce potential threat, or make a mountain out of a molehill. 2) Hype it up so that the public takes it seriously. 3) Use that to justify increasing government intervention, so that they have a large number of superequipped mercenaries who will follow orders in the name of domestic security. I see that Murdoch has made what we can call a smart investment.

    • Jon Forbes I am not an AJ follower/listener, and I think that most of what he says is way off, but obviously some of his 'news' are based on facts. Besides, you really don't have to believe global eugenics and "the elites and their progeny going to the stars" to see why increasing militarization coupled with federal laws that give governments more control over people is a dangerous thing. Harry Holler Do you think Obama is at the root of the issue? Is he the final shot caller in this? I am aware that increasing militarization of the police are largely government initiatives, but who does the government really serve? All those purchases, and the ability to utilize all that equipment along with the people who are to use it to carry out their mission, work for the enrichment of a small minority, from both the government and the private sector. Not two mention that those two have been historically interlinked for thousands of years.

    • I also love it how VICE doesn't seem to be willing to have a rigorous discussion about whether we need militarization for the protection of civilians to such a scale, and what would be the incidents where such weaponry would be appropriate. Instead, they seem to be presenting the entire documentary in the following manner: "Well, we have an increasing number of equipment in local county police forces that they sometimes use during small operations. But now SWATTING is the new threat, so in addition to all the equipment and weaponry, the police must now be ready to counter those malicious trouble-makers on the web. This way, every citizen feels secure, JUST IN CASE it may be used for something more than just pranking the fuck out of people, because they know in advance how ridiculously armed to the teeth the police is becoming." Typical mainstream media fear-mongering and capitalizing on small issues.

  • As former U.S. army soldier I do not believe swat should be wearing any form of camouflage. Stick to your straight black. This is what most people have a problem with. You look more like PMCs then anything. It needs to stop! I have no problem with police having better weapons to combat criminals & possibly an invading force. Let's be real, police are the 1st resistance any invading force will make contact with. I only have a problem with the camouflage uniforms. You need to stick with you standard black! Current thoughts: I guess it's whatever. It's grown on me that they have these uniforms. As many have stated, these uniforms & vehicles are donated or sold cheap to the police. If it saves money & guarantees police safety, I'm all for it.

    • There is also no reason swat needs an MRAP armored vehicle. You can use an old fashion armored van or an armored courier truck used by money couriers. Could possibly use a HMMVV as well. No reason police need a specialized combat vehicle designed to support infantry on the battlefield!

Anyone who claims their were in the military doesn't talk about being sworn in as some huge monumental moment in their career as a hero. Since you got discharged so fast that's probably the only thing you have under your belt that you like to brag about. There's a big difference between making it through basic and ait and ait and actually serving our country. It's funny how anyone in the military that has actually seen combat is super humble, while wanna be's talk about getting sworn in, or all the hardships they had in their two weeks of service. Nice try

If you weren't a fucking dumbass, you'd understand police are nothing more than 'public historians'. They show up at a crime scene after the assailants are gone, and take record. And no you don't have the balls to do that job, and neither do they. Because you're all pussies. Pussies are always history's most famous degenerate authoritarians.

I saw plenty of other names that do the same thing as him. He'll never get caught he doesn't even live here, he's in the UK. The only way anyone will get caught is if the FBI does large scale investigations into these kinds of things. In order to start that, people need to raise awareness of the hackers why can't we do an Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness to stopping hackers?

    • Because Rural Cops like their nifty toys. They can raid houses that might be smoking pot (even if the cops do it or worse too) and face no consequences for shooting the family dog or throwing a flashgrenade in an infant crib, and do not have to pay for or replace a new dooror damages : EVEN WHEN THEY DON"T FIND ANYTHING. It is a good way to chase people out they don't like. Sad but common to have rural terrorism when they first get their new gear.

That means this sort of violent, paramilitary raid is happening in about 124 homes every day - or more likely every night - not in an overseas combat zone, but here in American neighborhoods. The police, who are supposed to serve and protect communities, are instead waging war on the people who live in them." It is not o.k for the govt to enter your home, dressed in black, pointing a'k 47s at you: and when they don't find anything, they don't get in trouble, if they shoot your dog, (which is standard, they are taught to do this) or flashbang your baby, or your grandpa, and later find they got the wrong house, or their informant lied, they don't get in trouble. None. They don't even have to pay to fix the door they broke. It is not right, but at this point it is not illegal either. It is legal This will happen 124 times today. Shoot first, ask later.
