  • Having been in New Orleans watching that Rams/Saints "no call" pass interference, I can tell you that the referees made it a point to leave the stadium VERY quickly (and quietly) after the game. Some lawsuits were actually filed by fans against the NFL for damages (loss of vendor revenue or something like that), deficiency of product, and a couple of other oddball suits.

    • Actually, this one is closer than it looks! The contact from the corner is NOT as soon as it looks, and the ball is PASSING the 2 players just about simultaneous to the contact! Lions, Tate catch: This one the officials got right and followed the rules correctly, just a stupid rule. It's entirely possible that the team could have gotten lined up and run a play to spike the ball in the 8 seconds that were left. Lions, Calvin catch: That's a catch.

Then you have to go to the fact if he survives a crash with the ground after that, which he obviously doesn't. Glad you're not a ref because you're worse than Jim Joyce screwing Galaragga out of a perfect game.

    • The reason it's a touchdown is because the rule for who "wins" a contested catch between the offense and the defense is shitty and doesn't take into account who has better control of the ball. By rule, if a player from each team is "fighting" over a catch, the catch goes to the offense, no matter what. Even though Seattle's WR barely has his hands on it and it's clear the GB defender has it secured in his arms, the ball is, by rule, in possession of the WR. The NFL's rules suck ass.

  • Some context for the altuve clip. This was before a major sign stealing controversy emerged that revealed for the two years prior to that play, the astros had been stealing pitching signs by watching the televised broadcast and banging on trash cans when the pitch was offspeed. There were rumors that because they hadn’t been caught yet but there were no cans heard in 2019, that they might’ve switched to more covert methods (like a buzzer under altuve’s shirt). This was only fueled by altuve telling his team not to rip off his shirt and dodging the question after the game. • The genesis for all of those controversial NFL catch/no-catch calls is the Calvin Johnson TD catch against the Bears that was overruled. That single play set the precedent for over a decade to come. The Dez Bryant call happened because of the Calvin Johnson call. The NFL has somewhat recently wiped its hands clean of the burdensome Calvin Johnson precedent. They've officially disowned it, meaning that plays like the Dez Bryant play are now a catch going forward.

  • Thanks to ChatGPT this is the correct answer for the Dez Bryant catch. AI will settle it. "The ruling on the field that Dez Bryant did not maintain control of the ball throughout the entire process of the catch, leading to the play being overturned and ruled incomplete, was consistent with the catch rules in the NFL at that time. According to the rule in place at the time, a receiver had to maintain control of the ball throughout the entire process of the catch, including going to the ground. He does not make the catch until the 2nd step. He finally secures the ball in both hands, for a moment. He then lunges to the goal line, lands with the ball first, which then pops up 8 inches into the air after batting against the ground, and then he re-catches it in the endzone In the case of Dez Bryant's catch, it was determined that he did not maintain control of the ball as he went to the ground. The ball came loose when it made contact with the ground, which led to the officials ruling it incomplete upon review. From the perspective of the rule in place at the time, the call was technically correct."

The rule is specific, making an act or motion towards the endozne is a separate act and can only apply to a caught ball. So dezs catch is much more unclear. Where as a few of these are in the end zone. Horrible consistency

The goal did happen in the 2nd leg in the 103rd min making it 2-1 to France, but if it didn't it still looked like France was going to score, and if they didn't it was still going to be 50/50 in the penalty shootout.
