"Platoon Leader" (1988) - Vietnam War Michael Dudikoff Action Drama
A young officer just out of West Point begins his first tour of duty in Vietnam only to find his men worn down and cynical about the war. His men don't respect him until he gets wounded and returns to be a wiser soldier and a better commander. It is loosely based on James R. McDonough's memoir of the same name. It is the only movie directed by Aaron Norris not to star his brother Chuck Norris.
Lieutenant Jeff Knight meets cynicism when taking command of sergeant Michael McNamara's tour veterans platoon in a Vietnamese trench camp. Unlike his predecessor, who hid till the end of his tour, Jeff takes charge, experiences the manual doesn't allow coping with all realities and gets wounded. He returns, now fully respect by men and superiors. Besides the Vietcong, the platoon wrestles with the inscrutable villagers, which the GIs officially protect, but also fear as some collaborate with them, other covertly with the Cong, either way subject to bloody reprisals.
Surprisingly the film was shot in South Africa and released on October 1, 1988 - For education, entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration. We hope you enjoy and even learn something. Never forget!

THIS IS , ...ANOTHER ONE OF THE BEST VIETNAM MOVIES , !!! ... I , ... JUST LOVE IT , !!! ... GREAT MICHAEL DUDIKOFF , ... GREAT FILM , !!! ... 👍👍👍
My dad showed me this movie when I was in 6th grade, cool portrayal of Vietnam. I swear those Vietnam vets went through some confusing shit. But they're like order in chaos. Thank you for putting this on KZhead!
I remember my dad getting me the movie poster for this as i was an Army brat and my father being a Nam vet didn't hurt. I like the movie as a kid, but it wasn't till I saw it again after 20 yrs in the Army and multiple combat deployment do i understand. Underrated for it's time.
Great movie. I was commissioned in ‘89. I had three platoon sergeants. They were all grizzled bad asses. My last platoon daddy was a Vietnam era SF veteran. He was a graduate of Nebraska. He was an all-American safety for coach Devaney and won a national championship. Fricking stud. Ronald Harper. RIP amigo. I learned real warrior leadership from you.
I was enlisted 86-89, and I was fortunate enough to serve with a few of the last Vietnam era soldiers. Mainly E7 and up.
I enlisted in 1978, by 1983 most Vietnam Vets were retired by US Army. They were damaged goods, probably for the best, all the drug dealing and money extortion in the barracks in West Germany were controlled by Vietnam Era NCO’S I saw it and lived it, by 1983 it was a new army, only real good ones were allowed to stay and reenlist . There were murders and race clashes and rampant crime in the barracks, I’ve seen shit go down and soldiers convicted and sent to Leavenworth .
89..?? The war was still on going..??
@evolution8662 He was referring to the Vietnam vets who were still on active duty in 89. There were few by 1989, and it was memorable whenever you met one. It was for me.
@@FenderGreg Oic.....was it realistic the way the movie potray the war??
I'm glad I finally took the time to view this film. It is as good as any number of other movies dealing with the combat theme of the Vietnam war. I felt the ending was superb and the proper message to leave with the audience, whether they have ever served or are just your average civilian. So many of the films released over the years on Vietnam focused on guilt, failure and the broken spirit of morale, with only a future filled with depressing forebodings. Platoon Leader's closing scene reveals that the show must go on, that the unity of command between Officers and Men can and will endure. They loyally served their country and asked not what it need do for them; right till the final calls of duty were completed.
Civilian or average cannon fodder for the armed forces
This is a good example of a B-rated movie doing a lot of things better than big-budget Hollywood productions. The opening scene, the balance between action and humanity, the way they showed how many shots miss in a firefight without turning into Stormtrooper Aim... it's gooood.
Good movie, better then most big budget movies..I love the actors and the way the stories plays out
If you liked the movie, read the book, one of the best, so that it’s required reading at a few military academies around the world.
I’m a Vietnam vet too, 74 years old, was 18 back then
My snappy salute to your courage and bravery, Sir! You may live a long and happy life. GOD BLESS YOU
Welcome home brother.

Night Fight at the Fire Base: "Welcome to McDonald's, we never close, Thousands Served" Still stunned by the flying in this film. Especially the Night CAS. No CGI. So much work. This is epic work.
Good lower budget movie. I remember renting this from Blockbuster"s back in the 90s.
Remarkably good movie. Surprised I never saw this.
One of my favorite movies, I never tire of watching it, a big hug for all those warriors who fought in Vietnam from Mexico
I have to come in agreement. Best Vietnam movie out there for realism , even Platoon, in my opinion. I was there . Didn't see many things like this but I know it happened from talking to my many 11 bravo friends at the Vietnam Veterans outreach program back in the early '80s.
Amazing film! After Army OCS this was own of my favorite movies. It really shows what a young LT. is called to do!

I grew up during the Vietnam War, saw the numbers every night on the news when I got home from school. My father and I always argued about the war. He said it was necessary and I said it was a slaughter of our boys. Then they were treated like criminals when they came home. Friends that came home were changed for ever and not for the better 😢. So many were embarrassed that they were and are still. I will always shake the hand of all our vets for their service to our country! Very good movie of the men who were forced into a war we should of never gotten into
AMEN TO THAT!
Yes, I am Still ASHAMED of the treatment our young men were met with upon returning home. SHAME on the American people. Thank you to all who served & are serving our country 🫡👵🏻👩🌾❣️🇺🇸
For what looks like a low budget film with not many stars, it was actually quite good, worth a watch anyway.
I'd like to take a moment to mention Robert F. Lyons, who plays Sgt. McNamara. He was THE 70's B flick guy, my childhood is full of his supporting roles.
I love this movie, my gosh if theyd of realized the legendary classics they were making

A classic from my childhood.. Dudikoff was like JCVD but before JCVD. Thank you LionHeart
Outstanding film! I'm glad both the LT and the SGT made it. I was afraid they'd both get it.
I never seen it back in the 80s. First view was about 3yrs back but i don't remember much. This time i was pretty much plastered all over the screen.. sucking up the awesome 80s vibe. Enjoyed the story and the over acting here 'n there. Really wonderful flick. Thank you !
I love that the dude who played the Russian Colonel in Red Dawn plays the Major in this. Wonderful!
Same character.
This Movie was way, way underrated
I've heard similar stories from vietnam combat vets regarding the nco talk with the LT. It's the same routine almost every day while out in the bush: eat, sleep, go on patrol, see some action or not, return to base, eat, sleep and then do it again the next day.....
Knowing my luck in 1972, I didn't bother waiting to see if my number would be called by the draft. I joined the Marine Corps so I could choose my MOS (job). But, halfway through basic our senior drill instructor told us he had some bad news. He told us that they had started pulling the Marines out of 'Nam and that none of us would be going there! I had mixed feelings about that news, because I already psyched myself up knowing I was going. But, at the same time the news was a great relief too. But, after talking to many Marines who were there, I was damn glad I didn't have to go!
I'm glad you didn't have to go. It wasn't pleasant. Vietnam 1969-70 vet.
Someday the war's gonna end. - Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore
Michael Dudikoff is an 80s legend.
That's definitely is an awesome movie 🎬 10 outta 10 🎖🏅🏆
Now that’s what i call old-skool pyrotechnics 🔥
I watch it over and over, that's how good the movie is.

Loved this movie. Thank you for sharing it.
Did 5 tours in the Delta as a River Rat. Hit with shrapnel first night of TET while in Dong Tam . Watch apocalypse now to get a look at my life.
Thank you for your service! The brown water navy is under recognized. My grandfather was ww1 navy USS Iowa and Chicago. Served 1914 to 1919.
Did two tours in Vietnam with 1😢 18th and Cam Ran Bay and 155 transportation
5 tours!!! Why did you go so many times? Just curious.

He was a platoon leader and a ninja.
Hell yeah, loved this movie as a kid.

Thank you so much for uploading these kind of movies! God bless po...
Great movie and enjoyed it
It took a while but when the action started, it never stopped! A good movie and I'd like to read the book now. Don't know how I missed this one when it came out. Probably cuz everyone was paying more attention to "Platoon" in 88. Another good one I watched was "Tribes" with Jan Michael Vincent. An older Viet Nam movie but another "hidden gem". Both are worth watching.
Yes tribes was another good under rated movie
I think it's available here.
Have this film somewhere . It was really good . So so many good men and boys lost there lifes when they shouldn't of been there .

I remember my grandparents were telling stories about 2nd wordwar...it's america who saves filipinos, when japanese invaded the Phil's.and killed many Filipinos...THANK YOU AMERICA🙏❤️🌹 my highest respect of U American soldier😍🤩💕
We didn't salute in Vietnam. Good way to get shot by a sniper, so no saluting. Medevac helicopters were unarmed but the medics were allowed to carry a pistol but no M-60's. The guards protected the compounds but not the villages. That was the job of ARVN soldiers and militias. The tree lines is where most snipers hid when the helicopters landed but they quickly retreated and hid after shooting some of the American soldiers. They did not stand and fight. Most of the attacks came in the dark hours.

Let me ask you something- I was in the IDF so I find this a little odd- why do American soldiers in vietnam never strap on their helmets, it’s gonna fall as soon as you start running and ducking in a fire fight, I see the same thing in ww2 movies- any thoughts??
I’m glad you put this movie in hq to not blurry or nothing I hope you put more Vietnam war movies up like chuck Norris missing in action 1 and platoon and apocalypse now and all other old Vietnam war movies 😊
This is one of those feel good, war is a great thing movies !

My Dad serverd in Nam and for years did not talk about it! He ended up getting a job with no benefits! Was not old enough yet to get medicare so i filled out his VA benefits! He was really hard set against it but once , he was in the system and realized the Nam vets are more respected these days he proudly wears his marine cap and the sticker on his truck !

I noticed the use of curved magazines in the M-16s in the movie. In the late 1960s, we used straight box detachable 20 rd magazines that we never filled beyond 18 rd.
@@fact2894 Obviously, technical accuracy is completely lost on you.
The curved magazines were referred ta as a banana magazine. The ones that I’m familiar with were 40 round.
@@danielpurcell7395 I wasn't aware that 40 rd mags were ever issued for the M-16/M4 rifles. I do know that 30 rd curved mags were issued for the 16, but that was long after I got out of the Army. I don't know what the troops called them. We did call the 30 rd curved mags in the AK-47s banana mags, because of their length and curvature. Being a 7.62 mm round, the 30 rd AK mags were long.
They are also wearing Marine Corps flack jackets, not Army! @@videomaniac108

This is one of the best Viet nam movies with Michael Dudicalve
i spent a year 68-69 in vietnam on lz jamie. you can google and find info. our LZ was the 2nd and 7th Cav Delta Company and 2nd 19th Arty B Battery totalling about 185 soldiers when fully staffed...which was never. When i left there was not even one soldier that was there when i first arrived, i.e., 100% turnover. this movie is a fairly realistic look...some parts were for the movie but other parts did not rise to the level we dealt with. All in all, it's as realistic of a movie about life on a forward firebase in vietnam as I have seen.
Not to be confused with 'Platoon' also an extremely good movie.
Didnt you find Platoon was too hung up on the story about Sgt Elias v Sgt Barnes
I was waiting for Lt. Dan to show up.
