In this lesson I am going to teach you in detail when to use ALL 5 German prepositions of direction. In German we call them "Richtungspräpositionen". They are: nach, zu, in, auf, an.
Specially the two prepositions in and zu kind be quiet confusing as they sometimes both can be used for the same sentence... but... there is a small difference, which I will explain in this video.
It's a topic which that lots of German students struggle with. But there are actually certain rules or tendencies which you can apply to get the German prepositions of direction right from the beginning.

  • I am currently studying A2.2 and no teacher in Germany has ever taught me this valuable information. Not even any application, nor my German husband. Actually, most teachers skip a lot of stuff and expect us to know everything on our own. Even the text books we have to use in the class lack several essential information.   • It's so nice to learn a different language and all the special cases. Here in Brazil, we speak portoghese, and we also have a lot of those little rules in our prepositions, but we never pay attention, because we are used to. When we learn other langue, we start to realize how our language is hard as well to a foreigner. Loved the video, helped me a lot.

  • I cant remember how many hours Ive spent learning german for the past 2 years, and I never had a teacher actually explain this sort of stuff, they just brush over it.   • Finally a German teacher who is clear and thorough (and lesson material that is well-organized and complete)! Now I will need plenty of practice choosing which version of "to" to use, in which contexts, in order to get used to the collocations. I wish an instructor like you (and maybe your team, if there is another author for this material) would produce textbooks with workbooks, online exercises, and curriculum for professional German teachers, because my current textbook is severely lacking in clarity, detail, examples, exercises. Coming from English, I need practice to adjust to choosing different prepositions in situations which all require only "to" in English with no change of form for articles or any grammatical cases.

  • Thank you so much for your classes! You make German seem so easy to understand/learn. Now I see why we have Portuguese (Brazil) classes from Kindergarten until graduation (high school)-----the alphabet, sounds of each letter, spelling, division of syllables, stressed syllables, diacritic accents, syntax analysis, verb (regular and irregular) conjugations rules, and tenses. It makes it so much easier to learn other languages, especially when it comes to declinations (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive)-----we have the same declinations in Portuguese----direct/indirect objects, syntax, prepositions, and so on. 😛😛😛

  • I enjoy the translations from German to English and the explanations. I have just begun an intensive study course for my German residency and must learn very quickly. They speak in German about 99% of the time so much of it is just wasted time other than simple exposure. This makes it easier to confidently use small phrases and know what you are actually saying and why. Thanks

    • That way of teaching is called "the natural approach" and is how native speakers learn German. Don't be too critical of it, as we have seen that by teaching a grammar based approach to any foreign language can actually slow down learning.

  • I love how you even do left and right for us our side even though it was wrong for you how you are facing lol Currently in my German integration course and I cannot tell you how much these videos help! The course is very good but the problem is it is spoken entirely and only in German and so if I am honest, them explaining to me in German about something I do not understand during a lesson leaves me still in the same position, understanding nothing. Having just a simple explanation in English to certain things and more so, why these things are how they are, just like is explained here makes learning so much faster.   • I signed up for german classes and when I was asked about English/ German or French/German of course ( native Irish here ) I have chosen the English/German option. However, the classes started and Everything is in German! The explanations, the transcription, the tasks exercises, etc. It is a bit hard to understand so after every lesson I had to repeat all with an English dictionary. Thank you so much for your videos, I found them extremely helpful!
