and moments where he didn't: dumped a drop shot into the net in the second set tie break to give set point to Ramos and did the same again at 30/40 and lost his serve.
He was lucky af to get through this match.

Huge round of applause for Ramos for putting up a great fight. A bit more clean finishes on critical points and game could have been his.
The second set was his because in the tie break 8-7 for Ramos, Alcaraz's passing shot that was gonna go in hit the net and made him lose the set. If anyone was unlucky it was Carlos.
He was clinical. But AG was too fast.

This could be the match that makes him a champion. He so easily could have folded, but he really showed some grit out there. Every champion has bad days, but the best just refuse to lose.
Absolutely! His pedigree shows today, brought his B game into a tough match against a left handed clay specialist, drop shot not working, and still grinded out a victory shows his mental strength n will to win.

we have seen so many horrible won matches by Djoko or Nadal.... that when they are over you think.... well, he won, and noone will remember it. It is just one stepping stone to the championship.
Carlos is even giving us classic matches now like the big 4 used to do back in the day! Crazy comebacks, amazing shot-making in clutch moments, saving match points, fighting until the last point...feels like we are back in the early 2010s! The generation in between has not given us these kinds of matches very often and there is not as much excitement when the likes of Zverev and Tsitsipas go to 5 sets. With Carlos, you never no what is going to happen next!

If he had put away those volleys in the last set he might have put Alcaraz away but the son of a bitch just keeps coming and never gives up, just like Nadal
It actually boiled down to one decisive point at 4-4 in the last set. Alcaraz is not good enough to win this year.

I think every top player has to sometimes go through these tough opening round matches, when they catch an inspired opponent and are not themselves feeling their best. What was important here was the mental ability of Alcaraz to hold it together and also his stamina even in 5th set. These wins will help him with his belief that even when he plays his worst, he can win.

These are matches that build a champion’s mindset. The best lessons for Alcaraz are in times like these, not when he’s steamrolling over opponents in straight sets. Kudos to Ramos-Vinolas going toe to toe with the kid. Huge respect for him.
Ramos-Vinolas played so well in this match. Just a couple of dips in concentration at the end of the 4th set and those allowed Alcaraz back in. Amazing match from start to finish!

I caught this match live at the end of the 4th set. At the point I really thought the 19-year-old would crumble under the great pressure created by high expectations and roarings of enthusiastic fans. He weathered the storm though, proving himself worthy of all the praises. I would really love to see this young man clash with Djokovic or Nadal in the ensuing matches. Might go down in history as one of the classic matches as well.

he is pretty much the only type of player that can hurt Carlos game. consistent, running a lot, lefty! Carlos seemed to have issues returning the lefty serve and also playing stops is not that easy on a different spin.

wow this match felt like a quarter-finals/finals 🤯
Alcaraz was struggling with consistency for the bigger part of the match. He was far from his best in the attacking game, even the drop shot didn't work as good as usually. It was frustrating to watch at times, but he made it all up with some crazy defence. He also played very solid at the net, it's great how he moves forward to finish the point at every opportunity and he is not afraid to do it even on the big points. It reminded me of the Barcelona semifinal against De Minaur, where he also didn't play his best tennis but somehow found the way. This was similar but bigger, and it's a good grand slam lesson for him. It's also another proof of his bullish mentality, that never lets him give up and force him to make winners out of balls most other players wouldn't even run to. Credit to Ramos Vinolas, who made a great effort. I really felt sorry for him at the end of the match, but it would be too bad if Alcaraz lost like that in the second round. If he was more effective at taking his chances, it might have been a straight sets win with no drama. He was 8 out of 31 at breakball conversion, while Ramos Vinolas took 6 out of 7. That's a lot of wasted chances against a guy who is not the best server in the world. But sometimes there are matches like that and it's better when it happens in the second round than in the second week. I think it was just a bad day in the office and he will be back stronger in the next match. There is some revenge to get against Korda.

He looked like he was doubting himself and played really safe mos of he time. His inside out forehand didn't work, his slices weren't good enough. Really hope he can get back on track next match
@@robmarth2226 It's a strange thing to happen after such a strong start in the first set, but for some reason he got tight. But it surely was a great match for viewers who like some drama :) Hopefully he won't repeat that until semifinal.

Ramos-Vinolas played some great tennis: offense, engagement, power, precision, strategy, everything was there. It was all vein today. Today, he met a rising champ, the future of tennis, still a bit shy, still struggling a bit to find his pace, but with an enormous hunger and an infinite amount of talent. It wasn't Alcaraz best match, he struggled a lot ! But he managed to show a superb style and a fine resilience. Bravo to both of them ! So excited to witness the rise of a future big name of tennis hopefully. Wether he stays on top or swim around top30, he will always be interesting to watch. I don't care about the naysayers who shout that he is a one time wonder, he's there to stay ! I hope he'll go far this FO, so exciting to watch ! Vamos Carlito !
Carlos Alcaraz had won their two previous matches when his ranking was lower than Ramos'. In this match Carlitos came as a clear favourite but Ramos came out with a very good strategy. Ramos played a lot to Carlitos's backhand and made few mistakes. Moreover Albert was much better at converting his breaking point opportunities. Also the court was slow today and that probably benefited Albert Ramos. Once again Carlitos won a very difficult match.
The were also a lot of mistakes by Alcaraz, even the dropshots were off, he clearly had a bad day of tennis form. But his mental and physical aspect, wow...
Yeah, Alcaraz wasn't playing his best, but Ramos had a kickass game plan

This is the kind of match Carlos needed to experience. Sure, Ramos-Vinolas is distinctly second-tier, but the long grind, losing a close set, and being down in the match are definitely going to help him grow and prepare him for an exhausting match against someone closer in level to him.

What a match. Both played great. Was interesting to watch Carlos having doubts and then bringing back together at the last half of 5th set was amazing. Big learning curve for him .
That point when he took the fourth set that was unbelievable. And that 5th set.i mean wow he has the attributes to be one of the greats.

Foot speed is so valuable in tennis, especially on clay, and Carlos uses it optimally. Also the timing on his approaches are impeccable.

Albert. So nearly won this. But after seeing CA make so many Errors and DF its hats off to him for not giving up , he held on simply wouldn’t let go. And for me thats says a lot about who he is as a tennis player. He’s only getting warmed up its been a while since we saw a tennis player show signs and consistently show up and win. Alcaraz is a player who looks almost invincible in the highlight reel- has the most complete game currently: Volleys like Rafter, attacks like Federer, raw power and tenacity of Rafa and the baseline game of Djokovic i.e strong on both wings. But, tennis is not only about how complete your game is, or how spectacular your shots are. It's more about shot selection and point to point intensity. I watched the entire 4:30 hr match. And Alcaraz seemed very vulnerable at certain moments. If only Ramos had taken more risk and had a little more power in his shots, it would have been curtains for the teen sensation. He played tactically brilliantly, but just fell short. It's a pity Nole-Rafa are potentially meeting in the QF. They are going to exhaust each other and (potentially) Alcaraz will be the favorite in the semis. A Djokovic or a Nadal today, against Alcaraz would have a straight set beat down in favor of either of the veterans.
I see what you’re saying but Ramos vinolas was playing some insane tennis too, he took the teen by surprise by his aggression at times. Alcaraz was not playing his best game even though in moments it looked like he was. I’ve been tracking his game quite intently and if he was playing Nole or Rafa it would have been a completely different match. Don’t think it would be straight sets as he (Alcaraz) would have had a completely different approach
Alcaraz is still developing - you can't really compare veterans to him. You'd have to compare Nadal and Djokovic at a similar stage of their careers to him. Also in sport you only beat what's in front of you - I don't like hypothetical 'if this person was blah blah...then they would beat the other one' kind of dialogue. The fact remains Alcaraz is an extraordinary talent (I've followed him for a long time now) and he will only improve from here despite your attempts to do him down. He beat Nadal and Djokovic the other week anyway - those two should just retire gracefully like previous generations of players but their egos won't let them.

Well, Alcaraz beat Rafa on red clay (in Madrid no less) just about a month ago, so it would NOT be a beat down...not in the slightest.

That final set from Alcaraz was truly unbelievable. Even though he didn’t play his best for much of that much, he’s proved to himself that he can still play his best at the end of a 5 set match. I hope this gives him confidence going forward

I have never NEVER seen movement like that. Better than Hewitt, Rafa, Joker, Murry, Borg. Those impossible retrieves broke the opponents heart and mind.

Honestly, (I know I am going to get a lot of hate for this) but I believe Ramos Vinolas should have won. He had multiple match points, yet he could not convert them because of his nerves. Alcaraz is an amazing player, but he has yet to improve and this is his first Roland Garros. Granted, he was not playing his best, but Vinolas was clearly outplaying him here. He deserved to win just as much as Alcaraz, if not more. However, I would like to congratulate Alcaraz on his comeback. Spectacular match.
No one's going to hate you for saying so. I'm not sure ARV failed to convert; more like Alcaraz didn't let him. I remember Federer once saying something like, "I like winning more than not losing." That's actually an important distinction that Alcaraz already understands :)

Feel so sorry that Albert Ramos-Vinolas can't just close the game. He was 1' to win but fall in front of the finish line.
True, but Alcaraz fell in front of too many break opportunities in all 5 sets and even at the matchpoint he had better total points score than Ramos Vinolas. So one can argue if it would be fair if Albert’s matchpoint was converted. Tennis scoring system is so tricky, but in the end the only thing that matters is who can really get it done, being one point away is not enough.
@JW it's tennis my friend, Lorenzo musetti was 2 sets up and couldn't close out the match. Tsitsipas came back and won it in 5 sets.

@@alvinsluis805 I don't share this opinion, the youngsters are actually starting to make the era more interesting. Musetti and Baez lost their 2:0 lead against guys with much more grand slam experience. They will surely be more successful as they gain the experience and confidence in best of 5 matches. They also need to go up the ranking so they don't face the strongest players in the first rounds. Other promising young players are Rune, Korda, Brooksby, Draper and of course Sinner and Alcaraz who are already up there with the best despite not having too much experience from the slams. I think all these young guns have the potential to grow into top players and the post Big 3 era will be very interesting.
