Nice turning. Some minimal commentary would really benefit many watchers. What tool, speed, what you are looking out for, what to do, what not to do. Sanding.......finish with beeswax and heat. All in all, an ok video.

I have never seen beeswax melted onto wood before. I'll be trying this. I'd need to get making the basket of eggs my wife asked for 2 years ago, no excuses now. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Actually it is mixture of tung oil (140g), beeswax (60g) and carnauba wax (35g). Full cake 235g. It is quite oily first, but it will dry in few days :)

Heating it also expands the air in the wood pores. Then, as it cools, it literally sucks the wax (or oil) into the pores. Helps maximize chatoyancy.

You are quite right, you do not need expensive turning tools to turn, at least for smallsh work. But a gouge (carpenter's gouge is what I use) works just as well aas their expensive cousins with fancy grinds. I have turned many a tool handle with nothing more than a foot-powerd springpole lathe. Good exercise, too. A skew chisel is useful for fine work and you can grind one yourself if you get an attack of turnitis -- the desperate need to turn something :) Very nice finish on that Easter THingy.

Tools used? I know the spindle roughing gouge is first, not quite sure what kind of skew follows

Tool used: not in the video order, but used during this video… From Crown tools 19mm Pro-PM roughing gouge, 19mm Pro-PM skew chisel and 10mm Pro-PM spindle gouge. From Robert Sorby 13mm oval skew chisel and 3mm standart parting tool. Both skew chisels have slighly curved cutting edge.

+Donald Fugitt It's only water. Turning tools might leave some press marks, but water puffs them up.

Hi Dunnari, EGGcellent. A Cracking job well done. Over the years I've bred all sorts or Bird, from as small as Budgies to Geese, European Eagle Owls. So I've seen a few egg's along the way, theres slight variations from species to another species egg. But your eggs are spot on for the average shape! From watching a few of your video's I have noticed that you like egg's to, you have a natural ease with the tools and lathe. How many years have you been turning? Lathe is Record CL 4 and for workpiece holding I use Vicmarc 4-jaw chuck.

The first step, mounting the square block in the chuck seemed risky, but I thought I'd try. The block nearly hit me in the head when it came off. So I tried again, trying to tighten it better. Still flew off. Any tips to make this work? thanks

Hmmm, few things come in to my mind. You can use the tailstock to support the other end and you also need very sharp tools. And don't use too long workpieces. Do you use cutting or scraping tools?

This may be a silly question, but does a higher number sand paper mean a shinier and more detailed finish?

If the wood is very hard and solid, then yes. With softer woods the limit is about 400 grit, after that you don't get more shinier finish, even how hard you try. I usually finish my turnings with Mirka Mirlon (very fine) grit is about 360.
