*Fun facts about Forged in Fire* 1. The meat is donated to a wolf 🐺 sanctuary 2. The losers only "surrender" their weapons for the show; they get to keep them. 3. The show pays for air travel and boarding, so less experienced smiths can afford to compete.

actually they surrender weapons to the set because of some law thus making it a prop and some law prevents the travel of the weapon and by labeling it as a prop they can transport the weapon to the studio
@@vodkacola5182 nope, in the Japanese ono episode, the losing smith commented on the video and he has the ono for sale on his website. Production only holds on to the weapons until broadcast.

There's a reason why blacksmiths were shown respect even by nobles back in the medieval era. Their craft was a demanding one that required a great deal of experience, skill, and a drive to keep getting better. In a way, a Knight's "best friend" wasn't his brothers-in-arms or his weapon, it was his blacksmith, as without that blacksmith, he wouldn't even have a weapon to fight with in the first place. Blacksmiths need skill, patience, and experience....but they also need a great deal of physical brawn as well (especially in the medieval era, where the conveniences of modern machinery to help in the craft did not exist), as they would have to manually hammer the metal (or whatever other material they were working) into shape. Back then, you certainly would not want to get into a brawl with a blacksmith, they could likely hit you with strength comparable to a sledgehammer if the need arose.
@@gamester512 The fact that I never kill blacksmiths in Dark Souls, even on evil playthroughs, is a nod to that.
I collect blades. Knives and swords and all in-between. This show has made me appreciate them the way they should be and not as just some cool weapon.

nope the blade was just not sharp enough that it bounced off animal skin, curved downwards and bent itself. Epic fail that a claymore cant cut effectively leather.

The pommel is a very vital part of the overall weapon though. Holds the entire hilt together. That falls off, and the entire sword can and will fall apart pretty quick
For real, he lost to the derpiest sword possible... He made a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and lost to the guy whose strategy was "they asked for a sword so I made a sword-shaped hammer".
I was actually wondering, aren't most pummels screwed into the grip? How did it even come off?
@@Kusabiii He might have tried to glue it on cheaply or something when he should have tacked it with a good weld or at least stronger bond. Definitely some oversight for the all around test of the entire structure..
@@Kusabiii most pommels would be peened on, which means that the tang sticks through the pommel a small distance, and then it is hammered into flatness. This stops the pommel from ever breaking off but means that you can't ever remove it.
one person makes an arguably worse sword, the other's pommel popped off. "Hey you with the much more accurate representation of what this sword should be, you lose"

@Lord Sakazuki I've only found forged in fire during the last couple of months during lockdown, so this is the first time I've personally heard it. And I must say I am loving this show, and it doesn't matter when people start the show, as long as they enjoy the show that's what important, so I think "fake fans" is a bit much to say, people start shows at different times so people find out these things at different times

A catastrophic failure is when the blade is no longer safe to use. Without a pommel, the sword could possibly go flying across the room
@@tunners its a failure but not catastrophic failure. Blade could still be used and all you'd have to do is re-attach the pommel and add some stuff to make it not fall off again. Also if I can swing a sledge hammer as hard as possible on to an extremely hard surface without losing my grip the sword flying across the room probably wouldn't happen by people who know what they're doing with it. Now if the handle itself was falling apart/off I could see that being a catastrophic failure
Generally I do not believe that the people in the show want to take chances to try and fix the weapon or keep testing. It would be 1. Against the rules as you can’t change it or make sure it’s safe and strong at all after the deadline is done. And 2. The judges are not allowed to fix the weapon at all, only allowed to test the weapon.

its not really full, it has lots of empty space, could fill 100 people in their to be considered full
I wish the testing was more controlled. So that each blade had the same amount of stress applied. That said, respect to everyone taking part of this program. Great to see so many dedicated and skilled people in one place.

I'd rather talk about how many of them but especially this one have no idea how to properly use the tools they are stress testing thus resulting in far more failures and more dramatic failures then should ever have happened in the course of the testing..

judge have enough experience to know if blade have any big mistake, weapon have any obvious problem will not be test. We only see the weapon which don't have seen problem fail in the test

That's usually what those blades back in the day were forged for so if it won't kill then it's pretty much useless.
That first claymore bending wasn't entirely the contestant's fault... The guy performing the cut test against the pig just had poor edge alignment.
Why don't you head down to the FIF studios and tell Doug he doesn't know what he's doing.
@@boosterprime5757 You can pause the video and go frame by frame with the , + . keys, you can clearly see the blade is nowhere near aligned when it hits the pig. Even the very best make mistakes sometimes... 👍

Honestly the strength test at 23:00 is just crazy

They have forge real weapons, not a decorative replicas. So on battefield this weapons have to kill man wearing chain mail, few seconds later using same weapon you have kill man in plate armor, seconds later you have chop shield and kill man. After few hours later when battle is over your weapon have to be still exist in one piece.

If knife survive in one pieces few hits hammer an industrial nut, propably it willbe survive cuting the wood, spliting, batoning, choping meat and willbe sharp ebnought yo cut paracord. You wana knife made from tin from the can or real knife? You ever hear about crash test the cars, qualitative tests of lots of products? You take random item from random banch and you tasted it what strenght its need for destroyed it. If it willbe more than some number its good, if it willbe crash on below minimum number whole part should be withdrawn, melted and make again.
Edge alignment is crucial when slashing, expecially with straight swords, with which is more difficult to do so. Total respect for the judges but I've seen a lot of bludgeoning and not so much slashing.
I was hoping to see this comment... Didn't notice it as much later, but that first segment really hurt my soul. I didn't want to believe it so I played it back slower and sure enough he swung it really hard with a really bad angle to bend it like that.

@@diegopagani6549 I mean to be fair if they made perfect edge alignment most blades would cut through anything short of steel as long as they are even semi-sharpened so it kinda makes sense that you wouldn't give it perfect edge alignment, the problem for me is that it's practically impossible to replicate the attack so for "sharpness" / "kill tests" as long as the blades are close whoever gets a luckier swing wins it.
The man using the baton intentionally shattered a blade at 22:55, I watched the first one and he smacked above the nut all 3 times. The second blade he tested, he struck WAY past the spot the blade was making contact, and put way more pressure further up the blade and snapped it.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who realized that. Yeah the guy definitely hit it in the wrong place.
I wouldn't go as far to say he did it on purpose but yeah, not exactly a controlled test.

The first winner says: congratulations, after his blade bend......5 minutes later he wins, because the other guy messed up even more.
My favorite part about that is when the other guy said "my blade may have broken but at least it cut. I got this in the bag". And despite saying that he still lost XD.
I think that guy was the worst loser on the show, but even then he wasn't that bad lol
I mean both shiuld have been disqualified. Yes you can straighten up a bent blade, but if it bends during battle you dont really have the time, a broken blade is as bad so for all i care they both failed.

It always saddens me to see a weapon break on this show, Considering the amount of effort that is put on each weapon.
And most of these smiths do put in time and passion into what they made

Being commonly used by soldiers on the location knows as “Shipment”, where they’d appear out of nowhere and rush the enemy who, without having enough time to react or to just realize how ridiculous the situation they find themselves in is, is killed mercilessly, only to respawn and go through the same events multiple times.
They tried to do that with me, but I'm one of those anti campers, anyone who camps, gets bayoneted.

it's nice to see a competition like this where, forget about good sportsmanship, each craftsman admires the others craft, and respects it. it's refreshing to see.
I think only blacksmiths will show that kind of appreciation. Hard not to, making a claymore's some serious work, how can you not show admiration? :D
Wow, with the claymore double failures I actually disagree with the outcome for the first time in the show. BOTH failed really badly. I really think the 10k should be split. 5k easy.

The Scottish claymore episode, he angled it a bit to the spine of the sword. (BTW, the middle of the sword is also called "spine" if I recalled correctly)(Also please don't blast me if I get it wrong!) This is evident by the second cut with the second claymore which is not his fault as that type of sword is heavy to swing with one hand. It is approximately 2.5 - 3 kg. Normal one handed swords tend to be 1-1.5 kg so close to double the weight with your wrists will be a complete disaster for your wrist. Your shoulders and back can carry more so u can put it on your back.
Maybe doug shouldn't have slapped the pig with the sword.

The sportsmanship in this show is amazing. You never see this kind of enthusiasm and support anywhere else between competitors.

I love how the competitors are almost always supportive of each other. And when another competitor's blade breaks, they all look devastated by it. I don't remember I've ever seen anyone upfrontly happy and wishing anyone else's blade would break so they would win. (Except for that one guy who is also in this vid but lost.) Especially the one with Will and Bobby. When Will's blade broke, Bobby looks like it was his own that broke.
Makes sense. Any experienced smith is no stranger to the heartbreak of a broken blade.
@@anonymouslee2083 Plus, they know how much time and effort goes into constructing those weapons, and by extension, they know how they would feel had it been their own weapon that broke/failed.
As fellow smiths i know they know full well how it feels for your own blade to break.
That US marine corps sword just shows how much that guy loves to KEEL! :D
In the camping knife testing (starts around 20:50) the second contestant got robbed by the guy doing the strength testing. The first knife was struck three times on the spine of the knife close to where the knife made contact with the nut or closer to the handle. On the second knife, the third, and catastrophic blow, was delivered closer to the tip of the knife where it was unsupported by the nut. I'm not sure how many knives would have survived that type if hit.
When Doug had two Claymores malfunction back to back, the look on his face was priceless. He looked like he had been robbed of his fun! 1:46 and 2:47

@@falconfightteampresents5992 well on the first sword the handle was too rounded and therefore rotated in the grip and causing a poor edge alignment. The second sword had good edge alignment, but it broke on the spine, which means the sword was made bad

Well its not a catastrophic failure. It did not seem that the pomel had any part in the structural integrety. It wont be as balanced as befor but well his oponents wasent balanced from the start

Without the pommel, the sword is no longer weildable because of balance issues. More dangerous to user than the target
That pommel cold be mended in seconds, and it would have been the winning sword. It still had the taper and all. Just put a bit of epoxy or glue on it.

Know that some of these weapons are really unusual(not something typical that a blade/sword maker makes) so they can relate to the pain that can go into building something of that nature. I agree with you as much as the next person, but sadly it was a failure due to the overall structure of the blade's design. The other blade still had its integrity and was still functional even with its weight as a drawback, but the pommel was the counterbalance to the losing blades key structural balance. The blade was deemed too dangerous to use after that. The hosts understood and were saddened that he had lost to the other blade which seemed to be leading to failure, but things happen.

I know it’s a joke but I think it’s a recreation of how the blade broken part flew of and landed
I’m actually pretty sure it is a recreation of what happened when the blade broke. There have been a couple of times where I can see the way the fragment fell the first time doesn’t quite match up to the second close up shot.
Am i judging wrong for seeing it like this at 22:53 where it seems to be a failure,but the person hitting the blade hit it slightly out of the line from where the knife was placed on the bolt It just looks like he hit it a bit further away from the handle,and that caused the blade to fly off,but otherwise it held up nicely when he hit it directly ontop of the bolt

Whats funny about the first test is Doug hit the pig with the flat of the blade. He didn't hit it with the edge. I believe some of these tests are flawed because the wielder is not that familiar with the weapon. I'm not saying Doug or the others aren't proficient but when you test so many different styles of weapons you can't be familiar with all of them. Just my .02 cents. It shouldn't have bent anyway, but when it was tested for sharpness it was fine.
Yeah, you can see in the slow-motion replay that the cut was badly aligned, leading to the weapon slapping the carcass, rather than cutting it. I feel like if they used a diagonal cut, rather than a horizontal cut, it would improve the testing since, as it stands, those "baseball bat" swings they use are absolutely destroying perfectly good work.
I bet No one noticed Dave was even wearing a Scottish Kilt in the Scottish Blade Test. He was so looking forward to this weapon.

I really like this show. Smithing is something I've always wanted to do. This compilation is really well done. It doesn't just show the failures it shows a bit of what leads up to them and what happens after.

Pommels are mostly so that your weapon doesn’t slip out of your hand as easily. it has something to catch onto so that it doesn’t fall out, there is also the issue of balance, mostly so that the weapon isn’t forward heavy, so I get your point
The strength testing by bashing them on steel nuts. The goal was to break them right ? I can't imagine many blades surviving that.
One did, I think its just to like, seperate the strength of the actual blade, make sure its not brittle or has any micro cracks- I think literally only a perfectly forged nlade would surivive with no damage
Even then it'll still take some blade issues. Especially the edge, no matter the steel quality.
If it was used as a test on this show chances are you shouldn't do this to a real knife. Blacksmiths tend to make almost unbreakable stuff (mailbox out of 1/4 inch steel, it was never vandalized again.) So you need an absurd test to test their breaking point.
@@axoltol5363 If they knew the tests being conducted they would design around it. Some guys get unfair advantages because of a random specific trait they went with based purely on preference. Someone else chooses to make a more flexible blade for whatever reason it will perform better/ worse then a rigid blade in whatever random test. Most of their tests are stupid and not practical, it's often not a measure of skill. It's mostly who designed and forged something better suited to a random destruction test.

I love the sportsmanship in this show. The losers always seem to take it pretty well and the winners don't boast in anyone's face
Most of them are using this as advertising for a bladesmithing business, even the ones that fail in a major way can be "Here's what I can do with three hours, I want eight to make yours. And, of course, the finalists can point to a lot more. They do not want what they intend to use as promotional to show them in a bad light. Plus, of course, they just found out how hard it is to make a winning blade under those time pressures.
