Watch These Actors Get Their Prosthetics Put On For Movies And TV Shows
Subscribe: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Things
In this video we dive into the uncomfortable, painstaking, and sometimes dangerous makeup prosthetics that actors and actresses have had to deal with. This list of fifteen actors addresses everything from the amount of time it took to get the actors into their makeup looks to the hard, painful realities that some actors had to face when dealing with makeup mishaps. The biggest factor in an uncomfortable makeup and prosthetic application process has got to be the amount of time it takes to transform these actors into their characters. Makeup application time can run from two to ten hours of sitting and waiting for their makeup transformations. The list of actors who had to deal with these challenging circumstances include Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Anya Chalotra, John Rhys-Davies, Jacob Tremblay, Karen Gillan, Ryan Reynolds, Kae Alexander, Halle Berry, Naomi Grossman, Vladimír Furdík, Paul Bettany, and Jim Carrey. All of these actors faced challenges when it came to their makeup applications and their use of prosthetics. From allergic reactions, to long hours waiting to have their makeup completed, to uncomfortable acting conditions, each of these stars dealt with the hardships that come along with the hair and makeup department in Hollywood. Realizing just how much their on-screen makeovers affected them makes it just that much more impressive that all of these actors were able to deliver such great performances. So think twice before you judge their work; it might have been a lot harder than you think!

    • MUA's have to set everything up beforehand so they're often on set way before the acting crew. And they have very bulky kits they have to lug around, on top of that they have to keep everything sanitary and clean. And for prosthetics, they have to sculpt/dye/paint/lay down hair/and then they have to make dozens of duplicates of the exact same prosthetic and make sure every single copy is an EXACT replica. And in order to do prosthetics, they have to make a casting of the body-part that is getting the prosthesis so it fits correctly. Loads of trials and errors and trial runs with the actors/actresses to get everything perfect and good to go for the actual shooting. Theres a lot involved in SFX MUA work lol. They even have to make multiple copies of props, teeth, and various other things.

I appreciate all makeup artists of people who have had to sit in the makeup chair immensely.

  • As a makeup artist, an avid makeup wearer and film geek. I can say that prosthetics can be extremely uncomfortable and irritating but as a makeup artist I understand the other side that it’s a living art form and even though so much effort goes into it with actors we as artist want it to be just as good and believable as they do. I do think in some circumstances adjustments and accommodations to actors should be made to make sure they are as comfortable as possible.

It does not feel right to me to take a ablebodied actor and just put prosthetics on him to make him look like the has a genetic disorder/ disability. There are people, kids out there who can‘t put down any prosthetics and really look like this.
