  • You understand the training of young puppies so well. I’ve seen so many ppl that expect a puppy to be like a young child or understand what the words coming out of there mouth mean. I have a 100 pound pit bull and he is so sweet. It took daily walks multiple times and daily training if I had a job at the time it wouldn’t be able to be done as well. The best asset I was able to use was the doggie day care allowed him to come in a couple times a week for 20 dollars a day. They didn’t allow dogs that weren’t fixed had certain vaccinations they get when they were older I think it was a year old . However they made an exception and implemented a puppy daycare program because of him they absolutely adored him. He would play with the big dogs and get tossed around like a rag doll and he loved it. Those big dogs taught him so much. He’s turned out to be the best friend

  • We can’t get anywhere near his collar without him biting our hands or sleeves. Even giving him a treat is impossible to do without him biting our fingers. He is CONSTANTLY biting us, anytime we get out hands anywhere near his head, collar or body. It does not matter how much tug of war, or playing we do beforehand to tire him out. We could play tug or fetch for 30 minutes, or go for an hour walk, and he is still biting afterwards.

    • I hope this helps but I'll hold a treat in my hand where the treat is barely exposed. My dog will try to get it and usually bite a little. I will reward them with the treat when they try to take it nicely. They learn the difference between my flesh and their food. I'll tell them "Nice" and show them the barely exposed food and they will start taking it with caution instead of biting.

  • When you said that tire your puppy out when you want them to lay with you and cuddle, would you on the couch? I don’t have to do that. All I have to do is call my dogs name and say cuddle time and she knows that playtime is over and automatically settles down I just needed to know how to get her to stop biting when we’re playing tug-of-war because she would always grab my hands and bite my hands and I would say ouch and she’d get all sad and run away and think that she hurt me really bad and I thought that saying ouch would like tell her hey you hurt me let’s try this again, but you showing me how to play with her and like take it away and grab her collar and for her to think that if she accidentally bites me while we’re playing to take the toy away and she’ll realize OK play times over and when I give it back to her, she knows to correct that behavior and try not to bite. You really helped me. Thank you.

She is a biter... I actually do bring my hands away from her and tell her "No bites" in a firm voice and make myself as uninteresting as possible... this actually seems to have made her bite a lot less! But she doesn't do the same with my kids as they don't know how to not move fast away from her bites... So leash training will begin ASAP as to help with her issues... • You don’t have to keep giving treats: puppies will respond very positively to praise, as in ‘Good boy!’ As this rate, you’ll go through bags and bags and bags of treats.

  • I noticed that you are down on the floor with the puppy. But, when I’m on the floor, it’s a main place that the puppy wants to jump all over me and also puppy-bites. So, I either have to stand to play tug or I sit in the chair and play or I throw it and then she goes and brings it, drops (on command) and I give treat. But, I WISH I could be on the floor and play more gently =(

    • Also, I want to add that try to get the energy out before going on the floor. But, sometimes playing tug and other stuff actually seems to make the puppy more apt to jump and bite

  • My lab still nips when tired and he's 8 months. Usually when in "witching hour" or when he's frustrated. I feel I'm failing somehow although some days are better than others.

    • @@McCannDogs I have watched it, thank you. I needed to tighten collar a bit but that dog was better. ; ) When mine wants attention and being ignored, sometimes I'm on phone or paying a bill, he will also nip like "look at me". Not always but even a few times a week can be taxing. Thanks again

  • Not only does my pup not seem to enjoy any of his toys I feel like I have to force him to play. Then he just bites and I follow her steps with the rope. Not interested at all, doesnt even bite the rope lol its so weird. just bites me or goes and bites something else. He just wants to bite the line the entire time also. Very sad at the moment because I cant even begin enjoying any other steps with him. Just lost right now

  • Wondering if anyone can help, we're at 8 months and our dashund puppy is still biting badly. We've tried the collar interrupt with praise when calm for months now and it seems like he just doesn't get it. He still bites at us and it seems to be a game for him because he comes back for more. Any tips?

    • Ditto! My 7month old Tibetian Terrior thinks that biting and nipping at me is a great game. If I am sitting on my bed and she joins me and then starts nipping me, I pick her up and put her down on the floor. Had to do that a few times before she figured it out! Will see if the collar and house line grab will be of any help!

  • So the focus here seems to be on redirecting the puppy or avoiding biting altogether - is there no concern of not developing proper bite inhibition if the puppy isn't able to bite and receive feedback ("Ouch!") to learn they have to be more gentle with their mouth?
