What many people don’t realize is that sugar was rationed during the First World War, so Turkish Delight truly was a rare treat to have at the time.
Dude I couldn’t imagine being young and not having access to any sweets I hate to say but I’d probably betray family for some sugar
@@coffie_herethey still rationed sugar during ww2.
I was thinking the exact same thing- that during the war the odds of having anything with more than even a very small amount of sugar was very low. That’s why so many recipes from back then call for raisins, or other dried fruits, to substitute sugar.
Also probably an emotional thing he associated with having it before the war and his father was still home

I'm from Pakistan and my grandfather had Turkish guests that he had to assist. My grandfather got them a lot of traditional Pakistani stuff and the Turkish guests brought us two boxes of Turkish delight. Each box was a different flavor, one was a grape jelly with dried roses and a pistachio inside and I can't tell what the jelly of the other one is but the outer coating is coconut and also has a pistachio inside
It taste really sweet and it feels like dough and the texture is like dough in lots of sugar!

As a Turk, I can say the original turkish delight is rose flavored that's why it's pink. It was done hundreds of years ago by crushing rose petals to use the juice in flavoring this dessert as well as many other things in our cuisine. Never heard of vanilla or orange flavored ones. Also we don't eat it frequently. Usually we eat it during special days and holidays during which we have big family gatherings or guests so we usually serve it in a small cup along with turkish coffee to our guests. If the coffee does not involve sugar in it (some people want sugar some don't), then you can eat it while drinking the coffee which balances the taste. Otherwise the dessert itself can be very sugary, at least for me.
Orange blossom doesnt taste like orange it's similar to rose water I know this because we make them in north africa too. (Because of ottoman empire)
Am I the only one who read this comment with an accents. ? Lol
Would you please let me know the recipe? The original one I mean ♥️
