Same! Way more realistic!
The choreography was bad though. Cameron diaz was the original choice to play sonya but she pulled out with an injury and hence Bridget Wilson stepped in. However because she had no fight screen experience it looked bad
Yes very bad techniques on the punches, telegraphed kicks, no Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo experience. But Bridgette Wilson looked hot as hell though.
It's the gutterral yells and satisfying sounds when she connects!
@@Lunareste Yeah, you could see and feel her satisfaction with every hit she got on Kano, and feel her pain when she got backhanded across the face and kicked in the stomach while she was down. Her fighting technique is bad, but this was never going to be a technical fight of any kind. This was a street fight through and through, doing whatever you need to do to win. I'm a bit surprised they didn't have anybody throw sand in the eyes of their opponent.
I saw mortal kombat at the movie theater with my dad, I was a kid and I remember that I loved it... oh man, I'm getting old.

yeah he was def drunk lol
actually kano could've killed sonya, but shang tsung told him not to kill her. he coudl've killed her when she got stunned by his kick. alas he gave her some time to recover by spitting and saying give up.
.
That's because earlier in the film, Shang Tsung told Kano. "Remember. She's not to be harmed only humiliated. I have plans for my sweet Sonya" Shang wanted her alive. Kano was promised money by Shang not to harm Sonya. Also, Kano in film said that he believed in a fare fight "One on one, hand to hand, man to man" Him bringing a knife into this fight was not in his character. Notice how he never tried to pick up the knife at any point in this fight.

Plus, Sonya was supposed to have one more fight in the movie's script against Jade(one of Shang Tsung's bodyguards) after Art Lean's funeral. She almost loses that fight and is wrecked until she is reminded by Raiden that she shouldn't be scared to ask for help. Sonya rallies to beat Jade.
@@ladyfire44 I've never heard of that, sounds interesting. Where did you hear this?
IMDB and Wikipedia. There were some scenes in the script that were supposed to be in the movie that were never shown. 1. Johnny Cage finally escaping Scorpion's lair to face a nub waiting for him before Liu Kang's fight with Kitana. He naturally wins that fight. 2. Reptile originally had no involvement in the first movie and was omitted. Possibly, Anderson was trying to save him for the 2nd movie. 3. Shang Tsung giving the Earth Warriors time to mourn Art Lean and give him a funeral in the Garden of Statues. Kitana secretly attends it and she shows sympathy for them because it is similar to how she lost her parents in Outworld during Shao Kahn's invasion. Art is buried under the statue of the Great Kung Lao(Liu's ancestor). It's from there, he, Cage and Sonya finally understands what's at stake for Earth. 4. After Art Lean's funeral, Sonya is confronted by a kimono clad Jade(whom is one of Shang Tsung's bodyguards) and their fight begins. Unlike her fight with Kano, it proved to be much harder for her. Despite being dressed in a kimono, Jade's fighting skills are superior due to her early training in Outworld. Sonya is wrecked and almost loses that fight until she is reminded by Raiden's words. This helps her rally and beat Jade. 5. Liu Kang was originally going to fight Sub Zero(still under Shang Tsung's influence) in Outworld after he narrowly escapes his death. It was switched after the negative reaction from the test audiences. Sub Zero was given an early death and Reptile fights Liu Kang in Outworld.
After seeing the new movie, I understand why Kano doesn't use his laser eye in combat. The VFX artists couldn't animate an amazing laser (with the exception of the Death Star).
Actually he wasn't yet known to have an eye laser. None of his moves or fatalities used it until Mortal Kombat 3, right after this movie came out, so we thought it was just a fancy bionic eye.

@@dieterrosswag933 well, I mean Mortal Kombat as a franchise is based on a mash up of Big Trouble in Little China, JCVD movies, Enter the Dragon and Sword and Sorcery/Frank Frazetta artwork, so it's definitely always been far more based on Western media than any authentic representation of Asian culture. I think Kano is more interesting and charismatic as a cockney/Australian than he was in his original design but a big part of that is probably down to the limitations of videogames compared to film; as you could barely make out the original actor's face in any detail, especially with the mask.
@@dieterrosswag933 even given that the actual story isn't great and the characters are inconsistent I think MK is one of the most distinctive fantasy settings out there. There's not really anything like it that has been nearly as well developed (admittedly we're comparing it to Way of the Warrior and Tattoo Assassins). It's a bit like the Warhammer 40K of fighting games in that it's just a bunch of random stuff smashed together but it's so ridiculous that it ends up being fairly compelling as a setting (the main difference being that Games Workshop commissions novels from people who specialise in writing stories to order and MK is very much the product of a fairly limited number of people who also have other priorities to address.).

I remember when I first watched this movie that I got all frustrated by Sonya not being played by Cynthia Rothrock or someone more convincing, but Bridgette Wilson made it work because she was into it 100%, I've read she was a replacement flown in to shoot Mortal Kombat the same day she wrapped up another movie and didn't have much time to train, so the fact she still sold the moves as well as she did (I love that they kept when she does a spinning kick and falls over) is a testament to her comitment.
She actually replaced Cameron Diaz who broke her hand in training. The fact that Bridgette Wilson didn't have time to properly train likely lead to her having such little screen fight time which is a shame, especially since they also cut a confrontation between her and Jade from the movie too.
