Scientists have identified what they have suspected was probably the largest marine reptile ever to swim in the seas - a creature longer than two, nose-to-nose buses.
The creature lived around 202 million years ago alongside the dinosaurs.
Its fossilised jawbone was found in 2016 by a fossil hunter on a beach in Somerset, UK.
In 2020 a father and daughter found another similar jawbone.

Until we find more material, the blue whale remains the largest animal ever known, and to assume anything different would be jumping to conclusions. This title is rather misleading.
Yes but bbc needs dem views and only the biggest boi is what sells. This is why you never got promoted, jerry.
Now we know the BBC are blue whale haters.
@@andrereloaded1425 So racist
Free Willy!
I agree that it is misleading and sensationalist, but online the length varies greatly, from 21-24 meters for blue whales, to 29 or 32m as the confirmed maximum length. The ichtyosaurus here has a length of 25m so it is at least an equal to a blue whale, but yes, just assuming it "could" be longer is ridiculous. Most ichtyos are dolphin sized, this is the first outlier and definitely not the norm.
Please change title
Why?
@@Heat_Wave2024have ever heard the animal called blue whale?
@@eduardosupo8027 yes. Did you hear the News report? It's said this newly found creature is estimated to be larger than Blue whales .
@eduardosupo8027 did you watch the video? Says it's thought to be known to be bigger than the blue whale in this video
@@LocozillaYT Obivously They don't watch 😁. They are lazy
A teenager and her father found this fossil

Blue whale is larger. Incorrect title
They say in the video that it MAY have been larger than the The Blue Whale. But if you have been back in time and measured it, then please let us know. ;)
@@MiniBuster2 😂😂😂
What do you expect from British people funded TV channel bunch of egoistic idiots
@@MiniBuster2 What's really sad is that not only did they see the exact same information as you described it yet couldn't even reach the same logical conclusion, but also the fact that 27 other people fell off without noticing it either..... I was about to make the exact point that you made because of the word "MAY" being used etc... Glad to see you pointed it out but it's just crazy how many missed it ... Oh well.... Conclusion.....the fluoride must be working...🤷
Came here just for this 👌
Whilst it's very impressive the title is literally clickbait. Largest ever sea creature? Sea creature isn't a scientific term but it implies largest animal/creature that has been discovered. Then it tells us it's actually the largest reptile sea creature. Which is still great. Cool. Absolutely. But not the biggest thing discovered in the sea is it? Again sea here meaning water in general. God it's clickbaity.
They say it might have been even bigger than the blue whale, thus making it the largest creature ever on Earth.
If they'd used a more appropriate title, everyone would have assumed they were just talking about the other one discovered by Philip Jacobs in 2022 that Attenborough presented a doc about. So definitely left deliberatley vague for clickbait reasons.
Its not clickbait, its actually interesting to listen to science instead of dismissing it as such, people like your selves need to do a little more research instead of flying off silly comments like this.
first time on the internet?
What about this is click bait? The largest blue whale confirmed was 216 tonnes, the Aust colossus(the creature in question), could have been 30 tons heavier.
basically a blue whale that could eat you like a shark... imagine seeing that in real life
Clickbait, low quality misleading cheesy title. Not from you, BBC.
journalism has lost its credibility. i gave up on them.
What is this emotionally ass comment? Can you comment information on why it’s misleading rather than just saying it and crying about it with no proof. Be USEFUL.
Sure! In case you suffer from a psychotic or autistic disorder that makes it complicated for you to understand basic common sense and require further explications, here they are : A: This misleading title doesn't mention that this animal is extinct many million years ago so it plays with the sensationalism of potentially having discovered a new unknown animal. B: it is inaccurate to say that it was a sea creature, it was an amphibian one. But these incorrect oversimplifications attract more viewers and make bbc more money.
Dinosaurs perhaps grew throughout their lives, like crocodiles, eventually their sizes would be terminal. The huge sizes may have been atypical and for most of their lives they were somewhat smaller. It’s a bit like an alien in the future coming to Earth and using a graveyard to conclude that humans had bone problems.
Ichthyosaurus was not a dinosaur
Who cares about the title, they have really old bones from a big thing! People should study more, complain less.
Thank ypu sir for giving us all the opportunity to experience your great find!
Never expected to get clickbaited by bbc
Blue Whale is the largest ever living creature to ever exist
Thanks BBC team for new update. 🙏
Thanks for sharing.
I've rarely heard a Dr with such voice intonation :0!
May have been bigger than a blue whale... May have been smaller than a leedsichthys. Ah click bait title, you got me again.
Largest ever sea reptile perhaps. Incorrect title BBC. Do better.
Very informative.
25 meters in length giant sea creature sommerset beach icthiasaur. Eating squid prob major extinction event
Correction: largest ever marine reptile discovered. The blue whale is larger even if you use the maximum estimates for the size of these animals, which may have gotten LONGER than a Blue Whale, but not as heavy. Also they should have name-dropped the thing, the animal has been given the very creative name ”Ichthyotitan” a portmanteau meaning ”titanic fish lizard”.
Wasn't the Megaladon bigger than a Blue Whale?
Laboon is bigger
Misleading title, change it.
It is not the largest ever sea creature, a blue whale is much larger. It is the largest ever marine reptile!
In Swindon of all places.
Cue the Megaladon shark
Maybe bigger....listen to the narration properly. 🙄
Excellent discovery 😃 well done
This vasuki biggest snake in indian ocean 🌊
And here i thought it was the blue whale as per scientists
Pretty Cool
How did ( only ) the aquatic dinosaurs die and not the rest of the aquatic life which continued in abundance down till today ......... ?
Well first these are not dinosaurs and a vast amount of the aquatic fauna went extinct, not just the aquatic reptiles like ichthyosaurs and mosasaurs to name a few but also shakes, fishes, mollusks etc
why bbc killed it?
The title is not clickbait, it's a straight up lie.
DIDNT ASK+I MAKE BETTER CONTENT😂😂😂🎉

This is saying largest sea reptile not sea creature. Clickbait bullshit

BUDDHA.. “Mendicants, suppose a person with wounded and festering limbs was to enter a thicket of thorny reeds. The kusa thorns would pierce their feet, and the reed leaves would scratch their limbs. And that would cause that person to experience even more pain and distress. In the same way, some mendicant goes to a village or a wilderness and gets scolded, ‘This venerable, acting like this, behaving like this, is a filthy village thorn.’ Understanding that they’re a thorn, they should understand restraint and lack of restraint. And how is someone unrestrained? Take a mendicant who sees a sight with their eyes. If it’s pleasant they hold on to it, but if it’s unpleasant they dislike it. They live with mindfulness of the body unestablished and their heart restricted. And they don’t truly understand the freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom where those arisen bad, unskillful qualities cease without anything left over. When they hear a sound with their ears … When they smell an odor with their nose … When they taste a flavor with their tongue … When they feel a touch with their body … When they know an idea with their mind, if it’s pleasant they hold on to it, but if it’s unpleasant they dislike it. They live with mindfulness of the body unestablished and a limited heart. And they don’t truly understand the freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom where those arisen bad, unskillful qualities cease without anything left over. Suppose a person was to catch six animals, with diverse territories and feeding grounds, and tie them up with a strong rope. They’d catch a snake, a crocodile, a bird, a dog, a jackal, and a monkey, tie each up with a strong rope, then tie a knot in the middle and let them loose. Then those six animals with diverse territories and feeding grounds would each pull towards their own domain and territory. The snake would pull one way, thinking ‘I’m going into an termite mound!’ The crocodile would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the water!’ The bird would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m flying into the sky!’ The dog would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the village!’ The jackal would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the charnel ground!’ The monkey would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the jungle!’ When those six animals became exhausted and worn out, the strongest of them would get their way, and they’d all have to submit to their control. In the same way, when a mendicant has not developed or cultivated mindfulness of the body, their eye pulls towards pleasant sights, but is put off by unpleasant sights. Their ear … nose … tongue … body … mind pulls towards pleasant ideas, but is put off by unpleasant ideas. This is how someone is unrestrained. And how is someone restrained? Take a mendicant who sees a sight with their eyes. If it’s pleasant they don’t hold on to it, and if it’s unpleasant they don’t dislike it. They live with mindfulness of the body established and a limitless heart. And they truly understand the freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom where those arisen bad, unskillful qualities cease without anything left over. They hear a sound … smell an odor … taste a flavor … feel a touch … know an idea with their mind. Suppose a person was to catch six animals, with diverse territories and feeding grounds, and tie them up with a strong rope. They’d catch a snake, a crocodile, a bird, a dog, a jackal, and a monkey, tie each up with a strong rope, then tether them to a strong post or pillar. Then those six animals with diverse territories and feeding grounds would each pull towards their own domain and territory. The snake would pull one way, thinking ‘I’m going into an termite mound!’ The crocodile would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the water!’ The bird would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m flying into the sky!’ The dog would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the village!’ The jackal would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the charnel ground!’ The monkey would pull another way, thinking ‘I’m going into the jungle!’ When those six animals became exhausted and worn out, they’d stand or sit or lie down right by that post or pillar. In the same way, when a mendicant has developed and cultivated mindfulness of the body, their eye doesn’t pull towards pleasant sights, and isn’t put off by unpleasant sights. Their ear … nose … tongue … body … mind doesn’t pull towards pleasant ideas, and isn’t put off by unpleasant ideas. This is how someone is restrained. ‘A strong post or pillar’ is a term for mindfulness of the body. So you should train like this: ‘We will develop mindfulness of the body. We’ll cultivate it, make it our vehicle and our basis, keep it up, consolidate it, and properly implement it.’ That’s how you should train.” ( The Simile of Six Animals suttacentral.net/sn35.247/en/sujato?lang=en&layout=plain&reference=none¬es=asterisk&highlight=false&script=latin )
this shows how little humans really know about earth, hundreds of new species are found EVERY DAY and new fossils are found every now and then aswell. i wouldn't be surprised if dinosaurs aren't extinct after all, how can you possibly know? there are so many jungles and forests that are completely unexplored, so is sea. there could be lot of crazy species living in the sea, not could be, but there are! recently i saw some other video, showing some crazy species living in mariana's trench!

Can we have a life without the bbc?
You can.
not normally one to complain about these things but, aside from the obvious clickbait, it's a bit ridiculous how bad some journalists are these days. do they just find them on the side of the road or something? this voiceover is a prime example. "it may have been bigger than the blue whale, the largest animal ever to have lived". you mean, the largest *known* to have lived? because how is it going to be bigger than something that was supposedly conclusively the largest to have ever lived? 😂
Title of video is factually incorrect.
Pretty sure God didn’t create that lol
You better be sure…..

This is a bit of scientific grey area. If 90% of the oceans are unexplored, they cannot possibly know what the biggest sea creature was
Largest ever discovered by scientists. There may be some that are larger, but those have not been discovered by scientists. There is no problem with title, no?
@@vijayendranvijay457 But we have always been told that the blue whale IS the biggest to ever exist.
@@chaz_ashley162 1) the title is incorrect, they mean largest reptile 2) if it were bigger, it would be bigger than the blue whale. The fact that we didn't know it before should be enough to understand why they would have said that the blu whale was the biggest.

Yes, but it's a reptile. Compere: sharks are superficially similar to dolphins, but sharks are fish and dolphins are mammals.

Is true that the holotype is too fragmentary for putting Icthyotitan as the largest sea creature that ever existed but its an absolute fact that Ichthyosaurs existed and the evidence of it are their remains. You have 0 evidence for claiming they didnt.
