NEW SCAM ON OUR CRUISE! (Would you fall for it?)

We talk through a NEW SCAM affecting cruisers onboard their caribbean cruises and how some end up losing money. Number one way to save money is not getting scammed by trying to save money or purchase products from untrusted sources. Are cruise passengers easy targets as travelers? Should you take the word of fellow cruisers onboard cruise ships? Should you experience the local customs and culture while in another country as a tourist? What do you do when you don’t know the language when traveling to another country? Is international travel safe? This is the latest cruise news in tandem across the cruise industry where all cruise lines are making cruise cutbacks for cruise passengers onboard cruise ships during 2024 and we were surprised by what new scam is affecting cruisers while onboard our Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship! What do cruise ships do with passengers who are not aware of their surroundings while at sea? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle these naive cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers okay with cruise lines going to unique cruise ports and experiencing local cultures? We talk through verified experiences of Cruise Passengers getting scammed and this could happen to you while preparing for your cruise or onboard all Cruise Ships including the worlds largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas or soon to be Star of the Seas 2025, and even the worlds smallest cruise ships. This could happen onboard many cruise ships whether on the Worlds Biggest Cruise Ship Class; or, the Smallest Cruise Ship Class and every Cruise Ship in between. What are your thoughts in our inside cruise chat on the new scam affecting cruise passengers on their Caribbean Cruise Ships 2024?

  • As a legitimate cancer survivor (8 years!) it infuriates me when people use cancer to scam money from people. It's just an evil thing to do.

  • Moderators should delete all posts that try to sell something. When I moderated a group, it was a rule: no soliciting. So when a post popped up, I deleted it. Also, if I see a post that is soliciting, I report it to the moderators. Nobody needs to sell anything on a FB group. Thanks for the alert!

  • I see this every single day because I belong to the FB groups for all my cruises - I have 8 coming up right now. The most common one is, "Can't make it - selling ducks. PM me." Next is, "I'm going to have to fly in - selling tumblers." And the next one is selling t-shirts. One scam has someone saying their kid is autistic and the shirts are to raise money for them. In most cases they turn off commenting so nobody can say "this is a scam - do not DM them." It is SO annoying and frustrating. I report them every time and the good admins remove them right away. Unfortunately, they even get in past the filters you have to answer to get into some groups. Every time I see it my heart sinks, especially when I see how many people saw it and liked it, having no idea how many people actually DM'd them.

  • I recently set up a sail group for a cruise we’re in next year, and I added very specific rules that nobody is to try and sell anything. Zero tolerance, I’ll be removing anyone who gets through (and I set some trip specific questions to get in in the first place). Some groups are riddled with fake tshirt tales because the admins got bored and walked away. Funny how travel agents see my rules and then decide not to sign up afterall ha.

  • JJ Cruise. This was a very timely and informative post. I was a very naive cruiser and was recently scammed out of $70 dollars buying some tumblers that were advertised on my cruise face book page. It was a lesson for me and one I won’t make again. At 72 years old I used to be a trusting person but sadly these days I no longer am.

  • As an admin on a public group with 41K members it is imperitive that people report stuff that needs to be taken down. There are only 2 of us and we could never keep up with our loyal "family" members letting us know about things they see. We have gotten everything from R rated pictures to people selling stuff or bulling other people. It is sad that adults can't act like an adult.

It becomes a fine line--how will they know if I brought a first aid item that someone on my cruise asked me to pick up for them while in port, but that is different than selling t-shirts.Botton line is to not send money in advance to ANYONE you don't know.

I agree, it's best to conduct any financial transactions on the ship once you know there are actual products the person is selling. What I have seen on FB groups and Cruise Critic roll calls are cruisers trying to get other cruisers to join in on a private excursion. Those may be legit but I'm just leery about going into any transaction or agreement with strangers online period no matter how sincere they seem or how good the small group tour seems.

I ONLY pay via credit card or PayPal, where I can claim the money back when there is fraud involved. I still use common sense, but it means I don't have to investigate each thing I might want to buy online, because I know I'm protected anyway. Plus, when you only buy via sites/people that accept credit card/paypal, you already cut out about 90% of fraudsters, because they prefer to be paid in ways that's not traceable.

  • I’m an admin for a couple of sailings for my cruises. Sometimes it’s hard to screen for members even when they answer membership questions. But I always keep my eye out and immediately ban members who make those posts. I’m considering posting this video in my groups so my members will know what to expect when I’m not on social media.

    • Pre-approved posts. That way you can get ahead of scammers. Once a scam post comes in I immediately block the the member.

  • I saw that shot glass FB ad and sure enough, it's a scam. They wanted payment prior and I said no....I would only pay onboard. That ended the conversation.

  • I saw that shot glass post in my cruise group for Icon of the Seas , April 20th. Someone called her out and she was blocked. I was like, who needs a shot glass anyway, especially when they’ve purchased the drink package???

  • It’s so sad. On my first transatlantic a lovely lady showed her quilted door hanger than she adds to each cruise. I commented that my late mum would have totally been all over making the same sort of thing. She asked me my mums name and fav colour and actually made me one!!!! She put it on our door on embarkation which was so sweet. I hate that people have taken advantage of the good nature of others. On the same cruise an awesome single traveler made wrist bands to commemorate the trip and put up posts about where to find him to give the bracelets to people- he must of met the whole sailing!!!

  • Yep, never pay in advance. The seller understands they - as the seller - have to take the chance that someone won't show. Likely they'll be able to sell it anyway while onboard.

  • Every single FB group I have joined for my cruises I have seen the scams of "selling" merch for that cruise. I always report to the group Admins (or ban myself when I'm the Admin). And, for those that I'm not the Admin, I reply with "SCAM" so others know. They just SUCK! BTW, it is illegal to use the NCL logo on any merch without their expressed consent.

  • I get to teach art on ship. People do like to buy my art to be delivered to cruise sometimes. Ship do not like cash exchanged on the ship. So this is a sad deal for us that do make cute custom keepsakes legit. :(

  • On our Sky Princess FB group we kept getting ads and fake testimonials for a excursion company promoting their tours. The problem was this company WAS the admin for the group as they had started the group. So who would I complain to?

  • I’ve seen these post in my upcoming cruise group and the exact same post in an old cruise group that I’m still in I normally grab a couple shot glasses from around the US and give them out when people come have a drink with me and my crew, I see people are even kinda worried about my post even tho I’m giving the away for free

  • I’ve seen the T-shirt scam many times on Celebrity Facebook cruise groups. The admins usually catch them but I do report them right away. Also beware of the scam that sells you a memory of your cruise when it’s over. I’ve seen slick videos and other stuff.

  • If you're going to sell something like that you should get a headcount of who is interested and then bring it on board to sell for cash in hand. There are crafters I would love to support since I never have time to make anything like that for myself.

  • This is so annoying, we have a small tour company based in Malaga, Spain. We love taking cruise customers on personal tours of our amazing city. Totally legit and a great value tour. Its impossible to get into the cruise market made even more difficult by everyone thinking everything is a scam.

  • How is it possible the cruise operators allow passengers to bring merchandise on the ship to sell to other cruisers? Even though that may have happened in the past, it seems most likely the cruise line doesn’t know it’s happening. Would be a copyright infringement if any official logos were used.
