⚓️Must Watch: Duluth Ship Plunges into Churning Storm Waves!

Boat Friends,
Join me on a thrilling maritime adventure as the mighty Edwin H. Gott departs from Duluth, Minnesota, despite challenging weather conditions. Filmed on April 27, 2024, witness the raw power of Lake Superior in this gripping video.
The Edwin H. Gott, renowned for its robust structure and impressive length of over 1000 feet, braves the elements as it heads out of Duluth. On this day, it was not just battling the typical waves but was also loaded with a full cargo of iron ore, adding to the drama of its journey. As the rain poured down and the winds howled at 30 mph, the Gott made its way under the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge and through the ship canal, where the waves were churning, splashing wildly against the walls, soaring feet into the air.
Experience the intensity from a safe distance and see why the Edwin H. Gott is a favorite among ship enthusiasts and Boat Friends around the world. The splashing waves, combined with the stormy weather, create a spectacle that is both beautiful and fierce. This video is perfect for anyone who loves ships, thrilling weather conditions, and the raw beauty of Lake Superior.

    • The ships are really fun, but I absolutely love finding the unique things to look at while we are looking at them, while not noticing them. If that all makes sense? 😂😂 An example, not many people look down and notice the reflection inside of a puddle, but I love seeing the reflection of something cool providing a new perspective. Looking at the bridge in the reflection of a puddle is something that not everybody thinks about doing, but it’s cool when you see it. Another thing is looking at the shadow from the bridge on a ship. How many people think about that shadow? However, I think it’s cool to see the bridge outline from the shadow on a ship passing under. You also see other things I like capturing birds, sand, etc. I just have a lot of fun trying to make it interesting and covering some of the art things I like as well in a ship video. I hope you are doing well. I know it’s late there in Italy, I appreciate you taking time out of your evening to drop a comment and mentioned the artistic part of the videos. Super appreciate that and thank you so much, my friend. I hope you make it here to Duluth somday. We watch a ship together.🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️

  • The bridge to ship salutes never gets old!

    @weloveups831@weloveups83111 күн бұрын
    • They never get old. You are so right. Here’s some more information about those salutes if people want to know. There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

  • The most common bow of our old lakers is the axe bow, made for cutting through waves and higher speeds. The bulbous bow is used where the ship maintains a cruisibg speed for long distances and decreases fuel consumption. TheGott hasneuther an axe or bulbous bow seems to have the plumb bow. Maritime terms are so interesting as well as their explanations. Just another bit of trivia..Park Point beach was voted one of the top 3 beaches in the USA, very impressive since its size is not. Duluth has much to offer the resident or tourist. The weather especially ever changing and strikingly beautiful no matter stormy or clear.

    • @@vibewithmike My family has been going there since Canal Park was a mostly-unused gravel lot. My great-grandparents were from Minneapolis and used to spend weekends on the shore whenever they could. My grandparents got to where they could look at a ship far out in the lake and tell if it was headed to Silver Bay, Two Harbors, or Duluth. Then they'd "race it in," no matter what time of the day or night. My first visit was as a young child in 1992, and I've probably been back 15-20 times since then (now bringing my own kids with -- the fifth generation in my family to call it "our place.") I kind of miss the shore the way it used to be, with the fishing shanties and all the Mom 'n' Pop cabin rentals. But it's great to see more people getting there to enjoy it too. It's more fun to watch my kids enjoy the big ships coming in than to watch them myself!

    • @TheMarky26 I still haven’t been to Lake Ontario. I have to check it out. I think at this point I definitely need to see all five Great Lakes just to check it off my bucket list. However, there’s only so many hours in a day. Someday I’ll get there, brother. But you know what I mean, seeing these big lakes, there’s something about them. They just draw you in.

    • Yeah, it does have a pretty flush bow. And happy Thursday to my friend. 1000 foot Great Lakes ships were constructed to fit into the lock (i.e. Soo Locks) without room to spare. It is all’s about maximizing the cargo capacity. Look at the photo linked below. You can see how those big ships are molded to the Soo Lock chamber. npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/df3bfe2/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6144x4088+0+0/resize/880x586!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Flegacy%2Fsites%2Fwiaa%2Ffiles%2F202103%2Fsoo_locks_-_usace_0.jpg

  • Very cool. Very well shot and humorously and enthusiastically narrated. Fabulous high res video that really captured the grandeur of the Edwin H Gott against the backdrop of those wonderful broody misty skies and all those wonderful older structures - And I love the little arty out-takes youve incorporated into your edit too Mike.. The reflection of the tower in the puddle gently broken by the rain drops was first class and helped elevate this whole production, as did the name sketched in the sand etc. Keep up the great work!

  • Fun video!! Growing up in Michigan we used to watch the ships all day from our home on lake Michigan. Sometimes we would drive to the Soo and watch them go through the Locks. They always seem so big. Now i live in Tacoma, WA. We get the Ocean freighters in and out of the South Sound, as well as a regular stream of container ships going in and out of the Bay. I see ships like this every day now... and it always kinda reminds me of growing up in the great lakes. I've told my partner how Tacoma kind of reminds me Duluth. The ship traffic. The lift bridge. The downtown area built along the harbor/bay. Lucky for us, though, it never gets very cold out here in Tacoma

    • It’s an absolute pleasure meeting you! Thank you so much for taking time out of your Thursday to watch this ship video. I have not been to Tacoma, but I have a few friends that live there and they talk a lot about it. I think you’re comparison is very fair. Also, when you lived in Michigan, I guarantee you that you know about bad weather. Just like us here in Minnesota. I really hope that you and your partner can visit Duluth sometime. It’s a fantastic place, extremely historic too. I hope you subscribe (it’s free) and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. • When my wife and I were first together, we vacationed in Duluth and it was really a magical place so full of history. The people there were really nice and very hard working people; you could tell that it was a close community. We toured the museum and got to finally go deep in the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald. 😢 The most awesome thing was Lake Superior itself; might as well been the Atlantic Ocean for all you could tell.

    @SpinStar1956@SpinStar195612 күн бұрын
    • You are so right about the Atlantic ocean comparison. When you’re along the coast, it really does feel like that. Another thing that is right on point, the area feels magical. The buildings are extremely old and then there are some modern buildings, you can just feel all of the history and the people that were there building the city before. It really is amazing. I hope you subscribe and come back to the channel my friend. I really appreciate you taking time out of your Thursday to watch this video. Trust me on this, when you have about a half an hour, please listen to this. It’s the most fascinating piece of audio and you literally get sucked into that night when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. This is the actual Coast Guard audio from that night. You’ll hear the Captain of the Arthur Anderson agreeing to go out to look for the Fitz. It’s unbelievable, it starts at 20 seconds. kzhead.info/sun/dpSHm5uHrGiPiJ8/bejne.htmlsi=49bdU7ab0amR8-rN

    • @@vibewithmike I listened early this morning and was quite an experience to hear everyone talking. Being a radio ham, I was struck by the poor VHF signals and think the weather was hampering them due to heavy soaking of the antennas, shunting the signal, not to mention all the pitching and rolling. It was also interest in to hear the trepidation in the Anderson’s captain’s voice, when the CG asked him to go back and look for survivors. A lot of people would think negatively but he was indeed responsible for the lives of his crew; so I actually think that during the pause, he probably took a bit of a straw-poll amongst his crew and concluded that if the situation was reversed, they’d be hopeful that someone would turn around and do the same for his ship and crew. In other words, I think he realized that it was a high probability of a suicide mission, so he had a lot to think about, and was not totally alone in being influenced to make that hard call. Finally, hats off to the CG PBY pilot for going out in that hellacious storm. However, he would not have been able to pick anyone up, because his plane would have been capsized by even one of the lesser waves. The only thing he could do is search and maybe drop survival provisions, which is valuable because he has a better view and can cover more territory. My feeling is that the Fitz broke-up (and probably lost power) so fast that you couldn’t even Mayday! Anyway, thanks for sending the GC voice link; everyone interested should listen to it!

  • Thanks for the video, my Dad sailed on the lakes for nearly 40 years, all steam powered,,, some piston engines and some turbines (steam), he retired in the mid-eighties. His ship along with the Anderson were nearby when the Fitzgerald went down. He said that his captain had plotted a course that was in a little more protected water than the Fitz.
