Selenium Deficiency In Goats!

2024 ж. 22 Мам.
30 394 Рет қаралды

We had a huge baby Spanish goat born on the farm with a leg issue. He was cramped inside his mother, therefor the tendons in his legs were not stretched out all the way. We gave him 2ml of selenium gel to help in case it was white muscle disease. After watching the baby for a few days he finally comes through and can walk on his hooves again.

  • Oh my heart broke for the baby that walks on his knuckles but he is in capable hands. I'll keep the faith. What a difference between him and the other baby goats and their playfulness. I could watch those babies jump around all day long. It's actually relaxing. Do the black snakes get the larger chickens and turkeys that free range?

  • what is called knuckling over - I would have a word with the vet about any other minerals he might need - they use paint rollers cut in half longways - you can get three splints out of each roll

  • We've had a lamb once in awhile with the same issue. We cut a toilet paper roll (cardboard part), put it down to knuckle and put vetwrap around it but make sure it's stiff enough but not too tight. Also give him some nutridrench. It gets in the system quickly and we only have the splint on 1-2 days and they're fine but always check with your vet. We even had a calf that either was born with the cow standing and had a weak joint from landing wrong or accidentally got stepped on. It worked on the calf also. Pray for wisdom always, sending wishes for a great kidding time and good health.

  • Did mom reject him? Keep giving him the selenium as he does have some problems. I’d also check with a vet, but if mom has not rejected him, that’s good as her milk will strengthen his bones tendons and Muscles and cartilages. If the mom had twins, she might have rejected him as she would’ve concentrated on the healthy one. Hi Rachel. She is so sweet and I feel so good about you two. God bless you. You don’t want no inbreeding with any of your goats, so if you plan to keep your bucks, you should wether them so they will be good companion goats instead of breeders. Love to your family and take care.

  • Splint the little baby's leg, I had a kitten that was born with front legs turned inwards and she walked on her wrists, I splinted her for a few months, in between massaged the tendons to help it to stretch.

  • along time ago, we had a goat born like this. I called the vet and he said it was a vitamin deficiency. It was one of the B vitamins (cant remember which one). The vet gave me a shot to give it and told me to give it's momma some alfalfa hay to eat. He said once they start nursing and can get the nutrients from the momma, the legs straighten out. It has something to do with the tendons. And the legs did straighten out in a day or two of me giving the shot.

She's already the size of a house (and the sire is a pygmy), and I've heard that some locales around here are deficient in selenium. I'll be sure to have one of those tubes on hand.

  • You need to have Dutch bring you some more quail eggs when he comes to get the Turkey. I think splinting the little boy would be good. No sense taking the chance of him just learning to walk that way. Your buck made some gorgeous kids. If you only get 3 or 4 does, I'd consider using him again and just not breed those 3 or 4 till next time. That would give you more time to find another really good buck for all of them. You seem to be interested in quality, not just quantity and a really good buck may be harder to find. Not sure, I've never looked for that breed myself. If I ever get into goats again, I might, I like the looks of them. Take care and have a good day. Love seeing the animals.

Shot of the silmenela vitamin e or however it's spelled the first day he come home he was standing and taking baby steps two days later i can't get him to stand at all and I'm still working with him. I think I'm going to try the to rolls or popcicle sticks. Praying that works he's very ambitious and wants to walk so bad. She had a baby born in Jan with the same problem and it was selenium dificient. She treated her with selenium and she got better. Her mama rejected her unfortunately so they nursed her on one of the other mama's. You're lucky his mom didn't. Although bottle babies are so friendly 😃. Love the Spanish goats they are beautiful.

  • The males are still edible ain't they? What do you call baby goat meat?

    @unitedwestand5100@unitedwestand51005 жыл бұрын
    • Goat meat can be called mutton, just like sheep; otherwise it is simply referred to as goat. The fact that we English speakers refer to the meat of an animal by a different word than the animal name goes back a few hundred years and can be credited to English royalty. French chefs were brought to court and the dishes they prepared were referred to by their French names. Thus cow meat became beef (fr. boeuf), pig/hog became pork (fr. porc), sheep became mutton (fr. mouton). I believe the real reason we don't eat a lot of goat here in the US is that goats were, for centuries, the family milk producer (hence "nanny" for a female). I think we all know how attached we Americans are to our pets. That's why we don't eat dog, cat, horse, even squirrel, or pigeon. Anyway, enough rambling.

      @lesadietrich4784@lesadietrich47845 жыл бұрын
    • @@lesadietrich4784 ,. Wrong! Mutton is Sheep Meat, Lamb is baby sheep meat. Goat meat from adults is often called chevon and cabrito, capretto, or kid when it is from young animals. ... Cabrito, a word of Spanish and Portuguese origin, refers specifically to young, milk-fed goat. Baby cow, or calf, is called Veal...
