Selenium Deficiency In Goats!
We had a huge baby Spanish goat born on the farm with a leg issue. He was cramped inside his mother, therefor the tendons in his legs were not stretched out all the way. We gave him 2ml of selenium gel to help in case it was white muscle disease. After watching the baby for a few days he finally comes through and can walk on his hooves again.

They're so cute 😍 and full of energy. Am glad you and Rachel caught the problem still having a little problem walking. Congratulations to all the Mama , babies 🐐. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your day
Great call Kevin! I can't believe that momma goat just had one baby. The baby goats are so precious! I just love watching them. Rachael has a pretty good arm on her.
Thanks for the update Kelvin. If you ever get down in the dumps, watching those baby goats will perk you up, they are something else 😃Maybe when you take Dutch his turkey he’ll give you a couple more quail, which would affirm what a great guy he is, hehe. Take care y’all. 👍👍👍👍
watching from the northeastern part of Thailand... i just love your videos esp your Spanish goats
Awesome thank you for watching
Had the knuckle problem with ours too and we call him knuckle head..but he was fine..
Yes, love to watch the babies.. and Skeeter🤗
That littlest baby goat is comical!! Must have springs in her legs! Need to name that one Tigger!! LOL Hope everything works out for the little knuckle walker!
Oh my heart broke for the baby that walks on his knuckles but he is in capable hands. I'll keep the faith. What a difference between him and the other baby goats and their playfulness. I could watch those babies jump around all day long. It's actually relaxing. Do the black snakes get the larger chickens and turkeys that free range?
what is called knuckling over - I would have a word with the vet about any other minerals he might need - they use paint rollers cut in half longways - you can get three splints out of each roll
Wow, look at how shiny those coats are!
Baby Spanish goats are doing awesome, Skeeter is a funny little guy to watch, all the other animals are doing awesome as well, by the way how is your garden doing? Have a wonderful day, God Bless
Great video Kev! I'm glad the buckling is doing better, I would definitely keep an eye on those legs and splint if he doesn't shape up soon, glad to see the Turkey & quail doing good too :) Hope everything goes well with the coming rain! Much love to the homestead❤🐐🦃🐔🐥
We've had a lamb once in awhile with the same issue. We cut a toilet paper roll (cardboard part), put it down to knuckle and put vetwrap around it but make sure it's stiff enough but not too tight. Also give him some nutridrench. It gets in the system quickly and we only have the splint on 1-2 days and they're fine but always check with your vet. We even had a calf that either was born with the cow standing and had a weak joint from landing wrong or accidentally got stepped on. It worked on the calf also. Pray for wisdom always, sending wishes for a great kidding time and good health.
The babies are so cute! So playful .. I hope the little guy with the leg problem does all right ..
I'm a new sub, came over from Dutch's channel. I just love baby goats!
Awesome! Thanks so much for watching
Thanks for the update, it's fun to get the tour and check in on several different animals. Nice to see more of your lovely bride too, God bless you all.
Did mom reject him? Keep giving him the selenium as he does have some problems. I’d also check with a vet, but if mom has not rejected him, that’s good as her milk will strengthen his bones tendons and Muscles and cartilages. If the mom had twins, she might have rejected him as she would’ve concentrated on the healthy one. Hi Rachel. She is so sweet and I feel so good about you two. God bless you. You don’t want no inbreeding with any of your goats, so if you plan to keep your bucks, you should wether them so they will be good companion goats instead of breeders. Love to your family and take care.
Splint the little baby's leg, I had a kitten that was born with front legs turned inwards and she walked on her wrists, I splinted her for a few months, in between massaged the tendons to help it to stretch.
along time ago, we had a goat born like this. I called the vet and he said it was a vitamin deficiency. It was one of the B vitamins (cant remember which one). The vet gave me a shot to give it and told me to give it's momma some alfalfa hay to eat. He said once they start nursing and can get the nutrients from the momma, the legs straighten out. It has something to do with the tendons. And the legs did straighten out in a day or two of me giving the shot.
Daisy♥️you are the best goat sitter IVE ever seen 🥰🤗She’s such a good girl. They certainly are energetic little things.I’d be cuddling them to Rachel 😍
Hello from New Zealand - enjoy your channel and appreciate the work you put in to it. Thanks.
Hello! I've always wanted to see New Zealand. It looks so beautiful plus I'm a huge Lucy Lawless fan, lol.
Good afternoon everyone. Good vlog as usual. Those baby goats are cute as can be. I love the way they are jumping around, so full of life. 😊💞
Awww. They are so cute! Congrats to you and Rachael. Thanks for sharing.
glad you took Dutch the turkey ... always enjoy watching the baby goats !!!
Yes I was glad to get it delivered
Daisy loves the babies
I never realized that kid goats were so entertaining.
I really think the Black Spanish goats are beautiful. Their color is amazing. Lol..the babies are super cute. Great information on the big baby boys legs. Rachel..passing out hugs and love. It's a wonderful thing to see people treating their animal's with love. ❤😊👍
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Babies look great. I’ve been in Alaska with no signal. Trying to get everything watched.
the kids look very shiny and cute they look healthy hugsssss from Ontario Canada
Awesome video Kevin, thank you...
This is a timely video for me. I'm new to goats. I have a young kiko/boer doe due to kid in early August with her first pregnancy. She's already the size of a house (and the sire is a pygmy), and I've heard that some locales around here are deficient in selenium. I'll be sure to have one of those tubes on hand.
Glad the baby is getting better! Jo Jo in VT
How fun. All farm baby animals are just fun to watch. Good for our mental health. Relaxing 😎. For me it's watching horses grazing in the pasture while the babies play. Have a nice day and thanks for sharing. So glad I found your channel through your friend. Old old old Granny
Really enjoyed your video. Keep going!
I have to say your goats look amazing!
So cute. I love to watch them jump and play.
I had a baby do that. It straightened out on its own in a few weeks. Ours was a buckling too.
Hey Kevin, It was great that you were able to take care of that lamb. The lamb was fortunate to have been born to someone who knew what to do to cure the problem. Well I'll catch later and wish you and yours a healthy happy and prosperous life. Larry
Such cute babies. I love the wavy hair on the Spanish goat kids. Daisy was telling you to put down that kid, Lol
I know, right? It's awesome that Daisy wants to protect the babies from everyone/everything, even Kevin. That shows excellent breeding/training.
Great update! Thanks!💕
Hi keven just watching your wife patting a black goat on the cable drum and noticed the centre holes are open i wondered if you had thought of a goat getting a leg stuck down one of the holes and getting a broken leg I would be inclined to put a piece of tin over them, just a thought love your channel keep up the great work, Paul
New to your channel! Came from Dutch’s channel😊
Awesome!! Thanks for watching!
Great update. The babies looks so good.
The poor little guy. He’ll end up stronger for it. We should pray that mama never has twins. She might explode with how big her babies might be.
Watching from Pennsylvania good job you're doing there. old Dutch send me over glad he did
Awesome thanks for watching!
love you guys! livin the life over there!!
Thank you for sharing! We live in Kingfisher Ok
Daniel from Arms family was looking
You need to have Dutch bring you some more quail eggs when he comes to get the Turkey. I think splinting the little boy would be good. No sense taking the chance of him just learning to walk that way. Your buck made some gorgeous kids. If you only get 3 or 4 does, I'd consider using him again and just not breed those 3 or 4 till next time. That would give you more time to find another really good buck for all of them. You seem to be interested in quality, not just quantity and a really good buck may be harder to find. Not sure, I've never looked for that breed myself. If I ever get into goats again, I might, I like the looks of them. Take care and have a good day. Love seeing the animals.
You can give a shot of Bose about 1/2 cc. I have had problems like this before and you would be amazed at how fast it can get them going.
I should add you can only get it from a veterinarian however. But I used to keep it on hand for my younger smaller does.
#Kevin I watched Dutch get 3 pigs from you today. Which is probably a couple days ago. I have been subbed to you for a while now but I didn’t have my notifications set up correctly. I want to tell you that’s some of the shiniest coats on goats I have ever seen! 😊🌟😊
My lil guy was born with white muscle disease and the vet gave him. Shot of the silmenela vitamin e or however it's spelled the first day he come home he was standing and taking baby steps two days later i can't get him to stand at all and I'm still working with him. I think I'm going to try the to rolls or popcicle sticks. Praying that works he's very ambitious and wants to walk so bad. I have him in the house to care for him myself so I really appreciate you uploading this!! Thank you for what you guys do! 🙌🏼 Just subscribed
Sounds like the vet did the right thing. Good luck!!!
Maybe u can breed tiny with a black Spanish buck and let her run with her Goat friend if that herd is kinder to her. Is that a possibility?
I would splint it for a few days so he doesn't fall behind in keeping up with Mom and nursing etc. Dont want him losing out on the fun stuff with the other kids. Then when you take it off he will be like new. Be sure to pad it with medical wrap so don't get rub sores. God bless.
Is copper something you can give as a supplement in the feed, or do you have to do the pills?
Watching Keeping Dutch earlier, he mentioned that you needed to bring his turkey to him. I told him he needed to get it from you and he said: Keeping It Dutch 2 hours ago He has to bring it to me hahaha
I noticed this when he was born and did wonder if something was up .... glad he got you looking after him and maybe a splint would definitely help for a day or two if necessary till he a little stronger but am sure you know best and his mom is a good one luckily. Best wishes from UK
Stopped by from Dutches channel. Love the content and cant wait to see whats next.
Awesome thanks for watching!
I love ❤️ channel I love goat I never thought a about them I watch Arms family home stead Now your channel too ! Hope your baby goat is better ! What’s your dogs name ?
Daniel at Arms Family Homestead is looking for a kiko buck. Do you know if you live in an area that is selenium difficient area? I watch Weed Em and Weep from AZ. She had a baby born in Jan with the same problem and it was selenium dificient. She treated her with selenium and she got better. Her mama rejected her unfortunately so they nursed her on one of the other mama's. You're lucky his mom didn't. Although bottle babies are so friendly 😃. Love the Spanish goats they are beautiful.
Yes we are defencient in Selenium here. We have the baby some selenium also.
Nice video share.
Hey I'm a new subscriber Dutch sent me God bless good luck
Thank you so much for watching!!
Quail don’t do well on mesh wire! They need to dust themselves much like pheasants. They should be on a dirt floor. Also how did that snake even get in there?
Might check with arms family, I think he may be looking for a buck.
Have you checked on Petfinder.org. for a great Pyrenees? There are quite a few, puppies and adults.
No detail about how to apply selenium & vitamin e gel? Massage it on the legs?
Hi Kevin and your beautiful wife, I am from Dutch's channel...I hope you still gave that baby goat the Selenium Vitamin E supplement. She still needs it.😍👍 Love how your wife snuggles the little kid goats.😘🥰❤ You guys have a beautiful farm with beautiful animals. Thank you for your wonderful educational vlog regarding your goats!😊 LOL! Daisy reminds me of Gabby.😍
Hey thanks for checking us out. Yes the baby did get a dose of selenium and vitamin E.
You'll want to splint it even if he's walking better until he doesn't do it anymore at all.
just watched you on keeping it dutch subscribed and thumbs up will be watching more
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
Next time that happens duct tape toilet paper tubes at the bend of the affected ankle it is loose tendons and is usually either a easy to fix genetic disorder or a birth defect and most likely you will see it from the same mom
We're going through this right now :)
Awesome👍👍 cause I know vets in my area phone me for advice .
how did you get your goats a shiny coat on their hair
You have at least one female quail. What are all their sexes?
Can you direct me back to your video on getting the goats hair shiny?
The trick is a copper bolus every 6 months and add some black oil sunflower seeds to their diet.
Are Spanish goats friendly? They seem pretty docile
They aren't wild but they like their space. Over 8 months we have had them they are getting friendlier.
Beautiful goats. What do you do with goats?
We sell them for meat goats
I used Popsicle sticks and Coban and after a week my goat was fine. What bloodline of Spanish goats do you have?
The nannies are 1/2 Koy 1/2 Syfan, the buck is full Koy.
new subbie . from Sapulpa
Awesome!!! It's great to have another fellow Okie!
How would he about putting my nubian bibles left rear leg back k in place suspect it is dislocated
How mich Selenium should I give to newly-born kids with weak legs?
The tubes of gel has the dosage on the side.
Dutch sent Me!
Came over from Dutch.
Awesome thank you so much for watching
Old video, but that kid could have used another dose of the Selenium/E supplement. No need to splint. White Muscle Disease IS Selenium Deficiency.
The males are still edible ain't they? What do you call baby goat meat?
Goat meat can be called mutton, just like sheep; otherwise it is simply referred to as goat. The fact that we English speakers refer to the meat of an animal by a different word than the animal name goes back a few hundred years and can be credited to English royalty. French chefs were brought to court and the dishes they prepared were referred to by their French names. Thus cow meat became beef (fr. boeuf), pig/hog became pork (fr. porc), sheep became mutton (fr. mouton). I believe the real reason we don't eat a lot of goat here in the US is that goats were, for centuries, the family milk producer (hence "nanny" for a female). I think we all know how attached we Americans are to our pets. That's why we don't eat dog, cat, horse, even squirrel, or pigeon. Anyway, enough rambling.
@@lesadietrich4784 ,. Wrong! Mutton is Sheep Meat, Lamb is baby sheep meat. Goat meat from adults is often called chevon and cabrito, capretto, or kid when it is from young animals. ... Cabrito, a word of Spanish and Portuguese origin, refers specifically to young, milk-fed goat. Baby cow, or calf, is called Veal...
Milk feed them male kids, and we can eat Cabrito.... I bet it's tender and delicious. Yum, yum!
👍👍👍😎
