My worst nightmare realized....2 of the 3 largest minority groups the other being Latinos/ Hispanics outside of mines (black) are proceeding to tear down civil rights advancements none of which they fought for to get into these whites only but now pwi institutions!!! This aged so well. People are asleep on legacy admissions. Every single school will ask you if you are a legacy and I met a lot of kids in college who were legacy with wealthy booster parents and all.

In case anyone was wondering about the personality score thing: The statistical analysis found a significant difference (of about 1 point on a 6 point scale iirc) between white and Asian personality scores, but the court ruled Harvard could not be held accountable for this. Basically, because these scores come from things like perception and letters of rec, the court couldn't do anything. It's worth noting numerous studies have showed that Asians with "traditionally asian activities" like piano or chess are scored lower in personality measures by admissions teams than white students with the same activities, so there is a more scientific basis to explain the difference/bias.
And how are these personality metrics objective measures? For all we know these research studies have biased metrics to begin with.

I give my respect to anyone taking the time to inform themselves and develops their own thoughts on this subject.
Line up the qualifications of black and brown students who are admitted against legacy kids. No one is giving minorities anything that doesn’t also include merit/meeting the qualifications. The delusion is ridiculous and sad.
getting rid of legacies is completely ridiculous, the whole point of institutions such as Harvard and Yale is so that the small circle of elites get to have their kids become friends and keep the wealth in the circle of friends they know, while at the same time recruiting the brightest minds in the country to work for them in the future. People are delusional to think that merit is only based on academics and not extracurricular achievements, when in reality the biggest merit has always been the wealth you are born into and the people you (technically your daddy and momma) know. Rich and powerful people play by a different standard because they made the standards poor people have to play with.

There’s way more black and Hispanic legacies than Asian legacies and the data clearly shows that black, white and hispanic applicants have a way higher chance of getting accepted with lower academic metrics than Asian applicants. Also, within the applicants the Asian demographic had the lowered household incomes and got accepted at the lowest rates. White people are 70 percent of the legacy admits which is not far off from their total percentage of the US population. They are hardly over represented.

Thank you so much for bringing up legacies. As a Black woman I am one of the first to go to college in my family. I graduated in 2017. I am the FIRST. While I know people whose great-grandparents went to college

I don't think she was saying legacies are bad, just that historically black people haven't been given equal access to education, which is why she's the very first in her family to go to college. When you consider slavery, Jim Crow, segregation which limited equal access to education, etc. etc. it's not hard to understand why past generations in her family haven't gone to college. That being said, I think it's great if a family has a legacy of being successful and well-educated. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. I think we all hope from this generation forward, we will create a legacy of success for our own descendants :)

Someone said "the people who are now getting into to college are the ones who cam afford it." I went to a predominantly black school with little to no resources my test scores were bad to say the least, my gf who is white and received an 80 percentile ACT score, told me that my test prep classes must've sucked (she went to a predominantly white school), I looked her in dead in the eyes and said we didn't have anything close to a "test prep class" we barley had science classes. Basing admission purely on test scores and GPA is not truly based on merit, it's simply unfair and will be given to those kids who grew up with resources.

I feel like the issue here is that more funding needs to be provided to poor schools. The dropout rates are already high in college & sending a bunch of unprepared students isn't going to help, just give them a couple years of debt w/o a degree at the end.

I know this is about Affirmative Action, but I want to mention that Hasan did a great job of making all Asian Americans feel consolidated by including East and South Asians in the same group. Super relatable.
That was a good point, but also a bad one... asian americans are the most economically divided group in America (90th percentile makes over 10x the 10th). Personally I feel like the broad "asian" category should be divided bc the ethnic groups that tend to be on the lower end (cambodian, hmong) are hurt by the current affirmative action set up

I was lucky enough to have a Native American grand mother and great grandmother who lived long enough to educate me about history. Oral history may be anecdotal but it is a true representation of experience's. I'll concede that they did not live on the res, but I'll also mention that they and there family refused to. My grandmother was a flamethrower when it came to liberty. She hated the government so much she would never take anything from them including SSI. Living on the land the government granted you was inconceivable to her. Sometimes I think about my dust bowl WWII grandfather and how bad ass he was, then I remember his 5 foot nothing pregnant wife back at home digging trenches to burry the first electrical line in the county. Miss me with the racial disparities about natives Americans. When I was a kid and asked her about the Great Depression she said two things "we were so poor we didn't know there was a Depression" and " if you where willing to work there was a job" My education had told me that during the depression nobody could find a job so I asked my grandparents how did you make money. They laughed "we worked" When they passed they were millionaires, not from a tech investment but through years of saving. Neither had more than a sixth grade education. I don't want to hear one more story about how this country is this or that.

I took a huge two month trip all over the US in 1999 canvassing 38 states. While taking a Greyhound down the Mississippi from Chicago to NOLA we passed a public restroom that was still segregated with “WHITES” and “COLOREDS” above the respective doors. No bullshit. Pretty sure it was Arkansas.

Back in 2003, my neighbor got into Harvard on a basketball scholarship. He definitely didn’t have the grades for it. He’s not a minority. I just thought that was a bit messed up, though it happens all the time.

Sports make money, College Football draws crowds. If people didn't have shit taste, didn't show up to those boring things, it wouldn't exist. Someone getting a scholarship for athleticism is better than getting it for your race, athleticism is something you can control (despite the strong genetic components) But you know what else has a strong genetic component? Intelligence. We fool ourselves into thinking it is about how hard a student works. Unless their is strict fear motivated discipline that is otherwise not typical of children, a kid needs passion to excel. Passion comes from talent. There is the element of "industriousness" that is important (best trait characteristic for predicting success) but that is more nature than nurture. Also, you can work hard as hell but be stupid and just run in circles.
I really wish my college admitted more athletic people by setting up much lower standard in their quota, we always lagged behind in tournaments. You see, it's not messed up, it's just you don't enjoy a certain spectrum of being within a community, it's fine though, every person has their own world to deal with.

I saw this episode when it was first aired, and rewatch it after Supreme Court decision, I felt sad. As an Asian American, I never believe my spot is taken by other minorities. For the Asian Americans that believe so, I can’t help but want to say you seriously pick the wrong battle that will hurt in the long run.
Not being discriminated against by Ivy League schools is totally going to bite Asian Americans in the ass.

If someone follow the case, Asian American groups also provide supporting materials for race conscious admission policies. We are the minorities at the end of the day and will benefit from this policy in long run and its implication in other aspects. It is not like Ivy League do not admit Asian Americans. The underlying problem here is admission process and its rating matrix are not transparent to tell why some succeed and some fail. If someone got in because of large donation, what is the proportional relationship between dollar value and point system? If someone does not have high point in leadership, extracurricular activity, personal quality, etc., why is it? The list can go on, tackling the race alone do not get the answer the students being rejected are looking for. With Columbia dropping SAT, and who knows what weight that other Ivy League put on this category, good luck to some thinking you are being rejected just because of your race.

Well if you know the history of our country's oppression towards minorities, you'd understand. People from the mainland don't even consider us as Indians as we're from the North East of India.. Racism everyday. Racism on African Students as well. I can talk about it all day. You wouldn't know how it feels to be oppressed.
I don't believe AA should be done on the basis of race but rather socioeconomic background. Although african americans do make up a larger percentage of people from poorer backgrounds thus access to poorer education systems the fact of the matter is they are not the singular entity within that bracket. Basing AA on race rather than socioeconomic background seems more to me like an insult than anything else as it makes the assumption that african americans are below their expected average not based on educational access but rather just the colour of their skin alone - which of course is incorrect. So it shouldn't be completely put away but it definitely needs to be reviewed. I also don't believe decisions should be based on educational grades alone even though I personally would fare better if that were the case but the fact of the matter is a high competitive grade from an individual with access to less speaks of character. Universities have to look for well rounded individuals.

My family and I are immigrants from the Philippines and while I didn't go to Harvard (or an Ivy League school for that matter), I do think I still did better than most people in my own part of the town. idk if my parents (who combined probably make about $85K a year now) could have afforded having me and my siblings going to tutoring classes, SAT-prep programs, etc. at the time when I was younger when they were still working their way up either. Had I applied to an Ivy League school, I don't think it's fair that a Black or Hispanic student get in over me if their scores where lower just because of their race. For all we know, our household could have had the same exact income. Great point btw!

I'm currently in college and in my experience, I learn a lot more from students from different socioeconomic classes, even sharing my race, than I do from students with vastly different races, but sharing my socioeconomic background. Of course, not two races are the same but I do believe the difference in lifestyles among people from different socioeconomic classes is greater than it is among different races.
@awaisis All true in the outside walking world where assumptions are made on the daily. I for sure wont argue with that but thankfully that is one of the few things I can state with confidence is not a part of the admission review board. How on earth can they call you lazy when you're getting high af GPAs and what gangster spends their time volunteering or being part of the chess club and why on earth would stealing come to play in that situation. The fact of the matter is unlike in the outside world where those assumptions definitely do come into play, in the review board the entirety of who you are is written in black and white. They can literally judge your character without having to make any assumptions.
This! So much this! Is the AA system currently flawed? Yes, it's got some deep damage grooves but dismantling it completely would do more harm than good. A more holistic approach to student evaluation is much needed. This is one of the reasons why I support universities putting a considerable amount of weightage on the Statement of Purpose. And Socioeconomic factors would be an excellent determining factor instead of race

the point went over people's head on this one.....Hasan is saying why go after other minorities when there are other factors that are larger and more prevalent in college admissions, like legacy admissions. People keep talking about black people....black/latino people have and still are really small minorities on these ivy league campuses. Are we really fighting about the 8 or 9% of students at Harvard that happen to be black? Why don't those who are fighting against these unfair admissions fight against legacy admissions.....I'm sure those black/latino students didn't take anyone's place and worked just as hard as anyone else to get in.

And athletes aren’t just in big sports (that promote school spirit, make money, and are accessible to most people before college) like football and basketball- there are also many athletes in niche sports (squash, field hockey, lacrosse, sailing, etc.) that not only don’t make money for the school, but reinforce class and racially based disparities in access to education (because these spots at colleges go to the rich people who had access to these sports)

At Peking University, over 99% of new admissions are Chinese compared 18% Berkeley. At Indian Insitute of Science Bengaluru, over 99% of new admissions are Indian compared to 18% Berkeley. (To be clear, I made thes up, I have no idea what the actual stats are.) This proves that even Berkeley is discriminating against Chinese and Indians and that Beida and IISc are discriminating against Indians and Chinese right? Of course not, it depends on who is applying and the quality of those applicants. Even though both Harvard and Berkeley may be in the US, you cannot assume the quality of the applicants for each "race" (however you define such things) are the same on average. In fact, there is a risk of self-fulfilling prophecy here. If "Asians" think that Harvard discriminate against them, they may be less likely to bother with it. They'll concentrate on other universities instead, like Berkeley instead. But with fewer applicants, the number who actually meet the requirements at Harvard is probably going to end up lower, sure the self-assessed "better" applicants may still try but self-assessment can only go so far. And it isn't just about the sheer number but the quality and here's the kicker. I've never studies it since it's never something I've needed to worry about but AFAICT, "holistic admission" is a bit of a dark art, as you would expect. You have a vague idea what the university likes but ultimately there is a lot you don't know. While there are similarities in what universities prefer, I'm sure there are differences too. Maybe there's a belief that Harvard cares more about volunteering work than Berkeley. (To be clear again, I made this up because the precise example doesn't matter.) If you think your chances at Harvard are low because they discriminate against "Asians" so Berkeley is your prime target maybe you're not going to bother so much with volunteer work. But assuming Harvard does care more about volunteer work, you've now made your chances at Harvard lower. Then there's that infamous admission essay that they seem to love in the US. Again if your focus is on Berkeley are you going to focus so much on the one you write for Harvard? Maybe not. "data from the Harvard case reveal Asians do need higher stats than other races to get in" What do you mean by "higher stats"? Do you mean better academics? American universities especially the prestigious private ones seem to care a great deal about stuff besides academics so this proves little. Even without race, it's perfectly possible that the "Asian" applications will as a group on average be worse in other factors they consider so will find it harder to be admitted. Hasan Minhaj alluded to this when he mentioned personalities. From what I read, this actually seems to be the major reason "Asian" applicants suffer, rather than because they consider race per se. They need higher rankings in other areas to make up for generally lower scores in "personality". The personality thing is actually an interesting point and IMO really should be the focus of the case. How is Harvard coming up with these ratings and is it fair? Is there some cultural bias against "Asians" which results in them being assessed lower when there's no evidence that these personality assessments accurately reflect how they will function as student or on the world? But what about if these assessments do seem to be accurate? Is it possible that one of the problems is people with such personalities are perceived as less approachable etc so students, colleagues etc are less likely to approach them. (Or whatever.) Should Harvard be rejecting such personalities, or instead encouraging them so that people have more experience with them and realise, their perceptions of such people are may be not so accurate? In other words, there is IMO ample room for discussion, without having to argue against considering race or holistic review. Sadly as I said, this doesn't seem to be the focus of most discussion. Also does your data include or exclude legacies? Because for various historical reasons, I'm fairly sure that "Asian" have far fewer legacies than "white". Therefore your stats for "white" are likely to be skewed by this. (By the way, they will also skew the number of admissions although with only 30% obviously not enough to account for a 25% vs 43% by itself.) For all we know from what you said, non legacy "white" actually has it more difficult than "Asian". This is actually one area where IMO Patriot Act sort of glossed over the details. Hasan Minhaj almost seem to imply that the case is about ending a holistic review of students but AFAIK, it's not about that. The main focus seems to be about ending race as one consideration. I'm not going to comment on whether race should be allowed, it doesn't matter to my point. I guess it's possible if this case succeeds, lesser universities may abandon the holistic review because there is a risk of lawsuits when students argue that their race was considered in their admission, why else did they fail to get in with the other students with worse grades who's a different race got it? And since as I said, unlike with grades a lot of the holistic review stuff is harder to compare, it's going to be more difficult to defend. Still their are various processes e.g. removing names and photos which may help. Ensuring some scoring system for admission essay etc which you can demonstrate. More to the point, even if lesser universities abandon the holistic review, I'm fairly sure the prestigious ones will keep it. They'll just abandon race and they have the money to defend any lawsuit claiming they're still considering it. But this then gets at a key point. I don't think anyone can be sure abandoning race is actually going to substantially benefit "Asian" applicants. If they're losing out because academic is less important in admission and they're on average worse in the other holistic stuff, this may very well continue. Getting back to my earlier point about "personalities" there's an obvious implication here. I would hardly be surprised if the court case ends up forbidding race as a factor in admission but doesn't deal with the possible bias in "personality" or other such assessments or even what the case is allegedly about i.e. discrimination against "Asians". So don't be surprised if this case doesn't really benefit "Asians", it may even harm them. I have a strong belief that many of the funders don't really give a damn or would even be happy with discrimination against "Asians". I'm fairly sure you're going to find people claiming stats prove either side based on universities which abandoned race, i.e. some claim they benefit "Asians" others saying they harm them. Assuming that it does end soon, 10-20 years from now you're likely to get the same thing. Since nothing is constant, trying to predict what things would have been like were it not for an end to affirmative action is, well difficult at best. In fact, with COVID-19 having upended everything, such predictions face even more difficulty. If court does do something about the "personality" rating issue, then it may actually have a wider effect including on holistic review, whether you think this is a positive or not. But as said, I'm not convinced this is going to happen. Time will tell I guess. As for holistic selection itself, I make no real comment. I come from a background where it's very rare (only for certain things like medicine) so as may be obvious from what I've said, I do find it a bit weird. Yet at the same time, I do agree that especially when you are talking about very high levels of academic performance, e.g. 1550 vs 1500 SAT, it's questionable if the person who performed 1550 is more likely to be a better university student and better at some defined job than the person with 1500.

Additionally, around 17% of Harvard's incoming freshman come from Massachusetts. About 85% of Berkeley's freshman come from California. Both have vastly different policies on legacy admission, athletic recruitment, etc.

So there's no real evidence the court case is going to to anything significant for Asian students. They will still be getting poor "personality score" ratings so will still be losing out. However since most seem to agree that race (or student diversity or whatever) being a consideration does benefit African American and likely Hispanic or Latino students, there does seem to be a risk a court banning it will harm them. So it seems to be it's completely understandable why there is great fear this court case is going to do nothing for Asian students but will harm African American and Hispanic or Latino students. Even white students aren't actually likely to benefit that much. Let's consider the case. About 14.3% of Harvard's intake was African American. If you cut that down to 7% you've cut it down by over half. Maybe Asian goes from 25.3% to 27.5%, a bump but not that major. White and other goes from about 46% to 51% again in the scheme of things, this isn't actually that great a boost in the chances of a white or Asian student getting in. However it's made it a lot harder for an African American one to get in. (I didn't bother to consider Latino or Hispanic, but you basically get the same result.) It seems to me a far more meaningful debate instead of banning race as a consideration, is as I said in my first reply, asking what's up with the personality score. Why do Asians perform so poorly on it? Is it fair? If not, how can it be improved? Again I see no evidence this court case is going to do anything about it.

As an asian immigrant and parent, I also heard my kids will have to get way, way higher score to be admitted in the same university than any other races. I mean, ANY other race. Tbh, I feel it's not fair why race should be one reason to get disadvantage to get into school. It's just not fair to see one individual as a represent of certain group. However, at the same time, I believe in the system to give better chance to less-fortunate. Without it, the world will become a place where every chance is already determined the moment you are born to certain family. Therefore, as Hassan pointed out, people are barking on the wrong tree. People should't feel victimized by the other race. Especially when there is this unbelievable crazy system that gives merits to those who donates huge money or who has alumni parents. How can this even be a thing? Legacy admission. Get rid of it first.

@@myescape607 This distinction has to be made largely as a result of legacy admissions. If primarily white students who had poor grades didn't get grandfathered in, that'd free up 10-20% of admissions to these colleges. Asians make up 22.2% of Harvard's admissions; I'm not saying more shouldn't get in due to their race. If they've earned it with their merits, they deserve it. But going after the tiny amount of black students getting in from AA is a drop in the bucket in comparison. Not to mention that race isn't the only factor, and that oftentimes socioeconomic background matters more than race; it's just that the two are often correlated in this country.
First off it's time to axe legacy admissions. Secondly, using affirmative action to try to write racial disparities is like trying to use Band-Aids over a bullet wound. What we should be doing is giving more resources underprivileged schools, giving opportunities to minorities, etc. We should not try to correct this by then stacking the deck against somebody else. There's no reason I should be rejected from a school just because of my race. That itself is discrimination. Hassan says it's not a one in one out policy, but it really is. There are only a certain number of spots for an admitted class that a college shoots for, and if too many of one group get in, they have failed that objective so they will tweak their metrics to advance their goal

I would have loved for you to sit in with Crowder on this subject. In his video (about the same time as yours) he claims that Asian's applying for Harvard are required to score higher on SATs. I believe he said its was 1450 for Asians 1310 for Whites and 1150 for African Americans. He quoted sources it would have been cool to see someone on the other side of the issue able to push back a bit, so we can find truth in the matter.
He won't. He probably would cry about Asians being over-represented in Harvard with 22%. Or he will start questioning why people are more worried about losing Harvard admission (something that is life-changing) than being worried about racists calling Asian-Americans names.
The guy who did that study says himself that there isn’t enough empirical evidence to say AA is hurting asian american’s chance at getting into college. The study was also a MODEL (not actually numbers from a college) which made the sat score one of the only factors at getting into college.
Raj S the guy mentioned this in the video, and IF harvard is conspiring against asains by making their reviewers give asians lower scores on personality traits, I don’t see how that is the fault of AA. So...im Indian, West Indian of Indian descent that is. I have a black friend, whose father was a fairly wealthy doctor. I on the other hand, did not have as much, I wasn't poor, but I still had to work full time at the university and do school at night to pay the bills. I helped my friend with homework, helped him study for exams. My GPA was half a point higher. Some of our applications were to the same schools. I helped him with that and his essays. We wanted to hopefully go to the same college together. Some schools, He got in , and I didn't. I was crushed about it. Couldn't believe it. He felt so bad and straight up told me it was probably Affirmative Action. He had millionaire parents. I washed dishes in high school to make part time money, at times, his dishes. That was the day I lost respect for Affirmative Action. I see the good in it, but it has obvious flaws. This was the 90's. In my head, I saw a system that gave acceptance to the son of a millionaire with barely average grades over another minority, with superior grades. I've never felt good about AA since then and always believed they have to really enhance the system to give those that really deserve it a fair chance, and it shouldn't be avail to those that have millions and poor grades. I hope people can understand what I am saying here.

economic barriers are outside of the child's control whereas their gpa is. they've displayed a high gpa and have proven their eligibility, moreover, under exigent circumstances brought about by economic hardship. yes, they should be given priority consideration, if the merits are there, it is worth it to do that. affirmative action quotas on the basis of any group identity are going to create failure but we don't fully appreciate yet where the line is for reimbursement for oppression (like after segregation) and just plain tokenism

One thing no one mentions is that Asian Americans are largely not from oppressed backgrounds, barring the Chinese/Japanese who were used/abused to build the railroads in this country. Most of the Asian-American community in the U.S. came to this country after Civil Rights, from countries where they had advantages black and hispanic people never had here. Like Hasan's uncle, my dad came here with a small amount of money from India ($20) in the early 80s. But my dad was always pro-Affirmative Action even if it didn't help his kids (my sister and I) because he recognized that while he came here with $20, he also got a near-free university education in India despite being lower class. He was able to be a CPA in India, which led to him going to UPenn for his MBA, and he came to America without debt. He was able to have a primary and secondary school education which was quality despite his socio-economic status, because India took education of its children seriously post-Independence (when India was socialist, btw). My dad never had time for these South Asian-Americans who literally forgot where they came from. He was a Democrat til the day he died. Oh, and I got a 1510 on my SATs back when they were out of 1600, , and was top 10 (not top 10%, top 10) in my private prep school, and I didn't get into an Ivy. And I didn't begrudge it one bit. You know why? I knew the quality of my application was lacking because school bored me immensely, so instead of doing extra curriculars I did a lot of drugs to stave off the monotony of AP classes (which I got all 5s in anyways). Not exactly something you can put on your applications. I still got into a great school (based solely on those numbers), and now 15+ years after my undergraduate graduation, I read applications for that school, and do admission interviews in my town, and you can tell when a kid is in every single extra-curricular to pad their resume because they think it'll help their admission, when they're not really passionate about any of it. That's not really the kind of application you're looking for. I'd seriously call out the Asian-American tiger parent mentality here, more than anything. Being Asian, education is largely joyless with the pressure your parents put on you. Luckily I loved school and learning naturally, so I didn't have this problem, and thus I could find where I belonged and thrive. However, my sister went through school like it was a business, and is now in a job she was basically funneled to her whole life which she really doesn't care about, after she, guess what, went to the Ivy in our family.
There's still massive persecution and poverty now but it's just hidden in part because many AAPI embrace the model minority myth rather than admit there's long-stemming issues not to mention all the barriers encountered by new arrivals including ICE detainment sweeps.

Good grades=good university=good job, no one cares about education get real. Everyone cares only about the money. Also if you want to flex scores 1550 and 36. 11 5s (senior year results not out yet). Obviously fell short of Harvard, I was aiming for the whole NE area. My sister followed my dad's footsteps and went to Penn. I love learning. If you spent all that time getting a 1550 and all those 5s on your AP, but don't care about any of it.....that's sad. I didn't get an education to make money, I got an education to pursue what I care about. I don't think Asians are disadvantaged in the job field at all. Asians dominate most of their job fields, whatever they choose to do. I think they're probably more disadvantaged specifically in Ivy admission, and that's it. And I don't think that matters. To me, the Ivys can be so selective that they want a diversity of life experiences, not cookie cutter prep school kids who've been driven their whole lives to achieve a certain bar to get into the "right" place to get the "right" job without thinking what they really care about. Tell me, is the 1550 with massive amounts of prep courses both in high school and paid for outside of class (not saying that's you) better than a 1300 with no prep from a kid in a failing urban school? I'd say no. If I'm reading your comment correctly, you're a HS Senior and about to go to college, so I encourage you to figure out who you are, and pursue that recklessly, even if it doesn't fit what your parents want you to do.

In a country where race was a factor of exclusion for college admissions leading to poverty of a whole race of enslaved and shunted black Americans - they matter. Their race matters. Their history is valid. I totally agree it shouldn't ideally be included. there should be other restoration efforts to empower the community. Affirmative action is not even shit and leads to perceived inequality when really, if the community was supported via restoration, that would just be the outcome via equality . Oh well - america will likely never pay enslaved black Americans back like how Germany paid enslaved Jews back.
Before Trump was elected, I had thought maybe the US had progressed to a point where Affirmative Action was no longer needed. But watching the pure hate pour out from Trump supporters over these past three years, my stance today is that the US is not ready to remove AA laws yet. Minorities and other groups discriminated against still need the protections those laws provide. I don't know when people here will progress to a point they can be trusted to judge people solely on their abilities and not discriminate against them for their race or other characteristics that shouldn't play a role in their decision making, but today is not the day.

If a college is a private institution, you have no right to say that legacy should not be included. Some schools have the heritage and history imbued into them, where students of families all hail from one school. That's something many families are honoured to be a part of, and those students still have to score to get in, except they have a different quota. If you're not happy with that, just create more schools that do not have legacy then. But what's with trying to change other private institutions?

I saw this when it firsrt appeared here years ago. Now, watching it again, I realize that Hasan truely saw the sad future that is today.
First off : Hasan, great job in relating Asian Americans. We are a very diverse group and even though I am of Hong Kong background i still was able to relate. Good work. I will start by saying this: Affirmative Action needs to be replaced, not killed and left to stay dead. We need to recognise the value diversity has in education- in race, in religion, in economic level, in sexuality and so on. I fully support my Latino brothers and sisters, my black brothers and sisters getting opportunities to higher education, to show and make an impact on society. I do not oppose that, and I could never stand in the way of equality for minorities. But I also cannot sit contently that students are having to meet higher bars or are being rejected because they are Asian. Many Asians have only arrived in the past 60 years. And we have never been a group of power in this country, much less a powerful, oppressing group. Why are we punishing Asians for the injustices suffered by minorities? No, what we need to do is reform affirmative action to continue to allow minority students and instead go for the bases of power- the legacy admissions, and the wealthy admissions. Don't cut our admissions, cut theirs. How many avenues to success do Asians really have in this country? How many avenues to success do rich people have? My point exactly. I have no interest in being pitted against other minorities so that legacy kids and wealthy minorities can walk in and take the product of our struggle. It would do benefit to everyone for the wealthy to go to public schools and get to really know normal people and for the hardest working among us of humble backgrounds to be able to aspire to the peak of education, and to not have our backgrounds, nor our bank accounts hold us back. This is an issue where they are playing us all. The moment they kill affirmative action, they won't look back to make schools fair. They'll leave black kids out, they'll leave Latino kids out, They'll be finished 'working' with Asians and go back to shitting on us. And poor white people? Don't be fooled. You're not part of their group, you're just the giant demographic they scare into voting every two years. They're going to look past you, walk into university and you won't see any benefit at all. They look down on you like the rest of us, no matter the blood and sweat your family gave this country. We cannot let this group of powerful and rich people continue to play us and make us hate each other. We suffer so much more in common and we need to learn to speak and think for ourselves rather than 'pick a side' I speak up because this issue more than others makes me realise as an Asian American, as an American, I cannot always count to be spoken for and represented. I cannot stay quiet while Conservatives blatantly weaponize us against other minorities. I cannot stay quiet while 'progressives' tell me 'asians have it good enough' and to shut up. Please, if you have any further thoughts do share- this is an issue that needs to be talked about.
@N P C I don't know where I said I hated white people. I include white people in my argument, the group of people I think that need to be re-evaluated in power are the wealthy. Legacy admissions are not merited, and take up a completely unfair amount of spots. These spots could be better redistributed in opportunity to groups of people struggling with institutional racism and institutional discrimination and disadvantage. Wealthy people will always be provided for in this country by their own resources. They certainly are not the majority. As a country that serves its people's wills and needs, shouldn't we work to do that? The victims of discrimination can be white, too. When I use the term minority, it is to address the plurality of groups of disenfranchised and disadvantaged people. And white people who are minorities have found some justice, thankfully so far. LGBT people can be white. They faced a great struggle and still do, and some of them are white. Some of these white LGBT people also 'benefit' from 'special treatment.' I prefer to see it as some LGBT people who happen to be white happen to have laws in place to ensure they are treated like people. Arabs are white. Muslims can be white. Many Jews are white. Southern and Eastern Europeans are white. All of these groups still face terrible discrimination today. They certainly are included under some of the discrimination laws we have today. The only way I can see things from your point of view, is that 'white' people may not be explicitly protected in the skin colour political situation. But if you honestly do not see the discrepancy between the treatment of people who appear as white and the treatment of people who appear as non white, and beyond this, You still cannot connect how non-white appearing people need legal protection to have equal opportunities as guaranteed by the constitution, then I don't know what to do.
Read closely, I never excluded white people in my post. Excluding people on the colour of their skin would be contradictory to my position to REFORM affirmative action, not abolish it.

It is to remind this currently invalidated block of people that the group's they have been supporting by majority do not have their interests at heart. Hasan, brother how brave, i can not tell you how long I have struggled to explain friends of mine who are not of color, as we see it, that affirmative action is still needed, you and your staff have taken the subject head on and explain fully why it still needed. Of course it needs to be updated and improved but you proved that there are still nefarious forces that will put on a new face to strike this down because there is an agenda that is biased towards a certain population in this country for their fear of being overwhelmed. As an educated black man, I see this as a clarion call for us to begin work among ourselves to build our communities and begin to fight to give our children the kind of education that puts them on equal footing with Asian kids. We should aim to break our need for affirmative action. I believe that right now there is enough collective intellect among us to begin that work at the grassroots.

3:36 this is so true it hurts, when my Asian parents meet with their Asian parent friends. GPA is ALWAYS gonna be discussed. No matter what the topic is.
In the modern day, every Asian student knows that it’s application suicide if you apply to school with the Asian marker ticked. Everyone expects more from you, vs if you ticked White or even black. What they’re arguing is that why should it be so much harder for me, as an Indian, to get into a top college over some other kid who didn’t try as hard to get in. At the end of the day, I didn’t take some 1000 dollar study course for the SATs, I just worked my ass off. I’m willing to sacrifice entire years of my life to get into a good college, and for all of that to die away because some other kid of a different race got in because they weren’t Asian. That’s extremely unfair to me.
Same, man, Indian and all. I did take a prep course. Want to know what my score was before any practice whatsoever? 1550. My score when I submitted college apps? 1590. I wasn't just a bit ahead of my peers, but fucking miles. No one was within 100 points of my SAT. I took many times more STEM extracurriculars than others; I participated in every single one my school offered. I'm willing to bet my awards (trophies, medals, certificates, etc) count is more than the entire top 5% of my class combined. It's not like I grew up with resources either; I was raised in a one-bedroom apartment. The result? A latina girl with objectively significantly worse qualities in every possible field got into Harvard, and I did not. All this and people still think AA should exist; it's baffling.
It's like they think "oh wait they had access to prep courses therefore they had an unfair advantage" is a valid argument that accounts for every single other variable.

@@airplayrule There is no “earning” things when you have vastly different qualities of education based on socioeconomic class. There is a reason the SAT score is highly correlated with your socioeconomic class. It is a fact that people of Asian ancestry make up some of the highest earning groups. Most of them are descendants or direct immigrants that were purposefully selected for their wealth or education. Other groups were purposefully segregated, and made to go to worst quality schools. So it’s not really a meritocracy if you don’t get the same prep opportunity ON AVERAGE. Why is it that blck Harvard and Whte Harvard graduation rates are essentially the same if they were less qualified? Of course, it’s harder for a kid to earn an A+ versus an A when they are more economically disadvantaged. You could be smarter than someone and they will still do better than you on the SAT because they have access to tutoring/prep courses and can afford to retake it. Of course they’ll do better than you if you have to work a part-time job to help your family while they don’t. Besides, the kids going to the schools all have extremely high GPA and amazing extracurriculars. It’s not like they’re letting students with B- get in. They ALL have A’s.
