On the latest Patriot Act, Hasan Minhaj dissects Amazon.com and the arguably questionable business practices it has used to grow from an e-bookstore into a powerful, multi-faceted corporation that controls a huge chunk of the online cloud. Hasan also examines whether our current antitrust laws might need an overhaul for the digital age.

  • This is so true. In India, Amazon asks you to submit 3 invoices from your vendors who have supplied you more than 10 units. Without this you won't get approval in certain categories, and after investing in ads and losing money to Amazon on shipping for a year or so, you find your top sellers in Amazon's private label and that too from your vendor. So they have your data, they know what sells at what price point, they know from whom they have to purchase.

    • it's primarily to bring in a bigger audience. YT prioritizes watch time so if a 100K people watch the whole episode on YT, YT will start belting stuff form Patriot Act's YT channel over a bunch of people's Recommended page. soon it'll be just digital exclusive clips or segments but the idea is to use YT to grow the audience of the show on Netflix. they prob won't post more than a few full episodes on YT.

Now i get why Indian government made policy changes to restrict these companies to sell their products at a cheaper price(Amazon had to pull out thousands of products). Always proud to be an Indian who stops such companies. If these companies are not stopped now then maybe in few years they will start to interfere with geo political issues around the world. • I actually don't find him particularly funny as a comic but I love the concept of this show and what he's done with it so far, it's basically a more global version of what John Oliver is doing and we really need this right now. There's so much that divides us across international borders but issues like Amazon, Saudi Arabia and most importantly climate change (which I assume he'll get to) are global issues that we need to come together on and tackle together. There's no use coming down hard on Amazon with taxes if they can just move their HQ to some tax haven, it doesn't help if the US stops selling arms to the Saudis if Europe keeps doing it, and I don't think I need to explain how this applies to climate change. We're one effing species damnit, borders are a construct, race is a construct, we share one planet and it's the only one we have, let's take a moment to look outside our own a hole.

  • Man, the stuff with Amazon is such a weird space to navigate. I try not to use them as much as possible, but to a certain extent they have become unavoidable. I think that's while it's okay to understand that you'll use them because they are so convenient, it's also important to still vote in legislators that will strengthen anti-trust laws, make them pay their fair share in taxes (I'm pretty sure Amazon paid $0 in federal income tax in 2017), and to generally create legislation to reign these powerful companies in.

    • In its annual report filed to the SEC in February 2018, Amazon estimated that not only would the company not be paying anything in 2017 federal income taxes, but it would be getting a $137 million tax refund. So how did Amazon, which reported $5.6 billion in profit, expect to get money from the federal government in April? Tax credits and stocks Amazon lists two line items that likely got them here: tax credits worth $220 million and stock-based compensation worth $917 million. These reflect the normal workings of the tax system, according to Annette Nellen, professor and director of the Master of Science in Taxation program at San Jose University. Also: Think about the sales tax they generate on the state level.
