This video discusses the philosophies and beliefs of Bruce Lee, looking for recurring themes among his many notes and quotes. I take a look at why Bruce felt it was important to remain adaptable and to go with the 'flow', as well as his views on the importance of will power and self development.
Bruce Lee was an amazing fighter and an incredibly charismatic presence on screen. Both these things I feel, stemmed from his philosophy and his utter conviction in everything he said and did.
Thanks for watching and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

  • Love how you used Bruce Lee’s wisdom to explain why you shouldn’t blindly follow his words. Doing so would completely go against his very ideas.

    • Well wisdom knows no age. Its often just the arrogance of elder people to claim wisdom only for those of high age and lifelong study. But in reality, well a 10 year old can have more wisdom than a 85 year old who studied all his life. Wisdom comes from within our spirit/mind/soul. Not from the age of our body.

    • I love Bruce Lee and always have and always respected him for who he was he was very open-minded. He took it to the extreme where he put his family through a lot. My brother and I took up martial art we love it but we don't go to the extreme we're very open-minded we meditate I live alone so I have more time to meditate my brother has a family so he has more time 2 practice then meditating we get together on the weekends. We do a lot of stretching a lot of practicing but we do not take it to the extreme. I don't want no one here to think that I am downgrading Bruce Lee because I love him I just think he went above the martial arts and himself and his family please don't respond to me like if I'm a bad person.

    • But my brother's , " as greatness gives you the authority to dictate others to the treasures you possess" Greatness is necessary if you love an art so much that you want to teach it the masses , as balance gives you the knowledge you need for yourself, and greatness for your brothers. Balance is good, but think if he didn't pursue greatness to inspire us , will even this " balance" be possible Someone has to do it.

  • 1:00 "It's also interesting to put Bruce Lee's philosophy into context considering his influences." *Each of the following quotes from this video were quotes from other thinkers...* 1:58 - From Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy 3:09 - From Kuan Yin, in works by Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) 3:19 is paraphrasing this as well 4:28 - J. Krishnamutri 5:20 - From Steele Mackaye's work on "The formative process" (The Law of Harmony) 8:55 - from Master Lu's Spring and Autumn Annuls (Lushi chunqiu) 11:57 - Herman Hesse's 1919 Essay, Self-Will. See book: "If the War Goes On" 13:11 - J. Krishnamurti answers, "what is intelligence?" 14:20 - Abraham Kaplan wrote this; I believe it's from his 1964 work, The Conduct of Inquiry 14:32 - Jean Paul (Richter) German Romantic-era novelist and writer penned this.

    @REASONvsRANDOM@REASONvsRANDOM3 жыл бұрын
  • I read this book called The Way of Zen by Alan Watts recently, and I have discovered this clarity like never before. The words of Bruce Lee, Krishnamurti, Lao Tzu, Musashi, Takuan Soho now make real sense to me. "When sitting, just sit. When walking, just walk." Putting this in practice has reduced the anxiety I felt when I had a lot of things to do in front of me. Although I can still be more in tune with the flow (Tao), I have realized the effectiveness of being in it. I am more determined to do things one after another without 'trying' to be determined. Like flow.

  • For those of us who keeps judging Bruce as being unoriginal, we have to keep in mind that he uses these traditional concepts because it compliments what he wanted to teach. But not a lot of us know that many of his own ideas are more obscured due to the fact that they are more private - which can be seen in his journaling and earlier research papers. For example, there is one where he took a shot at Descartes' 'reasoning'( I love it) *_"Cogito Ergo Sum"_*_ Descartes dictum, which, when translated from the French reads, "I think, therefore I am." This being of the "I am" is being deduced from "I think" is merely a knowing. This being knowledge, but not life. And the primary reality is not what I think, but that I live, for those also live who do not think. Although this living may not be a real living. God! What contradictions when we seek to join in wedlock life and reason! The truth is, *__"Sum, ergo, cogito"_*_ - "I am, therefore I think," although not everything that is, thinks. Is not conscious thinking above all consciousness of being? Is pure thought possible, without consciousness of self, without personality? Can there exist pure knowledge without feeling? Without that species of materiality which feeling lends to it? Do we perhaps not feel thought? And do we not feel ourselves in the act of knowing and willing?_ *_The defect of descartes_*_ discourse On Method lies in his resolution to begin by emptying himself of himself - of Descartes, of the real man, the man of flesh and bone, the man who does not want to die - in order that he might be a mere thinker - that is, an abstraction. But the real man returned and thrusted himself into his philosophy."_ - Bruce Lee None of this refutes the fact that he was influenced by some philosophers, but it shows that he had his own stance on philosophy, whether people see it as original or not, it stayed true to who he was and what he taught. • Another fantastic breakdown. Bruce's philosophies have always helped me personally. One can't help but draw parallels to Jeet Kune Do, when thinking about eclectic fighting styles. The biggest takeaway when it comes to training in Martial Arts, especially traditional styles, is to absorb as much as you can, while remaining true to yourself and not losing sight of how you express yourself most naturally. Thank you.

  • Amazing video. I agree with the points you pointed out. I later learned that he even incorporated concepts like Gestalt therapy and somehow added that to his philosophy AND martial arts. He is amazing. Some of my favorite quotes from him: “As long as I can remember I feel I have had this great creative and spiritual force within me that is greater than faith, greater than ambition, greater than confidence, greater than determination, greater than vision. It is all these combined. My brain becomes magnetized with this dominating force which I hold in my hand.” "Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one's potential." These 2 quotes my not necessarily reflect his philsophy, but rather his attitude towards life - which is very inspiring.

    • Also another subject to look into if you haven't already looked into it is his philosophy on Jeet kune do and what made him think of combining all these martial arts and how he was the first ever to stem the the idea of mixed martial arts, although I think his philosophy on Jeet kune do goes far deeper than MMA you can still bring that philosophy to MMA and you see alot of the best fighters in the world using that flow philosophy, it's a great philosophy to use for almost anything but he made a huge impact on martial arts with his philosophy and ideas, it was looked down on to train in multiple martial arts in his era because they thought you weren't being loyal, everyone thought their martial art was better than the other but what Bruce lee was doing was taking in all these different martial arts and using what he found really worked for him from each martial art and turning it into one artform or idea which was Jeet kune do, I have his original book "tao of Jeet kune do" it's very interesting he wrote it while in the hospital, it's got plenty of little nuggets of his philosophy that you'll never see in the KZhead videos, if you're interested in Bruce Lee's philosophy I really recommend looking into Jeet kune do and maybe getting that book

  • Bruce Lee is a person in constant state of flow. his philosophies, and his methods have contraditcted it one way or another but is all in pursuit of his self improvement and "being" despite inconsistencies, i believe it was because he was not afraid to contest his thoughts. he was not afraid to examine his own ideas, and challenging it. he was not afraid to evolve he admittedly said "honestly expressing yourself" and being who you truly visualize yourself to be (completely knowing and realizing one's self -and self actualization) is a very hard thing to do.. but bruce always pursued that goal. to be the greatest person he was meant to be.. the greatest version of himself.

  • It looks like a very well thought through and researched video that must have taken a lot of effort to be made. It's very interesting, informative and inspiring at the same time. Well done!

  • Bruce Lee great Philosopher & great martial arts scientist. He discovered so many things & he achieved so many wonders. Still to day no body reach the Bruce Lee records. This is impossible task for all. I saw the Bruce Lee horoscope. Sun (10th lord) placed in Scorpion ascendent. So he famous like sun & he inspired like sun. How many years sun raised in the sky that many years Bruce Lee got famous & he greatness heares all.

  • ThankYou so much ! For your time and effort in Condensing so important philosophical points realised by Bruce at such a young age. Its a act of constant Reflection of one's actions and it's consequences. Aka Pocket Diary Philosophy (I just made that up! )But sounds fit. I also believe in Mind Body Sync - that's when FLOW state kicks in. Through Repeated practice day in day out with no attachment to it's fruit but with the Fragrance can deliver you the sense of Power which you don't control it but just radiates - FLOW and TIME concept doesn't exist in this State. It Vanishes .
