6 cores are the modern standard for gaming PCs, so the cheapest one is naturally going to be of interest to gamers looking to save some money on their new build. Not everyone wants to risk buying used CPUs, and the fact that the ancient FX-6350 is still currently available is something of an anomaly, so with those caveats in mind the Ryzen 5 4500 is the lowest cost 6 core on the market. With strong competition from the slightly more expensive quad core i3-12100F CPU, is there room in the market for the 4500, or are the corners that AMD cut in getting it down to its £60 price point too severe?

Wake up honey!! Iceberg Tech uploads a Ryzen 4500 video

Yes babe im waking up😴
I have one of these paired with a second-hand RX 5600 XT graphics card and, while it might not set the world alight, surprisingly it has so far played everyhing I've thrown at it at 1080p on default settings, and stays cool and quiet. Very happy, for the price.

3600 is better, imo
@@StarCo11 yeah it is. the 4500 is basically a 4600G but without its graphics and slower clocks
Yeah, at that price point there's better options unless you really have to watch pennies. Tons of used r5 3600's out there for around $80, or buy a new r5 5600 for a little bit more. I saw amazon had a sale on 5600 recently at $120.
That’s my CPU
I have it paired with an 8GB RX580, it runs macOS excellently

If you go by the fact that the 5000 series is better than the 3000 series, which is better than 2000 and so on, the 4000 should be ahead of the 3000 series. But, it isn't. The 4500 has slightly lower clock speeds, 1/4 the L3 cache, and much less PCIE bandwidth than the 3600, it's direct "predecessor."
this and the 5500 are great for getting people into pc gaming. I've build cheap pcs with these for friends
I bought a 5500 2 years ago to upgrade from an R7 1700, it's been working a treat with my aging 2060S ever since. It's a perfect cheap upgrade for budget 1080P gaming, better frame times, random hitches gone etc and as my PCB is a B450 I don't have PCIe4 to miss out on either.
the fx cpus were found to be lying about core counts, the six core parts are actually 3-core 6-threads
Great video. Thank you.
I think I have learned more about pc parts because of this channel more then any other place on the internet and i'm glad of it.
Okay the 4000MHz compatibility was interesting, NGL was amazed to see it actually work!
My 4500 been treating me alright for a year, really nice CPU at a bargain price. Pairs well with my RX 6600, make a really nice, cheap gaming + productivity setup. Might upgrade to a 5600 someday.
Once price drops a bit r5 5700x3d seems like it'd be a nice upgrade. Planning on that eventually for my 3600.
I'm not sure there's much value going up to a 5600. My system is about the same as yours, it's a 5500 with a 2060Super and for gaming I don't really see much point adding more CPU without adding more GPU. I'll probably wait until I platform swap next time.
@@darthwiizius Ryzen 5500 is a fair bit better than ryzen 4500 tbf. Ryzen 4500 is worse than Ryzen 3600. Also depends a lot on what games you play, some a better CPU can make a lot of difference.
@@Flyon86 It's a bit better (very slightly faster than a 3700X) but I think we're both still GPU constrained, except for in e-sports titles and emulation. But I suppose it comes down individual use cases in the end. If I pick up a cheap used 2080ti I reckon that will be more or less pushing the sensible limit of my CPU and system.
@@darthwiizius Yeah, although depending on your motherboard the 5500 could be causing reduced performance on you gpu too since it doesn't have pcie 4.0. OP said he had rx 6600, so switching to a ryzen 5600 should give him a bit of boost just due to that alone. Personally I think moving up to a ryzen 5700x3d (or 5800x3d) makes the most sense for a substantial upgrade if you have a 3600 or 5500 etc. like we do and don't want to buy all new for am5. A lot of games like the big cache from the x3d and it should help with 1% lows a lot.

Great video, as usual. This was actually the CPU that i bought for my recent build. Got to use it for a few months until I upgraded to a 5700X. Overall, when paired with my 6700XT, the thing was doing just fine in esports titles like CS2, but in games such as RDR2 or Death Stranding, there was some big frame drops here and there, which was a bit annoying imo and also one of the main reasons why i upgraded to a 5700X.
That's my exact setup. I'm quite happy with it.

@@CaptainZombeh I had a 5600g (I still own it) and changed it for a 5700x. My GPU is a 6700XT. Quite happy with it.
I actually got this one for my PC, because I needed something with ReBAR support for my Intel Arc A580. So far, I'm happy with it, the performance is good (I do gaming at 1080p and 60 fps), except I'll need a new cooler as well, cause the stock one just isn't doing it. Even with new thermal paste, synthetic stress testing leads to temperatures just over 90 C, which is pretty bad at stock clocks (at ~4.2 GHz boost), even if no normal workload pushes the CPU that hard, neither games, nor streaming, nor video editing or compiling code.
Great video! I use a Ryzen 3 3100 which is in your video as a comparison! I’m really happy with it but will probably upgrade to a R5 5500 or 5600 if the price for the performance is right. Love the AM4 and see no real need to go for AM5 in the next 5 years! With a new GPU it will do even 1440p well👍🏻
You could get a 5700x3d if you saved a little longer, they're $190 on Aliexpress currently. It competes with AMDs entire non-x3d lineup on AM5.

Oh hey it's my CPU! I bought it back almost 2 years ago as platform upgrade (had a i7 2600 rig which i only used for about a year after upgrading it so much over the years XD) Although i'm still bit bitter on not waiting for cheaper prices as i did buy it new in June '22 buut then again i was considering buying a used R5 3600, but since i heard some people having issues with them i decided to avoid it. Anyway it's still chugging along since then i don't really regret buying it, just regret not waiting a bit so i could've saved bit more money :)
unless the next chip shortage comes along prices will always fall over time so you can always wait and save a bit more so i wouldnt feel bad about it.
That's my cpu too! I don't want a pc that has a power consumption of a whole kitchen appliances turned on. This cpu is perfect when electricity isn't cheap.
Had this since February. The anaemic L3 cache is a bummer but I needed something so I could take the old processor and board off my main rig and put them on my mum's office PC.
This is also great for basic home servers. the monolithic die means no more 30w idle power usage! For a generic desktop where gaming isnt the main focus, its pretty alright. Its a 3600 alternative thats brand new.

Great cpu for my budget and "modern" PC gaming
Built a similar system for a friend late August 23. You could get a new motherboard and processor for just slightly over the £100 mark. Second hand market for AM4 motherboards and Ryzen 2xxx and 3xxx processors was worse than what was shown in the video with prices being higher than the 4xxx series and even similar chips for "new". Intel you were getting hit by lack of availability on the second hand market and new still had the Intel tax applied. While compromised slightly, it's a phenomenal chip for the price.
I'd like to point out that the power consumption of this little guy is absolutly nuts, sits at or below 20w most of the time while pushing +60 frames. I have this CPU in my laptop (5500u) and it's a joy to use, it shred through code compilation without any issues.
Nice dub there at 5:52 Mr. Iceberg Man
This along with the RX6600 have been on my radar for some time now for a budget gaming build Though... The 5500 is only slightly more and has some extra cache too!
Have this in my homelab, pretty nice for something like that, cost me 40 quid and a 20 quid motherboard, sorted for less than any decent intel chip wouldve cost me. Just missing quicksync but i do mostly direct play/stream and the gtx 1050 handles the rest
Nice review👍👏 The cpu didnt get enough love when released, not one good review by major tech channels. But it was soon dirt cheap and a good entry level modern cpu. Nowadays, Ryzen 5000 starts to become too cheap, in Germany the 4500 is 72 vs the 5500 at 90 Euro. 5600x is 100 right now. I upgraded several low end b450 boards with the 5500 which was available here for 90 Euros. This cpu is doing well even with low end (may i say bad?!) vrms.
I was so hyped for this cpu
I got this for 55 bucks with a coupon for my little brothers old budget ryzen 3 build. Got him to stop stuttering in many games and hes super happy with a nice 1080p monitor. Cant beat that for a new chip
I picked up a 8700k with mobo cpu cooler case 32 gb ram for 200 on eBay I added a 4060 and I’m loving it. I’m glad to see it tested in this video.
Intel & Nvidia ..... You really are an dumba ss
I have a 4350g that will do 4.7 ghz no issues, Rather surprised your cores would not budge! Also boards are super picky with what bios you use with these "g" series apu's (i know this is a 4500....but it is a G cpu still) They will work but you get odd cpu turbo behavior etc.
That would lend credibility to the idea that these 4500s were failed 4600G/4650Gs.
I was just about to grab one of these before getting a ryzen 5600x, had a ryzen 4100 which was solid to
Uhh is the msi afterburner wattage count of the cpu broken or the cpu is a efficient beast?
Like these tests, but some results are really strange, I guess it is because of the platform settings. 140fps in wz is what I get with an 10400f with an vega 64 at 1080p basic for instance.
will the ryzen 5 5500 perform much better than the 4500? it has double the cache and its based on zen 3 so i suppose the difference will be bigger between 4500 and 5500 than between 5500 and 5600
Usually, the 4500 and 3600 kinda switch places as the cheapest 6 core CPU. But what i find offensive is that even a Ryzen 3 3100 has PCIe 4.0, but even the 4500 and 5500 only has PCIe 3.0 and the 4500 in particular only has 3.0 x8
I upgraded my gaming pc from an Intel Xeon W-2135 (6core/12threads 4.5 GHz max boost) to an Intel i5-12600K last December. I think I’m starting to regret my decision of going with Intel now that LGA 1700 is officially dead(as in no more new cpus). I feel like I should have gone with a Ryzen 5 7500F. But it would have probably increased the cost of my whole build by $300 at least. I would need an expensive AM5 mobo and DDR5 RAM. My total build cost was $850. I have a RX 6700 XT, i5-12600K, 32GB DDR4 3600, and ASROCK Z690 Extreme mobo, a 1TB SN770 SSD, a Cooler Master 850W 80+Gold rated PSU, a MSI MAG ATX case, and a Thermal Take 240mm AIO(I got this for ONLY $40!!!!). So, was I right to go with the i5-12600K?
Agree with Exile: one of my fav tech channels. Would love to see some 2700X and 3700X tests, wink,wink...
This is my current cpu, it served me well, might upgrade to 5600x since i already have 3060 Ti laying in my room waiting to replace my old rx5600xt.
3:10 they dont have "better memory controllers", they are monolithic and thus dont have constraint in form if infinity fabric that needed to be in 1:1 ratio with memory controller and memory for better performance.
I had the 4600G! if only this was posted earlier lmao, I have a 5700X now
I started with this CPU on my first AM4 board (and a GTX 770 lol) but I upgraded to the 5800X3D and got an RX6800. I bought this CPU quite literally BRAND new when it came out for only $99, and was kind of disappointed in the absolutely horrible reviews it got. I think some reviewers forget that some people can only spend the absolute bare minimum, at this time I was saving money and paying rent for 2 people so I just needed a computer that worked for basic stuff. Considering I already had the GTX 770 and a case, I was plenty happy with spending $250 total to build a computer with a new CPU/MOBO/RAM. That same Motherboard (B450M) powers my 5800X3D+6800 and sits in a new case with an AIO and plenty of RGB. And even though I use it for video editing and photoshop as well, it holds up just fine when compared to how it started lol
I am a bit confused, what did you mean during the Resolve testing that it is unrealistic? Other than not using the GPU.
Sorry, should have clarified. I’ve always tested CPUs at the highest quality preset in Resolve, which on an H264 file can amount to 200+Mb. Recently I’ve been testing mini PCs at a fixed 30Mb output, which is far faster to render. This old method still works fine as a CPU benchmark, but a lower bitrate would be more reflective of real-world render times.

I learned fast what L3 cache was after I bought a Lenovo workstation with 6c/12t xeon which, like the 4500, only has 8mb of L3. Cyberpunk 2.0 update positively REKT my cpu. Now I struggle to stay above 60fps with MEDIUM crowd density… Originally I thought the 2135 Xeon would be a good pairing with my 2080ti. I’m not catastrophically CPU bound, but definitely would have been worth a few extra bucks to find a workstation with a 2145 Xeon with 12mb of L3 and just disable a couple cores. Adding a couple of sticks of server ram to take advantage of the motherboard’s quad channel support also seemed to help, though I don’t think that is directly related to my L3 problem.
disabling the cores would also limit you to said cores' allocated l3 cluster so you'd still be with 8mb usable l3

Can someone explain to me what Iceberg says when he refers to the number 69, and what does that expression mean? Not even youtube's cc generator was able to make it out lol
It's "soixante neuf", the French word for sixty nine. KZheadrs all tend to all say "sixty nine, nice", and I wanted to do something similar but different. It's a reference to a scene in Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, where Sacha Baron-Cohen is talking about French inventions.
@@IcebergTech That's very interesting, thanks for explaining!
I just don't get it, yeah cutting corners, but down to 8 MB of L3, that's just crazy. AMD of all companies seems to get how important L3 is to frame rate stability and percentile lows, yet this is what they produced? If it had 16 MB, it would be passable, better than many Intel cpus, but 8? Yeah, it's budget, but that's just crazy.

Well young man as far as memory goes You might want to try V-Color I actually have a set of 4800Mhz and believe me it is extremely hard to find And I do mean ultra extreme hard to find your best bet would probably be either the 4600 megahertz Or the 4200 megahertz
The Ryzen 5 4500 gets a lot of hate but after its price drop to $70-$80, it's a very solid CPU to buy new at its current pricepoint. Its only real competitor there is the i3-10100, and I'd say the Ryzen is a little better especially in multitasking. Maybe. That low cache might hurt it. There are better CPUs for under $100 though, the i3-12100 and Ryzen 5 5500 come to mind.
Probably the biggest competitor to the R5 4500 is it's predecessor, the R5 3600, which commonly costs about the same price as the 4500, but has 32MB L3 cache instead of 8MB, and PCIe 4.0 support instead of 3.0. At my local shops, it's a €2.50 difference in cost.
2600X . . 6c/12t , 4.25Ghz, 16MB L3 cache and can be had for $65 usd.
It was either going to be you or RandomGaminginHD that did this. Congratulations on beating him to it.
Wll done. I'm curious how it fares against the R5 3600 and R5 5500.
Both faster. 3600 is best because of the cache.
I have one of these with the iGPU. Mind you, the iGPU was worth it
Lol I just watched toasty pc bros make a budget build with this gpu paired with the 5500 xt and it’s honestly a good pair. The 5500 isn’t really held back by the gen 3 lanes and honestly with the right mobo. You could easily upgrade to a 5700x3d or a 5800x3d when they become even more cheaper than now. And hope for some nice competitively priced mid range gpus in the future by Amd, nvidia, and Intel.
🙂 the 5500 XT is like a modern day version of the RX 580 so yes, low tier chip + low tier card
got my r5 4600g series.... it's awesome Upgrade since my old machine came from Core 2 Quad era 😂😂😂😂
Bought my 3600 in 2020 and I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. I say it can last for another 2 generations.
Id like to have seen the 3600 on the performance tables
Seems like that 'Snake oil' runs through all the 'teams' which is a bit of a shame for new builders who dont know these product codenames.
How does this compare to the Ryzen 5 3600x??
You should definitely test ryzen 5500, it is a good balance for both cheap gaming and productivity.
my PC has a Ryzen 5 4500 and an RX 6400 (I didn't know this was a problematic Combination when i Built it 😭) I also have 16 GB of DDR4-2400 Memory too wtff why did I pair the 4500 with the Components that literally choke its Performance😭😭
How about a video on the first I9 by Intel.
And 4500 also draws less than 30w even when fully used by the game
Gaming for three years on my RYZEN 5 Pro 4650G , paired with a XFX RX 6800 16gb, no bottleneck yet.
That cpu most certainly is bottlenecking it. Only 8mb of L3 cache and gen3 support. My 6700xt was bottlenecked with a 5600x,5800x and 5900x. Once I went 5800x3D there was clear improvements in sustaining the FPS. Even at 4k that 6800 is getting held back at times. Wait for a good deal and move up to zen3 5600 or better. I’ve seen them for $80 on the local used market.
@@45eno Thanks , I am running AC Valhalla and RDR2 in 1080 Ultra settings 70 fps +, The CPU runs at 34% under load and the GPU 95-100% under load during gaming. With still an upgrade path to fully enjoy the XFX RX 6800 16gb , I will surely upgrade in the near future to a better CPU for AM4.
this chip is bloody fantastic for a home server
