An essay detailing my experience 6 months after trading in my Geforce RTX 3070 for an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT in my editing & gaming rig.
Part 1: Switching to AMD
• Switching to AMD
Support Iceberg Tech: / icebergtech
After 6 months of daily driving a Radeon RX 6900 XT, I have some thoughts. Does it satisfy my gaming needs? Can it do the job as a video editing workhorse? And am I thinking of switching back?

  • Since I read it so many times here: Undervolt and OC your GPU, always, regardless of the brand. GPUs come way overtuned mostly to make sure most silicon runs stable. They dont want to have cards returned just cause of stability issues so the sell them on high voltage settings at stock. Even my 7900xtx sapphire nitro+ went from 420W stock to 280W on full load (less than a stock 4080) while never crossing 50C°. No performance loss. And Im not into extreme undervolting or overclocking. These are super standard stable settings and Im just amazed how the card performs while being so extremely cool. UV+OC your (somewhat) modern GPU, whatever u have. Literally 0 risk, your GPU lives longer, ur system is cooler and u safe some money too. The worst that can happen is that a game makes your system crash and it goes back to default GPU settings automatically. Just follow a guide on youtube, takes only a few minutes but gets u so many benefits.

    • I have my 6650XT running at 1.150v and 2800mhz, stable as bedrock and draws ~155w. AMD's Adrenalin makes it so easy. Hotspot temp hits 85C after hours of 1440p Cyberpunk. It's actually wild how good AMD is on the price/performance metric.

      @SAVikingSA@SAVikingSAАй бұрын
    • 7900xtx Nitro here also! And i completely agree, this can also be further improved by just capping the framerate, 260w~ D4 at 200fps, even drops below 200w at 150 :-) With a slight undervolt

    • I must be giga unlucky cause my RX 7600 can't even run at 1180 mv while *underclocked* to 2600 mhz. If I change *any* of the settings at all, besides the fan curve, it will crash in-game randomly. Not a great introduction to AMD for me, and I kinda wish I went with a 4060 instead.

      @sudomywoodo@sudomywoodo16 күн бұрын
    • @@sudomywoodo Idk man. Its 165W TDP. The 4060 is 115W TDP. It is a difference but 50 watts is nothing..Even if ur gaming 8 hours a day, 7 days a week on full load its a laughable difference, even in countries with high electricity cost. Maybe someone can offer some stable settings but those cards usually struggle with modern (AAA) games and run already on a super low power usage. And if ur playing indie games or somethign similar they obviously dont run on full load and are super efficient that way..So yeah..

      @Greenalex89@Greenalex8913 күн бұрын
    • @@sudomywoodo sounds to me like a defective card that you could easily get to RMA. The 4060 is a terrible card, there's no scenario where it's a convenient purchase, unless for some reason you absolutely need the best performance out of a low profile card. Your best choice for around 300 USD would've been a 6700 (non-XT), XT or 6750 XT, right now it's hard to catch one at that price.

  • Upgraded from my retired old GTX 750 TI to a RX6600 because of your first video on switching to AMD, so far best upgrade ever, NVIDIA prices are completely unreasonable in Brazil, a performance matching NVIDIA card would be double the price.

    @topster_@topster_2 ай бұрын
    • Can confirm, NVIDIA has its own premium here in brazil, got a friend of mine a 7700xt for about the same price as a 4060, for a card that's competing with the 4060 ti 16gb, i'd say that was a nice deal.

      @DESARD12@DESARD122 ай бұрын
    • It's not just in Brazil if you're on a budget Nvidia is not the way to go anymore, there's too much of a performance gap. It's not that anything under the 70 serie isn't the "best deal possible" now, nah it's rather that it's straight up a bad purchase decision.

    • It's hard to have a conversation online about prices because of how many US people there are with their perspective being completely irrelevant to the rest of the world. In my country the 4070 Super costs the same as the 4070ti, while the 7900XT is that exact same price and is much better at raster and almost equal in RT. Moving down the stack it's the same story, where the only reason to buy Nvidia is for DLSS, because their RT performance isn't above and beyond each price point and of course is a tier below in raster (like you said a 7700XT vs a 4060 is no competition). I'm pretty sure Nvidia is only making money outside the US from prebuilts and business use, and AI/crypto shovel-selling.

    • but, you do know that nvidia supported the 1000 series / maxwell longer than amd supported their RX series/ polaris and vega which came out later than the 1000 series ? support is winding down for the last GCN products (Polaris and Vega). There is a driver for RDNA+Polaris_Vega in the release notes (underneath main driver link), but GCN is probably only getting critical security updates and bug fixes at this point (aside from WDDM driver model updates). While Nvidia still updates maxwell regularly. Yeah they supported polaris/vega for over 7 years but nvidia supported maxwell (gtx700 series) for over 8 years. Now nvidia has cut em off but still supports the 1000 series which is the gpu generation today that is the one that has been out for the longest between both nvidia and AMD, as of today nvidia supports their cards longer back than amd does, the thing amd does that is good is that FSR works for every amd card out there no matter generation, so making a gpu jump based on "amds history in maintaining software features for their old gen" is factually very wrong and not valid at all if you actually look up their respective closures regarding support on various gpu series...

    • Do these driver issues and other problems mainly crop up if you don't do a clean windows install? That's what it seems like. Generally people say AMD and NVIDIA are on basically equal terms with drivers these days. And issues mainly happen when switching from one to the other without completely wiping and reinstalling. For me I just built my first PC and went with AMD. Absolutely zero problems, though it's a completely fresh new build. So I assume most problems occur when switching.

The ray-intersection test has to make several passes for each alpha textured surface to figure out what pixel is transparent or opaque. One of the RT enhancement in Ada Lovelace deals exactly with this problem -- Opacity Micro-Map -- but I don't know if the feature is implemented in this particular game or it just runs faster on RTX hardware.

  • Very solid video, good job! At first I thought "Not again this type of content..." but you raised a lot of very good points! The RX 7000 series endeavor could be interesting from a workstation POV, as there are some major bugs with the AV1 encoder - it can't properly encode resolutions which aren't a multiple of 64x16 pixels, so 1080p comes out as 1082p with a black row of pixels unless masked by the container, which not all containers can do. Among the already widely known idle and video playback power issues. I did my own experiment with switching to AMD with an RX 6600, from a GTX 1660, needless to say after 9 months of using it - and after the issues with RX 7000 started rolling in - I just ended up with a 4070 since the video encoder and power draw are very important to me, unlike the VRAM capacity since I don't play anything latest gen.

The AMD cards also tend to have more VRAM. It really just depends on the feature set you either do or don't want, and a lot of people still don't care about RT or upscaling. They just want a good price to performance card so they can play some games with friends.

With that out of the way, I'm happy with both the CPU and GPU. Depending on the game I'm getting anywhere from 60fps+ to hundreds of fps at High, Ultra or a combination of the two. The 12GB of VRAM is plenty for modern games. That said, BIOS updates 1.2.0.A and 1.2.0.B took some fps away. For example, CP2077 used to run anywhere from high 60s-low 80s fps and now it's hovering around 60 fps in general gameplay. Control ran in the 60s at max settings RT Off pre BIOS update so I assume performance will drop into the 50s.

I've tried third-party apps, but they just don't look or sound as good as Broadcast. I really hope they address that issue. I tend to want to support the underdog, but not at the expense of getting real work done. My current rig is a 12900K, 32GB Ram, and RTX 4070 TI. I'm looking at the 4080 Super or a 7900 XT or XTX. I'll be watching for your upcoming reports. Thanks again for the video. Cheers Rick

  • This channel is underrated. Great video, detailed explanation, nicely done. I am moving from Intel and nVidia to AMD/ATI platform for the 1st time in my life, although there was a 6 months period when I was playing with two R9 270 ATI card in CrossFire mode. Have no money to invest in 4090/4080 or 7900 XTX GPUs, therefore I made conclusion that best value for money (at this moment and for my wallet) is combination of 7800x3d & 7800 XT CPU-GPU combo. P.S. keep up the good work!

  • Radeon Chill can help you with tearing, enabling it will cap hardware side to give only demanded number of frames, which will aswell help with tearing This and eyefinity are 2 things that Radeon nailed and Nvidia wasn't able to make work decently, tbh Radeon Chill can make your Haven benchmark output only 60fps, which was funny when i was testing things

  • The exact same spot in Elden Ring (with RT) is the toughest to run for me too with 4070 Ti. I assume it's the large amount of trees with brances and leaves in view each creating shadows and self shadows. That said the main difference between Low and Max RT seems to be in amount of noise visible and range RT shadows are rendered, and Low was locked 60 fps with other settings maxed, so that's what I'm using. RT shadows make a big difference in some open world places as they change how an area is shadowed.

  • 20:48 is the exact reason why Nvidia has been able to charge whatever they like for their underperforming cards. If someone gave me a free 4090 TI, I'd sell it to another sucker. I had only 4 major issues with my 3 years of using AMD RX 6600. I worked around 2 of them by downgrading the driver until the next update fixed it. One was Windows automatically updating my GPU drivers for some reason, and the last one seems to be an anomaly with my specific card, where Square Enix's GotG runs horribly. I also play all my single-player games on Linux and never had to even worry about a single issue, other than how to overclock my card like I do in Windows... and also GotG running horribly (which is why I think it's an anomaly). Nvidia has completely sold most of the average and the rich gamers on the idea of RTX, frame-gen, etc. This is like believing that you have a chance of having a relationship with an Instagram model that you have crush on, only to end up being the camera operator and a tool to enhance their public perception, just like Nvidia has become one of the highest valued companies. Say what you want about AMD and Intel, they have done more for benefitting the entirety of the consumer computers by publishing open-source firmwares and drivers, and being much cheaper with performance beyond acceptable for the price. I praise and curse them wherever they deserve. I'm able to see which of their actions are beneficial to everyone in the long-term and/or the consumers as a whole, and I hope more people are able to do so too.

    • My first pc was with already used gpu, later my brother changed that gpu to rx 480 4gb (idk if it was used or not) but that pc worked almost 7 years for me(i mainly played competitive/fps games) of course with some issues. Now after it got completely dead amd unusable im planing to build a pc for the first time by my own. Would you recommend rx 6600?

      @fubkegt4964@fubkegt4964Ай бұрын
    • @@fubkegt4964 I have no issues in recommending the RX 6600, just make sure to turn off the automatic driver updates from Windows because it will automatically download and update the GPU drivers to something older than what AMD offers. The Windows drivers lack the latest features and conflicts with the Radeon Software. I don't know why Windows does this. However, RX 6600 is from an older generation at this point. So do the usual research for the GPU that fits your needs for the budget you have.

    • I think game developers are the ones who re pushing RT not really NVIDIA but nevertheless... Anyway, let's say you play on 4k and you want the best out there to keep things maxed out ... What other choices do you have besides 4090 ? In my opinion (and I had a bunch of cards in my life ), 4090 is a league on its own. And for the price of it, you can partially also thank to AMD for that for not having a competitive card to 4090...and giving more reasons to NVIDIA to charge it as much as they want.

      @Need4FPS@Need4FPSАй бұрын
    • @@Need4FPS I'm a reasonable person, I don't see the point in gaming at 4K. And my point still stands for it -- those who want that are being exploited because they can't get 4K out of their head. Those who have the money, don't care about the price. AMD knows that most of their customers are the ones who don't want or can't afford Nvidia's prices, so they don't even bother aiming to compete against 4090.

      @aaronplays_@aaronplays_Ай бұрын
    • 4090 is a luxary product, like a sports car. Nobody needs that much performance, no matter how much they might say it, they just want it, for graphics flexing.@@aaronplays_

    @MasOc3k@MasOc3kАй бұрын
  • I bought an amd gpu (rx 6650 xt) and experienced major issues even after doing DDU stuff and everything, I only managed to fix it by using the "minimal install driver only" install options on the driver installer and actually got the studio driver because the amd drivers were causing blue screens (definitely amd signed DLLs or other files were the causes, I checked the logs and minidumps) and were making my monitor freeze in place when using google chrome, word, blender, photoshop, darktable, lightroom... , 40% of the time not even a driver reset via the shortcut (ctrl-shift-b, I think) would work and I'd just have to turn off my pc using the power button. Going from a gtx 950 2gb which couldn't run davinci resolve at any frame rate to a gtx 1660 super which was amazing at it (1080p60 from a 2017 DSLR), going to an rx 6650 xt was definitely a downgrade (lagging just as you mentioned with any effects, color grading or even text and transitions, barely managed to complete my latest project on it, but it works now, I guess) and for 2.5x the cost it's disappointing, even though I mostly edit photo and not video, I still do it somewhat often. My Blender performance also decreased and the app would just shut down randomly without an error message exactly like in that other guy's video that you mentioned (I got really scared when I found out that was a common issue a few months ago, though it fixed itself with the studio driver), another thing that fixed itself was the google chrome and word issues, word would have flickering text issues and I was struggling so much while writing my 10 page essay about opossums (lol, don't know why that's funny) that I actually learnt LaTeX even though I had a 3 day deadline, that's probably the only other good thing besides the increased gaming performance as I now use LaTeX for everything from physics to math to random ass projects I do that involve equations, I even used LaTeX for my German homework... no game ever crashed though, they all work flawlessly except cs2 on release which was dogshit, it still runs under 90 fps most of the time, but that might be because of my weak old ryzen 5 2600 CPU, but performance this low? going from 260 fps in csgo on a dirty old gtx 950 with the i7 2600 and 300 fps with the ryzen 5 to this sussy mess where it drops below 50 was a definite slap in the face from valve. Not gonna say AMD is trash, not that I had any problems gaming, it was just really shitty for my very mixed "programming, photography, videography, physics, math, random school stuff, 3d rendering" workflow... Also, I experienced crashes in premiere pro and photoshop when clicking on the "pop up buttons that bring up those tutorial menus", though I don't use adobe software anymore (I got a free 1 month sub so I tried the apps, I had prior experience using 2015 versions back in 2019 on an athlon II X2 220 and they were fine, I don't like the new version though, they kind of look like phone apps lol, really unprofessional and cheap, way too hard to use as well). Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to share my experience with AMD.

    • Trust me it's your 2600. I had a 2700 non-x paired with a 2060super, and doing normal things felt like glue after a month of two of a fresh windows install. I upgraded to a 5600 on the same motherboard with a new bios and practically doubled my frames in cpu limited scenarios. CSGO went from 150 fps to 500-600 fps (before cs2 came out). Windows haven't slowed down ever, it's been 2 years since I dropped in the 5600 with a new windows install.

    • Hopefully your experience doesn't discouraging from supporting good competition. There's a reason why Ryzen CPUs occupy 7 out of top 10 sellers on Amazon, and have woken up Intel to compete in the past few years. Yes, Intel and Nvidia have this mindshare that they're stable and reliable, but nothing is 100% unbreakable right?

      @Salty_Nutella@Salty_Nutella2 ай бұрын
    • @@Salty_Nutella I'm not really in the mood for an upgrade as I'll likely be needing a laptop in about 12 months for university. Though the ryzen 5 2600 has been great in csgo running at well above 250 fps all the time, it has been underperforming in cs2. That may be true, but all my other very shitty experiences are 100% GPU related as I've gotten better performance with a gtx 950 in some cases which is around 5x weaker I believe.
