  • It's honestly insane how one singular man changed thousands of children's attitudes and overall opinion towards women. I totally agree with more creators coming out on platforms just like Andrew Tate, it's bound to happen as a result of the fame/money he gained.

    • It was like everyone being surprised Trump got elected. I don't agree with Tate and his views but it's hardly surprising when you push one extreme eventually other extremes boil up and people hide their true beliefs until it's socially acceptable because they don't want to be cancelled. People just don't debate and discuss opinions anymore and it leads to stuff like this from both extremes.

  • I don't think the point of arguing with people like Tate is to convince him any more than the point of a political debate is to convince your opponent. As you said, it's not a conversation between two people because there is an audience, and it is those people you are trying to get to by engaging with people like Tate. His only purpose in the debate is to draw his followers to you, so that you can present your arguments to them, because if he's not there then neither are they.

    • The point is to show and understand both sides regardless if you disagree. But most people seeing this as an us vs them squabble is the problem. They strip it of any nuance or layers to it with out of context clips and quotes and then throw the whole thing away because really they already decided what they thought from what other people told them to think. I dont agree with either but its clear Tate has alot more valuable things to say than a guy who talks at a camera all day with copied opinions heard by everyone.

  • To add to your hyrda analogy earlier. I can say with confidence that only one head was cut off but literal hundreds of heads have already grown at this point. Tate had already set his whole plan into motion of having countless followers make fan accounts that spread his bs on all platforms thus people will still continue to be coaxed into his website. So unless these social media platforms do something nuclear, then nothing has really changed at all.

  • The "third person" argument is very poignant and it's good that you have stated it. The movie "thank you for smoking" has a scene where the main character, a lobbyist for big tobacco, is teaching his son this very point. He does this by having his son discuss with him which ice cream flavor is best and makes a grandstanding argument about freedom of choice. The son remarks that he hasn't actually touched his argument to which the main character states that he's not after him but after "them" as he waves to the empty space where an audience would be seated. The debate podcasts and talking content creators also play into it by having him on. I'm sure they are well aware of their own position so I won't call it foolish, but I'll definitely call it a mistake. Everyone involved knows that there's no actual discussion taking place. Maybe the hosts are at least giving off the impression, but for a discussion you need people who talk. Andrew Tate is not there to talk, he's there to win. He never apologizes, never admits wrong because that's a sign of weakness to him and signals to his targeted demographic that he might just be wrong. Instead everything gets deflected with humor (he's really not that funny at all but whatever) which makes him seem like the more "chill" and "confident" guy to the people he wants to reach, because his demogrpahic is very lost young men that have difficulties with social hierarchy and need a strong figure to hold on to. And while he is not in the slightest bit funny, Andrew Tate is definitely very charismatic. I hadn't heard of this guy and suddenly he was everywhere. The talking content creators are not responsible for his views, which are deplorable and deeply venomous. But they allowed him to share their podium. He wasn't ever going to be reached by anything they said, and he reached people through them that then latch on to him. He played his game to perfection and the people who had him on have allowed him to do so. This is what happens when you play instead of talk. The only winning move in this game is to not allow him to play it. The talking content creators should definitely look at themselves and the position they hold in their sphere of influence. They have tolerated intolerance and allowed it to proliferate because they either arrogantly believed they could stop it, or they callously believed themselves to be devoid of responsibility. I don't think they were naive enough to think they actually could talk. Either way it's a really bad look for them.

  • I think it's interesting that if someone broke copyright terms of service by uploading episodes of a tv show to social media everyone would universally respond with "They deserved it, what did they expect?" yet if someone were to break the same terms of service by promoting open, explicit, irrefutable misogyny then some of those very same people respond with "I don't think it's right to remove him." I think it speaks to how warped perspective has become after being online for such a long time, to where we view the respect of the few mega-corporation overlords as higher than that of half the population on earth. Promoting violent ideals on the basis of uncontrolled characteristics is just a part of the 'marketplace of ideas' but you dare mishandle even a portion of Walt Disney's intellectual property then it's been nice knowing you. The only way we can readdress what to me is a very clear lack of balance is by changing our mindsets through empathy, respect and curiosity to where we value each other at bare minimum the same level at that which we've been taught, forced and reprogrammed to value the ruling corporate overlords. I'd even be optimistic and say our value for other people as a population majority could even, someday surpass that of corporations. But, we still have a long way to go to get anywhere close to that reality, sadly.

  • So glad to see a mention of the Rohingya, even if it's small. I just wrote my thesis on this and knowing how bad it still is, along with the history behind it, it's just so infuriating to see how little coverage there still is. And even when it is mentioned, so little is ever covered. I know you normally do Mogul Mail about issue with creators and social media, but a video on the Rohingya crisis would be very cool to see, something that has more comprehensive information but with a platform behind it. I really want to make a video on it, but as someone who has never actually uploaded a KZhead video, I know that the traction behind it would be small, unless I wanted to try and get Hasan to watch it on stream or something. I doubt you'll see this comment with how many you are, but if you are interested in making a video on the Rohingya and want information from someone who has already spent a year of their life combing through academic papers and doing the heavy lifting, I would be ecstatic to help provide the research for it. It's an issue that has become very important to me since having to write my thesis, especially after having to look at interviews with survivors and look at all of the legal justifications used for it, so seeing it get more traction would be awesome

Deplatforming isn't for combatting disinfo --- it's for combatting abuse. Abuse need not be personal, it can be parasocial. It can also be done via proxy, like, say, through convincing an audience to abuse people for you. This is Andfew Tate's sin --- he abuses women through the proxy of his audience and more directly through the screen. And abuse, even verbal and psychological abuse, can have an incredibly detrimental effect on people's health.

As some of the darker, less moderated corners of the internet demonstrate, that's effectively what you do when you allow abuse to go unchecked. There is no sphere in which speech is truly free, because social pressure and fear of social retribution will always exist as long as we are a social species. (Oh and also Tate is simply a grifter who trafficked minors so that alone is a reason to revoke his internet access completely, since it's a tool he's used to commit literal, actual, honest to god atrocious felonies.)

    • @@mikeholmes7021 personally, i disagree with the idea that “guys are protectors”. However, that idea and equality can coexist. You can believe in that idea and not be sexist, because i believe that your idea of sexism is wrong. Sexism is when one gender is discriminated against or treated harsher than a different gender. Your idea simply states that “physiologically men are stronger than women, and take on a more protective role.” That is not sexist. I would argue that, with that viewpoint, women would fall into a caretaker role (once again, i disagree with your viewpoint, but that is not the point of my comment.) If men and women have their protector-caretaker roles, than everything falls into place. One is not more valuable than the other, and the idea is harmony. Therefore, since in that idea both genders are equal and have equally important roles, its not sexist. However, if you think a protector is more important than a caretaker, or vice versa, that is sexist. In that idea, they are equally as important because caretakers care (nurture) for the family and the protectors, while the protectors also care (protection) for the caretakers and the family. If you believe a protector (man) is more important in his role than a caretaker (woman) you are sexist in that regard. That is the stance that most people with your viewpoint take, so they are labeled as sexist, making the association with your viewpoint “a sexist viewpoint”. I disagree with your viewpoint, because modern life doesn’t agree with such a primal viewpoint. There are single mothers, fathers, parents, orphans, gay people, and a whole bunch of stuff that doesn’t fit into that old-timey view. • i peaked over at my cousin (he’s 12, 7th grader) on his phone, and saw him on tik tok. 3 in a row were andrew taint edits. i had a very serious and lengthy talk with him about what he was consuming. it ended in tears and him unfollowing all the accounts, including taint. i asked him simple questions like “would you want your mom to have a man talking to her like that?” and “why do you feel like what he’s saying is okay?”. he had no real answers that aligned with taint and the likes of him. he’s a child, a little boy, who was simply following what was being fed to him. it’s scary. young and impressionable kids are following what these “red pilled” idiots are saying because it’s presented in a way that it’s correct, that everything they’re saying is fact. i know my little cousin is a good kid, he loves playing with his toddler brother and spends hours sitting with my grandma helping her eat and reminding her he’s her great grandson with a patience and understanding beyond his years. it’s so so scary and sad.

His private programs can’t be monitored and he can’t be banned for that. So taking away his monetization won’t stop him from promoting those programs and making massive amounts of money from it. That’s his only goal. Banning him helps remove the massive platform of advertising and reposting of new inflammatory content he could make. • I think people underestimate the potency of deplatforming. Someone will often not get as much out of the publicity of them being deplatformed than what they were getting from the platform in the first place, despite people’s fears of giving them attention. Just look at times where this has happened entirely unintentionally; how much attention did ninja’s mixer deal get? And how much of that actually translated into people watching him on mixer? It’s not a perfect fix, but putting that barrier between a person and the places where people are most active does help.

    • Is it really that people "underestimate the potency of platforming"? It seems like a bandaid solution to much bigger societal issues and the idea of getting deplatformed for expressing your opinions (regardless of how false or bigoted) is alarming to people. Yes deplatforming Andrew Tate will most likely stamp out his influence but it wont stamp out misogyny. Tate is popular because he expresses views that are appealing to a large group of boys and men. The demand is still there -- the only thing that's gone is the supply. Someone else will come along and fill the void left by Tate -- someone who will be more careful with their messaging as to not get deplatformed so quickly. If people want to get serious about this stuff, we should stop talking about deplatforming and start asking ourselves why so many boys and men are gravitating to someone who thinks women are 2nd class citizens?

Tate has somewhat disrupted the modern social imaginary, both in the real world and the digital. So I think the insight at the end about what a true social sphere is and how to reach true productive discourse is an important thing to think about, rather than saying things to fit together with people.

    • This is the wrong move here, there is a reason why someone like Andrew Tate could grow such an audience in the first place, instead of trying to deal with the underlying problems affecting the community overall they decided to silence the guy but that doesnt change the reality: - There is a power dynamic in relantionships that are more favorable to women than man. - The new age plataform like twitch and only fans allow for women to amass a great level of money, money their male counterpart cant reach. - This doesnt mean it afects everyone but they are people that care about this stuff, and thats creats a toxic interaction where some men feel uncorfotable with.(im not saying its right or wrong) - With the way many people work nowadays one of the ways people can date is trough online dating apps like Tinder where the ratio for male to female interation is not equal. There is more examples and issues to talk but its no wonder someone like Andrew Tate who as charisma and is confident on the BS he speaks could have taken such a massive reach silencing him is just paving the way for others and a quick bandage to something thats been afecting people for a while.

  • One of the primary reasons I feel that social media platform bans seem so inconsistent or vague is that people will always try to dance around whatever line in the sand is made. If a platform states that you cant promote misogynistic ideals and even lay out what exactly is misogynistic, people will find some way to try to circumvent that rule. For example you could frame a question in a way to generate a misogynistic response without actually saying anything, or continuously sprinkle in small messages that are meant to reinforce a misogynistic mindset. Neither is breaking the rule because you aren't explicitly stating anything misogynistic, but the effects are there, and no amount of additional rules are going to stop them from trying to push these boundaries. Its a tough trade off, because the more you're transparent with your rules, the more these guys are able to dance around it, and the more you make the rules vague, the easier it is to justify these bans but you add frustration that honest creators have to deal with.

  • I think it’d be smart for these sites to have a hard set of guidelines which determine what is acceptable on the site and what isn’t. If it’s found that someone like Andrew Tates behavior is unacceptable they should adjust the guidelines, if he’s not already going against them, and warn him that if he breaks the new set guidelines he will be suspended or banned. This would fix the inconsistency in bans because it would guarantee that creators like Andrew Tate are not able to be banned because of emotional execs or something of the sort. It’s simply unfair to ban people for past tweets or posts that have not been brought to the creators attention that it’s breached some policy (new or old). The current system just lacks professionalism and consistency which makes it hard for creators to judge what is and isn’t ok.

  • Debating Tate publicly isn’t for him, it’s for the people listening that might be having similar ideas but aren’t as committed to it. You have to show people the flaws in the logic, not just say he’s bad and wrong. You are never gonna end sexism is one swoop, it’s about steadily showing people their way of thinking is outdated and has no merit.
