When Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a second less visible battle got underway.
Armies of vigilante cyber hackers on both sides have caused chaos - taking down websites, stealing private data and hijacking broadcasts.
The BBC’s Cyber Correspondent, Joe Tidy travels to Ukraine to speak to those fighting in the cyberwar.
He discovers that the conflict has blurred the lines between cyber military and cyber criminal activity.

Everyones overlooking the fact that when your fighting for your life, or your existence, an underdog has to go to any extreme inorder to survive. All is fair in love and war. Only the combatant with the upper hand talks about rules of war. The losing opponent has to consider more radical methods inorder to even the balance. you might believe in the myth of the fair fight while the other guy believes in winning at any cost. As your desperation increases, your willingness to ignore societal norms increases. Ukraine is fighting a traditional war and using guerilla warfare tactics. As the saying goes, its better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6.
Yes thats right, everyone is overlooking such hot takes and unique perspectives. Everyone other than you of course. Well done.
Obviously a fatmerican dunce the only solution to any problem is war crimes.

the way the journalist kept saying "this is serious criminal activity" what your doing just made me sick, what a stupid observation for them to answer when they are at war.
Yes and no. Russian hackers have taken down our hospital systems - and those in the UK as well - [despite us having a president and wife who have openly supported Russia although they are somewhat alone in that] and put lives at risk IN A COUNTRY WHICH IS NEUTRAL and NOT helping Ukraine [or Russia]. That is criminal. Ukrainian hackers taking down the ticket machines for the Russian trains - possibly the same ones all those Russians used to flee first to Finland and then on to the US - isn't criminal and it isn't harming/killing anyone. I suspect that when Ukraine has won those same hackers won't go on to become cyber criminals but will instead find ''proper'' jobs and help to rebuild their country. I also suspect that when Russia has lost their hackers will continue on with their criminal ways and continue to try and make life for the rest of the world as bad as theirs now are. And if they can extort money at the same time then they will continue to do that as well. Big difference is in the character of the two country's inhabitants and one group of people are generally law abiding [always the exception but I'm talking generalisations] and the others aren't.
That American hacker needs to be shipped to Russia. I’m sure he will love it there.
He'd be on the front line in no time as he's a) not ethnic Russian and b) the right age.
Why don't you go 🔔end

Love how the journalist equates civilian cyber work in an invaded Ukraine with criminality 🙄 They have the right to do WHATEVER it takes to secure themselves and throw out the Russian hoarde 🇺🇦💪🏻
The interviewer was either pro Russian, or he was playing Devils Advocate with making comments that appear to make these hero's look like they are criminals for striking back at RuSSia, almost appeared like the interviewer was working for RT1 instead of the BBC.

At this point pretty much every nation needs its own Cyber military branch I think the main reason that so many countries like Russia prefer to wage war online is because the United States has been the military that no one can hope to beat in a straight up fight for decades When a military rises to that level of dominance, the only thing that you can do is come at it from a different angle Russia's military budget is somewhere between $43-$60 billion US Compared to the United States $800+ annual military budget Though the United States has fallen to the point that I think we spend more on military than the next 8 countries combined It use to be the next 11 countries China, Japan, Poland and others are starting to spend a lot more mostly because of Russia Personally, I'm not to worried about Poland and Japan right now Which leaves cheap cyber attacks being the weapon of choice for a lot of nations

I couldn’t begin to wrap my head around a computer 💻
Very interesting.
In general, the IT army works now and those who wish can join at different levels. From your own participation, to providing the power of your computer for DDOS attacks. For example, I don't understand all this, so I just let my computers be used for DDOS. :)
And that is where problem starts... you see there are a good way of fighting a battle and a bad way of doing so ... military personnel have rules of engagement and laws, civilians on the other hand may implement their own tactics on behalf of military and thats where all the problem starts, it blurs the line between civilian and military personnel, uncontrolled actions involving civilians, will only make worse the situation between Russia and Ukraine... ''You violate rules of engagement'', ''you face the consequences!'', simple rule!
@@rostyslavadamchuk3300 Sorry, but... You are flying in blue clouds. I can understand that because you are far away. This is a war for the total destruction of my people. Pay attention to the word "people". I have not singled out the military or civilians here.
