Repairing a BIG Mining Truck Cylinder Barrel | Part 1 | Machining & Welding
We've got a cylinder barrel in to repair off a BIG Mining Haul truck! This is the hoist cylinder barrel off a Caterpillar 789 Mining haul truck and the inside has been damaged. In this part 1 video we show the step by step process of disassembling the damaged cylinder barrel and start machining up the new barrel. First is machining off the barrel end and head flange. We then start machining up the new cylinder barrel by turning down one end to fit the head flange. The head flange is then installed with an interference fit before dual shield welding the head flange onto the new barrel. Stay tuned for Part 2 where we finish machining, honing and welding the new barrel!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Have a bonza weekend guys!
Wishing the Whole Gang at CEE Australia a wonderful Friday night and Weekend..... As always, we love every thing you do and the information you let us in on..... Karen, Kurtis and of course Homeless, you are a Fantastic Team....... Best Wishes from the other 'Sunshine State' Paul Brown
Man. It's 1am on Friday here :( And now I have to stay up for 37min to watch an awesome video........ :D :D :D :D
Hi I am from India,,the sequence of your working procedures is absolutely correct and with good techniques ,,,I suggest you ,,,and if possible ,,painting work is done means after the completion in every process ,,videos looks too good with FIVE STARS BRO....🌟👍👍👍👍👍👍 ....
What an absolutely beautiful b-roll this week, you have outdone yourselves 😂 🐦⬛
Kurtis, the bird whisperer and master machinist. You two make a great team.
My bird doesn't even talk to me as much as CEE's resident flying poop machines!
@@DogSerious Would hate to think if it was was a lyre bird, omg the things that bird would be chirping 😂😂😂😂
You beat me to it ;)
30:42 ...and magician
Like Ace Ventura when he gets home... Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh 🐦🕊️🐦🕊️🐦🕊️
Great combination of diagnostics, order of process, machining and welding, all with top notch camera work. Splice with dog, birds, out-takes and Karen's laughter: winning combo.
Because the barrel is ruined to the point that re-honing would thin the walls too much, but the ends are still useable, and that much professionally shaped metal is expensive.@@karlwithak.
Dude, watching that head flange drop on all smooth and those two edges match up spot on was so insanely satisfying. Great work as always!
you ain’t lying, because i was thinking the exact same thing
I love how Karen incorporates the vehicles/machinery these repairs are from/for. Great editing/camera work along with your machining skillset is a win!
Australia is very proud of you both.
cheers mate!!
I would be a very happy customer too, knowing repairs are in the best hands in Oz!
Alaska also!
3 of them! don't forget Homeless!
Kurtis/Karen.... I don't know if you all are tracking your metrics... but you released this video less than 18 minutes ago and you've already acquired 6k views and just under 80 comments. These are signs that you're on the right track. Congratulations on being the absolute legends that you truly are... from here on the West Coast of the US at midnight. Yes, we stay up just to see what you folks are releasing next. Well done.
Hey thanks for watching, I like to keep an eye on the metrics/analytics to see where things can be improved. We have so much appreciation and gratitude for our community and viewers, wouldn't be here without you all! 🥰 Karen
And Kurtis would be a slightly lesser KZhead Star without fantastic content from Kiwi Karen the enforcer
Considering I used to start work @ 11 pm, staying up to midnight is fine for me and I can walk my dog before or after a CEE video
Not Just the US but the Philippines too.
Not just the Philippines, but the Brasil 😉
Appreciate the annotated, in-video explanations, along Safety Officer breaks. So relaxing to watch after a stressful, hot day at work. No annoyances on this channel. You show the work, the process. Hope you realize how unique you two are!
Thank you for the great comment!
@@CuttingEdgeEngineeringtrue for sure! You guys are on the same level as Primitive Technology. Even though this his filled with commentary, but it's all so very honest and intrinsic.
What I love best is the outtake where you show where you dump the old cylinder into the trash bin. This is not a repair. It is a rebuild.
the best thing about not being at work is watching someone else work. Makes me feel like I'm sitting down more than just normal sitting down
Sitting here in Texas, America at 2:10 a.m. wondering when the C.E.E. Professional Machinist is gonna release another video, well, look no further, here it is!👍👍
I work in a factory in the US that makes those exact same cylinders, I just started watching your vids about a week ago, wild to see one in your shop. It's really amazing to see 1 man doing the whole process - subbing for part 2
That fit up of the interference for the head flange was awesome
you know it's been a busy week when the video goes out and I'm thinking "huh, pretty sure it was friday like 2 days ago...". Good shit as always guys!
Thanks for the little context video of where the cylinder sits, it really helps!
For fugg sake dude, I’ve never thought one man can handle so big parts repairs. It’s so interesting to watch!
I have been running lathes off and on since 1964 and I can certainly say that the lathe in this video is the crown jewel of all of them. And you Sir, set the standard for all YT machinists. This is not flattery, it is an educated observation from an old man that is a prick. Art from Ohio
That's my first CEE video that's I was waiting for! Because I've just discovered the channel earlier this week. Been binge watching since then xd
You won't be disappointed 👍
hey mate thanks for waiting & watching! We hope you enjoy our new video. Cheers 👍
@@misenplace8442 dude, I know that. My head blew up when I watched q&a and found out that Curtis and Karen are the only two people working there. Dude is unbelievable and Karen has great skills as well;) and Homie ❤️
Love it when you guys install the "Homie Cam". The close-up makes Homeless sound like the Tasmanian Devil (from Looney Tunes). Another great vid Kurtis and Karen. Thanks.
After watching the hard work that goes into creating and maintaining machines like this, I understand why my old man always said that the stock market is the closest man has gotten yet to alchemy. Creating stupendous amounts of money out of thin air. Humanity always wanted it easy
Hahaha. This is my favorite comment!
Not so fast. I have done my fair bit of prospecting in there. Lost over $30,000. I can conclusively say that it didn’t PAN OUT well for me :)
Lol. Tell that to the Warren Buffet’s and Charlie Munger’s. Actually some others are good. Cathy Wood predicted a rise in oil prices due to the Ukraine situation. My own adviser Mary Elizabeth Huxley also predicted that precious metals will go up during a recession after the pandemic. My portfolio has grown over $400,000 in 8 months so I guess some are better at prospecting stocks than others
Sounds great. I can’t get into Warren’s por, tfolio anyway to see how he does it. Does she attend to individual clients or is she institutional
She’s as personal as it can get. Worked in Merrill Lynch and manages private por, tfolios. She’s the best bet if you are looking for something personal. I can't drop her number here but she has a public cntact website where you can reach her
That barrel looks so small on the dump truck, but it's so big up close! Crazy!
This is another sample of outstanding problem solving and videography. I am continually impressed with your examination and planning to resolve repair issues. I especially enjoy the videography closeups and slow motion imaging of the work in progress. As long as I can receive your channel video, I will be there watching. Your ID of Cutting Edge Engineering is precisely what your do.
hey mate thanks for taking time to share such a positive comment we really appreciate that
You are quite welcome. I really like your channel!
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 !
Von mir auch!
Hier auch☺️
Auch von mir
...that's nice...
And Canada
Homey-Cam never gets old.😃
Now we can watch Homie-Cam. Good Shit! Great videos guys and girls! Thomas, Mississippi, USA!!!
Damn, he's so good! When Kurtiss slipped that heated head on the end of the cylinder with a perfect fit, I went "wow!" Great video, Karen!
Kurtis, you are an incredibly good bird trainer. If you can teach them to machine and weld, (might give a whole new meaning to the term "bird shit" welding), Homey can check the work quality and job safety. Karen and yourself can retire to a life of leisure. Great stuff mate, look forward to part 2.
Talk about a 5 star comment there ya go we got one....🤣
Pinned comment 😂
Disney Princess Engineering...
Guys. Honestly, this might be the best video you have ever made.
Your dog seems so well behaved and fun. Good job training him. He is a ball of chaotic good.
Good morning Karen! Good morning safety officer! Good morning disney princess! 😀😀😀😀 (a very talented princess)
Kurtis the mentors in your career would be proud of what skills you show to the world. Karen your video skills are to be admired and the addition of video info is cool as it is on point 👌👍
I reckon Kurtis is mostly self taught.
Here, hear! 🤘
Love the SLO-MO CHIP CAM, WONDERFUL CAMERA & EDITING 👍
It's great to see Homey's point of view.
As usual my Friday fix from CEE. Now I can wear my CEE Bucket Hat with pride over the promising weekend weather here in Melbourne.
hey mate thanks so much for your support!
The satisfying barrel roll off the fork tines made my week. You three are awesome 😎
My favourite channel. So relaxing to watch a craftsman at work.
Eagerly awaiting part 2.
Friday! Tomorrow is moving day... got to see my CEE video before packing up my PC! Nice work with the Homey cam! Feeding the birds was cool too! No beers for me tonight! 🍺 Have to wait till tomorrow night after all is moved. 🍺🍺 Have a great weekend!
hey mate hope the move is stress free for you!
I love the Homie cam! You could start a whole channel on that alone! Homie 24/7, all homie, all the time!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The poor Go Pro wouldn't be able to handle it 😅
Yeah, and if he ever got the Gopro off of himself, he would probably eat it. Or leave it in little bits! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
He like the Bob Ross of machining. Sometimes i fall asleep listening to these videos.
Homey is the best part of my CEE day. Thanks Curtis!
Hi Kurtis, my dad and I watch your guys videos on Friday nights when I go there for dinner. He is an architect and I am a builder. We're both continuely amazed that this field of work exists and the massive sizes of material you work with. We both are really intrigued to know your background and how you have worked your way to now, with the vast knowledge you possess! And clearly the skill to produce such high quality workmanship
Hey mate & dad! Glad you both enjoy watching the videos. You might like to check out 'Our first Q&A' video I share a bit about my background and starting the business. 😎👍
Same here; how does a fairly young guy know how to seemingly so confidently tackle all these things, and do them so well. Very impressive.
I never knew that these cylinder were made in pieces. I thought they were cast in one whole piece!
The head flange and barrel is machined out of 1 piece and then the eye is welded on
They have to be. If they were cast in one piece, a machine such as that (the dump truck) wouldn't cost ~3mill, but 5 or more. Gotta save costs where you can with these because otherwise, nobody would buy them. There's also benefits in the strength of the finite item, giving each component the best metal to exist with. Kinda like car rear axles. They're also made from cast components and either extruded (commonly known as non-seam tubing) or welded tubes. There's also the considerations of the manufacturer's cost for casting a component as large, in the required quantities to sustain the industry. They'd have to cast 20 of these every few weeks (if not more) to have enough to pass around the globe... they'd be throwing money out of the house. There's many, many reasons behind it. :)
I find it absolutely incredible that only 2 of those hydraulic rams lift the tipper and the load.
@@carenbarnet378 Excellent observation you set me thinking more about it myself. That must be some kind of flow and pressure and make a mess if a line breaks!!
@@j81851my dad was walking near a smaller excavator when a line popped, it covered everything in about a 30 foot radius with a good layer of hydraulic oil, I can't imagine the mess a line feeding this big of a cylinder would make
CEE is the GOLD Standard for you tube machining channels. I learn something every video. Great video. As usual. Thank you.
i would have to say that CEE is the Platinum standard
Hello, Kurtis, Karen and Homeless, my wife watches the videos too and she said you had a new lathe. I looked and told her nope same one you had. As we watched I commented on how the ends had to be removed she said it was easy with good equipment. I told her no, craftsmanship was the key. A good man or woman knowledgeable with marginal tools is still better than a jury rigger with the best tools.
Great video, and as always, the "go pro pooch" doesn't disappoint! He must give those cameras a real workout. Careful with George and his buddies as birds do essentially two things in life: eat and poop, everywhere.! I like how the outtakes show you guys laughing at mistakes and frustrations. Keep it up!
Imagine how much work Kurtis could get done if he didn't keep flubbing his lines or playing with the animals
HomelessCam is outstanding! Well done!
The clock is an awesome idea to show the time you take to do these jobs.
Все ваши видео очень нравятся! У вас хороший канал и самое главное очень полезный! Спасибо вам за вашу работу и отдельное спасибо Карен за съëмку,очень хорошая операторская работа! Привет из России.
Looking forward to the honing steps!
Yes, but will it be the Sunnen or Delapena Vertical ? Please let it be the Delapena !🤞
Had I known about this career opportunity when I was younger I would have definitely pursued it. What a rewarding job.
Loved how smoothly the head flange fit on after heating it up
*Cutting Edge Engineering Australia* Bravo well done, always a pleasure to watch. Thank-you for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
Love the slomo, looks so cool watching the chips build up then fall.
Rather satisfying, I agree.
Australia is very proud of you both.. Australia is very proud of you both..
I really enjoyed the clock during the welding! It was great to see the time pass during the parts that were fast forwarded
I love Fridays. Home office, I turn on YT, drink my morning tea and watch another great Homey video from Karen. The guy in background does a good job too.
That's Karl
Another great video. I had been wondering about the overhead crane and thinking about how smooth it seems to work. Thanks for the shot of it in the video. Have a safe and wonderful week
They say that we are part of a computer simulation. After the last video I thought wouldn‘t it be nice if Kurtis would show the crane and the extend of the reach that seems to span the whole shop area. And here it comes? And I just thought it, didn‘t even speak it out loud for Siri to hear! If I have any other questions I‘ll just think of them harder in the future. Thanks for the immediate reaction.
Homeless is such a cool dog! Lucky parents!!
Amazing how you tame those birds. Nice work on the barrel. You make it look so easy. And we can't forget the camera lady. Nice job Karen!
As soon as you said it was an un-honed barrel I got excited, I love watching the honing process. Will have to wait till next week though.
Thanks Karen and Kurtis. Excellent videography as always, Karen 😊
Amazing how the lift straps are able to jump onto the forklift forks by themselves. 😉
Great customer service, hope they realise your quality of work. Great camera and direction Karen 👌 Thanks for sharing
Just tossing this out there...if it doesn't rust almost immediately or if you can treat it so it doesn't, adding a bag of swarf to you store is an idea. And I LOVE Hommie cam!
I always enjoy these videos, you made an old man's day!!
i'm a engineer and love seeing you working, it is f****** masterclass on how i should project my own parts. Keep the good work!
hello, 1 month into the apprenticeship, its going well. i worked on something very similar to this today. prep for NDT and cleaning a few. love the content keep it up.
The confidence in your ability you must have to be able to cut a piece of equipment up like that is inspiring
Karen's camera work really is amazing
Thank you 🥰
Homie Camera activated! AWESOME!
As always, a great video! Aside from the excellence in machining and welding, the best is in the out-takes, with Kurtis the Disney Princess communing with his flock! 😀
Dziękuję że dzielisz się swoją wiedzą i doświadczeniem. You are a very smart and clever guy. Applause for a well-edited video
Hey mate, thank you so much for your support! We appreciate it! Cheers, Kurtis, Karen & Homey👌
MORE THAN ANY PRECIOUS METAL, THE HARDEST THING TO FIND IN LIFE IS A GOOD WOMAN. AND YOU HAVE ONE THAT'S WORTH HER WEIGHT IN GOLD , CHERISH HER WHIT VERY ONCE OF YOUR BEEN . YOU 2 ARE SO HAPPY TOGETHER KEEP THAT WAY . LOVE ROCKY AND CIRO
I am so addicted to your channel and the quality of work you produce that it almost makes me wanna jump on a plane and come work for you for nothing. Even if i just end up playing with the adorable staffie you have.
Seriously, this is the only channel I subscribe to and look forward to seeing on a weekly basis. I even rewatch videos! LOL… I appreciate the content, quality, commentary, and professionalism of the videos! Cheers from America!!!
hey mate thanks very much for subscribing and supporting, glad you enjoy the vids
Me too. The only channel I watch religiously when a new vid drops!
Cheers Karen and Kurtis. Hope homey has had a great birthday week. A dog at our house this week just lost her squeaky chicken in the bush, so methinks a visit to get a few more and I'm going to send one homey's way for a belated birthday present. Yous are a great team. Hope you have a lovely weekend.
I have no training in your field of expertise, none at all. However, the way that you explain where the part fits, how it functions, what possibly caused the damage and the steps and procedures to repair enables me to follow with understanding. This is, ‘so good’.
You should really sign up for patrion, I not only got to watch this video on Wednesday but it was also 5 minuts longer with all of the extra stuff in it! Thank you guys for sharing all of your hard work!
Been really enjoying the videos. It’s also a joy to see your dog living his best life. Keep the videos coming. Look forward to the next projects.
My favorite Friday nights viewing. Love these big cylinder repairs. 👍
Thanks for the video. Helps calm down my anxiety. Its relaxing watching a master craftsman.
The Dogcam works surprizingly well!
This channel was one of the inspirations to get me into welding and maching school.
Hey mate that's really awesome, all the best with your journey!
I never fail to learn something new after watching one of your videos. Thank you, and have a great rest of your evening, Curtis and karen!
You should learn something about butcher birds? They are called butcher birds, because that will butcher anything, pretty quickly. Hence the hooked beak for tearing into the flesh of other birds and animals.
Unsung hero: the overhead crane.
The relationship with Jeorge and "friends" is beatiful. But is not a distraction from your fine work on metal and video. We are greateful for you sharing.
That cylinder looks small on the truck, huge by itself. Just shows how big the 789 really is. Love you're show!
Timing of your uploads is just perfect for me in Europe. When I come to work it's always ready to watch. Professionally I work with metal but on a much smaller scale, dental crowns and bridges ;) but I love big boy toys! Phenomenal content, always enjoying, love both of you legends and the goodest of bois.
Can’t wait for the paint job
This is slowly becoming a nature channel and I love it
i think this is the first time ive ever seen a cradle used to ship n hold one of these cylinders, YAY homie cam an squeak squeaks! kurtis the new disney icon HAHAHAHA
Another great video as always from kurtis with amazing editing from Karen as ever
Love the clock. It's amazing how steady the camera is when the dog is running. Keep it up Clay in Dallas Texas
Part 2? Dam, I was waiting for the finish product. You feed him and he will always be around!
Love watching how you work with the crane - its like having another, stronger person helping in the shop. At a push, I suspect it could brew a coffee! Thanks to you both for the videos.
I'm not a machinist but find your work fascinating.
Those birds recognize good people, that's for sure.
omg when that head flange went on. UNF!!! So flush!!! That's the shit I'm here for, man! lol
