The tournament takes place for the 143rd time and is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. Last year, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Poland's Iga Swiatek claimed the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first US Open title, with Alcaraz winning his first Grand Slam title and Swiatek winning her third Grand Slam title. This year, at the US Open, we’re set for another historic tournament as the world’s best tennis players head to New York. • Thiem has been having the stomach problems for several weeks now. This is not normal. I hope it's not something serious, he should get a thorough check. He had long-term digestive problems as a young player which delayed his breakthrough on tour. Such a unique, phenomenal player, and just can't get a break. When his chronically sore foot got OK in 2021, he broke his wrist, and two years later, he's still sick.

    • I'm still happy he's won a slam and masters, given us many matches over the years to enjoy, and pushed the big 3 very hard! So given all his recent struggles, I think he should look at everything he does from this point on as a bonus. It will be that much sweeter when he makes another breakthrough, I truly believe he's got it in him :) time will tell!

    • He's not dealing with injuries, the wrist was already OK last year. But he's often sick, he has some (possibly chronic) health problems. Besides, he'll turn 30 on Sunday, and as for "already" having injuries at his age, guys like Alcaraz have more frequent injuries already at 20. Professional tennis players are simply injured all the time, it's a brutal sport.

  • every time a player withdraws from a match the commentators say for the other player "certainly not the way he would like to win the match". I'm sure any player who has won a match this way would prefer to go all the way to a crippling five setter instead of going back to his hotel with a one set win, get some rest and replete his tank until the next game. I'm sure every professional who competes for thousands or million dollar prizes, deep down in his heart, will always choose the dignified, knight's way instead of the *efficient* way to move ahead on the tournament. Yeah right...

    • He had a two year issue with his elbow in 2016-2018. His 2017 season was essentially a write off because of it but he had success before and after it in 2016 and 2018 but it impacted him for 8 slams. Its the reason Roger was able to win 3 slams during that period. Not a chance Roger beats him at the Australian open.
