The Director's Chair: How to Write and Direct a Movie like Christopher Nolan ►► bit.ly/2JNbfLN
Understanding how Christopher Nolan movies work so well is to understand more than cinema or the ability to film in Imax. You’ve watched Interstellar, Insomnia, Dunkirk, and The Dark Knight Trilogy (Batman), and love the cinematic storytelling from this prolific director and filmmaker in general. It doesn’t hurt when you have a Hans Zimmer score too. But what's it like actually being in the Director's chair?
Christopher Nolan movies like Memento and The Prestige reminds us, filmmakers, what cinema is all about, and film directing and editing has rarely been so good. Maybe you think best Christopher Nolan movies have Tom Hardy or Christian Bale in them - but the Dark Knight Rises movie had both… so that sort of disproves that theory.
Directing films and cinema like Christopher Nolan takes years or practice and research into filmmaking. That’s why Christopher Nolan movies can take you on a deep journey, and this video essay will show you how he keeps everything consistent in his films.
If you love Christopher Nolan movies, don’t write another page or direct another scene until you’ve seen our video essay. You don’t need a big Imax cinema to be able to make a film like Christopher Nolan. All you need is a good mind and hard work.
Christopher Nolan editing techniques also come into play, so learn how he directs a movie that will eventually be cut together in a somewhat unconventional manner.
The end result: You will know how to direct a movie like Christopher Nolan, and perhaps you will direct the next Dark Knight trilogy or Interstellar.
Enter the Director's chair to find out exactly how Christopher Nolan directs and edits his movies.

What are some of your favorite filmmaking techniques from Christopher Nolan? 👇👇
For me, I think it's the non-linear storytelling. It's because I love how Christopher Nolan told the story in Memento. It is just gripping as I'm watching it multiple times.

I'd say Interstellar is more emotional, due to the core of the film being about the relationship between himself and his daughter, but Blade Runner is up there. + 2049 is possibly the most visually stunning film of all time
Ben Jauncey the cinematography in blade runner 2049 is breath taken lord Jesus
No.
@@benjaunceyyy I would agree with you, but the original Blade Runner had the superior soundtrack. It's amazing!
That's a bit of a stretch. I'd call it the most intricate and fascinating sci fi but not emotional. There are some more emotional sci fi movies like Children of Men, A.I., Solaris, (1970s version), and Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind.
I must have watched over 2000 movies. And I would call this man a true cinematic genuis. Truly a master at his craft. So lucky to have him (and Hans Zimmer) in my lifetime!
That’s a gross over exaggeration, you haven’t seen anything.
@@squidlove749 Why do you think that? I grew up in a family that watched movies like all the time. Now that I live by myself me and my friends watch movies almost every day. I study film at school and I want to become an editor/director one day, so yeah, 2000 is pretty realistic for me. Believe what you believe man, don't be a dick about it though.
elmertjee because I know what it looks like when a person sees a lot of movies, I watch a lot of movies. If you really think Nolan is a true cinematic genius, then you haven’t seen 2000 movies.
James Mendez So who are your top directors/producers?
TheRealDyscyples producers are just the business aspect, I don’t care as much about producers because the better directors take helm of their own projects and make masterworks of film. That being said, it’s Kubrick, Bergman, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Lynch, Ozu, Fellini, Welles, and those are just on the upper echelon of filmmakers, while I’m not going to undermine Nolan’s talent, there are tons of filmmakers above him, better than him, and you can’t watch 2000 films and say Nolan is a genius, not with the standards that many before him have set that Nolan isn’t close to reaching, that no filmmaker today is close to reaching, there’s a whole bar below that the best of the best are reaching before they could ever reach that of the old masters.

@Cosmonaut. Hills How do you think Christopher Nolan's work compares to Jonathan Nolan?
@Cosmonaut. Hills Jonathan is more of a writer with twist ideas and love for foreshadowing but the few episodes he directed for PoI and Westworld were pretty cool. I think they're both great writers because Chris saw potential in Memento story, wrote Inception, Dunkirk & Tenet and always pushes the limits in practical stunts while Jonathan wrote most of TDK in 2005 and original Interstellar script, so no need to sayChris is not a writer too.

This is probably the best video on KZhead I have seen in 10 years.
nolan’s movies can’t be appreciated the same way as others can. appreciating a nolan film is appreciating the process and genius behind the film more than the film itself
Exactly what I was thinking. His movies always has that realism aura, which shines separately among other movies. I couldn't put it in words, and that's exactly what a cinema is about.
Christopher Nolan has found scenes shot on this planet that are physically present that we're not aware of and has made them either Earthbound or otherworldly in a dream that we witness on screen. He's taking us around the world we thought we knew, and showing us we didn't know it at all!
And he hates CGI.
Following, memento and Insomnia are Nolan's films that I constantly watch over and over again and find something new every time. The science in his film making and story telling is so immersive

I have noticed this concept of the tone always peaking in Hans Zimmer's music ( the mole, no time for caution) and now that I've seen Nolan talk about it, I am pretty sure they sit and make sure the story telling and music match this theme of continuously rising tone. They are such gems. Have huge respect for both of them. And now Ramin Djawadi!!
I find it funny that Christopher Nolan was able to work with Al Pacino in his third feature film while Martin Scorsese had to wait until his 25th film. What a world?
John Not Real Name I can’t tell, are you implying that this shows Nolan is better than Scorsese 😂 Scorsese could’ve easily got Pacino in the past and btw, Insomnia is a Hollywood film that Nolan was signed on to, he didn’t have to persuade Al Pacino because the studio probably signed him on before Nolan.
@@lejam0771 Mate I adore both filmmakers and I am aware of all that. I am just writing it is strange that this happened.
John Not Real Name oh right fair enough. But as I say Al Pacino being in the movie was nothing to do with Nolan. I fell in love with Nolan's work the moment I saw The Prestige - I knew there was something different about this guy. The way he present the thought in interstellar without green screen , any CGI is fabulous. And more you watch ,more clarity comes
This is getting added to my lecture on perspective-based composition. I love a director who thinks first about *where* the camera should be.

Why do you think people love stories about the chosen one? Or why do some people even idolize superheros. Or even why do people looove WWE superstars? The need for a hero is installed within our souls. And writers, comic book artists, directors have exploited that need for profit. Their is nothing wrong with loving them thou.. But i tell you😭 their is a Real hero who installed that need in your soul in the first place. Jesus christ left his throne in heaven and came to the world he taught he healed people then he was humbled betrayed humiliated killed and on the third day he rose from the dead. As God's sacrifice for our sins. If you humbly honestly pray repent for all your sins(read the10 commandments) and believe/trust that Jesus did all that for you ..You will be saved..Jesus saves you from hell fire🔥.. and gives you eternal life in heaven. This might be the last time you read the gospel..he is coming back soon not as the sacrificed lamb of God🐑 but as the king of the universe🤴 with fire in his eyes🔥. the Judge of all mankind. In some cases, like memento, the secret is dropping the screenplay all over the floor, putting things in random order, and hoping it makes sense. Nothing is a mistake, it's a feature!
