He began making films at age seven. He was particularly influenced by 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Star Wars (1977). From the age of eleven, he aspired to be a professional filmmaker. In 1998 Nolan directed his first feature, Following, which he personally funded and filmed with friends. He gained considerable attention for his second feature Memento. He found further popular and critical success with The Dark Knight Trilogy. His ten films have grossed over US$4.7 billion worldwide and garnered a total of 34 Oscar nominations and ten wins. He's an advocate for film preservation and the continued availability of film stock. He runs the production company Syncopy Inc. with his wife Emma Thomas. He's one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of the 21st century.

  • The biggest idea is "just start." Kind of a "to learn to swim, get in the water and swim. Sink. Do it again, and start. Close second is rule 4: focus on audience. What does the client/customer need/want. Not what YOU want.

  • I love the questions at the end. I'm a ghostwriter who writes for people who want to self publish. However I'd love to gain experience working with a traditional publishing company. I've been saying I was going to start just by emailing small presses and offering my editing services -- but I always convince myself not to do it... So now I have to start with putting together a list of 10 small presses and sending those emails.

    • Hi Halona I'm writing a novel at the moment myself I'm up 97,567 words. Have dyslexia and couldn't read and write until I was 17 years old. Anyway my question is do you ever work with a writer that suffer for such difficulties.

  • Nolan's main belief is this: don't be studio's Yes Man, even if it can give you great financial opportunities. Making movies for money only defeats the purpose of being a filmmaker. Then you're just a businessman.
