✎ He worked for the New Democratic Party (NDP) throughout his teenage years. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from McGill University in 1991. He worked as an assistant and an associate professor in the psychology department at Harvard University. In 1998, he moved to the University of Toronto as a full professor. He authored Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief. In January 2017, he hired a production team to film his psychology lectures at the University of Toronto. In May 2017 he started a new project, titled "The psychological significance of the Biblical stories". His second book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, was released in January 2018.

Yes! Motivation is key. I have been trying to find where's the quote or on which video/lecture where he says "10% extra effort at whatever you are doing translates to over 40% gains... like a salary raise for example at your job". I had a skim through and some of them skim close (like Aim High and Provide Value ones) but not quite, if anybody can help me out find that excerpt.
I simply love the man's views on life. Reminds me greatly of my own.

Multiplying by Zero. Any number multiplied by zero, no matter how high, equals zero. In other words, some unskillful habits, behaviour and beliefs can negate all the good work you do in other domains. Eliminating these unskillful ways has a much higher effect on your life than adding any new habit. My zero(s) are sleep (I wrestle with heavy sleep apnoe), recreational substance use and unhealthy nutrition (think pizza, chocolate and late night snacks). I am targeting those first before attempting anything else. Eliminating them with have the bigger leverage than changing anything else.(e.g. adding food supplements like vitamines).

No, that is a misconception likely because left wing associates groups and individuals are detaching from pragmatism more and more, and rapidly too. There are a wide variety of people who are craving pragmatic discussion and advice who aren’t political at all, me included. And a variety of people with political beliefs. It’s not right and left, most people don’t fall into those categories which act as caricatures. JBP is deeper than politics.

I’ve had chronic fatigue for ten years. When I sleep for the night I know I have no control over when I wake up. I must set a system of alarms that requires enough action I’ll wake up by the time I get thru it. Still completely obsessed and driven to save myself. I’ve done it before as a teenager. Saved my health from a horrible condition neglected by adults, saved my life from a suffocating prison of abusing family. Not giving up on my healing because I have an unrelenting magnetic force pulling me forward into the deep dark of unknown and dangerous forests, pulling me towards a light I can express and bring into the world. It’s well beyond words and connected to something deeper in reality, like consciousness itself. Doing it after all the repeated betrayals and doing it often alone. There’s no life worth living than willfully claiming your autonomy and beginning your path. Jordan Peterson and his philosophy have been exactly relevant Anna profound yet so accessible on my path. If I die trying, it will have been a life well lived.

Honestly I follow and apply all these rules. And I always have. I always thought I was doing something wrong and couldn’t figure it out and it was making me extremely depressed. And I just have to let go of wanting my pathological family to support me and accept me.

I drive a bus for a living ( I'm good at it), I love the part where Dr. Peterson talks about young men who just need a slight nudge or suggestion to move forward in their lives and that they have the potential to succeed at anything they want. Every once in awhile, I have the opportunity to do this with people who seem lost-ish my hope is for them and that I might have made a change or given someone insight onto something they didn't even think about.

I looked for Dr Peterson book 12 rules of life as soon as I heard his lecturing excerpt video came up on my browser a month ago, and I've been listening to him since. I pretty much agreed to what he said, it just a plain truth, and I don't understand for those who hates him and opposed his idea. He was just stating the truth that most of us trying or have been avoiding it all this years. I'm grateful for finding Dr Peterson. Thanks for sharing. To wish we all had him as a teacher at our schools cheapens the taste because there is only one Jordan but grateful to find his work. Everything happens all in due time, at the right time. If he would of been a teacher to us as kids, I'd not appreciated nor understood as I do now but damn sure a blessing to have now at 37 & now just have to work at applying the lessons! Reading/listening is easy and a joy but doing the work sometimes is a foreign task but no doubt will be worth it! Compelled indeed.

Valuable presentation. Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise with us all. Just a observation. Motivation depends on the mental emotional state of the person which can be drastically variable and not sonething csn always overcome alone. Having the inner reason for being and trusting life where you are a is a key factor. I witness lot of death of family members because of my age. It very tough, But I look for good also not stay to much on all the loses, I am big holy bible reader , because of the holy bible I get it people die continually but Look for goodness for right now. There other younger people who needs encouraging Do that. God bless me with 63 earth years, I know one day I'll never be on earth any more I believe you are very young from your videos. I suffer from the problem he talks about in #9: cracking the whip and then procrastinating. I'm not sure why I keep starting and stopping like that though. I guess because I feel there's not enough success from the effort to propel me immediately to the next effort. I also think it's a residue from my old mindset of just working to get through the day and get a paycheck. It's a hard mindset to break, the one of only doing work when there's a deadline and a boss who'll get mad if you don't finish. It is a problem I need to solve, though.

I'm wondering if that's the "poison I need to eat"... Because one of my goals is something that may or may not even have a benefit at the end of the road... and may ONLY be self-satisfying at BEST. And to me that's not necessarily enough to make me pursue the effort that it will take to complete the project. But I really feel like I NEED to complete it. And oddly enough that doing so would be extremely satisfying. So there is my conundrum. I'm clearly fighting myself. and I might be holding myself back from a really great result too I'll never know if I don't just bite this stubbornness and complete this project no matter what. And I'm thinking I should at least set a goal for doing so at 15 minutes a day. IF I can do that then I can complete this goal, even if I takes a long time to do so. But I suspect if I set myself a 15 minute goal I'll end up spending hours on this project.Z And there is a side benefit that has just occurred to me and that is, that I've promised this project WOULD be completed. I made this promise to several people who are very important and significant in my life. So there's that. wow this video certainly impacts my day thank you Evan Carmichael and thank you to all the people who commented on this channel because we're all works of in progress.
