He is basically new in the UFC, but has almost the same finishes than Max so I think if Max wants the championship belt he also has to take some risk and put the bmf belt on the line

It doesn't make sense to put the BMF belt on the line, since the BMF belt has a completely different qualification and Ilia hasn't earned that reputation yet. It doesn't work that way. That would mean if Ilia wins he'll have both belts. Then if he loses his next fight, does that mean both belts transfers to the next winner by default? That's just silly
If that was how it works then the BMF would just turn into a second featherweight belt

Only featherweights can fight for the featherweight belt, and only BMF's can fight for the BMF belt. Topuria cannot make "weight" for the latter.

There's a problem with each guy putting up his belt. The winner takes both, and both will be on the line the next time he fights. That means they meld together, and the BMF belt becomes an afterthought. Sure, you can always separate them out in different fights---one fight, it's for the weight class title, another time, it's for the BMF title. But (1) if you get beaten for either one, the winner claims that in essence he won the other belt too. And (2) separating out BMF/weight class title slows everything down. Title fights are half as frequent as they were before. UFC needs to think about this.
Agree the BMF belt is peer driven. There is NO WAY his peers think Topuria deserves a shot so early in his career.

We all know what BMF stands for. As I understand it, Ilia is already stating that he wont fight certain people. Not exactly BMF material. He needs to take a high stakes fight on short notice, or be involved in a real barn burner, before he gets a shot at the BMF belt. We're talking about differebt qualifying metrics.

The BMF belt has a meaning to it, not anyone is suppposed to be able to compete for that. Ilia is a beast but he is no BMF, if you can just put the belt on the line willynilly it becomes a currency for a title shot, that's not what it was supposed to be.

if you, chael, understand the bmf's value comes from it being rare.. why should it be defended or put-up in Max's next fight? there's no requirement for it to have a lineage. it's for Dana to throw in when he needs it to reward the brave and agressive who maybe haven't got and held the belt as much as the fans want them to.

Love ilia’s style, but all he has said is he doesn’t think anyone deserves a shot at ‘his’ title and he won’t fight this guy, or that guy. He hasn’t reached that level yet. Dana needs to make him defend the title or strip him. Him and max is the fight to make, but idk if max can just drop 10 lbs of muscle that he put on the right way. It’s a big ask. Topuria is just not a BMF yet.

I don't like this move from topuria. Its a good chess move but also just a blatant money grab. He just wants the ppv points associated with the belt. I would understand him wanting the BMF, but to make a title fight contingent on it... I disagree with. Especially since Max is a legend.

Topo hasn't been around long enough to fight for the BMF. Max is the no.1 contender anyway, Topo's belt should be up, but not the BMF, the BMF is about celebrating fighters who've been around and had ups and downs and comebacks and are fan favorits for their journey and their heart Topo just hasn't been there yet.

Ilia is not that guy bro. Bmf is a guy who fights when he doesn't have to. The belt is an afterthought, he would fight just for the hell of it. And when he fights would go all out to give the fans his best performance. All the previous bmfs had this trait. What you mentioned is just a mcgregor wannabe. Big difference.
I think Max deserves a title shot but I agree that the BMF belt should be a fan favorite type of belt. I think Holloway and Gaethje have both cemented themselves in ways that Ilia hasn’t that earned them the BMF belt. And there is the problem with the champ and BMF becoming permanently tied to each other
The BMF challengers have to prove they can both deliver an ass whooping and take one for years before they get w chance IMO. It’s not enough to be a dominant fighter or finisher. You gotta prove you can take ass whoopings as good as you give them.
Max should fight Conner at 155 for the BMF belt if Conner beats chandler. If Conner loses to chandler then max should fight ilia for 145lb belt

BMF should not be lineal.That makes it just another belt. It should be permanent. You shouldn't be able to take it by beating a BMF title holder. This also allows the UFC to promote any fight at any weight class at any time a BMF title fight.

Having the belt attached to a division champion is a problem meaning it’ll always be attached to a world title and not an individual thing, hence the ufc missing out on an extra selling point of another fight just don’t see it as the thing to do but wtf do I know

I was already thinking the best thing to do with bmf would be to let it move wherever it goes, across weight classes even, then i thought that could get silly depending on where it goes imo

I don't believe anything that comes out of Topuria's mouth after hearing him on an interview saying that he has a dozen people on his marketing team... I assume all this talk from Illia is just something that a group of people he pays come up with to 'build a brand'.
Putting up the BMF belt during the 145 or 155 match just essentially eliminates the BMF belt. Basically treated it like an interim championship 🤷
BMF belt needs a qualification. It needs to be someone, who did not care who he fights and had exciting fights throughout his career. But imagine if BMF becomes an Open Weight class belt of UFC. Or at least there's a limit that the challenger should at least be with in 2 weight class difference than the current champion. So if the current champion is a middleweight, for example, anyone from lightweight to heavy weight with the said qualification can challenge the him lol

The BMF title should be up for grabs once a year on International fight week. Whoever wins it gets the right to be known as the BMF for the next year and earn a large monetary bonus kinda like how Max got for winning the title and then the following year the belt goes up for grabs but in a different division with different fighters in order to keep it circulating.
Ilia Topuria won the world title and immediately listed off top contenders that he did not want to fight. Now he wants the BMF but made it clear, that they fight where and when he wants to. These things are the opposite of the BMF.

Far be it from me to dictate who’s worthy of the BMF title- all these roster competitors are more badass than anyone on the planet- but I think if you really dug into it, there are only a select few guys and girls who actually embody the meaning of that belt. topuria is bonifide badass at what he does, but he’s not a BMF who’ll meet you in the center stand and bang to see whos really worthy. I think that’s a pretty good litmus test for that belt. Max shouldn’t put that belt up for anyone who isn’t worthy

One thing you are missing. If the BMF belt goes to 145 now it will be in the 145 weight division…. Imagine if a fighter can tour that belt on three different weight classes..that will really be the BMF of the UFC 👌

Nah, I love Chael's against-the-tide takes most of the time to see things from another angle, but this is a flat out trash take. BMF getting raised up just for anyone defeats the purpose of the belt, it would simply be a redundant belt that gets tossed around. BMF needs exclusivity against fan and fellow fighter agreed upon BMF contenders. It needs to exist outside the realm of the usual contender-champion hierarchy. Random newcomers that won't take fights unless they're constantly given something like Topuria are not BMF material (yet). He can earn a spot if he proves his worth in proper defenses but he is ABSOLUTELY NOT BMF contender material.

I don't think BMF title should be passed around at every fight. Coz then it's just like boxing with some less important org's belt floating around with your own. It should be a totally separate thing you're not eligible for by default, even if you fight the BMF.
