If I asked you to tell me one word to summarise our season, you’re either saying “awful” or “injuries.” There’s not a season in recent memory where Manchester United have struggled this much with injuries. We’ve missed every key player in our squad at least once, count them up, and our match-up vs Crystal Palace added yet more names to a very long list. The injuries have ravaged our season. It’s hard to say where we’d be without them, but it’s higher than 8th. Here is how they have derailed our season...

  • The problem has been that we have not seen any "Squad development" since Ferguson left. We've not allowed a manager to have a bad season without sacking them when its obvious that to makethe changes that need to be made, we need a massive overhaul and change in structure. The Glazers didn't have a clue about the difficulties any manager would face when doing that, so they just went by public opinion and kept on sacking a managere, throw money at the new one, then not support them in their second year and sack them when it looks like they aren't going to succeed immediately in year 3. So every two and a half years we see another new approach to the squad dynamic. If we sack ten Hag this year we WILL be back here in two years under another manager. Maybe it won't be as dire as it is right now, because that manager in two years time will have had a proper support system of specialists in their fields at the club. I just wish some United fans would think about that time they spent laughing at Arsenal when we finished Top Four and they finished outside the European places... how it was all "Haha! Your manager is even worse than our PE Teacher..." Has Arteta suddenly turned into the bastard son of Matt Busby and Brian Clough? NO... he was just given time.

    • This is the obvious cause of all the issues with the club. If you keep changing the manager and getting the same results that proves 100% that the manager is not the cause of the poor results. Plus yeah squad balance is a real issue now. Who do you replace McTominay with if he's injured or needs a rest? We don't have any similar players on the bench, so if he needs to go off or misses a game you have to change the entire system to accommodate that. Sure sometimes you want some tactical variety so having options off the bench helps as well, but you also need cover and backups if you want to play a certain system consistently. And it's the same in most positions. McGuire for Martinez is not like for like. Diallo for Anthony? It takes more than 2-3 transfer windows to build a squad, because now days the squad has to be doubled up in basically every position so you actually need to build two squads. And we don't even have a first team that's really been built by the manager let alone an entire squad. Does ETH sign McTominay as first choice? No, he plays him because he was here when he arrived. You can argue that ETH could have done better but that's ALWAYS going to be true. It's unreasonable to expect a manager to be 100% perfect, none of the other managers are. So seeing poor results then pointing to mistakes he has made as if that's the actual cause of it isn't a very robust analysis.

  • Ten Hag from day one has had huge problems starting with Ronaldo then Sancho, the takeover. I can’t remember any other manager that has had this start to their managership at Old Trafford. Don’t forget that when he started the general opinion was that it would take him at least 3-4 years to challenge for the league he is in his second year and people are asking for him to be sacked, if Tuchel comes in as most people seem to want will he with this same set of players have the success that everyone wants? It’s easy to be successful when you inherited a team that are already up there winning things United are nowhere near being a competitive team, I hope they all get what they wish for and I still believe that Ten Hag should be allowed to see out his contract with new players that are prepared to work hard for their big wage.

    • I think a lot of supporters wouldn't mind seeing ETH stay another year, but only because we can't have another instance of these players getting rid of a manager. They need to go before he does. But this season has laid bare ETHs weaknesses. He's not a good coach, or at least is not a good manager of the coaching team - performances would have been better if coaching was better. His in-game management has been more miss than hit. His man management obviously leaves a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong, he's dealing with a bunch of weak-minded c**ts in that changing room, but a good man manger will know how to adapt to a weak-minded c**ts needs to get the best performance possible out of them, until he gets a chance to dump the player in transfer window.

  • The main issue isn't so much the injuries, while they're not ideal, it's the quality of the backups (and their backups when they have been injured). People say stuff like "why doesn't ETH coach them better" but, what if they're just not good enough? Pep wasn't expected to coach J Hart, C Bravo, Nolito etc, he was allowed to move them on and replace them. This is what ETH should be allowed to do.

  • We conceded a lot of goals in Ole's last season, we were bleeding goals all the time, the first thing EtH had done in his first 10-12 games was Try to tighten that defence up... There's a reason De Gea got golden Glove last season. The drawback was we weren't scoring as many goals, we were usually winning by 2 goals or 1 for most games, the occasional 3 goals were scored but we still won a lot of games 1-0 2-0... That backline was First half Dalot, Varane, Licha and Shaw and second half AwB took over from Dalot at RB. This season we've barely had those 2 combos and you're the one who told me all those years ago, consistency is bred from repetition. We haven't had the opportunity to keep a steady back 4 to get used to Routines, to get used to patterns and get used to the defenders worst traits so that another defender will cover up for them with his best traits. Even if we had a back four of our 2nd String Defenders (say AwB Maguire Lindelof/Evans Malacia) playing 10 games in a Row we'd probably be better off than where we are now, Where AwB and Dalot keep swapping in at LB and RB, the CBs play 2 games together and change. Casemiro was immense last season with Eriksen in front of a Set Back 4 but with his Legs going compounded with him getting injured for a chunk of the season, we're left right back where were a couple seasons ago...

This season the highest number of backline combination playing together is 6 games. That is wild. Palace game....Wan Bisaka is not a left back. Case is not a center back. Evans didn't even pass the fitness test. Mount is just coming back from a longterm injury...Ericksen?? Go back to the Andy Carroll tackle ....and no Bruno. Two teenagers in the starting lineup....How were we going to win that game?? The crisis has been getting progressively worse. ETH cannot be blamed for this. The question you need to be asking is just how did it come to this. Well .... there's a whole bunch of execs who've just been shown the door....and there's your answer.

  • Finally. The injury issue is NOT an excuse (especially since the manager is now playing players who fail fitness tests, see Evans vs Palace), as you highlighted Ste every side has had their fair share this season and dealt with it waaaaaaay better than we have. If I had to guess the root cause I would say it's down to partly luck (which as I say is same for everyone) but am glad you highlighted the intense training and the tactics because I think these are the reason we've had more than most teams. It's no coincidence that CBs are the players who have suffered the most injuries this season as they have been constantly having to make 30+ 30-40 yard sprints on the transition in every game since August.

We simply do not play a style of football that would dictate a heavily intense training method is needed. Think Pep even took a slight jab at it by saying even City take a day to solely focus on analysis/tactics. Think rushing players back has been very silly of us this season as well, The likes of Scott & Licha coming back from injury and being thrown into the XI that week is wild. ( Can see it happening with Arsenal at the weekend ) Either way its massively bit us on the arse this season, Someone like Licha has been missing all season and he's clearly vital for this team.

  • Last season was a long season with a World Cup in the middle. That’s got to have a knock on affect. The other problem with injuries is not just that some of our best players are out. It’s also that the team cannot possibly have a chance to gain any cohesion and understanding when there’s so much rotation of players and positions. You’re not going to get a Neville/ Beckham link up when the wingers and full backs are constantly changing personnel and even which side of the pitch they’re on. Everything has been constantly pulled up and replanted throughout the season due to injuries and that’s not good for growing fruit.

    @averageaimer8533@averageaimer853314 күн бұрын
  • The injuries highlight how incapable/inept the squad is as a whole. We're relying on players that can't pass accurately, aren't mobile/athletic, hide when in possession, run down blind alleys, won't pass to team mates unless that blind alley is obvious to them. The ceiling of the squad is around 4th, which we saw last season, but the bottom... The recruitment has played a big factor in this. The overpaying for Hojlund, Mount, Antony, Casemiro (the latter because they dawdled and then panicked), coupled with their ineptitude in moving on players not good enough, means we got 2 loans in Jan last year and no one this Jan. We've spent money terribly and compound it by not selling (yes the fees wouldn't be huge, but the wage bill would have a large chunk taken out). That'd mean we could have signed able replacements in the winter windows. I just hope there's significant movement this summer, because the longer that's put off, the longer we're only a few injuries away from a huge drop off in team quality.

Its not the amount of distance its the very short burst of turnovers and no screening midfields that is causing the injuries. That makes it very hard for the team to develop a consistent style of play. The lack of quality in our bench players is also less than ideal. However, given all that, I am very disappointed in ten Hag's seeming inability (or unwillingness) to adapt to the situation. • Most teams have had injuries as an accumulation of the mid season world cup, extended league season, shorter pre season and sheer volume of games. As highlighted by others on here, the problem is the squad is paper thin so when first choice players are injured, the back ups are woefully short. Last year ETH was able to field a more consistent and stronger first 11 most weeks and it showed.

  • Well for one, there’s a serious lack of squad depth. You need two for each position, that makes 22 players. Then you need additional 2-3 players that can be a Swiss Army knife both in the offense and defense respectively, think of a Daley Blind. That makes it to 24-25 players, and then you have the youth. You rotate a lot more and have constant competition of who is the nr. 1 in that position. Just look at City, If there’s an important game coming, and it’s a tight schedule, they either bench someone like De Bruyne or make Haaland play 60 min. but if they’re in the lead and in control, they already sub him during halftime. They can afford to condition their players. Many more squads are like that as well. United has no depth, and you’ve to start the same players over and over again, and there’s more and more games being added and more extended time added to a game each year. United are crawling each passing game to the next with tired and exhausted players, meanwhile if you meet an Arsenal or a City they’re relatively fresh because they can afford to condition their players right. It’s a structural issue at Man United and it’s beyond the manager.

Ten Hag basically picked the same 11 most weeks last year but it was never sustainable and too reliant on the same players. A long pre season travelling mixed with an inadequate physio/medical team. It’s so so similar to the season Liverpool had a few years back almost identical when they were plagued after playing too many games. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but for me it’s fairly obvious. Got to sleep right, got to eat right, got to manage stress. These things are often overlooked in favour of focusing on the match calendar as the culprit. As you already and rightly point out, it gets harder to manage fatigue for the players that are available because of the players that are out and again as you say, the players available aren't high intensity for 90 minutes players. When even Bruno has gone down, the squad needs a rest and of course, better recruitment. It's not just physical fatigue either, mental fatigue creeps in too, poor decisions get made, a scan fails to pick up a player (Palmer in the final minutes at Chelsea), tired tackles/badly thought out ones. It's no coincidence a lot of our dropped points/conceded goals have come later on in games.

The last thing we needed was an inter-continental tour featuring a fly-a-day, train-a-day, play-a-day schedule in the USA. It was madness. Most clubs started the season with their best players ready to go having played a few games together to get the new systems down. We were several weeks into the season befire we could get the first team anywhere near ready, and pretty soon half the team were rotating on a game by game basis depending on who was fit. The levels of fatigue that the players must be experiencing after playing football without a proper recuperative break is the main reason we have so many players dropping like flies, and then getting injured again as soon as they come back. The squad is at a point where "If you can walk unassisted, you can play..."

  • The standard of fitness and pace of the game will never really change too much. The pace and technical aspects will have marginal improvements every few years. The only way to reduce the injury risk would seem to me is to reduce the number of games. Reduce the league to 18 teams. That would allow for a further break as well as the winter one. UEFA might want to consider only the top 3 teams to be eligible for champions league across all countries. Some only get one entrant, so if they want to include more teams and more games, reduce the number from each country. 4th place could be for Europa league and if one of top four gets the FA cup, then Fifth place gets that spot.

Ten Hag's tactics alone is already demanding a lot of high intensity sprints, and he has said in Neville's interview that he doesn't think it is worthwhile changing up too much with the tactics when you are going through the process and you know the players can't do it to the full. I think it is just another way of saying "my tactics are fine, I'm not at fault." And he can be so deluded to claim United are "the most dynamic and entertaining team in the league this season." I think it has been quite clear to everyone watching the team that what Ten Hag claims can't be the truth (maybe it is very entertaining for the opponent, at least Ten hag got this right.😕). If Ten Hag really sees things like this, I think I would worry about the team going forward, the so called "united's way of playing" or "football philosophy" just ain't working.

  • Football players lead a dream life. They don't work like most. They had a passion as a kid. And that passion turned into an exceedingly lucrative income. For running around and kicking a ball. All they are required to do is a bit of fitness training a few days a week. And the odd day or two a week. Spend 1.5 hours kicking a ball around a park. For the entertainment of others. This has to be one of the easiest jobs on planet earth. And one of the best paid. I am afraid I can't have too much sympathy for them. When compared to someone like a Miner. Ship breaker. Any number of workers that risk their lives every day and earn little. And if they don't work. Often don't get paid at all. You can sit out for years at Man Utd on 150 000 pounds a week. Full pay. And do nothing. Poor little darlings. The game is soft. And the players are soft. You train hard enough. Strengthen the right muscles. Keep that height of fitness. You won't get the niggly injuries. You get a guy that swings a sledge hammer every day. It becomes easy. You swing punches every day. You last 13 rounds. Don't train for your job. You crash and burn. A lot of our squad doesn't look fit. When other teams are motoring about. We are walking. Not too much training. Nowhere near enough. What are the injuries. If there is a theme work on strengthening that area. Build up calf muscles. Strengthen ankles. Get them swimming miles. Great muscle builder with less stress. Race horses swear by it. Their career is short lived while they are young. Then set up for life. Commit to the job. Without that commitment and with no incentive to have that commitment. Full pay for years doing nothing. Then Football will continue to see high injury numbers. Just like kids wagging school.

    • I would say the injuries have indirectly impacted our goalscoring. Our wingers have been average this season- not creating chances, because of a lack of supply from the midfield, which has been inconsistent due to injuries and also poor defensive solidity due to the defensive injuries. Every line in the team relies on the one behind them

      @anthonyguiness9@anthonyguiness914 күн бұрын
    • Hojlund's shots per goal stats are pretty damn good. When he gets into position and actually gets the ball, he's pretty lethal. But when you have wingers who only want to shoot, it creates a problem. Hojlund isn't like Firminho, a player who's there to clear a path for the wingers to shoot. He's an out and out striker who needs wingers and midfielders to give him the ball in areas where he can hurt teams. So far, he's been feeding off scraps and very few of his goals have come from players actually trying to assist him. It's not a question of choosing one or the other either. Bayern have a striker in Kane who scores a lot of goals but their wingers score too. The forward line needs to have a target of something like 60 goals. Whether that's all three get 20, the striker gets 30 and the wingers get 15 each or whatever, the forward three need to be aiming to get 60 goals between them at the very least with the other 30 to 40 goals required if you're going to have a good season coming from other areas of the pitch (midfielders getting 5-10, defenders getting a few from corners, bench players chipping in etc). How those goal actually come about is down to the manager setting up his team and the players following instructions.

  • One thing we also need to consider when we speak about injuries is squad depth. Yes, all teams have injuries, but can they maintain the same playing style with the back up squad? When Luke Shaw gets injured do we field a "less talented" Luke Shaw or do we field a player who plays nothing like him? Same for all our injured first 11. I expect a drop in quality sure, but because our squad is imbalanced over years of recruiting different styles, we are very dependent on individuals because their back up doesn't match their profile (AWB can't play like Dalot, McT can't play like Casemiro, Maguire can't play like Martinez and No one can play like Bruno). If we want to play with a system, we need a squad that suits the system - and currently we don't have one.

  • I think ETH has to be given tons of rope due to the terrible injury record. He won a trophy in his first season surrounded by chaos. If we let him go, we are gonna regret it

  • City’s injuries are better than ours because they’re on cruise control for the majority of games and still winning them with ease. While we’re fighting for our lives every match.

  • No one knows why,there’s no common denominator and most Premier League teams have had very high injury rates,but I think the major issue at United is the lack of depth,there’s nothing like serious competition for your place to keep players playing.

    • WRONG. we have just over 6 times the Pl average for injuries in training, what does that tell you

  • I just think the players have bottled it and can’t deal with the pressure. So they are getting injuries. Ben foster said something along those lines on his podcast not too long ago.

  • But.. but.. but... Jack and robbo said that the only real reason is because ten hag is training them too hard 😮 And that's why we need the glorious tommy tickles and all our players will become bullet proof 😊

  • Do we have more players willing to be injured because of the abuse (not criticism) they feel they get? I don't know either??

  • With Brunos injury, it's come days after the interview alluding to him leaving, which came on the back of reports the whole squad is pretty much there to be sold off. Maybe that pissed him off. With the actual injuries, it's part of a run of awful luck - including terrible refereeing decisions - that have gone against us. One thing about bad luck: Sooner or later, it runs out. Up The Fucking Reds.

  • The STRENGTH in "strength and conditioning" has been completely phased out of modern football. The stronger you are the less prone you are to injury. I see elastic bands and bosu balls but never a single barbell or power rack in these "modern" facilities. All the physios today are frauds that chase trends instead of going with what works.

  • I don't think the players want to play for Erik. He hasn't got it. The old school teacher who used to talk about how strict they were but it didn't buy them respect...

  • What’s so confusing about this is…..a team like United have no doubt a team of coaches/nutritionists/high performance analysts examining all kinds of metrics, crunching data, modern sports scientists, but like many teams in the premiership they are plagued with injuries…..United have gone more or less a whole season with at least half a dozen up to a dozen players injured so the logical conclusion is, whatever these metrics are and however they are being applied in training and beyond are not working…clearly not working, whatever it is that this highly paid ‘team’ of scientists are advocating, from training methods to treatment does not work. Players in the 80s and 90s and even 00s were never injured as often as this? Is it possible that modern methods, taken from for example cycling….where the slightest outside interference in balance can knock an athlete ‘out of sync’ are simply too rigorous? Too mathematical, that the players are becoming too athletic? Or is it possibly post vaccination muscle injuries? Whatever it is….something is not right……or is it simply too many games, and too much demand on bodies that are so highly tuned, they can easily be unbalanced? Or….players nowadays won’t and don’t play through aches and pains like they did, and unless they are 100% they won’t play…..

  • the high wages dictate the number of games / tv schedule. Ask the players to take a pay cut = less games / less tv requirements.. they wont do that.....

  • It’s not the amount of players out. It’s the fundamental.crucial players we’re losing,which has destroyed our game. But ETH doesn’t try different ways. Not playing Amad over Antony. Baffles me

  • Its obviously not one thing thats caused all the injuries but it is one person's job to reduce them and manage fitness.
