  • Comment 1 of 2 The Lore piece: Congratulations on beating the Hunters Nightmare! What a journey, I'm not sure if I have a single favorite episode thus far I really enjoyed the Ludwig arc ngl lol. However the entirety of this playthroughs been fun. I've really been looking forward to this episode, now lemme give you lore. To comment on Laurence he's my personal favorite boss because of his boss theme, fight, and lore. He's the reason the beastly scourge happened to Yharnam. Everyone in Old Yharnam suffered because of Laurence all because he wanted to ascend humanity to the next stage of existence using "The Old Blood" the substance you've been healing with this entire game. Why he is the way he is in the Hunters Nightmare is because he and the healing church are why Kos (not Orphan but his mother who is the actual Kos) is dead. Along with Byrgenwerth which is led by Willem. Willem, Laurence, Micolash, and our good ol Gherman are why all this bad shit is happening. Orphan is the reason the DLC exists. It's his nightmare, and he's the unborn child of the Great One, Kos whom was accidentally killed by Byrgenwerth and the Healing church back when they were one entity who used her body and her parasytes to create "The Old Blood" which was used as the base experiment to see if they could ascend humanity to their next stage. To explain the DLC bosses and how they came to what they are now: the DLC technically happened first timeline wise, and after it Laurence got cursed becoming the first cleric beast whose blood erupted with lava/fire because he was obsessed with the healing blood. He formed the Healing church believing the old blood could ascend humanity. However before forming the Healing Church Laurence was a high ranked scholar who worked for Byrgenwerth with Master Willem as his teacher. The Astral clocktower was their original base of operations where the first batch of Old Blood was tested on poor individuals, and they needed a caretaker to help them stay sane despite the awful tests being done unto them, enter Maria. Every line Maria says to you before you enter her boss fight has double meaning. She's not just saying her words to admonish you she's also talking to herself. She tried to kill herself but because she's been trapped in the Orphan of Kos' nightmare she can't die. She can only be slain by us for peace. If you get the chance go back and listen to her dialogue. Then think of it as if she's talking to herself. Also Maria is a Vileblood if that means anything to you, hence her blood powers. The living failures were the first big failure of the original experiments of the healing blood, and they were why Byrgenwerth stopped screwing around with the Old Blood and instead began to fear it. Hence the phrase you heard much earlier in the game "Fear the Old Blood". Next let's explain Ludwig. This ones easy. Ludwig was the first hunter for the Healing church he began "The Hunt" where they'd hunt those who would turn into beasts after being given the old blood that Laurence began to supply from Ebrietas the Daughter of the Cosmos. Now think of the theme in the DLC bosses so far, they're all cursed based on their character and greatest flaws. Ludwig was a proud hunter for the church, however he became cursed to become the worst kind of beast possible hence his first phase. Second phase he becomes who he was before though still in beast form alone hence his sword and fighting style. Gherman and his place in all of this is he was the First Hunter. He came before the church hunters, and every other subsect of hunter fashion. Gherman was even why Hunter clothes were made so fashionable and sleek for quick and adept fighting capabilities. He also created the first Trick weapon, and from there the Hunters Workshop formed and more hunters began to rise up and take off to the streets of Yharnam and so on. Funny enough the Hunters Dream is the original Workshop he made, so it's no wonder that this is his dream that we live on through. Also interestingly enough Maria was Ghermans first and favorite apprentice. He taught her everything she knows minus her Vileblood powers. Gherman loved Maria so much though that her made The Doll in the Dream based off of her. So when Gherman says you can "use" the doll he likely has as well which shows what he kinda thought about Maria. To finish this absurdly long lore comment I'll say what the big theme of Bloodborne is, and what started this shit show off. The Simple version is Willem and Byrgenwerths scholars use Insight to ascend their minds to the next level of being this is their way of making humanity better. Meanwhile the Healing Church uses the Old Blood to ascend themselves. Micolash used his ritual of Mensis to forcefully establish a connection to Great Ones to try and ascend himself using a 3rds Umbilical Cord though it was doomed to fail, and that's why the story is happening. Our character is living proof that in order to ascend you need 3 things: 3 3rds Umbilical Cords from unborn Great One child, using the Old Blood without turning into a beast, and high Insight.

  • At the attempt to understand the ratio of how well you did in that fight against Orphan of Kos all I could think of was that "math lady" meme where she looks confused and there's all kinds of equations floating about, I also love you guyses comments and the fact that we sometimes have the same thought process as I too couldn't stop thinking of that song "when you try your best but you don't succeed~" Anywho looking forward to the next episode I don't really have any tips other than watch out for an 'attack' where he pulls you towards him a.k.a I think keeping a distance and timing parries is a good strategy on the first part and second part is probably just be aggressive, keep an eye on health maybe xD

    • Thanks! Yeah, the equation lady is pretty relatable once I start going through those fights and trying to find the patterns. Great! Thank you. -K

    • The music has been amazing thus far. If Gwyn’s theme is any indicator for final bosses, this out ought to be incredible. -K

  • Heck yeah! Congrats! Great Orphan and Fire Crotch (TM) fights! I started a new playthrough on par with yours (heavy on the dex, only using the cane in whip form) and Orphan took me more than 1 hour of tries. There's nothing more except the end. No tips, just lower the sound effects and crank the music. I know these games are not your bread and butter, but I'm really glad you give them the chance.

  • gerhman is probably the most amazing fight in my opinion. First phase is really parry-able, second phase is more deadly. When he charges up for the second phase, there's no damage but after that there is a AOE move that looks similar so just run away. Billy goat would be your best bet because you need to be quick for the fight. Also his gun splits so it has a bigger and wider hit box so be careful.
