They could have at least kissed each other in secret! At least once! Probably there were many times that Jeanne's grandfather was away from home and Werner could have kissed Jeanne. Like the time that the Grandfather was away for Christmas eve and Werner returned earlier than Jeanne's grandfather. They had an opportunity there! Thay could have been cold towards each other in public, but in private different. I don't think that Jeanne's grandfather was at home all the time, remember he had a friend named fernand. And Jeanne doesn't really have friends, so she had more privacy. Jeanne lives in a big Chateau,in a house away from other houses, there's less opportunities for gossipy neighbors because of the distance and location of the house.
@Skyblue-fw5rm2 жыл бұрын
@@Skyblue-fw5rm I don't think Jeanne was capable to cross the "enemy" barrier, she was bent on treating Werner as an Enemy. That is also due to the programming, for many years leading up to the Great War, the French propaganda also whipped up hostility and nationalism just like the German Propaganda that deceived Werner about the cooperation between Germany and France. Jeanne was too young to understand that there is the war out side the home, there is also a private world inside the home. Even the old grandfather did not have the wisdom to say: "Jeanne, the war will not last forever, one day, peace will return..." Of course, the script was written in such way so that the movie still hews to the original book which is a piece of Resistance Propaganda------Resist passively, by not speaking to the enemy. The view of the Enemy was very stark in the book, anyone who wears the Wehrmacht uniform is an enemy. Of course, many French men and women ignored this, and had social and business relationships with the Germans, some paid a heavy price when the Germans were defeated. I wish Jeanne could have some joy and happiness in private with Werner, they could be so so happy in a very bleak time....

Though I'd like to see them having some joy and declare their love for each other in the privacy of Jeanne's house, that would have to be another story like the film "The Exception", or the "Black Book".

Actually, he talked and walked his way into her heart, by smothering her with his action of kindness. Helping the little boy, offering her a ride, talking about his love for French literature, music, and his love for the Silence of the Sea! He saved her from the sexual assault from her cousin, played her the "most beautiful, purest, and his favorite piece the Prelude", she played that piece when he first arrived at their house. He even remembered where she stopped in that piece. His playing that piece on Christmas eve was like an offering of the purity, and sincerity of his love to her. When he left for the party at the Command Center, she was disappointed and went to his room to sniff his scarf and lie in his bed.... l love that he figured out that she was in his room lol. But sad she wouldn't talk to him when he went to the fishing shack to talk to her. Life is sweet irony, she only end up going home be assaulted by her cousin. Thank god, Werner arrives to thwart the sexual assault with his "mild death stare", only time i saw Werner fires up his emotion. Though the mild death stare was enough to chase the cousin away. Jeanne was probably too humiliated to thank Werner for saving her honor (I know, old fashioned way of saying it). We only begin to talk about sexual assault openly, god knows how frequent it happens, to women, and children, often by family members or friends. Jeanne repays Werner by saving his life.....This is soul level stuff!! wow, this story is amazing.

Maybe it's wrong for me to say this. But I would have liked to see Werner really drunk after the komandantur party(it would be funny to see him drunk, since he is so prim and proper).😀 What would a drunk Werner have said to Jeanne? Maybe Werner would have told her right and then everything he feels for her or he would have kissed her. He was drinking a little and maybe that gave him courage to try to open her door. Maybe it's a cultural thing the fact that Werner isn't open about his feelings. I don't like Pascal,he is sleazy, but at least he is straightforward about the fact that he likes Jeanne.

Brilliant scene, just brilliant. Pascal covets Jeannie, he is opsessed with her, and can't handle it when she keeps refusing his advances. He has a nasty streak, which he hides well, until he thinks she has someone else, and then the jealousy erupts, and he is determined to have her first. But... Along comes Werner, who knows how pure and innocent she is, but can control himself. When he opens that door, and sees her distress, it gives him all he can muster not to kill pascal there and then. He can't, because it would lead to complete cayos, for him, for Jeanie, for the grandad. His anger, though controlled, bothers him, because now he knows this drive to protect her, proves to himself, he has fallen in love with her. He won't make a move on her, he wants her to make the move, so she feels safe, and in control, and there is no doubt in her mind, that he is who she wants. Pascal is just a pup, who needs a few lessons in how to behave,

@@justmyopinion5099 She regretted not talking to him when he left abruptly for the Russian Front. The tears streaming down her face, she was utterly heart broken. This is how young people get played by propaganda, and sacrifice their precious love. She did not have the foresight that one day the war will end, peace will return, that they can love openly. Then again, this book was a Resistance propaganda. Even 60 years later, the 2004 film's director and script writer knew they could not deviated from that one over riding principle. Jeanne and her Grandpa must not compromise. But they did each say one word to him at the last goodbye. I think the film has done an outstanding job showing us how cruel and inhumane war is.

All is fair in Love and War. They should have crossed the line and talked and held each other, and what happened would have happened when no one was around. My feeling is if they survived the war they would be together. That kind of love cannot be denied.
I find him so descrete he helped her out, but doesn't ask what happened.

Because the original book was a piece of Resistance propaganda, the character Jeanne and her Grandpa don't have a choice, they were WRITTEN to resist Captain von Ebrennac. Cannot be any other way. Though I'd like to see them having some joy and declare their love for each other in the privacy of Jeanne's house, that would have to be another story like the film "The Exception", or the "Black Book".

We can all see how terribly wrong things have gotten, when young people can not express their love for each other. I hope the French people are coming to terms with the war years and forgive and let go, i see lots of anger in comments about the "Horizontal Collaboration" of French women who had relationships with German soldiers, or not. I can not believe how much hate some people still bear towards those women still in this day. I wonder how this film was received by the French general public in 2004 or today.
I am so in love with this film. Her subtle glances and controlled inaction in his presence was perfect. He tries hard to humanize himself but in the end resolved that it will never be.

I wish the ending was different. War ends and he returns to her. How is that
It can not end that way because the book was a piece of propaganda for Résistance. The French public opinion (still programmed to hate the German occupation) would not have it. Just as the film was written, it met heavy criticism, the opinion makers hate how the film portrayed Werner with nuance and humanity. That was 2004, this year is 2024-80th anniversary of DDay. Let’s see what films are compared no out to commemorate.

Similar to a movie cslled The Pianist which takes place during the Nazi occupation in Poland where the main character plays piano in hiding in the Polish underground. Eventuaaly a Nazi catches him but doesn't do anything but stands and listens showing that music is indeed international and transcends all races and situations even war. Ironic juxtaposition.

its great 🤗
Her defensiveness gave her away and validated what he suspected. . It's kind of cute and funny. His frustration at the situation that a man who is permitted to talk to her, tries to rape her. Whereas he cares for her and has to suppress his feelings. He can't express his need to comfort her. Was always surprised that he didnt have Pascal arrested. That's who I initially thought was taken by the police, not the resistance guy.
That guy was the one who put the explosive to the car. she always felt scare to that guy who said cousin., the feeling not knowing how she is and him. Is so difficult to keep inside.😢😢😢

Pascal, wrong person, right attitude.
@ Amy M Aren't we are wild with our imagination. This movie tells us seize the moment. I am never going to get over this movie. It shall stay within me forever ❤️
Haha, but the movie’s background is the war, the war constrained their behaviour.
@@tingtingli If I was her, I wouldn't talk to him either.... Ever. He's our enemy. They invaded our country and our homes. Him walking around our house like a free man., very offensive to me. I think he's truly a gentleman. I am fighting with my own thoughts.

@mimbresgirl He says, "I wanted to tell you something. I..."
Why is he upset/mad at her after the asault? Such a beautiful story!
He is frustrated that her fellow French man (Pascal) is allowed to enter her home and attempt to assault her (she was lucky Werner interrupted the attempt and saves her from the assault), yet, he, Werner can not expect a spoken word from her despite his love and respect for her, because he was the enemy occupier.
@lisbetse286 Hey! :) To be honest, I don't even know if that exists. To answer your question- when she sees him at the dock- standing there- she knew exactly that he knew she was in the room! She just played it off as nothing, never showing the slightest expression/emotion.
