  • Mike Jackson intentionally made a mockery of the fight, and I understand that it was bad for the paying audience. But Jackson demonstrated that CM Punk was absolutely not fit to be in there. Jackson exposed Dana White and Punk's trainers. They made a mockery of the sport by allowing Punk to be in there, and Jackson proved it. No wonder White was pissed.

Botching moves are extremely painful, and a single mistake in the ring could be fatal. Also punk hasn't had hardly no time to train for an actual UFC environment. CM Punk ain't one of them. Im a fan of CM punks work in ROH and WWE but he should have been training for two years before he ever thought about fighting. Plus even in the WWE he experienced legit pain he even shat himself on an episode of smackdown he does not have a threshold for pain not can he fight. • I strongly believe that that is why he chose to train with Duke Roufus. He wanted to make his gimmick legit, so he went with a kickboxing specialist. Punk strikes me as the kind of guy who's decisions are driven by ego. When he was "feuding" with Brock Lesnar in WWE, Lesnar made fun of him for wearing hand wraps and basically being a weekend warrior. Even though it was scripted, I think it would legitimately hurt Punk's pride to hear that. And I think that partly influenced his decision to go into MMA

Clearly, his UFC run probably should never have been attempted, but he was a guy pushing 40, with a significant history of injuries and miles on his body basically starting from scratch attempting to fight on a pro level. You'd have to be an exceptional talent not to fail under those circumstances, and if anyone's at fault it's UFC for basically allow him to do a fantasy camp. I can't fault Punk for seizing the opportunity to try something he had an interest in when it fell into his lap. The same rule applies here. It's just stupid and dangerous. Jackson showed Punk mercy, tbh. He could've knocked Punk into the next dimension in Round 2 on many occasions. Some people say he was showboating. I just think Jackson (another inexperienced fighter) didn't want to permanently damage Punk. Imagine if Punk went against a real UFC fighter. HOLY SHIT.

He probably could have done with getting some more experience in lesser promotions before signing with the UFC. Most new fighters in the UFC have at the very least 5 pro fights but it's normally more like 10+. Mickey had 1 before he fought Mike Jackson and Punk, which don't even really count. • Really difficult to excel in more than one field, especially when the fields aren't related. I imagine Rogan is right about competitive sports like football and track being much more useful in UFC preparation than a performing sport like wrestling. Punk wasn't able to make the competitive fighting transition near as well as Lashley or Lesnar. But then again, Lesnar didn't have that much success with football, although I hear that was due to injury. If he did he would have excelled in three things and that's super difficult. Apparently wrestler Kazuchika Okada in New Japan has a track and field background that has served him VERY well in wrestling. His vertical leap on those dropkicks is amazing. Best in the business. Do the things wrestlers do count as athletic even though there's no real competition? I would say yes, but Rogan appears to say no. Falling off a ladder without hurting yourself too bad seems athletic to me, and I know CM Punk did that.

    @theboombody@theboombody2 жыл бұрын
    • Well I mean both Lashley and Lesnar were legit athletes back in college. Lesnar obv was a great wrestler and on practice squad in the NFL. Lashley was also a wrestler and in the army at one point, so that's some combat experience I'm guessing. CM Punk is nowehere near either of them in terms of natural athletic ability. But yeah I agree, wrestlers are essentially stuntmen. Even something as simple as balancing on the top ropes requires you to be "athletic" to me

If punk had 5 years of consistent pro training under his belt, sure maybe. But dana basically signed a big name amateur fighter. Arguably not even amateur, just a hobbyist/enthusiast. • It’s not his age that’s the problem, it’s that he has ZERO athletic talent and obviously has never been in a actual fight in his life. Even with his career in WWE, he really wasn’t a great athlete. As Joe Rogen said here, you can take a guy who has done track or something and they would do better than Punk, because they’re a REAL athlete, even if the guy you pulled was the same age as Punk. I give him credit that he put on some amazing matches, but that wasn’t because of his athleticism, it was because he and whoever he was working with (best example probably being John Cena) knew how to work the crowd and play to their strengths and hide their weaknesses. It’s quite frankly exactly what Hulk Hogan did to make his matches so entertaining (look at his match with Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3 for example, by no means a “mat classic,” but because Hogan knew how to make Andre look good even though he was actually suffering and knew how to sell his ass off, that match was 100x than it probably should have been). The difference is though that people at least know that’s how Hogan worked, most people will still tell you Hogan was actually a shitty in ring wrestler. Where as people actually seem to think that Punk was a “legit” wrestler, even putting him in a category of other wrestlers who were legit athletes in their lives like Shawn Michaels. He wasn’t, he was NEVER much of a athlete, hell he started out as a typical backyard wrestling kid, not though sports like football or actual wrestling.

    • I feel Joe is unfairly being dissed because of him praising Ronda's striking back then. I'm not as much as an avid watcher of UFC anymore unlike before, but back then, I remember that when the women's division was just starting out and Ronda was being hyped as a dominant champion, a lot of folks thought she was a complete fighter and she did seem like it. Her striking was not seen as impressive but people thought that it was decent enough to compete in high level mma. After all, she did get wins with KO punches too, and she deceptively looked decent with her stand-up earlier in her career because of her opponents. So Joe praising Ronda's striking at that time doesn't really sound that absurd, unlike it is now with hindsight. But then her loss to Holm came which really exposed how crappy Ronda's striking is. People then realized that Ronda's striking back then just looked decent because she never fought against an excellent striker before until her loss to Holm.

Their point is that his development over these last few years as a competitive martial artist has been incredibly unimpressive. Not only did he come into MMA with no experience, he has been very slow to progress. Probably due to his age and coddled training. Many people can train diligently for 4 years and look very good, Punk is not one of those people. This is not about UFC level vs amateur level, Mike Jackson is an amateur and he looked like Anderson Silva out there. This is not his thing, he would have never been a great fighter. Even low level mixed martial arts promotions would make him look bad. This isn't about the UFC being too high level, this is about CM being bad at MMA after so much high level training. • Punk started mma training at his late 30's with no experience besides wrestling on wwe. Most of the ufc fighters train since childhood years non stop, and they have the genetics and the talent on top of that. It's really a big disadvantage to start a sport like ufc that late in your life like punk did. Who is gonna be better? The guy that started at his late 30's or the guy who's been doing this since childhood years? There are exceptions, some guys have started late, and they were good but not all men have the ability to do that. Also punk doesn't shoot up steroids in his ass like half of the ufc that have failed the usada. And punk might got his ass kicked, but at least he had the balls to step in, and he got his ass kicked like a man. And even when he got his ass kicked that didn't discouraged him and he didn't gave up, he showed heart and he was actually trying his best in those fights. It’s Dana who only cares about money and attention. Dana has so many parallels to Vince McMahon it’s ridiculous. They both are greedy, egomaniacal, and selfish. They both will screw over deserving and talented fighters/wrestlers on an emotional whim. And they both have lost the plot to what matters in their product. Oh, and neither will ever step down until they are dead regardless of how much they are harming their product.

  • You can't just jump into MMA and expect to beat these guys that have been training at it for years, unless you have something extraordinary like Lesnar's size and amateur wrestling background, and even then, he got caught in a heel hook by Frank Mir right out of the gate and had to really go back and get enough training to have some basic defense. Punk is a really good example of what would happen to most pro wrestlers, and it's not a knock on them, but it's pretty arrogant to think you can walk into another profession and do it as well as the guys who have devoted years to it.

When the guys wanted to protect kayfabe, they must be real tough guys to beat anyone thats want to pick a fight against them. Like all the 90s shoot style uwfi guys or the guys from new japan in the 70s 80s 90s like antonio inoki, minoru suzuki etc. dont forget all the real hooker like karl gotch or lou thesz. That would be the only guys who had a chance when they would do mma training but nowaydays when everything ia wrestling is so phoney and only had spots after spots you no longer need do be a legit catch as catch can wrestler or shooter.

    • Lesnar first went to football and was super competitive in the first place so something that physical makes sense for him. Lashley was a pure walking wall of muscle, like Lesnar before him, who was competitive enough to want to fight full contact. Hager was the person who was willing to go for the biggest target in the room. Batista tried it, found out he was too slow for most fights and wisely left to pursue what he was essentially doing under McMahon, that is acting. What's the difference between those men and Punk? They were willing (eager even) to be as physically demanding as they could against the toughest opponent they could find, especially when the serialized soap opera they performed on insisted they follow the script they didn't want to follow. Punk doesn't have that same drive, he wants to be an entertainer. That's admirable, but the other guy usually isn't concerned with putting on a show; he's concerned with putting you out.

  • I love Joe but sometimes he thinks too much of himself. He's the same guy who talked about ronda,s striking expertise by just watching her hit pads.

    • Making a comment while watching a video doesn't mean that that video is one he's commenting on....just saying.

    • Vincent Gaspar Punk didn't go three rounds. He was gassed after the first. His opponent toyed with him for three rounds. There's a difference. I mean, his opponent literally tickled him at one point.

    • Vincent Gaspar he only "survived" because his opponent let him. He could have finished Punk off on multiple occasions but didnt, either through inexperience or trying to make an example of him.
