I took my husband straight off the plane from Japan to inner city Detroit. Find out what he thinks of it. You'll be completely shocked!

I'm on the opposite side of the world from Detroit, but if I'm not mistaken Detroit is a up and coming electric vehicle hub, in particular part of the new midwest battery belt. The US is currently activating the midwest to take on the Chinese manufacturing power.
God bless you and enjoy the day and have fun in your country ❤✝️💙🙏
@OrientalPearl if you're in Detroit again you should arrange an interview with Charlie Leduff he has a KZhead channel and he's a well known Detroit celebrity.
I’m curious as to why you and the other women found it so funny and entertaining to be be standing in a poor neighbourhood, as if you just took a trip to the zoo? I’m sure you would not walk into one of their houses and laugh in their faces because they live in poverty…so why would you find it ok to laugh at them behind their backs and then show it to all your viewers? And it’s not just in Detroit it’s all over North America and the World…and it’s getting worse by the day. You are very fortunate if you get to live a different life…or just drive threw…just please don’t laugh at or be disrespectful to the rest of us.
I live in Detroit and cant get enough travel videos cant wait too leave this hell hole!
I love how proud you are of where you came from. You don't hesitate to show all sides of your hometown
Thank you! I’m glad I could share Detroit with him.
@@OrientalPearl ❤️
@@OrientalPearlyou know what Detroit synonymous with???crime in Robocop the movie hahahaha
I wouldn't be proud of Detroit these days
@@flowerfields2379because that's not where she's from. Detroit has a gated community and she's one of them. Besides that's a ghost town. Why don't she go down to Stockton California and vlog there to see how *not just Japanese but every other person feels like lmao
As a fellow Michigander, I am glad you spoke well of Detroit. Michigan as a whole is beautiful.
i felt the same way, I'm 30min from Detroit, just a few minutes from DTW and it's nice to see people have experiences like this here.
Live here also.
Michigan as a hole is beautiful.
Lots of good people there but get rid of that wack job demorat governor
Do you guys know as a whole means lol? It's not beautiful as a whole if parts of it are shitty@@JackFate76
As soon as I read the title, I had to watch this😂
I’m glad you clicked fast! Watch our last Detroit video too.
I watch all of her videos, they're all great! 😁
@@OrientalPearllet the Japanese dude free… he needs to breed with Japanese girl they have population issues
Haha same
Your Tommy is such a good sport, and his English is getting so good. You 2 make me smile....😊😊😊
He’s been studying really hard.
I know you've been doing videos of your trips to highlight your cultural backgrounds while visiting your family, but have you considered going somewhere together that's new to both of you and comparing your reactions? That would be an interesting video.
We went to Korea together for the first time, but that video is a Patreon-only private video.
So really, it's all about the money.
Haha wonderful
@@assog5737 I mean, this is her job. She educates and entertains. Teachers and actors get paid. I'm from Detroit and always like to see what others think of the city, instead of hearing folks bash it on a regular. I've lived all over the metro Detroit area throughout Wayne and Oakland county. My wife and I just bought a house in Detroit 3 years ago. Folks think we're insane but I don't care what people think about my choice. Glad to see other Detroiters come back and visit. Home is home.
I agree with you! Home is home.
You know damn well she’s from ferndale Rochester Troy somewhere but not Detroit
As a Michigander who's been to Detroit it's quite sad what happened, but the city has actually gotten quite a bit nicer in recent years. Still, I am grateful to be from the west side of the state!
I'm very glad to see the improvement every time I come home.
Well the nicer parts are in midtown and downtown but the east side of Detroit hasn’t improved.
Wait what happened tho
Wish I was young and had some $$$. This is the time to look for deals.
Why you gotta do my man Tommy like that 🤣. Poor guy was legit scared
And then he loved it and thanked me for taking him there 😊
Yeah, be careful, this is America, lot of hate going around today!
Tommy is just the coolest guy in Japan now!
I agree!
Always a enjoyable moment watching you guys. Keep up the fantastic content!
I'm so glad that you liked this one!
I am Canadian and spent a year in Windsor while in teacher's college. I didn't have a car in those days (didn't feel safe using public transportation alone, across the border), so I didn't get to see Michigan. Thanks for posting this (and Frankenmuth earlier). Your husband has a great attitude and good English skills. I had an exchange student from Japan who took my Drama class and she experienced huge culture shock, but was always so sweet and polite as well.
I’m glad you got to see the video from the first trip to America. We had a lot of fun both times.
I always wondered what it's like living in Windsor, it being right across the river from Detroit. I realize Detroit is a lot nicer now, but having that big city with a terrible reputation so close. Is there much spill over crime? I could imagine the Canadian border police being on high alert 24/7.
I used to visit Windsor a lot when I lived in Guelph, Ontario. I used to stand by the river and look across at Detroit and wonder what it was like. I was born in St. Catharines and my family still live in the Niagara Peninsula. We used to go across to Upstate NY a lot in those days. Our family considers Americans from the border cities to be pretty much the same as us.
Thanks for making this video and I loved it. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! It was fun to make.
This was really fun, I'm over in Lansing but have been to Detroit countless times. You really aren't lying with how far the city has come. Detroit still has a bit of a stigma but it's doing progressively better.
I’m glad to see another Michigander here!
If only we could get some decent restaurants in Lansing lol
Minnesota guy here, but happy to see you showing the improvement that's been happening in Detroit. Sure, there are problems, but that's never the whole story. I had a great weekend there years ago, and of course the UP is right up there with northern MN for beautiful landscapes.
Believe it or not I’ve never been to the UP.
@@OrientalPearl I hope you get a chance to take Tommy there some day. There's a boat tour out of Munesing to see the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, or so many serene hiking trails, and of course you'd have to get pasties for lunch.
Almost at 1Mil subs! It's so great to see your channel flourish since I found you three years ago.
So many beautiful old abandoned houses. If a Detroiter from the 1950s were to time travel to today, they would think that the USSR invaded
This is awesome! An experience that Tommy will never forget.
For sure! He actually really enjoyed it.
Tommy looks quite comfortable in that muscle car!
Every big city has it's up, downs, good, bad times and ugly as well as nice parts. May your positive memories always shine a light on all the negativity the media projects on the world. The tens of thousands of people that lived in Detroit gave the world so much through their hard work and should not be forgotten.
Enjoy your visit with your family. I love seeing you two together, light hearted fun. Tommy your English skills are amazing. Thank you for the nice video.
He’s been working really hard learning English.
I love seeing Tommy expericing all these things. I'm looking forward to more videos!
More coming soon. I enjoy making these. I wish viewers liked them more.
You guys are such a lovely couple. I wish you all the happiness in the world
Indeed. They're.❤
Aww, that’s so sweet. Thank you.
Welcome back to the Motor City! Greetings from Tecumseh, MI
Feels great to be back in Michigan.
I must tell you my absolute favourite videos of your channel is you taking Tommy to places and seeing his reaction to things. Please do more 😊
Love it glad you’re traveling and thank you for sharing !!! And holy crap you’re almost at 1 million subscribers!!!
You guys seem so cool!
Nice to see you and your husband in the US♥️
It’s been a great trip.
I'm from the 313 and I love watching the intersection of cultures and it is so relevant to understanding language and its evolution, so continue making videos you enjoy making
You bring a pleasant light to an uncomfortable subject when you went down 8 mile & the park. But you balanced it nicely with your glimpses of the renewals.
I’m glad that you like the balance.
You should visit East Tennessee, especially Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Dollywood, the mountains, and maybe a dinner theater or two.
I'd love to take Tommy across the entire US.
Tommy's English is much better than before. He seems to understand all of your comments 😮
He has been studying hard!
Hey, I happened to see your community post about the algorithm not treating you well, and it's true, it's been a hot minute since I've seen any of your videos. But I'm glad I saw that post, and I loved this video! Thank you for representing America as it actually is and dispelling all the fearmongering.
That’s why I need more people to have the notification bell on so I don’t have to worry about appealing to the algorithm and making the same damn video again and again.
Can't wait for the next couple of videos!
I’m so glad to hear that. They’re coming soon!
I’ve lived in Kensington,Philadelphia for most of my life at this point. Seeing the worst parts of Detroit is similar but very different too, there are a LOT more people on the street here from what I can see, but still many, many empty unlivable homes (they are big and formerly beautiful in Detroit though, here we only have row houses, small and close together). I’m glad it seems like you both enjoyed your visit 😊
You should show him Ann Arbor or Royal Oak. Those are pretty nice areas of Michigan
I love those areas. We plan on seeing a game at the Big House next visit.
@@OrientalPearlwill have to buy tickets far in advance for a Michigan game
Traverse City and Holland ( Tulip time )
I’m a Japanese born in southfield, Detroit, MI and proud of it haha !
Love your channel!
Thank you so much!
Can't wait to see the video of Tommy at the shooting range! I was at the LAX Shooting Range once and a Japanese tour group came in. One of the employees of the gun range was a Japanese speaker and he had really cool assortment black powder pistols, revolvers, and modern handguns to demo to the group. The Japanese tour group was in awe! Would love to see how Tommy reacts.
I'm really glad that you're looking forward to that one because it seems like people refuse to watch anything I make but reaction videos.
Cool video as always! It is a bit sad see these areas, l have spent a couple of months in Detroit in early 80s in a place called Taylor, nice places.
Thank you. I know exactly where Taylor is, but I haven’t been there many times.
Keep em coming dear. Your videos are awesome!
Thank you so much!! I hope you subscribe today and enjoy many more of my videos.
New viewer here, I've only watched 2 other videos. Your husband is too cute. It's nice to see that you've learned not just his language but others too. I'm enjoying your adventures
Welcome to my channel! I hope you enjoy all of my many videos.
My dad is from Detroit! He has alot of memories!
Aww, I hope you get to visit his hometown one day.
@@OrientalPearl maybe. His childhood home isn't in the best area these days. My mom likes telling me about the first time my dad took her to Detroit and she told him it looked like a warzone. It's good that this video showed that Detroit is getting better though
Had the same experience with my Korean wife! We also explored Nishinari in Osaka, and then brought her to visit Michigan for the first time, saw the Heidelberg Project. My parents' sub looks just like yours too, on 22 mile 😄
That's so funny. What a coincidence.
Those abandoned buildings aren’t on the outskirts; they’re in the city…it may not be downtown, but it’s still the city
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing. 👍😊💗
I’m so glad that you liked this video. I really enjoyed making this one.
Good to see things are getting better there.
Yeah, I'm really glad too.
Tommy suited that car! Looked super cool sitting in it. Can he drive? Can't wait to see more! You are both so cute ❤️
He has an international drivers license, but he was too nervous to drive my family’s cars.
Next time take him to Grosse Pointe and drive Lake Shore Drive for a complete contrast to Detroit. I grew up there and lived in Detroit for some time too. While in Grosse Pointe you can visit the Henry Ford mansion in Grosse Pointe Shores. When driving around Detroit drive by the house used in only lovers left alive, have you seen that film? Another amazing thing to do is visit Greenfield Village in Dearborn, so many cool things to see. 👌
Been there about 23 yeas ago. Yes downtown Detroit was a cultural shock to me. But still, it's very very beautiful there in Autumn with all those mild weather and breeze and falling leaves. And still many nice generous people, and Michigan women are beautiful too. I just hope they do something to their own community.
Tommy was a fish out of water this episode. It's great he gets to see where you come from! 💜
Hi Wushaw, nice to see you here again.
Great video and interesting to see how Detroit is being slowly resurrected from blight, as you call it. I hope one day, you both visit my city, New York City, and i'd be more than happy to show y'all around gratis. Stay well and sayonara , for now.
I was in NYC back in December.
Wonderful.. Next time bring Tommy and i'll give you both a full tour. Thanks for replying and keep up your labor of love.@@OrientalPearl
Favorite video so far!!
I’m so glad that you liked this one so much.
Patiently waiting for the Tommy visits Texas and goes to the Houston Rodeo video! There's also a large asian community to make other videos in Houston
I think since you went in to the rougher areas or projects of some of Japan's major cities, it is only fair that Tommy does the same in the States. Very understandable. This was a fun interaction.
I'm glad that you liked this video. Check out the Japan slum series if you haven't seen it yet.
Tommy is very, very patient...it must be love 💕
He looks patient in the videos lol. He's not super patient normally. haha
Another great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Fellow Michigander here! Welcome back you guys! ❤
Thank you Carrie! Pure Michigan
Omg my favorite KZheadr responded 😳You made my day! ❤️❤️ I’m Native American/First Nations and have always wanted to go to Japan. I’ve definitely wondered how people there would react to me in full traditional regalia. It would be so fun!
Yay! Tommy survived inner city Detroit! Love the octopus hat!
I'm glad that you liked that hat. We thought it was so cute.
If I may say so, you and Tommy together make for the most entertaining content. Your Auntie laughing uncontrollably at Tommy in the muscle car is a prime example. Rock on!
Love Tommy’s reactions 😂
Me too. He’s funny.
This my first time here. You guys are the best.😊
This was great. 1m subs is around the corner. Congratz.
Thank you! I hope we get there before the end of 2023.
Growing up in the Intermountain Northwest, I remember seeing abandoned homes in the rural areas I lived in. I always found them quite sad, like a dog waiting for a master who was never coming home. And others just looked plain creepy, like they were haunted. In time I found out local families owned the land where these houses sat, they just used the land as a Tax Write Off. pearl, you should take your husband to one of the local haunted attractions, they should be starting up there soon, in honor of Halloween 🎃
He just missed the haunted houses because he already left, but I plan on going to a few while I'm still here.
This was a really cool watch. I’ve never been to Detroit and I’m from California and I honestly had a similar view of what it was like as Tommy did. I’ve been to other places in Michigan that were very different but I liked learning about a part of my own country I’ve never been to. And Tommy’s culture shock was a cool thing to witness
I’m really glad that you enjoyed this video.
Another video with smiles from start to finish... thank for sharing! If you get to Nashville, holler ! We'd love to say hello from a fan. ~Ed and Shantel.
Welcome to USA again!!! Come to New England
Thank you. Feels good to be home.
Loved it
I’m so happy to hear that!
Wow…. My wife and I just discovered your channel… We found your channel because of our interest in Japan…. And coincidentally found out your a Michigander….. I grew up in Ferndale, Michigan…. My wife is from the Philippines….. We are new fans…. I hope to speak Japanese half as good as you some day….☮️
Tommy's so cute with his Japanese "Ooooooh!"s lol. Love the shooting range clip! I'm glad he had fun!
That’s my favorite part too.
You're a brave man Tommy 😂
He did well.
Tommy’s thinking “I’d rather we walking around Fukushima in a g string than be here”.
Glad to see that you had a great time in Michigan. I'm sure your family and friends were so happy to see you both. Have a safe trip home. ❤
Thank you. I’ll be here for awhile. Tommy already went back.
Excellent video thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Great video!
Loved the video. As a country lad from the UK I find most city scapes threatening. It's sad seeing the old homes rotting away, although the idea of nature reclaiming them is good. Some years ago I took my niece and nephews to a war museum. A former soldier was showing off some guns and my eleven year old nephew just walked away. We were embarrassed that he was being rude but he explained that it upset him that the man was glorifying tools made for killing. Sometimes kids can be so wise.
Sounds like a kid who was an unrealistic worldview.
Detroit does have a bad reputation globally so I'm glad it's getting back on it's feet. Heidelberg project seems fun and colourful. To me Detroit seems like Chicago. I used to spend a lot of time there, in the more poor neighbourhoods, where my ex is from.
Yeah, Detroit and Chicago are like siblings in a lot of ways
It’s certainly doing a lot better than when I left in 2012.
I love this video! ❤
Awesome video! 🤗
It was really interesting to get such a unique view of Michigan, thank you! I'm glad things are getting better.
I’m glad that you liked this video.
@4:45 Tommy is a bomb disposal expert approaching a blonde bombshell! :D
Ha ha 😛 nice to see you here again friend.
that street where he has the vest on is nicely paved and looks very organic
Loved seeing Tommy’s reaction to the not so great places in my home city! I hope he got to go to a Tigers game or to go somewhere fun like the Fox or the Whitney.
Very cool! I'm from Detroit myself. I moved to Atlanta in the late 90's and moved back in 2018 to Ecorse, Michigan. Detroit has changed for the better indeed. We get a bad rep here. Thanks for making this video.
Love your channel Used to live in Detroit as a child but live in the 'burbs now. Lifetime Michigander. Be safe!
I’m glad to have another Michigander here!
So fun!!! I am from singapore and if i ever get to the US i also want to see muscle cars in action and fire a gun!!
You would love the Woodward dream cruise then.
@OrientalPearl just looked it up and that looks like a dream! 🥰
We definitely have that to offer
It’s great to see you and Tommy together enjoying each other’s home place. I’m excited and happy for you both 👩🏼❤️💋👨🏻! You’ve got such a great husband Anming. Enjoy your beautiful memories together. Maybe your in-laws can come to Michigan next time. Great 👍🏽 job.
Aww, thank you so much. I wish they had come and visited this time.
enjoyed your video, and Tommy's facial expressions.
He has the best reactions lol
A lot of USA is like this, you can drive around a state and find old abandoned areas all over, we have them in Florida, and New Jersey that i've seen personally. I don't really consider these area's the "ghetto" just abandoned. the places I avoid are rough area of a city where there is active drug activities and gang shootings often. I had a family member so lived in a city and when i would visit we would go for walks with the dogs and all but she warned me of all the streets not to walk down because they know of local gangs that own those streets which is insane but it's still a thing in USA. I've also seen other youtubers in Japan and all that I follow tour USA and one of the things they were surprised to see the most is all the homeless, no matter where you go in USA there are always homeless everywhere, which for someone who doesn't live here, they don't think of USA as place of homeless but it's bad here. However despite all the shootings and violence and issues in USA, your chance of actually getting shot or even seeing a shooting is still so incredibly small. I've never once seen anyone pull out a gun let alone shoot a gun in public in my life, despite what seems like 10 mass shootings a week lately in USA, (We actually has 12 mass shootings in same week a few weeks ago, media only covered 2 of them, mass shootings are shootings involving over 3 victims)
This is the most disrespectful video. I've eve a seen she must have been a shelter child This is a joke she don't know Detroit or Hamtramck 😢
I didn't know that Japanese people are so aware in terms of American cities. I as a European have no idea about Detroit's bad reputation.
Europeans are critical of gun violence in America but many of the unjustified shootings occur in a handful of the worst cities. Otherwise its actually just as safe as most first world countries. Its just that there is a crazy amount of shooting in detroit and Chicago with the gangs
@@glowindark64 Sandy Hook, Parklands, 351 mass shootings this year!🤔
Detroit makes it on the Japanese news a lot, especially in 2008 when the subprime mortgage crisis happened.
I have watched a lot of your videos, but this was my favorite so far. I kinda know Detroit a bit (Born in Toledo, in Las Vegas now), so it was nice to see certain things, and hear that Detroit is getting better. My favorite part though ... hearing that old 60's (1965? Belvedere?) Plymouth. As soon as I heard that car start, I knew it was a MOPAR !!! Thumbs up to whoever owns it! Ron Mancini built the trans in my car. I remember when it was Gratiot Auto Supply, :) That will mean nothing to you, but the Plymouth owner will get it. Keep up the awesome vids ... I speak no foreign languages (although I did kinda get a bit into German, years ago), but I LOVE watching the reactions of others, when you speak their language! Take Tommy back, when the weather is warm ... and go to Milan, for the drags.
Love to watch your video❤congrats tommy, welcome to America
Thank you! 😃
Wow did you explain to him how DEMOCRAT policies implemented in the 1960’s lead to this level of decay, abandonment, and devastation? That feminism, and secularism and thus the breakdown of the nuclear family, were the driving forces behind this demolition of a once great city & country?? That globalization and outsourcing of labour resulted in this heartbreaking ghetto of a once thriving economy? 😢😭
I'm originally born and raised in Detroit and moved to California in 1990. Went to Cass tech high and then Wayne state university. Was sad to see most of my old neighborhood gone on the east side as I went back recently for a wedding. Glad to see some type of comeback.
From the time I started at Wayne State years ago till now, downtown Detroit has come a long, long ways. It’s going to be decades longer before we see that progress into the neighborhoods, unfortunately. I also grew up in the northeast suburbs- I think that’s what I was seeing. Didn’t realize you were from Metro Detroit. I stumbled across your videos after visiting my cousin in Yokohama. Loved it out there.
Wooooooooooo Amazinggggggggg!!! Awesome video!
Thanks for sharing Detroit Muscle Detroit Hustle Love that background music
Thank you. I put a lot of effort into the music choices.
You should see the Packard Motor Car Company building. For many years it was the largest manufacturing plant in the U.S. if not the world. Of course, many people in the U.S. don't know about Packard but hey! You lived in Detroit. I think the Proving Grounds are still there.
This reminded me of that old clip "Take him to detroit!" :) I like how you show up your city in a good way and is proud of it.
Really great idea for a video. I used to live in Japan (I'm from California). I've never been to Detroit. Watching this was interesting because as an American we all have an idea about Detroit. But I could watch also through the eyes of someone from Japan having lived there and speaking the language. At first I was thinking, oh my god, please don't take your Japanese husband to 8 Mile. But you opened my eyes too. Anyhoo, thanks for this eye opening and interesting perspective of your home town.
I’m glad to give you a different perspective. Enjoy more videos today.

OMG I love the constant look of surprise on Tommy's face LOL. The part when he's in the garage with the car and ATV, he's like a kid in a candy store. Awesome!!!
I’m glad you watched all the way to the end to see that reaction.
