What does my Japanese Husband think of America? DETROIT

What's it like to visit America for the first time? My husband and I left Japan to come to Detroit, Michigan where I was born. I haven't been back in over 3 years and he's never been to America, so there will be a lot of culture shock!

    • This is something that I've heard and I'd like to know if it's true or not seeing as how you attended a sporting event with enthusiastic cheering. Are sports fans in Japan far more reserved at sporting events in terms of being loud and celebrating a victory? Or is that just another myth?

    • American hug-culture is pretty well-known in Japan; my in-laws had a mix of trepidation and excitement the first time I went over to Japan that I might just hug them immediately. Of course I knew Japanese culture so I didn't, but some part of me thinks they were kind of hoping I would. I think I did when we were leaving Japan on that trip, and have since then.

    • @@captain_britain Hahaha... my nieces will, but they're both 25 and under and I've known them since they were tiny. My sister-in-law won't initiate, but she will go with the flow. I don't really do bro-hugs with BiL and my wife's dad. Might be a bridge too far. They're cool, though. Dad always tries giving me strange unmarked alcohols at some point in the trip (he spent many years as a tour guide, so picked up lots of local liquors), and BiL is a good guy though he works a lot.😁

  • "Welcome to Detroit! You're running, why are you running?!" The transition between those two clips in the intro is the perfect way to describe what the typical person thinks when they hear Detroit 💀😂 I've had the opportunity to go to Detroit back in Spring Break 2019 for a robotics world championship and honestly had a blast! Hot dogs and pizza are two things Detroit does right. The crust of a Detroit-style pizza is absolutely perfect, especially a corner piece! Though I'm sure through this Detroit visit, Tommy's realizing he's been taking Japanese trains for granted when noticing how American cities are compared to Japanese ones. And love the fact even your father knows Japanese!

  • There's a story behind Detroit's Coney dogs (for those who don't know): Despite the name Coney dog being named after Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, the Coney dog originates from the Midwest. But why? In the early 1900s, many Greeks came to the US through Ellis Island to escape the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes. In Detroit, there's a tense rivalry between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island right next door on which one has the better Coney dog. In fact, Lafayette Coney Island was actually founded by the BROTHER of the founder of American Coney Island! Like how Mister Donut became a thing because its founder Harry Winokur chose to no longer work with his brother-in-law, William Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin' Donuts.

It's awesome that your husband's first experience of America was Detroit, and his reactions to everything were so heartwarming. Bringing him to Michigan in the summertime should be an amazing experience, especially if you could bring him up north. Anywho, I just recently discovered your videos and I love your channel. Second, Detroit is my hometown, too :) - Living here currently, making plans myself to have an extended stay in Japan. It's so fascinating to see your husband being amazed by how things work here in America. You took him to some of the nicer spots. Sadly, he didn't get to see the riverwalk, which is SOOOO nice in the summer. Yet, Downtown is beautiful during Christmas. You and your husband warm my heart and soul. You deserve all the success you have and more. I wish I'd bumbed into you when you were here. I have so many questions. God Bless you! And merry christmas!

  • I'm crying cause this is exactly how my aunt, my cousin, and her husband reacted when they visited us in Bay Area, California from Japan! We took them to their first Warriors game, Giants game, Sharks game, 49er game, their first In-n-Out Burger, first legit Mexican food, first legit BBQ in Santa Cruz, first jazz band concert in San Jose, and the obvious iconic tourist places to visit (Facebook, Google, Apple, Golden Gate, Ghirardelli). It was so fun seeing their eyes sparkle at every place we went and all the people we met along the way that were able to make their first visit to America so much more memorable! I'm so happy to see Tommy got the same experience and you can totally see how happy he was!

  • I loved every minute of this video. Tommy's open mindedness, was incredible. He was so eager to explore everything and experience and soak in all of American and Michigan culture. I think he has fallen in love with the USA. Also, I remember that Coney Island diner was featured in an Anthony Bourdain cultural show several years back. It was pretty moving at the end when Tommy was flying back. I'd like to see him come back to the States very soon.

    • @@OrientalPearl Yes, it was from his Detroit episode from around 2013 or 2014. It was a really interesting episode. I think I have the right diner. There are probably a few Coney hot dog places there I'm sure. I think his show filmed at the Duly's diner which is like 90 years old.
