Venturing into foreign territory, we found ourselves surrounded by an exotic assembly of European cars rarely seen on U.S. roads. Though we struggled to pinpoint the makes and models of some of them, it was obvious these vehicles were going to be entertaining and fast!

    • @@brandonlimbirdthey're not strange, just different. I dare you to Google Vauxhall Calibra Turbo 4x4, I had one for years, they had Cosworth heads. I modified mine heavily, it also had a factory fitted Irmscher bodykit, in a green/purple flip factory paint job! The US was the only country in the world not to get the Calibra it was sold in South America as the Chevrolet Calibra! Considering it was a coupe version of the Vauxhall Cavalier, which was the same as any GM Cavalier in the US but with slightly different panels, it's quite odd the US was denied it!

      @whynotagain3639@whynotagain36398 ай бұрын
    • @@whynotagain3639 The US had a Cavalier coupe, Beretta and Camaro. Also, the Euro Cavalier (Mk.3) and Calibra were based on the GM2900 platform, whereas the US Cavalier was still based on the J platform. The US market Beretta is pretty much analogous to the Calibra though. When Opel designed the GM2900, GM in North America retained the J platform for their Cavalier. In North American GM introduced the L and N platforms to fill the same size niche, the N is a stretched J and the L is more derived. GM had a complete clustershag of platforms at the time. Odds are the US wouldn't have gotten the Calibra, they would have gotten a GM2900 based Beretta instead of an L platform based Beretta.

Supposedly the Chevy Chevette is a redesigned T-car that doesn't share body panels with earlier ones, but the Vauxhalls sure look like they share part of the bodyshell. It always tempts me to sketch up or model different badge engineering experiments, like international F-bodies, Chevy and Opel versions of the Fiero, etc. They've got so many real life examples of just touching up the nose and rear fascia to rebrand the car that it's pretty easy to just follow the established formula.

    • out of interest how do you find Canada? The whole car culture etc and just life? Genuinely curious.

      @bradleybatt1401@bradleybatt14018 ай бұрын
    • @@bradleybatt1401 Canada itself is great but it’s very much like most other developed western countries: it has a large middle class made up of folks who work, rent or own their own houses, who go on holidays and who generally earn enough to get by. Then it also has a poorer population who rely on the state to help them survive and a small but growing elite who own multiple large homes throughout the country and beyond. In general I’d say that Canadians are more outdoorsy than us Brits and taking part in sport is more typical per-capita than back in the UK. There is no chav culture here or even really any equivalent; youngsters are inherently more likely to follow a path of socializing, sports and activities rather than “hanging around” like I and most of my friends back in the 90s used to. Economically, Canada feels much the same as the UK: mixed. Some things are far more expensive in Canada than in the UK. For example, mobile phone bills, Internet costs, TV and cable, subscriptions, and particularly, the weekly shopping (which is almost double what it cost in the UK). On the other hand, some things are much cheaper in Canada that they are in the UK, such as restaurant prices, petrol prices, clothing prices, and particularly energy prices. So all in all it probably balances out. I have definitely noticed, though that it is easier to earn more money for the same job or at least have greater spending power on a given salary in Canada than it is in the UK. For example, my wife’s parents were both high school teachers (both now retired), but were able to afford a small holiday home in a nice part of the country and to be able to holiday abroad each year. My friends in the UK, who are teachers are not in that same position. My wife works in healthcare, and in the UK with, and perhaps only 1/3 of the salary that her job is able to earn in Canada. I am sure there are opposite equivalents of this, but I do not know of them. In terms of a car culture, though, the UK, trounces Canada easily in my opinion. There are far more classic beautifully restored American muscle cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s here than there are equivalent European cars in the UK. But this is probably just a sign that Canada was dragged along by the United States post WWII as both countries found themselves riding a wave of industrial investment from all the factories that were built to serve the war, had no damage to repair from invasions that never happened and had a huge motivated workforce ready to get moving. Their people were able to earn good money, buy homes at low prices, invest wisely and have disposable income to spend on toys like project cars etc. However, I would suspect the percentage of the population who own a car is broadly similar to the UK. I would guess that the percentage of people who own multiple cars (one of which is some kind of a project car) is possibly greater here than in the UK. I’m just basing that on anecdotal evidence - I know of more people here who have some kind of old motorbike or their dad’s old Chevy or whatever that they plan to restore one day. Maybe the fact that our properties in Canada are so much bigger than in the UK gives the ability to store and work on these kinds of projects whereas back in the UK we have small houses and a lack of space for this stuff. But Canada lacks the motorsport heritage that the UK has. Racing circuits that host the kind of track days that I used to find myself at every couple of weeks throughout the summer, year after year in the UK just don’t exist here in Canada. In Vancouver - which is one of the largest and most affluent cities in the west of the country - there are no full-time race circuits that are used week after week for organized, ratified, motorsport events. There are no professional series of racing leagues, as there are in the UK. There isn’t even a professional karting series, whereas the UK has a number of them, which are often the gateway into professional motor sport for many drivers. Overall, organized Motorsport in Canada is almost nonexistent, apart from a few very small, very niche events. Whereas in the UK, motorsport plays a significant part of life for many of us. At least it did for me, my family and all my friends. Two of my other hobbies/passions are comedy and music and if I rate the UK 10/10 for these (which I do!) then Canada gets a solid 2/10. You only have to look at the number of amazing Canadian comedians who made the very easy decision to professionally base themselves in the UK to see this. Sorry for the ramble!
