Megastructures: Building the Burj Al Arab | Dubai Engineering Documentary | Reel Truth Science

2020 ж. 2 Мау.

Dubai is on a mission: to become to top tourist destination on the planet. This Emirate has almost tripled its coast line, by building a palm-shaped city at sea. Now Dubai plans to put itself firmly on the map by recreating the world, three hundred man-made islands constructed out in the Arabian gulf. It’s the biggest reclamation project ever undertaken. The world can only be built of natural elements they demand by the shape. But it must define nature’s most destructive force: the sea. Engineers will battle against time and nature to create this man-made wonder visible from space. But will this creation of this mega structure push Dubai to the limit?

  • I was posted to physical procurement department as finance manager and I had to work with external and internal architects, quantity surveyors, structural engineers, contractors, electrical electronics engineers etc. My job was to provide Management with financials on how the various projects would be completed within specified time to avoid cost over runs. I had to rush to youtube for a crash program on construction management and this clip is one of the best I saved and used over and over again. I remember one project we had that was intractable at first. We were to build our branch in Yenegoa, a coastal town by the Atlantic. All the elements of the above clip came into play. The city itself was just 98 meters above sea level, unknown to us was an underground river and so many other challenges but I was very comfortable as the engineers and architects were discussing the technicalities, thanks to this clip amongst others.

  • The building is really a testament to the innovative architectural and engineering accomplishments of everyone who worked on it. They all did incredible work. As awesome as the building is in terms of its design and engineering, this project wasn't just a luxury hotel but part of a large-scale economic strategy that had real, tangible importance for the people of Dubai. Their leader saw a looming economic crisis and basically said "oh fuck that," and threw their state's resources into creating a new economic future. Taking that risk is not easy (likely not even for the ultra-rich).

I was an admin assistant in an Architects firm and i know when the clients aren't happy the shite can hit the fan and contracts can get pulled without warning. Changes happen all the time and once everything is finalized it can still change it is not over until it meets every stage of planning and the doors open with everything certified. No short cuts allowed. What a cracking building with all the princes upgrades its no wonder that it costs so much to stay there a night. Way way way out of my price range that is for darned sure.

How many more have sustained longer term health effects in the heat of day and cold of night in its 24 hr per day race to complete? Just trying to get fair representation for those who can’t represent themselves; either because they are dead or because they are disempowered or their voices to be heard.
