    • There was an instance of this in an England v France six nations game a few years ago. A ruck formed, and then there was a strong shout of "CHRISTOPHER..." from Owens. You could almost hear Robshaw's hands being snatched away from the ball that he wasn't allowed to have. Fabulous stuff

  • Went to school with the ball boy that hit Nigel in the head. Nigel came up to him after the game, chatted with him, took pictures with him, then gave him his jersey and signed it. Still hanging up to this day in the schools gym I believe

    • It’s such a shame he has retired to smaller nations games as he was as you said the best ref in history. He was strict but unlike a lot of current refs, he kept the game flowing which is the best thing for rugby. Love from SA!

He would referee an international on Saturday, then referee a local club game on the Sunday. And it shouldn’t need to be said, but it needs to be said until it doesn’t need to be said: it’s so refreshing that his sexuality is such a non-issue within the game. One day, wider society will follow suit. Makes me proud to be a rugby man.

If fifa decided that they were going to clamp down on bad behaviour and whatnot and support the refs completely, then i bet a lot of money it would disappear practically overnight. But they won't.

    • @@mrbtapir No its the entitled, pampered, overpaid, spoilt brats playing the game who have their heads so far up their own arses they fart to speak that are the problem. Yes the powers that be are shit scared of the players but the fault lies with player's discipline. they have none. Its why they cheat and get away with it. Only 3 people speak on a rugby field: 2 skippers and the ref so any issue the skippers are called in and its THEIR problem. If you argue over a penalty the ref walks 10 yards further forward. Argue again its another 10 yards. Refs in football pander to the 22 egos on the pitch rather than taking control.

    • I think it has more to do with the rules: in soccer all players are able to appeal directly to the ref in play and when it’s stopped-appealing to the ref and discussing the game with him is not just allowed it’s expected. That’s not the case in rugby where only the captain can talk directly to the ref and only at certain times-of course, the ref can talk to anyone at any time!

  • I'm training as a soccer referee ( I'm 17 ) and when I have to take some games I always do everything to maintain control over the game, this man is an absolute legend and the one I admire the most. Always teaching who's boss on the field.
