    • ''I liked seeing ... '' yeah YOU liked it while billions of people in the world didn't and from a business standpoint YOU are pointless because if a corp want to sell something to the masses that something needs to be damn great and have wide spread instead of pleasing one or two randoms like YOU. Both are oddball choices, HM and Ikea in this case, considering neither of these are world market giants. Especially back in a day barely even a home country of Ikea had enough stores let alone in Europe or the world or lets say USA where Sims was originally targeted for. It took them decades to go anywhere and even today these are not spread or famous stores in any way because we have far better alternatives. Heck even local small pop n mom shops offer far better service then a giant ever would and rather support local crafts then mass produces garbage. I havent seen a single Ikea store in my life and I traveled a lot, same for HM. Even getting a catalogue was a pain bcs I had to ask some random person from Sweeden online in a chat room to scan me those into jpeg. Which back in a day was hard to do for a every day person to gain access to internet so as gain access to scan and upload high-res images. Mostly impossible even. Just to see what they sold out of curiosity because even if you would like to buy something it's not available anyway. Their company based offers were basically non-existing and you had to go out of your comfort zone to find out that your local store have far better things anyway and you shouldn't care for these silly game adverts and cross-promotions because they are for some dump in the world that you will never visit in your life. As a company such as EA I would branch out to much as possible giant corporations for cross-promotions and work hard for their own regions. These were expensive stuff packs that barely appealed to anyone it was basically self-destructive decision to make these.

  • If I remember correctly (and as someone who never grew out of their emo phase, I’ll be upset if I’m wrong) the reason My Chemical Romance turned down the twilight soundtrack wasn’t so they could record Na Na Na in simlish but because they were trying to move away from the vampire schtick and just didn’t want to be associated with twilight (and I can’t blame them for that). I think Gerard Way saw it as selling out. They actually wrote the song Vampire Money about it. Thank you for coming to my emo TED Talk.

  • Jake Simpson, a developer on Sims 1 and 2, posted a few threads on Twitter of stories from behind the scenes, and he talked about the celebrities in Sims 1! "Another thing about Superstar was Celebrity involvement and endorsement. It really started with Drew Carey, who was an unabashed fan. They ended up doing a Sims themed episode for The Drew Carey Show, and Patrick Barret coded a bunch of scripts specifically for that. We did add Drew as a walk on NPC sim, just because he was a decent person, but his interactions were extremely limited. He was just happy he was in there at all, as I recall. But when Avril Lavigne came along for SuperStar, it turned into quite a lot of back and forth. Her team were really just interested in using this as a vehicle to promote her latest album. There were so many approvals we had to get and so many restrictions... She couldn't just be "another sim" because there was no way that her team would let a representation of her just pee on the floor, for example. So we had to code a massive amount of specific scripts, just for her. It upset the social game too, because you weren't allowed to have a relationship with her either. Going forward, the team basically said, "Never again" because of the amount of work required to make this work. EA kept trying to get the team to use celebrities, but it was just too much work. We always seemed to be a vehicle for them to promote themselves, rather than them promoting The Sims, you know?"

EA only wants to work with them to get their hands on some of that music-industry cash. They probably got along wonderfully in their meetings… And then the people actually making The Sims are like “oh gods please no” as both EA’s and the music industry’s higher-ups don’t understand how video games work yet demand for x y and z things to be done 🙃 Support indie music, indie game development, and acknowledge the dev teams and people with musical talent that suffer under disconnected, incompetent, and abusive upper management.

  • The Nicolas Cage picture is an edit. The original photo is from a poster that said "READ" across the top and he's actually holding a book called Siddhartha. It was a poster promoting libraries and reading. You can look up American Library Association READ posters and a whole ton of them come up. Shaq had one, Britney Spears had one, Barbara Walters had one. They actually still do them to this day. Channing Tatum, Constance Wu, and John Cena are some of the more recent ones.

Not to mention, The Sims' CAS system, especially with the robustness of its system in TS4, is the perfect allegory to real-life drag. If I'm remembering right, someone offhandedly asked about realm of magic and he kind of went off the rails and spent a good chunk of the stream making himself a spellcaster lol. They added one of their most popular singles "Dulce Locura" (Sweet Madness) into the game. In Simlish, of course. I don't know if the song is part of the overseas versions of the game, though. • Something that's important to remember is that with social media and everything, there really aren't as many super high-level famous people around anymore. You can follow whomever you want and the massive "cults" around single pop stars in the early 2000's distribute among many people these days.

  • When I was into the sims as a kid and showtime came out I was also a huge Katy Perry fan. And I was so sad that I couldn’t afford it, so the fact that it got so cursed came as SUCH a shock to me when I got into sims content on youtube lol

  • When you talked about your song “my intestine be protestin’ “ I laughed so hard my cat woke up and the leaf blowers outside stopped. (I have IBS that is more constipation based so it hit home)

  • Hi Plumbella! Thank you for this amazing video 💖 To complete your list of celebrities: Shy'm, a very famous singer in France, did a collab for the promotion of the Sims 3 Pets. It was a whole web-series of 5 episodes in the San Francisco EA Studios. She also recorded a song in simlish which is lost media I think, because I never managed to found it into the games, even in the console version.

  • From memory at least some the costumes, the dancemoves and the descriptions of the singer (and band career for the Jacksons) careers in Sims 3 Showtime always seemed like quite clear references to Michael Jackson.

  • I really LOVE how she bleeps the F word when refering to woohoo but doesn't when it means anything else. I mean it. I love that.

  • Obsessed with this longer form video type. It's definitely what I consume most on KZhead because WFH means I want to put something on and not have to keep finding more content. Great video, I remember having the Katy Perry Showtime and Stuff pack in Sims 3 when I was maybe 8-11? and even then I thought it was weird!

  • I love it when Jess mentions LGR. They're two of my favourite people on the internet. Get Ryan and Shane in there and that's the holy trifecta ♥️
