3 DIY Mosquito Trap Comparison Yeast vs Soap vs Borax

2018 ж. 16 Шіл.
783 492 Рет қаралды

I compared 3 DIY Mosquito traps that are mentioned heavily in articles and videos across the internet to kill and get rid of Mosquitoes. I used traps using yeast, soap, and borax. The results are kind of predictable. You can use big fan with a Mesh to catch mosquitoes which uses a lot of energy or buy a mosquito magnet device that attracts and kills mosquitoes. However, the best way to repel mosquitoes is to plant herbs like lavender, mint, basil, rosemary, and thyme.

    • I spent a whole summer out in the middle of nowhere in hot humid weather as a camp nurse and got 2 mosquito bites without using anything. After inquiring I learned they had several bat boxes around the property. Bats apparently really like to eat mosquitos. If you live in the city, this may not work for you but you could always ask your local DNR, or extension office. Also, this year I've used peppermint & vanilla spray and it seems to work but the mosquitoes aren't really out yet here. Thanks for the update!

    • Jag check your property for standing water sources and get rid of the water. I notice the mosquito you have in one of the videos is an Aedes species. These mosquitos tend to develop in small items holding water around the yard. Check with your local vector control district to see what they can do.

  • Though you might want to try this indoors, as it may be different. From my experience, I can't have a glass of soda or milk without a lid, without finding one or two mosquitos in it after a while. I also left some clothing dipped in water once with clothing soap, and it attracted quite a few, which was unfortunate in that case. Not saying the traps should work effectively. I have no idea. I'm just saying they might have some effect indoors.

  • Keep in mind that spraying neem oil around the yard actively endangers pollinators. My wife and I use it for some pests, but we're very careful not to use it near any flowers/pollen sources- and even then, pollinators do land on random leaves, stalks, etc. so are still at risk.

Once a week I empty them, wash the base and refill them. You have to put the bottle top upside down like a funnel. once they are in they can't get out so they will die.

But I've never been able to consistently recreate that one trap, but it works great on flies and earwigs. edit: Oh! Also, paint or cover the walls of the trap. • This is hilarious to me, because I have been making homemade mosquito traps for years now, and THEY WORK GREAT!!! I use Yeast, Brown Sugar, and Water. That's all!! Except one thing different. I use black construction paper to wrap the plastic bottle. The mixture of brown sugar and yeast produces CO2, which is what attracts the mosquitos (and other insects looking for blood) CO2 oozes from our pores, and from our breath. This mosquito trap works. Im not sure what your problem was/is.

    @samlott99@samlott994 жыл бұрын

I’ve had mild success in the past with cedar based yard sprays, but the only thing I’ve found to be really effective for mosquitoes is putting mosquito dunks in any nearby standing water and on moist soil. (I haven’t done that yet this year…thus the 1 million mosquitos currently in my yard and house.) Also, soap, water, and vinegar work great if you ever have a fruit fly problem in your house.

  • the water and soap trap should be much larger. Your goal with that trap is to mimic a laying pool for the mosquito to lay the larva in. Once the mosquito trays to land on the water due to the soap breaking the water tension it won't be able to land on the water and it will drown. A wheel barrel full of water with some soap mixed in (no bubbles on the surface of the water though) and that will be way more effective than a small bottle of water.

  • Any opinion on the Spartan Mosquito Eradicator? Owner says that mosquitoes are attracted to the device for 90 days, kills 95% of mosquitoes. Causes their guts to rupture, per company.

  • Herbs are also inefective. I have 2 HUGE rosemary plants in my front garden and the are always filled with mosquitos. Also in my back garden i have 1 huge basil plant, same story.

    • I experimented with this, same result as yours, so I found quiet a few ways to repel mosquitoes. One is to pick stems of herbs and then burn the herb stems, that works! will be posting a video soon!

  • You say you don’t want to attract mosquitos but isn’t that the point of the yeast since it creates CO2?
