I agree about the recommendation to use the correct safety glasses. Because using a welding mask, just because it looks opaque to you, is no guarantee in itself when it comes to laser safety. Because maybe, at the wavlength that the laser uses, your welding mask screen is transparent and only looks opaue to you at wavelengths in the normal visual range. So using the correct safety glasses is very important. Your eyes are among the _most_ important assets you have.

I'm going blind because of a flash of light and I'm getting worse by each week an sometimes by each day. Lost my ability to drive an it's harder for me to eat seeing what is right in front of me trying to pick it up using a fork is the hardest, so using a table spoon I've found much easier to get food into my mouth, unless I can use my fingers. Please always Protect your eyes. Typing this, is really hard. Having to make these letter so big it drives everyone else crazy looking at it. But they know what I'm going through and I'm glad they got all their stupid jokes finished because I didn't care for them. Bid live to get a machine like that to wood work with and build kids boxes like you make. I could see myself pulling a wagon behind my wheelchair with it loaded up with wooden boxes for grandkids and their classroom students to each have a box with their names on them. That way they each get a box with their name and I'm sure they will always remember the old white bearded disabled veteran made it for them. But first I have to save up to afford one of those, an wonder if I can order one since I live in the states. I'm sure by the time I can afford one they have those here. Those trays and boxes was awesome buddy and I really enjoyed the china heater you made, I shared it with I'm thinking 20 friends and family members the other day. I hope you and everyone reading this stays safe and warm and I hope I didn't have many typos. I've fixed about 8 already.

Thank you for being one of the few who keeps the power down to 90 in stead of going to the hundred. I don't know why everybody uses the laser at 100% while making a video people should know that you can't run it at a hundred or it will weaken the laser very fast so why film it at 100% when like you they should stop at eighty-five 90% so thank you for telling everybody about it becoming weak you're one of the very few that do.
For 10W module real 100% is in fact 11W and 20W is 22W. Longer made it this way exactly for the reasons you mentioned.

As a laser welder salesman I have to comment. Put on laser safety glasses which are rate for the wave length of you laser. Putting on a normal welding helmet does absolutely nothing to protect your eyes! To end on a positive note: love that you are helping with the giveaway. I would like to join but do ship to Belgium? Definitely getting involved on the donations, more than got my money's worth from the information you've provided on various bits of kit, as a fabrication hobbyist with limited space, making the choice to try the cheap Chinese tools comes easier watching your results. I've considered making my own laser engaver some years ago, then after I've read through a course on laser safety, I've found that even what you might consider low power lasers for your particular application, the reflection itself can burn your eyes out within a split second if you are unlucky. Afterwards I've put that on hold, until I've had enough time to really do everything safely, considering myself and my environment, reflection, laser traps, power ratings for glasses and wavelengths etc. Nice review btw!

good to know on the spacing being needed to cut through better. I've just started doing some cutting and hadn't spaced it at the time, but will plan on that in all future ones!
Thank you. The honey combs are great as they reduce smoking and vapour stains a lot. But just a few washers makes a big difference. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle In this case the client wanted the smoke/burn stains on the back actually, but yeah the washers were a good quick fix and the honeycomb is on my future purchase list potentially.
I think they should move the usb and micro SD card slot from the top to the side, I can see them getting clogged up with dust etc.
I just got my 20w laser the other day and Longer must be watching your videos. My laser only has only one thumb screw on the side to lock in the height of the laser and there is a metal piece on the bottom you swing down to adjust the proper height. There is no longer a separate piece you can lose to set it up. Also I got the same air assist that you showed and like you the thread insert was too loose and did not tighten. I used loctite also and fixed it. It must be a manufacturing defect and not a fluke.

Has anyone tried building airtight boxes for these things? The air cooling might make it difficult, depending on where it goes once it's passed over the hot bits, but it seems like it'd be a good way to ensure that you don't end up with anything catching fire, & you could also contain the fumes by adding a fan & filter (passing the trapped CO2 around the space & through the filter, not venting to the exterior until it's finished the job).
I definitely recommend an enclosure with a form of extraction for sure. Comgrow do fire retardant covers but I'm not sure if they do ones big enough for this. Cheers J
@@joshuadelisle I was thinking more a box you could fill with carbon dioxide by lighting a candle, which could then be extracted later on. I'm wondering whether removal of oxygen could also lessen scorching, though it wouldn't prevent the blackening of the cut edges themselves.

Have you seen the xTool 40w laser diode? Looks like an affordable laser cutter that can do 8x4 18mm ply isn't too far away!
They look great. I'm reviewing a 50w Co2 laser soon. I think those are the best but a little costly. Cheers J

What software do you run on these machines? Is there a limitation (except for steel) on materials? Is the "test print" available for us "normals" ?
You can use Laser GRBL which is free or paid versions like lightburn which is what I now use for the extra features. The only plastic you should cut is acrylic as other plastics give off harmful gases, there are ply woods that are laser specific but any ply wood is ok as long as adequate extraction is in place as some glues and resin's are not good to breath. It works well on stainless steel specifically and it will mark normal steel but only lightly. Other metals require a coating, oxide or anodised surface that is then removed by the laser to reveal the picture. All the very best. Cheers J
The test print was generated on lightburn but you can do it on the free version with some G-code knowledge which is worth learning anyway. I may do a coding basics video on this subject in the future. Cheers J

Have had my share of headache when forgetting the fume extract motor... Just found the feature in Lightburn and feels like a good value as a software. Keep up the great work with this channel. Perforated sheet-metal(the kind that comes with lot's of evenly spaced holes) or a tool-wall hole-plate glued to a board(mdf/ply(particle-board flooring etc) use the holes as drilling-guide to drill through the wood(you could even use the laser for this as the holes only need to be deep enough to clear the bearing-ball), then lots and lots of cheap bearing-balls resting in the holes(+some superglue if you feel a need for it). More durable than honeycomb, cheaper and easily repairable(and you don't have to fill every hole with a bearing-ball), and better airflow as there are no sidewalls restricting it... Also allows you to use printed guides with cheap magnets for repeatable support and positioning...
Always wanted one, just can't afford it.

Same here - I have paypal so I don't have to spread my credit card details around the internet. If vendors won't accept paypal then they do without my business. Shame as I'd like a pop at winning this too.
I got in touch with them. They said PayPal doesn't offer payment protection on instant purchase transactions as there is no physical product just the ticket. They said it's best to use apple or Google pay otherwise. I'm guessing having PayPal is a costly option with no benefits. I did argue the case for the universal aspect of using PayPal though.
