“Buddy, I’d hate to break it to you but that ain’t no f****n torque wrench; it’s a piece of pipe. Must be a Diesel engine builders most famous quote. Nice work dude
That's why I wish these armchair mechanics would abstain from posting their little nitpicks and comments and just enjoy the video. Dude knows what he's doing - he doesn't need some neckbeard in mommy's basement telling him how to do his job.
ROFLMAO 🤣
Got of love keyboard mechanics lol
That's funny
Hey, your torque pipe is bending!
I really like the cleanliness and the attention to detail. Giving a shit is a dying art.
He loves his trade obviously you would want him.to make your engine ...!
I drive for a local fuel distributor, I currently drive a 2017 International LT DayCab. My last truck was a 2010 Maxxturd with the 12.4 Liter Maxxturd Diesel Engine. The 2017 that I drive now has a Cummins 15 liter, it is a great truck, this engine is pretty loud, but overall it very nice, then low end torque is especially impressive. I have begged, threatened to quit, threatened to quit and take half there driver with me, cussed until I ran out of cuss words..............all to try to get them to buy me a Kenworth, a Freightliner, a Western Star.....anything but a damn Navistar, they refuse. I hate them for this, I am the senior driver, been there for 14 years, I make exceptional money, but I still might quit if someone would buy me anything other than a damn International. I once owned my own truck, and I would not hesitate to have KT rebuild my engine. Half of the problem that I have with my shit spreader is the fact that the International shop is over worked and poorly motivated. The other half of my problem is the tire shop that this dealership uses is COMPLETELY incompetent. I have taken my truck to the shop on two thursdays in a row, just trying to get them to balance my steer tires, my steer tires still have 0 weights on them.
I agree, some of the characters on KZhead operate in a very messy/dirty environment for their rebuilds. I don't watch them more than twice, or so. I will keep watching here until I can't see anymore, or he decides he is not putting up with the idiots. Best wishes
@@kevinkelley3657 Fight the good fight but sometimes you have to concede. I'm down to "my new truck needs to be a manual", went home for three weeks on the last truck "call me when you get a manual in, you have the number". They called.
Absolutely agree 100%, he does this for our enjoyment and education, He does not need a bunch of arm chair quarterbacks telling him what hes doing wrong, its clear he has an interesting channel or would not have 83,000+ VIEWS in less than 72 HOURS, now that is interesting in itself, This guy has a good sense of humor in his own way, hes not afraid to say that was wrong or it was wrong, The guy is doing this to help us out and we enjoy it and learn from his work and taking the time to video and share, I personally appreciate each one of his videos and this is why I am a subscriber.
Love the videos, no bullshit, no music, no crazy intro, no petty explanations, I appreciate em 👌👌🇺🇸
Exactly what I was thinking 👍🏽
Yup!
You will NEVER get this quality of work at any dealership period
I'm no diesel mechanic, but my guess is he puts in a couple additional hours on one of these builds with all the extra "attention to details " steps. Perhaps money out of his pocket initially, but in the end, he's built a better product, feels better about it and no doubt has gained some additional jobs because of it.
Yes you will come to Bakersfield
@@jesusperez665 Not at a dealership level. you wont. I have done enough in frames and out of chassis jobs. Time is Money
scott Baker yes you will. But it would be better just need to find one of the many good ones.
Dealer techs are no different than Indies Humans. If they are paid by job, they skip as much as possible to meet an acceptable return rate. Read:not too high to get fired. If they are flat rate, they get enough done not to get fired. People who are exceptional at this stuff are too busy working projects like this to take call in business. Have fun waiting 18 months for amazing work at any price.
You sir are a Master Craftsman. Paying attention to the detail of rod/pin/piston weights are the little things that probably make your engine builds far outlast anyone else's builds. And your non-chalant commentary is priceless.
the commentary is the very reason I subed this channel.
Piece of shit Go Pro lol😂
Nothing like watching KT3406e with a few beers on a Saturday afternoon 😎
Walking that dog and kicking that cat, thats where its at,left lane bandit, get out of the left lane me and my cat got to getter done, ten dash four.
Living large I see
Thank you for allowing us to watch you work!
bmcc12 let’s see a JD build
Amen.. been waiting a long time. I own 4 trucks all with c15 and I been waiting for another video on how to do my own work
elijah willis not sure if u know this is where us South Country boys play??
Here is an example of a man who will never be without a job.
"You can never have too much lube down there." Ain't that the truth.
That's what the old lady says
Been watching your videos for awhile, and wish I had one for you to build for me. Retired pilot now, but drove back in early 70’s after 80’s getting out of the Military. Your builds are the best I’ve seen. Hang in there! You will never go hungry as long as you want to build the cats. Dealing with cancer now, but love your videos.
Heh, just saw you comment and it's a couple of years old. Hope you are well, did you beat that sonofabitch or what?
The driver that gets to sit behind that engine every day will be grinning ear to ear.
😎
lol the bent torque wrench comment had me rolling 🤣 nice work sir.
I'm blown away by your high level of detail you put into rebuilding these engines. Thank you.
I've been watching your videos for awhile now, and there is definitely an addictive component to your posts. The precision with which you approach and do your work is outstanding. I like your seemingly nonchalant nature and the way your north Texas/Oklahoma twang brings a validation to your cynical and sarcastic, and funny, comments that are sprinkled throughout your detailed narrative. Keep doing what you're doing. It's great entertainment and uniquely informative. I appreciate people who know what they are talking about. Thanks for that.
I grow up with heavy equipment, but broke my neck in '87. Now I enjoy these kind of stuff!
You are holding your mouth wrong when you put that crank in. Lol. Good video 👍
Get in there like i said
I went to a Caterpillar specific college called ThinkBig. Nothing but Cat products. The engine rebuild class I took, I feel you are doing a quicker version of EXACTLY what the instructors taught us. You are doing it as good as anyone can. Keep it up man.
Love these videos. I work in a prototype fabrication shop mostly by myself. Whenever things get to big for me to move around or lift I ask myself what KT3406E would do then figure it out! I doubt anyone who leaves a negative comments has ever built an engine. How does someone mistake a cheater bar for a torque wrench anyway?
Isaac's Garage I don’t even like to call it a cheater bar. My dad who was a mechanic who was retired and a USN vet called it a “force multiplier” which he said was the correct nomenclature.
@@Aegirak That's a better descriptor. I've always known them as cheaters, but the USN knows better!
Meticulous attention to detail. Love watching this fella work.
Welcome back my friend! It’s been too damn long since we’ve seen your brilliant brain building big kitties, blowing shit up, or wrecking late 80s hair bands’ old tour buses. I flipping love this channel!
KT3406E - It is really nice to see a true professional at work. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for us. I really appreciate it, myself. I can see others do as well. The world would do well to see more work like yours. You set a good example. Thank you for that.
Bro, i gotta ask, i watch all your videos and your knowledge is SO vast! You look like a young dude, how the hell do you know so much about all these engines and rebuilds etc. I’d expect someone with your knowledge to have 30+ years experience.. Very impressive! Thank you for the awesome videos and content!!
No kidding, I’d like to hear his story.
I'm sure you know about something that he doesnt... come on ppl. Sheesh
bucksnort bumblefuk I know you’re a dick. 👍🏿
The same reason you have 18-25 year olds bolting together airplanes. I train them for two years, then the ones that give a shit get to go work on their own.
@@Everythingisgoingtobealright sheesh, no need for name calling. Tough guy.
I like your no B.S. approach narrative style. Please dont change that....its refreshing to witness.
I'm a jamaican, I quit driving tours for a living since corona virus and is going into trucks, I have good enough mechanical knowledge and experience of how diesel engine works in coaches but i do notice it a total different story when it comes to trucks so im looking all over for information and I must tell you that i find your videos to be fountains of information, i may never do what you do but bcuz of my understanding of how an engine works i can see how watching your videos would easily make me a better mechanic, if I got the opportunity to name your chanel, I would name it- 'HOW TO REBUILD ENGINES FOR THE DUMMIES' man i love your videos.
Good presentation....l enjoyed every min of it....Thanks from a 77 year old man...!
I'll be honest... I'm not mechanically inclined whatsoever, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the video and am looking forward to watching more. Thank you for taking the time to show us your work.
You might "say" you're not mechanically inclined, but you are fascinated by this man's humble, but OCD approach to his quest for perfection. The more you watch, and the more you listen, the better you understand something that you thought was beyond your own percieved abilities. I'd bet that once you took on a project (not a 700hp engine rebuild, lol) you would figure it out and finish it perfectly. I'm a 73 year old retired industrial electrician (marine & oilfield) , and have had the pleasure of servicing enormous types of rotating equipment. But I've never worked a day in my life, because I'm at my best & happiest when I have tools in my hands. Now think of something that you'd like to fix, and go fix it. Well done in advance. Cheers.
There was a mechanic who welded a pipe wrench on his bumper of his service truck because he was sick of people tailgating him. They would see the wrench and back off scared it would fall off and hit their vehicle..I love watching your videos you really know your stuff..Thanks for sharing..
Hahahaha now that's using the ole noggin!
Dude definitely knows his shit! Pretty damn awesome to watch him rebuild these big engines. Very smart guy, someone can gain alot of knowledge from a guy like this...
When I hit the lottery I’ll have you build me a reliable 900 to a 1,000 hp cat motor ❤️😎
Same 🙏 Even a c-13 with an 18 speed
Good watching an ( engineer) build cat properly. The way it should be .
I recently read an article on FB regarding why most semi's have a six cylinder engine. I was stunned. I figured they were at least V-8 or more. It turns out the narrow block makes for easier maintenance and a sharper turning radius. They just build them with GENEROUS sized cylinders. And also, they can add a turbo if they need more grunt. My first full time job was working at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, WI. They were building diesels for the navy that made 1,000 hp per cylinder. I was told it had two crankshafts, one on the bottom and one on the top. The pistons came together in the center and that was where the injectors were situated. I think there were four of them. Two on each side. I grew up two blocks away from where they tested engines. When us kids weren't making too much noise, we could here those big diesel engines chuffing away. The pistons in the one you were rebuilding have to be huge for it to be a 15 liter. Had to chuckle as you turned the crank you said, "I've got spinnage". Right away I had visions of Popeye helping you finish the assembly. Sorry, couldn't help it. I was born in 1946 so I grew up with Popeye. This was a great video, clear and educational. You do great work. Its a shame auto makers don't build their engines to accept liners. That would greatly extend the usable life of the engine but then they wouldn't sell as many cars. And too, the engines of today really do last a long time. Most of my friends have cars with 160,000 miles or more. They take them thousands of miles on vacation with no worries. The joke about the breaker bar, vs torque wrench was a good one. Let me see, a six foot bar times my 180 pounds should come to about 410 foot pounds. With a lot of practice a man can get really good at feeling torque. I worked at an auto assembly plant as a trouble shooter when something went wrong. If an inspector found a problem I had to buzz over there with a crash cart and fix whatever. Bolt didn't go flush in the trans? I would back it out and run a tap in then blow out debris, install new bolt and save it. Wrong transmission? I had to remove the trans when engine got to a middle area and put the correct one on. The engine and trans were on a pedestal before stuffing into car so I could do that before insertion. I got a feel for the tension such that I challenged a coworker to come behind and check the torque I applied with my 32 inch ratchet. On twelve bolts I was within specs, plus or minus five pounds. Some were 15mm some were 18mm. So I had be accurate with the two different torques. That was 22 years ago before I retired, I doubt I'm still that accurate. I'm out of practice, now use a clicker wrench on everything just to be safe. I have a nifty diesel in my 2005 Jeep Liberty. Four cylinders, 16 valves, a turbo, intercooler, and it uses a really powerful lift pump to create 20,000 psi on the fuel. That is fed through a common rail to each cylinder, the injectors are operated electronically by a minicomputer. The intent is for the fuel to enter the cylinder as a very fine spray, almost a fog. The computer can adjust the instant the injector opens to get maximum power or minimum fuel usage. Supposedly, it only has 162 HP but can create 300 lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm. Not bad for a 2.8 liter four cylinder. It now has 262,000 trouble free miles. If I'm easy on the go pedal it can get 30 mpg on a calm day. if it's windy from ANY direction other than behind, it takes a hit down to 25 I suppose due to turbulance. One time pushing through deep snow in all wheel drive for about 200 miles it only got 15 mpg. I noticed that fuel gauge dropping at about twice the normal rate. I pulled a bottle gas truck out of a snow bank one time. He could not believe it. But there was a bare spot on the blacktop, with all of my tow straps hooked together, I was able to get one tire on the bare blacktop. I was told the transfer case creates a three times reduction so I'm guessing it was putting about 800-850 lbs of torque to the wheels. Diesel power has such great promise, lots of torque, long life and it can be operated on numerous types of fuel. There is a video on YT of a guy who makes diesel fuel from alga in a big greenhouse. It burns clean, NO POLLUTION because it's vegetable oil. He is the CEO of Valcent industries. I haven't been able to get any of his alga fuel but my little diesel sure likes the biodiesel I get in Monroe, WI. It varies from 5% all the way up to 20% depending on their production. The biodiesel does a good job of lubricating the pump and other parts. It feels slippery if I get some on my hands. It runs quieter on the biodiesel as well. That is a real issue since they removed the sulfur. Not sure how sulfur lubricated the parts but at least the biodiesel can take up the slack. Thanks for showing us what a REAL workhorse diesel looks like. That was an awesome video.
So during this furlough, it's been cow hoof trimming vids, Aussie guy that unblocks sewer lines vids, commercial farming vids, pipeline welding vids, and diesel engine rebuild vids, this is a great country man!
Aussie sewer guy 👍🤣
I'm just watching this for entertainment but if I did need a diesel engine I wouldn't hesitate to hire this guy.
I will never re build or service an engine this deep. I still watched the whole video, very educational. Thank you.
You should just make a series of engine build videos in detail like that... super easy to follow and understand. 👌🏼 10/10
Thank you for being blunt on what you say. Its actually refreshing to hear some of the wordings you put together.
Dude is amazing his knowledge is on another level love watching him rebuild these engines 💯
This is a guy I could spend an afternoon talking engines with! Awesome video KT3406e!
I can listen to you talk about something all day!
There's something very satisfying about watching somebody who's obviously very knowledgeable doing a proper job with no BS. Even if I never rebuild a big diesel, there's still something I walk away with that makes me think how to do a better job on other projects. Thanks for the effort in putting these videos up!
Just wanted to say thanks for the good build videos, I really enjoy watching them! It’s great seeing how you go the extra mile with each motor you build 👍
I do like how you are just honest with the comments thats what makes me smile
That was some awesome power slide. Where's toque!!🤣😎
I don't understand why people think they know how to build a engine you do it right I've built diesel for over 20 years Cat Cummins Detroit Mack you know what your doing
Thanks for making these videos ! We used to farm in the 70’s and had Caterpillar tractors. The biggest 2 were a D8 model 2U and a D9, which I have no idea what engines they used. I always enjoyed hearing them run and starting them up ! I don’t think we ever did a major overhaul on any of the engines but, I enjoy your videos and getting to see what a heavy duty Caterpillar engine looks like on the inside !
Would love to see a video of a C13 build from start to finish in as much detail as possible. I don't mind if it has to be several hours long. I'll watch it all.
Nothin like a guy that knows his shit. You can tell he isn’t simply a “mechanic”. He’s a engine builder. HUGE difference.
I wouldn't call your videos garbage at all. My dad had his own shop and I started working on trucks at 12 years old. Because of him I learned what I needed to know to be a successful diesel mechanic. Your videos remind me of when I was a kid watching him put engines together. Keep up the good work. The ones that are commenting the ignorant stuff about torque wrenches and other things have obviously never worked on much of anything. Jackasses will be jackasses. Like my old man used to say, IF IT AIN'T A CAT, IT MUST BE A DOG
I don't care if he tightened up those main caps with a pipe wrench. If the dude wasn't any good he wouldn't have any customers.
Craft as ART. Just the best. This fella is true American genius.
2.6K+👍's up thanks again for taking us all along with you for the great show 😊
One thing for certain, you will be sought out and pursued your entire life. Hell of a mechanic
Awesome job. Your very professional with a side of humor. Retired CSX RCO Conductor with a 3406B in a ‘91 KW

I may have you build an engine for me in the future. You seem to do a great honest job on your engines and you seem to really care. Thank you 👍
When you plastiguage something like the mains, if the clearance is out of spec how do you fix it?
depends on whitch way its outta spec, if the clearance is too small, bore the bearings, with em installed, until their to size. if too large, bore gauge and figure out if you have a out of round, order oversize bearings and bore to size.
pretty sure u can get it in spec with different bearing thickness
@@weedies7577 depends on what they offer in bearing sizes, some engines like the cats/cummins/detroit stuff you can, but for the more odball stuff, jeere, old mack e7's, kubota, mitsubishi, ect, they might not offer the inbetween sizes, just std/ .10 over ect.
